Pete -- I'm sorry I don't have any specific information about your grandfather other than the information that can be found in the census records. However, if you're looking for a long-lost relative, you have found one! My husband's grandfather, Kenneth Lionel McGough, was the younger brother of your grandfather, Malcolm F. McGough. So, your father and my husband's mother (Jean Yvonne McGough Smith) were first cousins.

Please let me know if you'd like to get in touch. I realize your original message was 8 years ago! She was born on or around 1905 and came to New York, on June 14th, 1926.

I have looked everywhere and just can't seem to find if the family is still in the area.

Sarah,
last email I found on list bounced back to me. I'm searching for McGoona and had email contact with Tom McGoona. He suggested I try to contact you because you had emailed him sometime back and apparently your email is out of date. Please reply directly to me rather than the list. I'm not sure if you are searching McGough or McGoona (but probably very close). Think it was something about your grandmother from near Navan.
Thanks
Nancy
email: nposs1936@verizon.net

June 19, 2008
Tom, are you related to Tony & Paula McGoona in Navan? Surely you must be. I was in Ireland about 5 years ago and meet up with Paula's father, Tom Loughran. I talked to Tony and Paula on the cellphone while I was at Blarney. I was on a tour and had about 3 hours visit with Tom before I had to leave to continue my trip.
I am doing research on family genealogy. My mother's maiden name was Magoonaugh - pronounced the same as McGoona with the different spelling. We are trying to see if we are truly related.
My email is: nposs1936@verizon.net

Hi Mary,
I have found out that my father's uncle, Henry McGough, left Ireland in the 1920s or 1930s and settled in Reno, Nevada. Apparently, Henry returned once to Ireland for a visit in the 1960s. My father believes that Henry's second wife accompanied him on this trip. Are you aware of a second wife? Henry had four siblings, two brothers who remained living locally and two sisters who emigrated to the United States and did not return. Henry was the youngest of the five. My grandfather, Henry's brother, was born in 1905 and died in 1975.
Does any of this mean anything to you or any of your family members? Could my grand uncle Henry McGough be your grandfather?

Hello Michelle:
I believe we have been in contact before but my computer has crashed several times over the past few years with much of my genealogy info lost.
I have been in contact with Liz McGough and established a connection to my gg grandparents; Thomas D. Cambell b. 1825, NY and Rose McGough b. 1825, Co. Louth, IRL Without doing a lot of lookups, I believe Thomas and Rose lived in Geneva, NY (Ontario County but near Yates and Penn Yann). My Campbells later established themselves in Seneca Falls, Seneca County.
Drop me a line if these connect with your McGough's.
Best regards from Western NY
Chuck Keenan
charlesmkeenan1@yahoo.com

Re: McGoughs from Castlebar and vicinity

Sandra,

Sorry I took so long to respond to your reply to my message re: McGough. I haven't visited this McGough message board for some time.

My GGF was a Thomas McGough from Mount Gordon in the townland of Knockaphunta, just SE of Castlebar town. He was the son of Patrick McGough and Anne Ronane and the Grandson of John McGough and a woman surnamed Moran. He was probably the brother of the Patrick McGough (c. 1842) who Boatsport is researching.

Thomas and his wife, Bridget Tuohy, had six children, five of whom emigrated to Chicago. The sixth, Peter McGough remained in Knockaphunta.

Snugborough, from whence your Thomas McGough came, is not far from Knockaphunta, NNE of Castlebar town, probably walkable in those days. I believe there are McGoughs in Snugborough 'til this day.

My guess is that the McGoughs in the vicinity of Castlebar are mostly related, because relatively speaking there are not many of them. They might descend from John McGough (c. 1790) and his siblings and/or cousins. Just a guess.

Do you know who the parents of your ancestor, Bridget McGough, are? How about her siblings? Perhaps she is descended from a brother of my GGGF, Patrick McGough (c. 1815)

Frank Dynan
To: Sandra BrunsmannHughes
FromRon McGough, boatsport@comcast.net
Below is a letter I received from South Mayo Family Research Centre
I believe my great grandfather and ggm were Patrick McGough and Ann Ronan(e), below, but do not yet have good proof of that.

Dear Mr. Ronald McGough:
Thank you for your request for a search of County Mayo records of births and baptisms for Patrick McGough son of Patrick McGough and Ann Ronan(e) born circa 1841

Civil records of births did not commence in Ireland until 1864. No record of the baptism of Patrick was found. However, Patrick McGough and Anne Ronane of Mount Gordan (located on the Westport road on the outskirts of Castlebar) are recorded as the parents of:

1. Thomas McGough, baptised 27 January 1843 (sponsors: Patrick Ronane and Mary Ronane). This child apparently died in infancy as a second Thomas was baptised later.
2. Thomas McGough, baptised 4 December 1843 (sponsors: Patrick Ronane and Mary Ronane).
3. Anne McGough, baptised 10 September 1848 (sponsors: James McGough and Mary McGough).
4. James McGough, baptised 22 December 1853 (sponsors: Patrick Ronane and Judith Ronane).
I regret not having a more positive reply to offer. Your search fee, less the handling charge, will be refunded to your account shortly.

Yours sincerely,
Gerard M. Delaney.
South Mayo Family Research Centre
You don't mention your grandfather's name or where he lived before he arrived in the US. Also, do you know if he had any siblings and their names?

I am looking for info on my gggf. His name has been spelled Jehu & Gehue and also just Hugh. Born in AL about 1831. In 1861 he was in Jonesboro, AR where enlisted in Civil war. After the war, he settled in Lake City,AR and was the only McGough in this area. I have been unable to connect with any of his relatives. Would appreciate any info. Thanks. Vicki

There is a good chance that JayHugh McGough was the John McGough, age 39, farmer, born in Alabama, listed in the 1870 census of Maumell township, Craighead county, Arkansas. He was the son of James Madison McGough and his first wife, Polly Rasberry. Check the references in my web page: McGoughs and McGues in the 1870 Census of the United States.
