I'm looking for the father of Alfred McGonigal born about 1913. I have traced his family from Juniata county PA, Franklin county PA, to Kansas then back to Cumberland and Perry county in PA. Have you come across an Alfred, Samuel, Lydia or Rowland from any of the above counties? Thank you.

Gene

Re: George Mcgonigal (Megonigal) revolutionary war

Steve,

I would be so grateful for any crumbs of information you might find. I have pretty complete information on my Samuel and his descendants, but Samuel's parents have been my biggest brick wall for over 10 years. All four of Samuel's sons fought Union in the Civil War, so I feel there was either a strong military tradition in the family, or a strong sense of justice. If they had a grandfather who fought in the Revolution that might have fostered their inclination to join - or maybe, if Samuel's father was indeed born in Ireland, they were just fightin' Irish! All four sons survived though one (Orris N.) died later at age 30 and another (George N.) at age 40.

I have found numerous spellings of McGonigal also, sometimes two in the same document. Variations from Geauga Co., OH alone include Magunnigal, Magunigal, McGunigal, and McGonegal as well as our current spelling of McGonigal. The one I've not seen is McGonigle, which is a common modern variation.

Have you found anything that would indicate yours were from Ireland rather than Scotland? With the Presbyterian background my hunch is that mine are Scots-Irish; Irish who migrated to Scotland and intermmarried with the Scottish Presbyterians.

If nothing else I bet we are dealing with brothers or cousins. As you said, how many McGonigals could have been here in the 1700s?

Vanette

Hello. Thanks for your reply.
I don't think it's the same Samuel Megonigal. My great, great, great, great grandfather, Samuel was born in NJ @ 1796. I'm not sure if George was his father or grandfather as I found a marriage certificate for Henry Megonigal for 1792. Census records show Maria as Samuel's wife. All the records I've found for George indicate he was in NJ in 1778 when he joined the NJ regiment.

I did find 1767 criminal court records for a George McGonigal (McGonagle) in PA for fornication and other unspecified offences. I suppose this could be the same George and perhaps he migrated to NJ to start anew or it may be that this George stayed in the PA area and wasn't the one who fought in the war.

I do have all the Quatermaster pay records for George. He enlisted in Jan. of 1778 and served through the entire war. He was at Valley Forge where he became ill and was listed as a deserter when he went home to Burlington Co. He rejoined the regiment a month later.

There are many spellings of his name on the pay records - Megonigal, McGonigal, McGonagle. It appears that my branch of the family settled on "Megonigal" by the 1840 census.
My burial records indicate that my family was also Protestant so I would not be surprised if there was a connection somewhere between our families - how many McGonigals were here prior to the Revolutionary War?

I keep stumbling upon new information and will let you know if I can find a link.

Steve Megonigal

We have been trying to see if we have a connection to George McGonigal for years. My ancestor is Samuel McGonigal born in Cross Creek Township, Washington County, PA on June 23, 1801. This area was originally part of Augusta County, Virginia (now WV). He died in Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. The Federal Mortality Schedule shows his father was born in Ireland, mother in Scotland.

His wife was Elizabeth "Betsey" BRONSON, born 1810 in Connecticut. Her ancestors include REMINGTONs, MARSHes, and SAWYERs of CT and Massachusetts.

From History of Washington Co., PA; "Cross Creek was settled predominantly by Presbyterians. Cross Creek Village was the oldest settlement in the township. Its first church dates to 1779 and many early settlers are buried in its cemetery."

Does any of this sound as if it might connect?

Vanette

McGONAGIL, C.O. in Oregon

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Mary McGonigal, Brooklyn NY - d. 1965

Hi.

Wondering if anyone out there might have this lady in their family tree? I discovered her buried in a family burial plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Wyndmoor, Cheltenham, PA. (right outside of Phila.)

She lived in the Brooklyn, NY and died at the age of 30. She was buried on 18 Oct 1965.

The plot was owned by my grand-uncle Michael Collins (he died in 1922). His wife Julia is buried there (d. 1918) as is his sister Margaret (d. 1920). There are three other people besides Mary buried here - none of whom I know but suspect are descended from other Collins siblings.
Mary M. O'Connell (Shurs Lane in Manayunk, Phila. buried 9 Sept 1953, age 82)
Joseph Hennessey (buried 2 Jan 1998, age 86)
Julia B. Hennessy (buried 2 Jun 1998, age 91)

Thanks.

Patrick McGonigal - Culdaff, Ireland born around 1868

Hi,

I too am looking for Patrick McGonigal from Culdaff (maybe Carthage). He was born abt. 1868 in Culdaff, Ireland. Arived in the US in 1888 and became a citizen in Delaware on 20 Oct 1892. I can not be sure of what he did between 1888-1892. I can not find him on a 1890 census for DE and I can not find him on an 1888 passenger list going from Ireland to the US. I did find a Patrick McGinnis (maybe they mispelled his name) who went from Ireland to NY and arrived in NY on Oct. 8, 1888. I also found some possible Patrick's in NY & NJ on the 1890 census. Once Patrick arrived in DE he married Elizabeth Agnas Monigle in 1894. They lived in Henry Clay, DE for the 1900 Census. They had 7 kids from 1895- 1905 (Mary, William, Anna, Elizabeth, Hugh, James & Joseph). Patrick died shortly after Joseph was born abt. 1906. I am not sure how he died.

I know they started keeping birth certificates in Ireland in 1864, but I can not find any Culdaff ones online (Carthage in paticular). I also looked for baptismal info through the parishes and struck out there as well. I did find records for other parts of Donegal and I found a few Patrick's born or baptised around 1868 but I could not find one for 1868.

Is anyone familiar w/ him? I would like to know who his parents & siblings are & where exactly in Donegal he is from. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Bill,

I too am looking for Patrick McGonigal from Culdaff. I see your post is from 2001 and I am wondering if you were able to make a connection to Culdaff by now? I am pretty sure I am your niece because I keep finding you in all of my research and we have a lot of the same relatives. Here is what I have been able to gather for Patrick. Born abt. 1868 in Culdaff, Ireland. Arived in the US in 1888 and became a citizen in Delaware on 20 Oct 1892. I can not be sure of what he did between 1888-1892. I hope you are doing well & would like to discuss other parts of our family tree w/ you as well. Any insight that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated...

John and Fred McGonigal, b. OH 1874 & abt. 1878 -- descendants?

John M. and Fred Marsh McGonigal are brothers. Fred was born in Cleveland, OH and John probably was. Their father died in 1885 and I can't find their mother, Olive Malone McGonigal, after the 1880 census.

I cannot find John on a census after 1880. There are three John McGonagles (sic) on the 1900 census in Ohio but either the parent's names or birthplaces don't fit.

The SSDI has a John McGonagle (sic) b. October 10, 1877 died May 1971, SS# 294-28-8079 issued Ohio; death residence North Olmstead, Cuyahoga County, Ohio 44070. This may be the John I'm looking for, although the spelling McGonigal has been unusually consistent throughout the family records.

I have traced Fred through 1930. He married a Samuella M. of Sweetwater, TN about 1919 and they had a daughter, Anne W., on 25 April, 1923. In 1930 they lived at 3028 Andrews Drive, Buckhead, Fulton County, Georgia. Fred was an official for Merchants Towel Supply. Living with the family was Maud Antley, governess; David Lizzie, cook; George Johnson, servant; and Emma Si???, maid.

A 1930 passenger list for ship arrivals from Southampton, England gives the same address; one in 1923 shows them living in Atlanta, GA. Apparently they could afford to travel or he went on business and took the family with him.

Going back to 1920, I find a Fred M. McGonigal, boarder, married, with all other info matching, living in the Hotel Maryland in Pasadena, California, occupation none. Samuella is not listed with him. It may not be the same person but I strongly suspect it is.

I would especially like to find any living descendants of this family. Unless Fred's daughter Anne had children, it appears that my children and I are the very last of our McGonigal bloodline going back to my ggggrandfather Samuel who was born in 1801. Anne might still be alive.

Any leads or info greatly appreciated!

Vanette
