Hi Neil:

I've been going down the boards at rootsweb and was searching the Glengarry area for any connections/information on my 2nd great grandfather Duncan Alexander McGillis, he was married to Ellen MacDonald. Parents: Duncan W McGillis and Catherine MacDonald. I'm finding conflicting information on his birth, Scotland vs. Canada. Any info on this line, I'd appreciate.

Cynthia
Sudbury, ON

Mark Howard McGillis was my grandfather - he died a few years ago and I remember visiting Virginia and Emma as a child. Mac (Mark) had a number of documents and was of the Little Shell of the Chippewa - they have a website and if you're interested I'm sure someone there might be able to give you more information. I'm not sure you'll ever see this message but I'm located in Columbia, SC and my parents are in Lexington, KY - we're probably the only McGillis's in the phonebook.

My grandfather was Mark Howard McGillis and I know he had a sister named Emma. Grampa died a few years ago when I was in college. I never really took the opportunity to learn much about our Indian hertiage from him - mostly because I grew up so far away from him.

But I think my father, Joseph McGillis has family information that Grampa Mac compiled. My understanding is that we are of the Little Shell of the Chippewa.

I have found reference to John McMullen, wife Reine McGillis or Gilles in various records. They are found in the Rimouski area of Quebec in the time period 1750-1816. some info states that they think the couple came from Scotland and one site naming other Gilles or Giles say France.
I would love to find their dates place of birth. There is a Gilles that came to Cape Breton, Canada in the middle 1700's as well.
I have more detail but don't know if it will help you.
Thanks
Gail

Gloria, I have a Donald and a Duncan McGillis both born to a Donald McGillis and my understanding is there sister is Isabelle or Isabella. I have the sons as having family as follows: Donald-8 sons and two daughters, Duncan-2 sons and 4 daughters. Duncan was apparently a merchant in St. Eustach, Lower Canada. The father Donald was a native of Scotland. These brothers would have been born further back than you are looking for as another one of their brothers sailed to New York in approximately 1773. If any of this is any help please let me know.
Linda

My cousin just found the following marriage record which is slightly different from your information. Can you tell me where your information came from.

JAMES YENNOR, 22, residing in Vankleek Hill, born in Canada, Labourier, son of Joseph Yennor & Caroline Eaton married Hattie McGillis, 21, residing in Caledonia, born in Canada, Spinster, daughter of John McGillis and Emelia McGillis. Congregational.
Witnesses: Frances Troce (Trace?) and Mrs. W. K. Anderson.
Clergyman Rev. W.K. Anderson at Vankleek Hill on December 21, 1893.
Ontario Registration # 010214 93.

We believe this Emelia McGillis was Emelia Hay related to our Hay line but so far have been unable to find any more information. Emelia's mother was Harriet/Hattie and we believe Hattie McGillis was the eldest of this family but again we are unable to locate any of these McGillis' on the 1881 census.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Leigh....

Hi Jodi: As I have it John McGillis (1912-1979) was son of John (1874-1955) s/o Donald born in 1835 in Scotland s/o Angus McGillis (1837-1892). Angus & wife had two sons born in Scotland, emigrated to Nova Scotia c. 1837 where three daughters were born in Cape Breton. The family then moved to Glengarry county, Ontario. They appear in the 1851 census
as "house guests " at Lancaster 5 C N 36. Donald McGillis married Janet Cameron there in 1867. They had 9 children.
their son John and his wife Margaret Krauswedel had 7 children, one of whom was your grandfather.

Just started going over my family tree.

My grandmother Emma McGillis b. 1916 in Montana she had a brother Mark(?) or Mac as well as two sisters, Virginia McGillis and Mary Sandle, the parents names were:
Louis McGillis b. 1875 in Sweetgrass Mt.
Margaret(Marguerite)Thomas b. 1884 in Havre Mt.

as far as I know we are part Chippewa, story goes that the tribe crossed into Canada during the hunting season. I remember cousins in Glacier Mt. have heard of cousins living in Great Falls,Havre & in Ontario, there may even be some relations in North Dakota at Turtle Mountain. My fathers name is Frank L. Powell.

Thanks

I don't know anything about this family before they came to Canada except that they were from the Isle of Skye (as stated on the gravestone in the St. Andrew's United Church in Bainsville, Ontario). I'd like to find out answers to your questions too. One of my contacts on the Glengarry County, Ontario Query Board has said he thinks the surname was Gillis in Scotland.

Hi Dana,

I have some information on what looks like the same McGillis family that you are into.. If so , we must somehow be related. I have a Donald McGillis as a native of Scotland. He had 8 sons and 1 daughter. Sons names were: John, Donald, Gillis, Randolph, Alexander, Hughey, Duncan, and Angus. One daughter named Isabel and or Isabella. Donald and Isabelle went to Manitoba, in the north west. This is a Quote from a letter written from Uncle Allan McGillis and passed on to my great uncle and then to my mother and me. The McGillis family and the McDonald/MacDonald are somehow related and I am trying to find out how and names and dates as to when and how the McDonalds/MacDonalds families got into it. I have other hand written information on the McGillis sons if you are interested. Email me direct if you like. Any connections to the McDonald/MacDonald family you might have would be greatly appreciated if you wish to pass it on.
Thanks in advance!
Linda
