McGlasson, Norris, Hill connections in Kentucky

The 1850 Census for Cumberland Co., KY, lists Francis McGlasson, 48, b. abt. 1802 in Virginia, living in the household of Eliza Norris, 44, b. abt. 1806 in Virginia. Also living with Eliza was William Norris, 22; James T., N.H., 14 (a dghter), and John M., 11.

The 1860 Census for Cumberland Co., has William Hill, 30, b. abt 1830, Amanda Sexton Hill, 20, wife; James A. Hill, 1. Living next door is Eliza Jane Norris, 55; John Norris, 21; Nancy F. Yates, 22; Mary E. Yates, 1; James T. Norris, 26; Nancy Norris, 30, and Mary E. Norris, 1.

Living a few doors away is Thomas H. McGlafson, 62, born in Virginia; Francis McGlafson, 60, born in Virginia; Mary Ann, 33; Jane, 19; Susan, 20; Sarah Ann, 14; and Lucy Jane, 12.

In the 1870 Cumberland Co., KY, census in William Hill, 40; wife Amanda Sexton Hill, 27; J.A. Hill, 12; L.A. Hill, 10; M.L. (or perhaps M.S.)Hill, 6; Carrie, 2; M.F. McGlassen, 72, born in Virginia; and Eliza Norris, 65, born in Virginia.

How are the McGlasson, Norris and Hil families connected? It would seem that 1870 M.F. McGlasson is the Francis mentioned in 1850 and 1860 Cumberland census records? Are Francis McGlasson and Eliza Norris sisters? Are Thomas H. McGlafson, 62, and Francis McGlafson, 60, husband and wife? How are Francis McGlasson and Eliza Norris related to the William Hill family? Are they related to William or to his wife Amanda Sexton? Are both women dead by 1880, since neither appears in the 1880 Cumberland census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for my "McGlosson" relatives, and have found the name spelled several ways, including McGlasson. I have found John Will McGlosson in Grant County, Kentucky in 1850, and several of his decendants in various places in Kentucky, but have not found where he was born. I have some information that suggests he was born in Missouri. Since most traveled from east to west, my McGlossons probably came through Virginia.

Anyone have any information about Kentucky or Missouri McGlossons (McGlassons)?

Martha J. McGlasson -- Illinois, Mahaska Co., Iowa

I am looking for any information on my 2nd g-grandmother, Martha J. McGlasson. She was born in Illinois in February 1837. She married Daniel Snyder around 1873 in Mahaska Co., Iowa. In one census the birthplace of both of her parents is listed as Kentucky. At first glance, I thought she must be the daughter of Israel and Mary (Kelley) McGlasson who came to Mahaska Co., Iowa from Illinois. However, they had a daughter Martha A. McGlasson a couple of years off of Martha J. McGlasson's birthdate. Any help would be appreciated.

I have just found further information on my 2nd g-grandmother, Martha J. McGlasson. In the 1880 census of Malcom Twp, Powesheik Co., Iowa it appears that she had been married one time before she was married to my 2nd g-grandfather, Daniel Snyder. Her first husband's last name may have been Whitsett. Martha's daughter, Ida Whitsett (age 22) was living with the family during the 1880 census. However, I am still not any closer to connecting Martha with the McGlasson family in Mahaska Co., Iowa. Any help would be appreciated.

I have finally found the census record which connects Martha J. McGlasson with the rest of the McGlasson clan in Iowa in the 1850s. The 1850 census for District 13, Wapello Co., Iowa (p. 454) shows her as the daughter of Joseph F. McGlasson. She would have been from his first marriage to Mahala Mars (5 April 1832 in Morgan Co., Illinois). In 1850, Joseph was married to a Sarah. Some sources give her maiden name as Butter; however, this census has 8 year-old James W. Butter living with the family (possibly/probably Sarah's son from a prior marriage). Sarah would have been about 21 when he was born.

McGLASSON, Morris - Massac Co., IL

I have no connection to this family, but am posting the info in hopes it will help someone. This appeared in the Metropolis Planet (Metropolis, Massac Co., IL) on January 19, 2005, it appeared in a section entitled, "Yesterday's News".

85 Years Ago, Republican Herald, January 22, 1920:

"Another aged Civil War veteran of unswerving loyalty to the flag has laid down at last to rest in pleasant dreams. MORRIS MCGLASSON, 75, died early last Friday morning at his home at the corner of 7th & Catherine streets. The deceased had for several years suffered from a chronic illness and his death did not come altogether as a surprise. He was a member of Co., "C", 43rd Illinois Infantry and enlisted from Hardin County on September 1, 1861. He was discharged for disability on October 26, 1863. The funeral was preached last Sunday by Rev. Schumard with burial in the Second cemetery [I.O.O.F.] near town. He is survived by two sons - John and Frank. His wife preceded him in death by five weeks."

I will keep this article for a few weeks in case someone is interested in obtaining it.

I am also related to Jane 'Widow English' Robertson and William Mc Glasson. My Great Great Grandfather Randolph Binns 1801-1887 married Elizabeth Mc Glasson 1807-1871 (dau. of Jane and William and I believe sister to Nancy) in Kentucky in 1824. They were both born in Virginia. Elizabeth died in 1871 in Pike Co., Illinois. Randolph later died in 1887 in Bowling Green, Missouri where he was living with his daughter Kiturah (nee Binns) Bagby. I have pictures of Randolph and Elizabeth. I also have a letter which was written to my father Walter Scott Binns prior to his death in 1980. It recounts a family story which stated that Charles F. English (first husband of Jane Robertson) actually abandond Jane Robertson after being injured in a robbery in which he lost his memory. He then married and began another family. When his memory returned he chose to stay with his new family. I will have to look for the letter ( i have hundreds) in order to quote you the source.
My line:
Randolph Binns and Elizabeth (nee Mc Glasson)
Henry Clay Binns and Sarah Brown (nee Stuart)
Fred Clay Binns and Elizabeth Jane (nee Crawford)
Walter Scott Binns and Peggy Antonia (nee Mc Sweeney)
Peggy Ann (nee Binns) and Jeffery Lynn Agraviador

Please respond if you would like to share more information.

Peggy Binns-Agraviador
Castro Valley, Ca.

I am looking for a McGlasson family that would have been living in Boone County in 1842. Not real sure of first names, but believe the wifes name to be Caroline Noe McGlasson.

I am still looking for information regarding a Samuel Dinsmore
who married Marticia McGlasson in Scott County Illinois in 1843. I would like to know his date and place of birth, his date and place of death.
They had one son that I know of: my ggrandfather, Scotland Dinsmore b. 1846 in Iowa or Illinois. There may have been other children or marriages for Samuel, but I'm not sure.
Samuel must have died before 1850, because Marticia (one of many spellings of her name) went on to marry a Benjamin Smith in Scott County Illinois in 1850. She had another marriage to a Ralph Blattner sometime around 1880-1885, but I can't find anything positive on Samuel.
I will be happy to exchang information with anyone who would be interested.
Thanks: jackieclement@comcast.net

Would you have any more information regarding the Dinsmore/Mcglasson connection in Iowa? Samuel Dinsmore was my gg grandfather, and I know nothing about him, except that he married Marticia McGlasson in 1843 and they had one son that I know of, who was my grandfather. It could have been Samuel's second or third marriage, and he could have other children. I would like to know where and when he was born and when he died. I have an aproximate date on Marticia of about 1884. She spelled Marticia several different ways. I would truly appreciate any information you would be willing to share.

ORIGINS OF WILLIAM MCGLASSON OF VIRGINIA

David Dobson in his 1989 supplement to "The Original Scots Colonists of Early America" lists John McGlashan and Margaret McGlashan who were transported from Newhaven (port close to Edinburgh) to Virginia in 1696. Information comes from the Scottish Record Office, Register House, 15.14.58. There is no further information in the book. The numbers 15.14.58 identify the document location at Register House.

I think that John McGlashan may possibly be an ancestor of William McGlasson.

My Mother was Jeanette's daughter Georgia Edith (Waters) Hardie, known to the family as Edith. This is a line of the family that is best left to the information from Jesse. I know little of the McGlasson Story, but hope to get more information from Jess. I did not know Tabitha had any sisters or brothers.

So glad I found this message! You may be surprized to find out how many 'cousins' we have! The first reunion I attended was enjoyed by over 400 relatives.

Glad to have met you!
Anne
