A daughter (Martha Bates) of Flavilla Bates married a McGeorge. I have no other info on this family, but wanted to include the obit here because of the number of descendants that Flavilla left to mourn her passing. Mrs. Flavilla Louise Bates, who on August 13 (1956) celebrated her 100th birthday passed away early Monday morning, September 3, 1956 at the Gary Rest Home where she had been making her home for several years. "Grandma" Bates was Gary and Deuel county's oldest person.
She was born August 13, 1856 at Warren, Illinois and was united in marriage to Lewellyn Bates on January 1, 1873 at Warren, Illinois. To this union eleven children were born.
In 1882 Mrs. Bates and her husband homesteaded at Niobrara, Nebraska, then to Madison, Minn., and in 1925 they moved to Gary to establish their home.
"Grandma" Bates is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Marie Reed, Clark; Mrs. Hazel Tilbury, Carthage; Mrs. Howard North, Howard; Mrs. Martha McGeorge, Fairfax; Mrs. Desa Bohnsack, Marietta, Minn. and Mrs. Iva Woodbury, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Lewellyn Bates of LaBolt, S.D. and Leon Bates, Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by 71 grandchildren, 226 great grand children, and 164 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1929 and three children.
Funeral services were held today, Sept. 6 at two p.m. in the Gary Methodist Church, preceded by a family prayer service at 11 a.m. at the church, Rev. Ronald Hartung officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Harry R. Olsen, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Lee Hanson. Interment was made at the Grandview cemetery at Gary. The Hanks funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
