I am looking for information on my paternal grandmother, Mary Agnes McGeehan. She immigrated in 1890, settled in Philly and married my grandfather, Thomas Patrick McGough in 1908. I know she was born in Ireland in 1877 on Dec. 23. I believe in Donegal somewhere in the vicinity of Newton Cunningham. She died in Philly in 1953. At the wake there were many relatives from the area with McGeehan and I believe Cunningham last names. I have not been able to find information on her parentage due to loss of records in Ireland. Is this Mary related to your McGeehan family? If you have any information please let me know.
It is very possible that your great grandmother's attendant Mary McGeehan may have been my great grandfather's FIRST wife Mary McGrady (McCraedy) who died just after childbirth (around 1895) of their son Hugh. Freeland PA is very close to Hazleton PA, where they lived.

Patrick certainly knew the McMonigles from Derrylaconnell, Donegal. His sister Mary McGeehan married Andrew McMonigle and they emigrated to Hailey Idaho. I don't think she (his sister) ever made it to PA. So I'm thinking it might have been Patrick's first WIFE Mary McGrady (McCraedy).

Do you have any more info? Where did your McMonigles come from?

selphie06@yahoo.com
Hi Mary. I found an old article recently about a Patrick McGeehan who had a sawmill accident in that area around 1895. My great grandfather was also Patrick McGeehan, orig from Lettermacaward (Derrylaconnell). Do you know if the sawmill accident was YOUR Patrick or mine? My Patrick McGeehan was married to Mary McGrady (McCraedy?) around that time. I think he lived in Hazleton. Not sure where he worked exactly but I believe he did a year in the mines before moving to Philadelphia around 1896.

Drop me a line: selphie06@yahoo.com

She married an Andrew McMonigle and they emigrated to Hailey Idaho where they settled and had a number of children and grandchildren. Later to Boise Idaho.

Is it possible you meant Idaho rather than Montana? Married around 1926, although no children resulted. Is this the Frank Boyle you're asking about?
You might want to search on Cornelius McHugh (not McCue). My Charles McHugh was often mispelled Charles McCue, including in his Phila obituary!

I know I've seen "Cornelius McHugh" mentioned on various boards.

I think we are researching the same family. I don’t have much but I think we meet at Hannah’s father’s generation. Hugh had twins Anna and Michael born in Newark, New Jersey on May 19, 1867. I think Hugh was brother/cousin of my Catherine McGeehan. Also, my mother-in-law remembers her father’s cousin, John McGeehan, saying that Irene Ryan was a relative. I don’t have a lot more, going backward. Maybe we can add to each other’s information.

McGeehan Family from Doochary, Lettermacaward Parish, Derrylaconnell Near, Donegal

My McGeehan line comes from Connell McGeehan (b around 1825) who married a Mary Bonar around 1855.
Their families were both well-known in the farm area of Doochary (Derrylaconnell Near), Lettermacaward Parish, Donegal.

Connell (Condy) and Mary had 5 children: Nancy who never married and lived in the family cottage until old age; Owen who married and resettled in Scotland; Mary who emigrated to "pioneer country" Hailey Idaho (Deer Creek) with husband Andrew McMonigle, and who had many children there; Patrick who emigrated to Pennsylvania and settled in Philadelphia with his second wife Mary Moy (McHugh); and Sarah (Sally) who married a Condy Boyle from Fintown. Sarah and Condy settled in Londonderry and had many children, last name of Boyle today.

My line comes from Patrick McGeehan and (second wife) Mary Moy McHugh, m around 1896 in Philadelphia. Descendants of theirs still live in the Philadelphia area, all through Alice McGeehan Flanagan (b 1900) and/or Ann (Babe) McGeehan Frederick (b 1898).

Patrick McGeehan's first wife (m 1893) was a Mary McGrady (also from Doochary area) who died from complications of childbirth to their son Hugh. Their son Hugh McGeehan lived to adulthood but died in a steel mill accident in 1928. Hugh had 2 sons, Joseph McGeehan and Hugh McGeehan, who may have descendants today in the Philadelphia area or in the mines area of PA, where Patrick and Mary McGrady settled before she died. (I would be interested in corresponding with any descendants of Joseph McGeehan or Hugh McGeehan. We have lost touch with this side of his first family).

Feel free to contact me at mlavins@optonline.net if any of this sounds connected to your family history.

Posted January 5, 2007
Patrick McGeehan in PA

I have information from the 1870 census from the area of Hazleton (Luzerne County) PA showing a McGeehan family with a son named Patrick. This family is almost certainly the family of my great-grandmother, Bridget McGeehan who married Patrick HIGGINS in (Dec.?) 1870.
The census shows the following individuals:
Head of house: Catherine, born abt. 1828 in Ireland.
Bridget, born abt. 1853
Daniel, born abt. 1854
Anthony, born abt. 1856
Patrick, born abt. 1858
Grace, born abt. 1860
Ellen, born abt. 1862
Edward, born abt. 1864
All of the children are shown as being born in PA.
There is a good possiblity that this McGeehan family has connections to a Boyle family, but I have no specific proof of that as yet.

If you think you may have connections to this family, or to any Higgins family in the area of Drifton, Freeland, or Hazleton, PA I would love to hear from you.

Patrick McGeehan in PA

Mary,
My apologies for taking so long to respond to your last post.
You asked if I knew of any westward migration in my family. Actually, I know very little about the McGeehan line, other than what I mentioned in my first post. The only westward migration I have certain knowledge of is this: my grandfather Daniel Patrick Higgins (son of Patrick Higgins and Bridget McGeehan Higgins) left PA sometime after 1900, and after a stay in Washington D C, went to Chicago, Illinois, and then to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he lived the remainder of his life.
There is one other item that I haven't been able to prove, as yet. My grandfather had a cousin (I haven't even been able to prove the relationship yet) named Frank Boyle, who became a judge in Juneau, Alaska. I have found that there was a man of that name in Juneau in 1917, as an on-line database shows a WWI draft registration for a Francis Aloysius Boyle (born June 1, 1877)in Juneau. Furthermore, a 1930 Hazleton newspaper gives a brief mention of "Judge Frank Boyle of Juneau, Alaska" as visiting his sister (a Mrs. O'Donnell) in Hazleton. The only other information I have so far comes from my Aunt Peggy, who remembers receiving a letter from Judge Boyle when her father (my grandfather) died in 1947.
Hope I haven't gotten too far off track here, but perhaps the information might be helpful in determining if we have a connection.
I am a descendant of Andrew Lewis and Maria Bruce Lewis. I am interested also in establishing the link between Catherine McGeehan Short and Francis Scott Key. I have found a Charles Bruce on the Key family tree that may be the father to Maria and William, but the Key family tree did not have any information on spouses and descendants of Charles Bruce and we don't have any parentage information on Charles Bruce on our family tree. If Charles Bruce was nephew of Catherine McGeehan Short's, it would not be inconcievable that he would have married her daughter. And I bet you are my cousin, Carole Moyer Rivenbarck.

So glad you responded. I feel there is a definite connection here because of names and location in Ireland. My Cleary's are from Londonderry area, (Culmore Point -- where lighthouse is).

Actually have little on the McGeehan's other than that Elizabeth Cleary married James McGeehan. There is a website in Ireland that I can send you that has the baptisms from 1858-1901 for the Diocese of Derry of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, parish of Iskaheen and it does show a Daniel McGeehan who was married to a Ann McLaughlin and they had a child named Eliza Jane on March 17, 1867. The two McGeehan's mentioned are several named James and one Daniel. Gives births of their children and the sponsers. One sponsor is a George McGeehan.

Appreciate hearing what you have on your John McGeehan and Elsie Jewell, as it does appear that is our Elizabeth.

You can reach me at Stars4aud@aol.com.

Audrey

I don't know your Anna and Charles. I have asked another person who may know more about them. In that part of Donegal there are many Boyles and McGeehans! FIntown has a McGeehan Coach Co. (bus) and there may be a high likelyhood that he may know may. Also, my friend knows Boyles in the Fintown area, so he may them.

Anna McGeehan, my grandmother, emigrated from the Fintown area of Donegal to Phila. where she married Charles Boyle from Doochary, Co. Donegal in Jan., 1901.
Do these people appear anywhere in your family records? I have not been able to find Anna's parents or siblings.
