Yes, I am interested in all branches of the family. I find that sometimes that helps me to gain info on the direct descendents. If you're interested in my info, I would be glad to send it. Tx, Bity

Hi,

I don't know how often you visit this message board. I am descended from a brother of your James and William McGinns of Quebec Canada. John McGinn was born in 1841 to that family and immigrated to Indian Lake, Hamilton CO, NY. Are you looking for all branches of this family or just the ones related to William and James. I gained a bit of valuable info from your post in the fact that the father James had married a Margaret Huggins.

Patrick McGinn and Mary Jane Macaulay were married 5/14/1861 in Ireland. They had 3 children there(possibly in Antrim) Francis, James and Alice. The family then came to Scotland where 4 more children were born:
Patrick,Charles,Rose and Margaret. Rose was married to a Macaulay and Alice to John Clark
Other names according to a very vague family letter include Bernard McGinn who may be a son of Patrick Jr. and Daisy McGinn (not sure where she fits in) the letter is quite old, and is signed by Daisy.
Thanks
Shanon Chaput
CHAPUTS4@AOL.COM

Hi,
Charles McGinn was also my great grandfather. My Dad, John (everyone calls him Jack) was the fourth son of your grandmom Anna's sister Mary. Mary died in 1935 of uterine cancer. Her daughter Catherine was living in the house on Oakley St. with the McGinn's. She lived their for almost all her life. We don't know why. When Mary died my grandfather, Pete Gaynor, put all the boys, there were six, in the Catholic Foster Care System. Once again, we don't know why. Because of that we have no pictures or history from the McGinn side. Catherine died when my father was in the service. He believes it was in 1945. I did meet Joe Grana (not sure of the spelling)who was Catherine's husband at Aunt Kit's wake. Aunt Kit, who I meet at Uncle Tom's viewing had promised to give us pictures of the family right before she moved to Wisconsin. I did talk to Tommy Pyle and he said he would look into it and that was the last I heard from him. That was a number of years ago. Anything you can tell us would be great. My dad is now 82 and he is the last surviving member of his siblings. Uncle Joe died last December and Uncle Bill died last month. With everyone gone it is tough to piece anything together. The Gaynors I have gotten some information on but not the McGinns.
I'm new to this, so I really haven't gotten too far, but I do know a lot about my grandmom's family, just from family stories.
Shoot me an e-mail!

Anne

McGINNs in Worcester, MA and Philadelphia

Hi all, I am looking for information on my McGinns. My gg grandfather, Thomas John McGinn (siblings Joseph and Mary Alice) was born in Durham, England in 1884 to John McGinn (born 1854 Ireland) (siblings Mary, Annie and Denis) and Ann Ruddy. John's parents were Patrick McGinn and Alice Mathews. Thomas immigrated to the US with his parents in 1887. They proceeded to Worcester, MA where John got a job at the Washburn Moen Steel Company. Alice arrived in Worcester at approximately the same time, dying in 1901 in Worcester. I am hoping this rings a bell with someone - it's been a major brick wall. Thanks.

Kevin McGinn

Try the following website. It is my family tree and it includes a number of datum that might be helpful to you. It seems to me that we are part of the same family.

James McGinn was Catholic and Married Methodist (Mary Lee). She is buried in a Methodist Cemetery and he in a Catholic one. They had a son, John, who was born in 1854.

I believe James had an older brother "John" who "fled" Ireland with him in and around 1825-1830. It is possible that your lineage traces from this side of the equation. I believer their father was also named "john" though I have been unable to confirm this.

Here is the link: http://www.themcginns.ca/themcginnfamilytree/index

Dear Pat,

I don't know the name of John's parents, unfortunately. All I know is that he came from Cavan, he was a teacher, and had the two brothers. He originally immigrated to Rhode Island with his two brothers, and then returned to Ireland to bring back a wife to Rhode Island.

My e-mail is Hoff8855@aol.com, let's continue this discussion via e-mail. I've posted a picture of the blacksmith shop in my tree, I think you'll be able to find it.
Best,

Leah

Hi Roisin,
My McGinn's are from Templepatrick in County Antrim (at least part of the branch is). Francis McGinn and his wife Alice Martin had one known son, Patrick born about 1832 in Ireland. He married Mary Jane McCauley May 14, 1861 in Randalstown, Antrim, Ireland and they had at least 8 children. The first 3 were born in County Antrim, Ireland. The family then immigrated to Scotland where the remaining 5 were born in Oakbank, Kirknewton, Ireland.
I would love to find more information on this family.
Thanks
Shanon

Hi John,
My DNA and some other FERGUSON match up to the McGINN DNA found in the study by McEvoy and Bradley of Trinity College; see http://tinyurl.com/pqu555

My ancestors are from county Cavan and my DNA is in the ancestry database. As the Trinity data is limited to 19 markers, I'd be interested to compare my DNA to yours but I can't find you when I search the DNA data by surname MCGINN. Perhaps you are part of a surname group and your data is only visible to people within that group?
Cheers,
Colin Ferguson
colin.fergie@gmail.com

JOHN MCGINN MILLE ROCHES, CORNWALL, UPPER CANADA

Hi All
My goodness, this is a quiet board.
I hope that means you have all found all your McGinns and their stories and connections!
Here is one family for your reading pleasure...Ha!

Very early in my research about 2003 I found the family of a John McGinn, born about 1815 Ireland.

According to a transcription of "The Cornwall Observer" this John McGinn married Sally (Sarah ) Barnhart of Barnhart's Island 20 Jan 1836.
"OK" thought I, my GGF John McGinn was born ca 1830 Upper Canada, place unknown parents unknown...so this 1836 marriage rules out this family as being "us".
Well just last week I found a tree at Ancestry.com stating a daughter Charlotte of this couple was born 11 July,1829.

This got me questioning the accuracy of the tree and/or of course the accuracy of the Cornwall newsie transcription.

By way of rationalization, it is well documented that early Upper Canada settlers would marry based on the presence of any circuit rider clergyman in the immediate area as a matter of convenience. Later they would marry in their own denomination when it became more readily available.
There are examples of Roman Catholic settlers married by Protestant clergy and later remarried in the Roman Catholic Church when it was established.
So I wonder if the above family had married before 1829, but not recorded or the records were lost etc.

The family did show in the 1851 Canada Census .Surname "MaGin".
No Daughter Charlotte enumerated but she had married George Knight Pond in 1848 so she would be living with him.
Sons William, 12 Arthur, 14 have given names appearing in our family
as Do daughters Elizabeth 8 Sarah 6 Margaret 4.

Although my mystery GGF John McGinn married Methodist in 1854, I theorize he WAS born into a Roman Catholic McGinn family. A Methodist marriage just may have caused a family feud or schism!
So I am looking for anyone in the know about this Cornwall family.
Best!
Rob McGinn
Hi
Thanks for the link and the interest in my McGinn dilemma.

I have known about James McGinn and Mary Lee almost from the beginning of my search 2002. Its a fascinating story about his having to leave Ireland in a hurry and he was obviously of aristocratic folks.
So he probably had some pretty good genetic background which would serve him well in his settling endeavors.

This is the first time I have heard about an older brother John and possible father of the same name.
I am open to all possibilities for our McGinn origins.
Trouble is that these early settler stories are hard to prove because the records just are not out there.
Research in Ireland is almost impossible unless one can narrow down to the Parish or townland/borough.

While I work on the possibility of a connection to your James I am also aware of 9 McGinn brothers who came over about 1830.
Trudi McGinn is a researcher of this McGinn family and she only knows of 3 brothers of the 9.
Best known was John McGinn who married Catherine Houlahan settling in the 6th concession of Matilda Tp., Dundas County, lot 11.
Just down the road on lot 8 was a branch of our Cook family.
(William Cook of Belfast m Rachel Shaver) A grandson, Robert Edgar Cook, knew both McGinn and Cook family history
so that has me wondering and curious!
Our John McGinn, GGF married Sarah Jane Cooke, probably William Cook's niece, 06 Dec 1854 in Lansdowne Tp., Leeds Grenville.
Like the family of James and Mary, 6 of their adult children moved west to Seattle and Vancouver, while my GF William stayed in Orillia Ontario.
The search goes on!
Rob McGinn
Hi

Just wondering where in Canada James McGinn was born and who his parents were? My GGF John McGinn was born about the same time 1828-1833 in Upper Canada now eastern Ontario near Brockville - Cornwall area somewhere.
If the varius census are accurate John had a twin sister Mary Ann who married a Morris. Parents are my brick wall.

Early McGinns in Ontario include John A. McGinn in Matilda who married Catherine Houlahan, supposedly one of 9 brothers who came over, see Jack Scott's post, William McGinn and Arthur McGinn in Cornwall area and also John McGinn in Mille Roche near Cornwall. He married 1836 Sarah Barnhart. He was a turner/joiner/cabinet maker. The family is in the 1851 census as "MaGin".
The spelling variations are something else!
Furthere west James McGinn who did a number on one of Daddy's favourite race horses in Ireland, left Ireland in a hurry and settled Cobden area, Ottawa Valley, married Mary Lee. She was Presbyterian but James remained a Roman Catholic and the many children were raised Presbyterian. His family spread far and wide north and west.
See my very recent post for a McGinn family briefly in Augusta Tp 1830s, near Brockville.
There was a UE Loyalist family of McGuins in Kingston and a UEL Magin/McGinnis family in Bath and on Amherst island too
They have both names but McGinnis has survived as their family name.
There were McGinns early on in Franklin Vermont and in St Lawrence County, NY., also in Beauharnois Quebec.
Those are some, not all, McGinns in early Canada or near the boarder.
Rob McGinn in Thunder Bay, Ontario

JACOB MCGINN, Mystery, Upper Canada 1830s.

My great grandfather John McGinn was born in Upper Canada about 1830, somewhere near Brockville, Elizabethtown, Leeds County, now eastern Ontario.Parents unknown.
I have been searching and posting this board for several years trying to connect to another McGinn clan. Nada!
I have concentrated my search on Leeds Grenville, Brockville area and I have only found one trace of a McGinn family there, 1830s.
At Ancestry.ca I found:
JACOB MCGINN, living Finch Tp. ( east of Brockville) born Augusta Tp ( less east of Brockville), 26, s/o JOHN and LATISHA MCGINN, married SARAH MCCADDEN/MCFADDEN?, 20, d/o ALEXANDER and MARY MCFADDEN or MCCADDEN, 01 April,1858 in Stormont County. ( Finch Tp. is in Stormont County)
I looked for both McCadden/McFadden and John and Latisha in the 1851 census with no luck. Jacob, born about 1832, in Augusta is not there either.
Family history Film 1030065.
Any McGinns out there have a John and Latisha or Jacob as Ancestors?
Rob McGinn in Thunder Bay
Hello Roison
I am a McGinn here on the north shore of Lake Superior, Thunder Bay Ontario Canada.
I am stuck on my McGinn brick wall.
I know my GGF John McGinn was born in Canada in 1830+/- 2 years.I do not know his parents.
He was said to have been born near Brockville Ontario, Then Upper Canada, Leeds Grenville County.
The family is said to be from Northern Ireland ( Ulster)and originally Roman Catholic. GGF John married in 1854 Methodist (and he remained methodist) Sarah Jane Cooke d/o Robert Cooke and S Jane Griffith.
Robert was either of Belfast or Cavan origin so I have Cookes in Ulster as well to confuse our vague story.
Incidently S Jane Griffith was supposed to be the disowned daughter of Richard Griffith of Maiden Hall Kilkenny.Robert Cooke had been a gardener on his estate and eloped with his 16 year old daughter S Jane.
No heirlooms connect me to any Parish or Townland.
I can supply you with a reasonably complete family history from John and Sarah Jane on, 1854-2009.
There is a family story that one of my ancestors had been educated for the Priesthood but never followed that career.

Only other clue I can muster came from Sarah Jane Cooke McGinn in the 1891 Canada census now online at Ancestry.com.
She stated John was Born in Quebec to a father from Ireland and a mother from the USA.
All other census have John McGinn born in Upper Canada and not Quebec, but it is very possible his mother was from the 13 colonies or later the USA. That would explain another part of our story that we have a U. E. Loyalsit connection.
Where did Quebec come from ?? Sarah Jane McGinn could not read or write her own name so she may have had a mistaken notion about Quebec, when interviewed by the census enumerator.( John McGinn was away visiting his son William in Orillia at the time)

I am well represented with a 43 marker test for Y-DNA and I would like to find a match to help break down this McGinn brick wall! I encourage all McGinns out there to get involved in DNA testing.Discover some cousins you never knew!
John Robert A McGinn, Thunder Bay
My mother's mother was Marie McGinn. She married Walter Miller from Norwalk. Her sister was Alice who died at an early age. Marie McGinn Miller, my grandmother, mother with my grandfather, Walter Miller to Cleveland, Ohio. My mother, Mary Emerson Miller, was born in Cleveland. As a young child we would go back to Norwalk to visit Great Grandma McGinn (Great Grandpa McGinn was already deceased. I remember meeting Grandma's sister, Carrie McGinn Lamphier (sp.?). My Grandma, Marie McGinn Miller, died in 1995. I believe she was maybe one of only 2 of the McGinn children still alive. I have the wedding portrait of Grandma & Grandpa McGinn in Norwalk!!!!!!! Great Grandpa McGinn - James - worked on the railroad, I think he may have been an engineer. I believe there were 11, 12 McGinn children? Some of the names not already mentioned - Carl, Miles???? I also have a photo of Margaret Grossweiler!!!! I am a Great Grandchild to James & Mary McGinn of Norwalk. Any of this familiar? Jackie Mackin Hartman

Hi,

I'm looking for a great aunt, Elizabeth/Eliza McGinn, born circa 1874 in County Tyrone, Ireland. All I know of her is that she became a nun, Sister Mary of Nazareth and moved to Louisiana. I don't know which (Roman Catholic) order she joined. I don't know if she joined before or after moving to the USA.

Can anyone suggest an organisation in Lousiana I might contact for more information?

Regards etc.

Descendants of William John McGINN & Mary McGRATH

We have only recently discovered our grandfather had 9 siblings (we were told of only 1). Have been able to fill in a lot of blanks through various sites...some of William and Mary's children (our grandfather's parents) remained in Liverpool, England - others ventured across to USA.

William (from Belfast Ireland born c. 1858) and Mary (from Dundalk, Louth Ireland b c. 1862) married 7 Sept. 1882 in Liverpool.

Their children:
Mary Ann (Annie) McGinn (b: 1894 Liverpool) married Richard Lovelady 27 July, 1908. We do know that Annie died on 5th April at the Rodney Nursing Home (was/is Liverpool UK area)as there was a cutting in Granpa's papers, but it didn't state the year.
Annie & Richard had son Bernard Robert b:1914 d: 1997.
Other children? Did Bernard marry? GrandChildren?

Eleanor (Nellie) McGinn b: 12 Feb 1886 Liverpool. Married? Children?

Mary McGinn (b: 1888 Liverpool) married Joseph Bennett in 1913.
Children: Terence 1914 - Monica 1916 - Bernardettte 1924. Who did they marry? Children?

The other children of William & Mary were:
John b 1890 (lived in New York)
Marriage and children?
Nora Margaret who married James MADDEN (lived New York)- son Philip born NY in 1926. Other children?
Philip's marriage and children?
William James who married Anna (surname unknown). They lived in Boston
daughter Mary born Boston 1917
son John born Boston 1926
Marriage and children?
Gertrude Gladys b 10 June 1895 (probably resided New York)
Marriage and children?
Austin who married Eleanor Thompson (lived New York)
son Vincent born Brooklyn NY 1931 - Died 1995
Other children? Vincent's marriage and children?
Agatha Madeline b: 1901 (travelled frequently to US and lived in NY & Boston)
Marriage and children?
and our Grandfather Vincent Gerald who married Alma Rigney (lived Sydney Australia). Family details known!

We have tracked their life journeys in America 1915-1930's, their marriages (some), their children (some) and their passing (some).

We have the death dates for William James, Nora, Austin & Eleanor (and their son Vincent).

Most of the information so far for the American family side is via Passenger Lists and Census, Social Security which has been fantastic

Is there a way of locating birth and marriage index details (mostly would be Mass. and NY)for USA for 1930-current so we can find 2nd cousins and extended family?

If anyone has knowledge of, or is part of these families (UK or USA families) we would love to hear from you (and we will reply!)

As we are new to this family history exploration, please forgive if we ask too many questions!!!

Thank you very much.
