One of my ancestors is Jane mcGaffin [b 1832?] who migrated to Australia in 1858. Here she married, aged 26, James Sykes in 1859. On her marriage certificate she indicated that her father was James McGaffin [Farmer] and her mother Elizabeth Thomson, both from County Down. There is a family story that her Jane's grandsons went to Ireland while serving in WW1 and visited the family linen mills.[??] I would suggest that perhaps they had a flax scutching mill. There is a James McGaffin listed in Griffiths in Sheeptown, Newry with land and a farm, but other than that I cannot pin anything down, can anyone help?
