family can be found in strange places!

My sister walked into a store the other day and saw a man she thought she knew from our grandmother's funeral Years ago. She went to talk to him ( VERY out of character for her) and sure enough he is family. My great grandmother Mc Gehee was married 2x. We are from the first husband and he is from the second. He has all our great grandmother's pictures and some of the family information. One of the things he shared is that he has a picture of an Indian woman we have always known as Indian Princess. She was married to either my great great grandfather or his father. He also said that back when Grandma's house burned the family Bible was only singed and it was in a room totally consumed! I am waiting to see that and the many pictures..
If I learn anything I will pass it on.
McGehee Photos circa 1880-1894

I am in possession of photographs of McGehees dating from circa 1880- circa 1894. The first is of Frances Beatrice McGehee born 1859 Perry, Georgia, died 1896 in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas while visiting her in laws with her husband, John Patterson "Pat" Howard. Presumably she and Pat lived in Alabama, as her son Benjamin was born in Birmingham. She appears to be 20-30 years old in the photo, beautiful and poised.
The second photo is of 6 children, likely cousins all. This photo of the 6 children is from circa 1893-95.The children in the photo are:
Benjamin Patterson Howard
Evie Buff
Beatrice Howard (Benjamin’s Sister)
Ethel McGehee
Thomas McGehee Singletary
Mamie Howard Diggs (Benjamin’s sister - her married name was Diggs and it is inscribed with her married name included)
The children appear to range in age from 4-9 or 10.
I am not certain where it was taken.
I also have a photo of the three Howard children and it is inscribed “from cousin Irene Blanke”.
My grandfather, Benjamin Patterson Howard, and his sisters were orphaned in 1896, and they went, either alone or in company of one or the other, to live with cousins. Which cousins I do not know.
Frances Beatrice McGehee's father was J. Everett (or Fabin) McGehee, born Dallas 1838, died Opalika Ala 1887 (where he lived after the war with his wife). Frances Beatrice McGehee’s mother was Sarah Frances Cofield, born 1840 in Perry, Georgia and who outlived her husband and died in Hawkinsville, Georgia in 1914.
Please let me know if any of the names listed mean anything to you. Any of them.
And thanks.

1891 Tragedy in Henry Co., TN

Carroll County Democrat
Huntingdon, Tennessee

February 27, 1891

A Henry County Killing
There was a serious killing in Henry County Wednesday of last week. THOMAS MCGEHEE and his brother-in-law JACK ALEXANDER became enemies over the condition of a horse which the former brought back to the latter and went to JOHN ARRON, who is the father-in-law of both parties, to settle the matter.

MCGEHEE claimed the horse was unsound, and Mr. ARRON, not agreeing with him, became riled, went home and began to abuse his wife because Mr. Arron, her father, would not agree with him in the matter of the horse. She sent to her father for protection, and when Mr. Arron started to enter McGehee’s house, they got into a personal combat, which resulted in MCGEHEE shooting ARRON through the right shoulder causing instant death. MCGEHEE made his escape.

I do not know how these names may tie into my lines of Douthett, Wycoff, or Linhart and was wondering if anyone on the McGehee list may know who these individuals could be. It is my estimate that they existed in the mid to late 1800's.
Bill Linhart

I am in search to verify information on a relative.

My great grandfather Delbert McGehee is said to have served time in Missouri Prison for something. I have been trying to verify this information.

He is said to have been there somewhere between 1937-1952. But I don't have definate dates..

I have a couple of pictures of him that look as if he's standing in the Prison yard.

Any suggestions or recommendations in finding prison inmate records.

Thank you in advance,
Angela Inman

Just thought that the board would be interested that I have been honored by being chosen as the official artist of the lighting of the National Christmas Tree in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. for 2005. A print has been issued of the official painting, "Christmas in Washington", and will be presented to the President and the First Lady at the event. You can read more about it at http://www.paulmcgeheeart.com and http://www.pageantofpeace.org . A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the print will be donated to the Pageant of Peace Organization, a non-profit group that produces the tree-lighting ceremony each year.

Stark Young, how is he related to the McGehee clan?

My grandfather, Edward Lionel McGehee, from Woodville, Mississippi, always said that he was related to Stark Young. Stark Young was a famous writer, his most notable work was " So Red the Rose". That is a story about the Edward McGehee family during the Civil War. They made a Movie about it in the 1940's.

How is Stark Young related to the McGehee Clan?

I am searching for information regarding Pink McGehee and James S. Keiser. They were married on Dec. 27, 1893 in Cayce, KY and lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Pink was the daughter of William Burrus McGehee, Sr. and Lucy Ann Roper. She was the youngest child.

James left Pink with their four children--never heard from again. I know three of the four names: Fred, Eula, and Alice Irene. Eula perhaps had her doctorate; she taught art in college in Tulsa.

We have a picture or two of Pink but no information other than what I've detailed here. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

McGehee/MackGehee Decendants - Books

I have been to the local library today and found the following information:
MCGEHEE Descendants - Vol. 1, Hardbound, 410 pages, illustrated, full name index. Prepared by Mrs. Ethel W. Grider, 714 Third Ave., Winder, Ga. 30680.
This book contains, among others -
THOMAS MACKGEHEE (McGehee) died testate King William County, Va. 1724 Will
Thomas had nine children: Willaim, Diannah (m. Lipscomb), Edward, Samuel, Sarah (m. Lipscomb) Anna, Abraham, Mary, and Jacob.
Possibly Thomas was not the first of his family to come to this country but proof of earlier generation lacking. However the book states that Thomas was the son of James MacGregor, the son of Patrick MacGregor, Chieftan of the ILK, and Marian MacDonald.
The lineage also appears in MAGNA CHARTA BARONS; Burke's EXTINCT PEERAGES; Playfair's BRITISH FAMILY ANTIQUITY, Vol.III, page 744, also Vol. IV, page 740; Wood-Douglas' PEERAGE OF SCOTLAND, Vol. II, page 8; Noble's ROYAL HOUSE OF STUART, page 28; BURKE'S PEERAGE, "Lord MackDonald of Slate County, Antrim, Ireland; and Wootton's BARONETS OF NOVA SCOTIA.
I sincerely hope this helps someone. The library does not loan books from their special collections but there is also a copy of McGEHEE DESCENDANTS Volume II by Ethel C. Woodall Grider, copyright 1989, which has the following info:
Please direct all correspondence and book orders to:
Ethel W. Grider
714 Third Ave.
Winder, Ga. 30680
(Library of Congress Catalog Card # 88-83686)
Published for the Author by
GATEWAY PRESS, INC.
1001 N.
William McGehee

First I want to say Happy Holidays to all my Mc Gehee cousins out there - we wish you health and happiness for the new year!

I wanted to ask if anyone has "my" William Henry Mc Gehee in their line. William Henry is the son of Daniel Martin & Lucy Green and the Grandson on Ransom Mc Gehee & Mary Etheridge. William Henry and his first wife Marie Hughes had two children Bill & Maryann. He was then married twice more with no children.

I just recently saw a "World Tree" entry that Bill was born in 1915 which can not be true since uncle Henry would have only been 10 years old. My father believes that Bill has to be close to his age which would put him being born somewhere in the early-mid 1930's. I have pictures of Bill & Maryann with my father and they do look close in age. I have worked on this line close to 2 years on my Grandfather's family and have run into a brick wall with Uncle Henry!

Any information will be appreciated!

Again,

Merry Christmas to all!

Lori Mc Gehee-Friedl

Col. & Mrs. A. C. McGEHEE of Columbus, Musocgee Co, GA (1899)

“A Very Sad Death: Mrs. O. E. WHITE Passed Away Yesterday Morning

“Yesterday morning, at 2 o’clock, Mrs. O. E. WHITE, nee Miss Katie WATKINS, died at her home in Beallwood, north of the city, after an illness of three weeks, caused by a complication of diseases. The death was a peculiarly sad one, and the many friends of Mrs. WHITE will be grieved and shocked to learn of it. About three years ago Mrs. WHITE, then Miss WATKINS, was married to Mr. WHITE, who is a well known young farmer, living north of the city. Mrs. WHITE had not been in good health for some time, and about here weeks ago she became very ill with typhoid fever. She gradually became weaker and her end occurred yesterday morning at 2 o’clock, as stated above. Mrs. WHITE was the daughter of Mr. Frank WATKINS of Flovilla [Butts County], Ga. She is a niece of Col. and Mrs. A. C. McGEHEE of this city. She is survived by three brothers, Messrs. Oscar, Pearce and Orion WATKINS, and two [sic] sisters, Mrs. A. C. McGEHEE, Jr., and Misses Annie and Eva WATKINS. She was only 21 years of age and this fact made her sad death all the more pathetic. The deceased was a young woman of sweet disposition, and many beautiful and attractive traits of character, and her death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew her. The funeral occurred at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon from Double Churches, north of the city. It was conducted by Dr. B. W. BUSSEY, the same minister who, three years ago, officiated at her marriage.”

[From the "Columbus, Georgia, Enquirer-Sun" newspaper, Saturday, 07 OCT 1899, p. 8. Katy M. WHITE (15 SEP 1879-06 OCT 1899), wife of O. E. WHITE, at Double Churches Cemetery in (now Columbus) Muscogee Co, GA. I came across this death notice while researching an unrelated matter. - jml]
