Looking for McGhee Family

My grandfather was Hurley McGhee. He was my mom's (Patricia Mcghee) dad. His uncle, I beleive was the cheiftan of the Creeks back in the 50's or 60's. He was an ambassador to the white house during the Kennedy administration. Does anyone know of them or heard of them. Is there any of my family out there? I may have been his first granddaughter. But I can't be sure. He had several children and all by different mothers. Except for my mom and my Uncle Tommy and Uncle James. Thanks for any help.

He was a student at Northwestern University and he had only one year’s study before completing his course.

Logansport Pharos
Logansport, Indiana
August 1, 1898
Jacks to Hang for Murder
Chicago, Aug. 1: GEORGE H. The Howards and Jones were there as witnesses for opposing sides. They entered the same dining room and immediately opened fire. Mr. McGheee had several months ago visited his daughter-in-law.
Bob, I so hope you are still around. It has been years since I started this. My mother is Dale Parks. Her father was Warren Parks who died not long ago. I was in contact with Dave Parks, who is Ray's son, I believe. After my divorce, I lost contact with him. If you get this, please get back to me. Would be interesting to talk to you.

Sorry! I did look at your post but failed to respond. The monument that you described had to have been by Francis' wife as she was Jane Carson before she became a McGhee.

Do you know more on your James's siblings Mary & William? In his "Sketch of the Lemons Family" of 1953 by John H. Lemons he says in pertinent part about his grandfather: "Levi came south to VA and finely to Monroe Co. TN. He located on the TN River near Louden TN where he married Pollie McGea a sister of William McGea who was a noted stock breeder of that day." Only census found for Levi Lemmon b. 1770-80 & female b. 1780-90 is the 1830 Roane Co. census, possibly part that later became Monroe and early Roane marriages don't list them. Thank you, Martha

McGhee's, Cherokee Indian's

I am trying to find info on my great great grandmother, who was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. My family and I have hit a dead end with researching her. Old Census's show her going by Mattie, but her obituary showed her at Martha Jane McGar (her married name, husband J.B. McGar). I know that her Maiden name was McGhee, and that her obituary from 1955 stated that she was survived by 3 sons, James L McGar, Joseph K McGar, Grady F McGar, and 2 daugthers, Mrs. C.A. Graham (Nettie) and Mrs. Leo Hummel (Ihla Maxine)and one sister, Mrs. Addie Turbeville. From earlier Census's she had more children that must have passed before her. I've also read that her Father was born in North Carolina and Her mother was born in Georgia, I believe Martha Jane or Mattie, was born in Tennessee. If anyone has ANY info to share, I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you for this information. It is a huge help as there are so many McGhees in Bedford and Campbell county.

I just started working on the McGhee line last week, so I'm just in the early states. I am able to prove a lot of the relationships through the marriage and cemetery records at Bedford Museum's site, and the Library of Virginia's death index for many of the Samuel McGhee descendants. Please tell me the sources that prove my Charles's parents. I want to collect as much original source material as I can.

My husband's great-grandfather was Charles Henon McGhee (the eldest son), and he became a Methodist minister. He married Laura Erwin Norris in Culpeper County (she came from a pretty well-to-do family), and they became somewhat itinerant. They started out in North Carolina, then Oklahoma and Texas. They followed his daughter Mary Cornelia to Tennessee and Arkansas. He was killed by a hit and run driver in Little Rock in 1937, and is buried in Memphis, Tennessee beside his wife.

Again, thanks for all your help. My direct e-mail is margaretrutledge@earthlink.net

Charles D. McGhee in Bedford and Campbell Counties, Virginia

I need the parents of Charles D. McGhee, who married Mary A. Craddock on 24 May 1858 in Bedford County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Dvid Craddock and Mary T. Ballard. In the 1850 census he was married to a Martha, by whom he had daughters Emma (born 1845) and Charlotte (born 1848). He was living in Campbell County at that time.

My Charles D. was born in 1823 and as near as I can tell spent his whole live in Bedford and Campbell Counties, Virginia. In 1850 he was living in Campbell County, in 1860, Bedford County, and in 1870 until he died, Campbell County. I have traced all of his sons through the census, but haven't looked up marriage records for the girls in Campbell County. There aren't any that make sense for them in the records online at the Bedford Virginia Museum. His widow and 2 of his sons spent their lives in Campbell County.

I am not sure where I got the information on Sookey's parents.
Samuel's parents are Carr McGhee and Elizabeth Chiles.
I have a note book on the whole Samuel McGhee family.
James D. was also married to Rachel Burson. 1st marriage. They had one child.
The only children I have for James D. and Mary Ann are Charles H., Robert Morton who m.
Ephraim is your husbands father? And sallie is your husbands mother right? Can you find out the name of Ephriams mother and father and if he had any brothers. and ask your husband or his father did he (ephriam) have an uncle who was executed for killing someone back in or around 1930. His name would have been McKinnley Burge. Or if Ephriam is not living, then maybe his wife is she is living may know something.

Honestly, I have no idea. My father never talked much about his family. His siblings were Sarah Belle, Margaret, and James McGhee. His sister were married, their last names unknown. I don't know if his siblings had children.
