Not in MS-- the line I'm seeking has a TN/KY background, to Alabama, to Missouri.... likely spelled McGee for two generations--one part likely connected with the Kelly families in Wright and Mairies Counties in Missouri. There could be another branch likely connected with a Turner line that was in MS before moving to Arkansas and Oklahoma--this one was in present day Pontotoc Co., OK area, besides a branch in Carter Co., OK. There is that Elihu McGee line from Lincoln Co., TN that is supposed to be McGehee--one of this line married into the Turner line.

For added interest, these Brown families keep popping up in similar places--two claiming different tribal in-laws--Wyandotte near Lawrence Co., MO and one moving from Texas to Texas Co., MO, possibly Comanche, more likely Tonkawa or Kickapoo or even one of wandering Shawnees or Delawares that kept moving around Texas for a time, being 'urged' to leave one area and going to another area--some members of these tribes would be entertained by the preaching revivals on the frontier (this was recorded by some mid 1800's Texas preachers that listed the tribal visitors who attended the revivals).

Houston Telegraph
Houston, Texas
August 14, 1863
Obituaries
Died, at Mrs. MALLORY’S, near Madison, Arkansas, in his 41st year, May 15th, 1863, Lieut. WILLIAM B. MCGEHEE of Company B, 21st Texas Cavalry, from a gunshot wound through the hips, received while leading a charge, three days before, on an ambuscade of Federals on Crawley’s Ridge, in St. Francis County, Arkansas. Thus fell, in the prime of manhood and in the active discharge of his duties as a patriot and soldier, the subject of this obituary. Known at home as a loving husband and fond parent, respected by all who knew him as a good citizen of high and honorable bearing… born in Madison(?) county, Ala. And coming to Texas in 1840(?), he became a citizen of …Travis County, where he leaves many relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
May 28, 1888
Cyclone’s Fearful Wrath
Hillsboro, Texas, May 27: A cyclone swept over this place about 7 a m. today with disastrous results. The terrible blow lasted 15 minutes… demolishing the residence of J. A. MCGEHEE one mile northwest of this place. The cyclone then proceeded toward town, devastating everything in its path…. W. S. MCFADDEN’S residence was blown from the foundation and his little girl had a broken arm… Upon hearing a rumor that a whole family named MCGEHEE had been killed about one mile west of town, a News reporter repaired at once to the scene and upon investigation… Mr. McGehee and family were found at the residence of Mr. ROLLINS, a short distance off, all suffering from injuries sustained.

From Mr. McGehee: My wife and I had just arisen and were in the room when the cyclone struck the house. The next I remember is being hurled through the air in the midst of flying timbers. I landed some distance from the house in the mud. On getting up, I discovered that I was hurt. However, I managed to get to my wife, who was lying near me, and bring her here. Mr. Rollins and myself then looked around for the children and found five without much trouble, but my little five year old boy GEORGE could not be found. After looking for him some time, I called him and was surprised to see him get up from under a remnant of my fodder stack and start towards me with his little face clotted with blood… Doctors state the condition of Mrs. McGehee and little George to be critical…

Miami Daily News-Record
Miami, Oklahoma
May 30, 1940
Death of A.
1888 death of Stephen McGehee
Logansport Pharos
Logansport, Indiana
April 21, 1888
Guards and Their Guns Desirable
Canton, Illinois, April 21: The crime perpetrated near this city on Wednesday afternoon by JOHN J. HARRIS / FARRIS was a fiendish one. Thirteen years ago, Farris married Miss DIBBIE BAUMAN. Two children, boys ages 12 and 5 years were born to them. Four years ago, Mrs. Farris procured a divorce from her husband, who had squandered her fortune in dissolute living, the court awarding to her the custody of the children. Two months ago Mrs. Farris was married to STEPHEN MCGEHEE, a farmer. Mr. and Mrs. McGehee took up their residence on the WILCOXEN farm, about three miles south of Canton.

On Saturday, April 14, EDDIE, the eldest boy, wrote Farris, his father, that his mother had married again. Farris was engaged at the time with a party of railroad surveyors in Henderson County west of here. News of his former wife’s marriage seems to have turned him into a human devil, for immediately after receiving his son’s letter, he came to Canton, arriving here on Monday. His whereabouts on Tuesday was unaccounted for, but it is known that he was the influence of liquor and threatened to kill McGehee and his wife. On Wednesday morning he was seen going south toward the residence of McGehee. It is probable he went direct to the premises and remained in hiding, awaiting the appearance of McGehee, who was hauling logs some distance from home.

About 1 o’clock, McGehee came home. While he and his little family were at dinner table, Farris opened the door and walked in with a revolver in his hand. Approaching the table, he fired at McGehee, exclaiming, “I have come to kill you and her, and I’ll do it.” The first shot McGehee received in his right arm. He begged Farris not to kill him, but Farris fired again, the second bullet to the brain. Farris then turned to Mrs. McGehee, telling her that she had to die, too. Mrs. McGehee caught his arm and pulled the pistol aside, and Eddie also caught hold of him, begging piteously for his mother’s life. In the struggle that ensued, Farris tripped and fell, and was held down for a time, being allowed to arise upon his promise to spare her life. For an hour he kept the woman terrorized, refusing her to enter the house. Finally he gave his revolver to Eddie and told him to get his brother and go to the barn and play. The little fellow, thinking he was saving his mother’s life by getting away with the revolver, promptly took it and went as requested.

As soon as he had gone, Farris seized his former wife and outraged her. This accomplished, he called the children to him, compelled and their mother to shake hands with him, and promise to attend his funeral. He then informed them that he intended hanging himself, first ordering them to go to Canton and not to say a word about what he had done until they arrived there, under pain of instant death. With her children, Mrs. McGehee started for this city, not knowing whether her husband was dead or not. It was after 9 o’clock when she arrived at the residence of her parents, and it was then the alarm was given.

A physician was dispatched to scene of the tragedy. Word was also sent to the city and search for the murderer began. About 5 o’clock, he was in the vicinity of a beer garden near the city, drinking beer. Officer WILSON arrested him and brought him to the city. His examination was set for Saturday, and he was taken to Lewistown and placed in jail. Friday afternoon at the coroner’s inquest in addition to the above facts coming out, certain unmentionable testimony was given in relation to the fiend’s outrage on his former wife. As soon as this became known, threats were made of lynching the devil in human form, and the excitement became intense. At the adjournment of the inquest, the sheriff at Lewistown was notified to look out for a lynching party and a guard was placed at the county jail.

During the night about 75 masked men from south of the city marched to Lewistown for the purpose of executing summery justice. Arrived at the outskirts of town, a runner to sent to reconnoiter the jail. He came back and reported the heavy guard armed with Winchester rifles. For some reason… the mob ..went away.

During the night, Sheriff SMITH slipped away with Farris and drove across country to Cuba where he boarded a train for Peoria, lodging his prisoner in jail there. Farris will be lynched if he is again brought to this county. Mrs. McGehee is with her parents in this city, completely prostrated.
