Dear Pat,
I came across your message from 2007. It's interesting to me because my ancestor, John Francis Mack (born ~1884 in Ettrick, WI) married Nora Kennedy from Saginaw, MI. We've never been able to figure out how they ever met and speculated that maybe there were Mack relatives in Saginaw. By the way, when I say 'Mack', it is short for McGillicuddy.

I'd be interested to see your tree to see the siblings and parents of your ancestor John Francis McGillicuddy.

Bridget McGillicuddy

I'm looking for information on my great-great-grandmother, Bridget McGillicuddy.

Not much is known about her. My Grandmother didn't tell me much.

The bare facts are:

Sometime in the 1800's, Bridget McGillicuddy came to America from Ireland. She got a job as an upstairs maid to a wealthy New York family (whose last name is Nichols). When she was 14, she ran off and married the 15-year-old heir to the Nichols family. Her husband ended up being a very well-known judge in the New York Area. Their granddaghter was a woman named Dorothy Jean Nichols (whose married last names are Kelly and Passione respectfully).

Any info would be appreciated. Thank you!

What a great find! Do you happen to see an Edward McGillicutty from Pennsylvania He was born about 1830 in Ireland and married an Ellen Flannigan. They had one daughter, Hannah, and Edward died very young, soon after Hannah was born, around 1854. Thanks for taking the time to provide this great resource for all of us McGillicutty descendents.

My grandmother also thought we were related to Connie Mack. (her mother's maiden name was McGillicutty). If you note any McGillicutty's in your family tree from Pennsylvania would you please email me at Chanse@dishmail.net? My grandmother's mother was Hannah Julia McGillicutty b. 1854 in Pa and Hannah's father was an Edward McGillicutty, b. about 1830 in Ireland and died very young, shortly after Hannah was born.
Hi: I would be interested in getting your Word file with Mack relatives. I knew we were related to people named Roach because Connie Mack mentioned in his autobiography meeting a Roach in Missouri. Also I did the DNA testing for genealogy purposes & someone with an ancestor named Roach has 12 out or 12 DNA markers the same as mine. (This is tracking my mother's mother's line.)

Mary Burke
Arlington, VA

mvburke2@yahoo.com

My gr-gr grandmother is Mary Agnes McGillicuddy. She married David Joseph Roach (1834-1910) 20 Nov 1858 in East Windsor, Connecticut. Mary passed away 10 August 1899 in Jerseyville, Illinois. I have a small "Word" file which gives a little info about David & Mary if anyone is interested. Connie Mack's 1st cousin, Cornelius Roach, was the Missouri Secretary of State from 1909-1917.

Joy was Mary's mother's maiden name. Ellen Joy also went by the nickname "Nellie".
Hi, am looking for family members or people that could help me locate data on Cornelius McGillicuddy. He born about 1861,Ireland, moved to Buffalo,NY. Believe his parents are Patrick McGillicuddy and Honora O'Connor. Found a funeral sign in book, listing Mr.& Mrs Thomas Morrisey, James Mahoney, Jerimah,Joan,Michael,Catherine and Mary McGillicuddy. Believe the book was for either my Great Aunt Josephine McGillicuddy or Great Uncle Patrick McGillicuddy. Trying to do this research for my niece and nephew and grandson. Also believe some of these people buried at Holy Cross cemetery in Lackawanna,South Buffalo. Thanks for any help. Also would be glad to help anyone else doing research. Also Cornelius's daughter Margaret married my grandfather Robert Goss.

11 OCT 2007 Sorry about the message getting mixed up. Browsing and came across your message regarding your tree and took a look at Margaret McGillicuddy m a Pembroke I believe. Name is not in my tree, however the picture of Margaret is like staring into the eyes of my Dad.

William Jeremiah McGillicuddy son of Jeremiah Botius McGillicuddy and Olive Skimin. Grandson of John Francis McGillicuddy and Margaret Rice.

John Francis and Margret (Rice) McGillicuddy were married in MA. They settled in Saginaw MI area.

I guess I was stunned by the family resemblence in the picture. If you go to Ancientfaces.com and do a search on McGillicuddy you will see a picture of my Grandfather Jeremiah Botius McGillicuddy. There are several pictures out there for Skimins too. Never know when you might come across a thread.

Regards,

Pat (McGillicuddy) Ellis/MI

McGILLYCUDDY: Richard McGillycuddy 30.dec,2004

The McGillycuddy of The Reeks
(Filed: 15/01/2005)
The Daily Telegraph & telegraph.co.uk

The McGillyCuddy of the Reeks, who has died aged 56, was the last member of his family to live in their ancestral territory on the Iveragh Penisula in Co Kerry.

When, in 1985, he sold his home - also called The Reeks - and the last acres the family owned in Co Kerry, he severed a link that went back beyond the dawn of recorded history.

The McGillycuddys were a cadet branch of the O'Sullivans, once the most powerful family in the wild mountainous country in the south-west corner of Ireland. Like other Gaelic families, they fought the invading Normans and English over many centuries.

But unlike most Gaelic chieftains, the princely McGillycuddy eschewed exile, and stood his ground as the Gaelic order was finally crushed in the 17th century. Craftily, he sent sons to fight on both sides at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. A few years later he swore allegiance to the victorious William of Orange and conformed to the Established Church.

In succeeding generations his descendants intermarried with the new English Protestant Ascendancy, in the course of time effectively becoming part of it. The Reeks, their home at Beaufort, near Killarney, dates from the 18th century.

At the end of the 19th century, before the Land Purchase Acts, the McGillycuddy of the day owned 15,000 acres in Kerry. Richard McGillycuddy's grandfather, whose mother had injected American money into the family, distinguished himself in the First World War, winning the DSO and the Légion d'Honneur, and from 1928 to 1936 sat in the Senate of the Irish Free State as a supporter of the moderate WT Cosgrave and an opponent of the republican Eamon de Valera. In the Second World War he returned to the colours and became a regular informant on what was happening in neutral Ireland.

His grandson, Richard Denis Wyer McGillycuddy, was born on October 4 1948. Richard's father, the senator's son, who had succeeded in 1950, himself died in 1959 as a result of wounds sustained during the Second World War in the Northampton Yeomanry. At the time Richard was only 10 and still at his preparatory school before going on to Eton.

His English mother, although never feeling at home in Ireland, carried on dutifully at Beaufort to preserve the family inheritance for her son. Every August she organised a rather gentrified cricket match played on the lawn of the house - but it was abandoned around 1970 after young Richard, who had little interest in cricket and was not watching, was knocked unconscious by a mighty drive by a visitor who had played for the Cambridge Crusaders.

The young McGillycuddy's passion was cars, and he went into the motor trade in London after a brief sojourn at the University of Aix-en-Provence. He was unreceptive to the efforts of his uncle Dermot, a Dublin solicitor much beloved of McGillycuddys of every class and creed, to interest him in Ireland. Tall and dashing, the rugged and auburn-haired young McGillycuddy of the Reeks was much in demand in London among the Sloane Rangers.

Eventually, in 1983, at the age of 35, he married Virginia Astor, the granddaughter of the first Lord Astor of Hever.

Feeling that he had little in common with the local people in Kerry, McGillycuddy decided to sell the Reeks, and moved to France, where he acted as a property consultant to prospective British purchasers of chateaux and lesser French properties.

After the birth of his second daughter in 1990, the family returned to live in Ireland - not, however, in their ancestral territory, but nearer Dublin, where they rented a succession of houses, the last of them in Westmeath.

He continued to dabble in property, and latterly sold insurance; but it was a handicap that his upper-class English demeanour disappointed expectations raised by his Irish-sounding name. Although he could be charming in the appropriate company, he did not relate well to Irish people outside his own class. Meanwhile, despite poor health, his wife carved out a niche for herself doing valuable work as a prison visitor.

McGillycuddy was active in the council of Irish chieftains who had been recognised by the Irish Genealogical Office.

Richard McGillycuddy, who died on December 30, is survived by his wife and two daughters. He is succeeded by his first cousin, Donough, who lives in South Africa.

© Copyright of Telegraph Group Limited 2005.

Greetings,
My g/m was Annie McGillicuddy (1865-1966) born in Co.Kerry. She came out to Australia in mid 1880's with her two sisters and uncle James McG.
I would be pleased to see the Australian List of McG's.

It would be great for all McG's to start (not at top of tree, but bottom) recreating their tree - as coming from the top down is tough. So many changed names. I'd like to see where all McG's are connected to.
Bernie D'Arcy

Hi Jerome,
I'm from Australia. My g/m Annie McGillicuddy came out to Aust in mid 1880's (b. 1865 d.1966) and her father was Florence McGillicuddy. Mum was Julia Counihan. The McG's seemed to name offspring after relatives quite a lot. My g/m came from Glenflesk near Killarney.

I have often been curious about Valentine T McG of South Dakota. Have you read much about him?

I also see that quite a few McG's shortned their surnames to Mack or Cuddy.

Bernie D'Arcy

Mack for McGillicuddy

My experience with the surname McGillicuddy comes from a family of McGilliucddys who left Kerry and settled in New Brunswick, Canada in the 1840s. They were Roman Catholic and stuck by the traditional naming pattern for at least a generation.

All the children baptised in NB were done so at the St Dunstan's in Fredericton. In the records the name McGillicuddy was refered to as: McCuddy, McGilcuddy, and of course Mack. I have found that Mack is generally used as an affectionate name for McGillicuddy: remember the oft-mentioned-on-McGillicuddy-genealogy-lists Cornelius "Connie Mack" McGillicuddy? Sometimes that name just stuck or was taken.

WDR

I have Shea, Horgan (Horrigan), McGillicuddy, and Sughrue (Sugrue) family members all from Kerry Co, but my tree only goes back to early 1800s. My great, great grandfather was Michael McGillicuddy (http://hitdeep.com/RFT/individual.php?pid=I064&ged=rober...) and his wife was Ellen Horgan (aka Horrigan). I bet these are my relatives, and I'd love to fill in the blanks. Please take a look at my tree (http://hitdeep.com/RFT/) and let me know if you have any conncetions to share.

Thanks,

Chris Roberts
