For my family records, would you be willing to send me a copy of the letter that he wrote to Caroline? You can send me a message at j.knepper@comcast.net.

I have no idea. All I know is that is the name on my mother's birth certificate and since her mother was not married, and she died when my mother was only 8, it was never discussed. Now we have waited so long that any of my mother's Aunts or Uncles who might have had an insight are all deceased. The Gwaltney family moved, I believe it was the late 1930s to PA, with only a couple of the Aunts remaining in the Pineville, Welch area until their deaths. If you have any thoughts I'd so appreciate it. My mother is now 78, suffering with memory issues and just fought off cancer. It has been her wish I'm sure her entire life to know something of that family, but, time is now of the essence. Thank you. - Laurie

I am back again to my search for Graham McGrady as my mother is 78 and in ill health. I have little information, which may not be accurate. He would have met Dottie Gwaltney around 1930 in Coalwood. May not have known she became pregnant. Assumption is he was a coal miner, she was cooking in a boarding house there. My mother was born September 16, 1931. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

All I have was what I have researched on and I believe other family members have found. I do have most information on the Family on down. My Great Grandmother Dollie Ann McGrady was from the same lines as yourself. I am still working on more things on this family and all the people that I need to ask the questions to are no longer with us, including my Father, so this is just another fascinating part of my family that I am researching. The more I learn the longer I stay on my computer searching. Here is my email address that you can email me at anytime: CAMM0313@aol.com (after the second M is a Zero not the letter O)

Hope to hear from you soon and its great to know that along our lines we have quite a few family members out there and doing family ancestry I have got to know many from all the family members linked to me.

CherylAnn

Hello this is also an Ancestor of mine. My lines go as follows: Dollie Ann (McGrady) Mabry married Sylvester Lee Mabry - her father was Andrew Jackson McGrady (Jr.) married Rebecca Ann Cruise - Andrew Jackson's father was Jackson McGrady (aka Andrew Jackson McGrady, Sr. as listed in some of the census) married Hannah Thompson (my Grandmother has her last name listed as Thompkins - which was given to her by Dollie McGrady) - Jackson's (aka Andrew Jackson, Sr.) father was William McGrady married Lucy Spence (aka Spense on some census records and family books)- William's father
Jacob McGrady married Amiah (unknown maiden name) - Jacob's father was Laughlin McGrady born in Ulster, Northern Ireland and is listed as also living in Wilkes, North Carolina and moved to Bedford County, Virginia from someone on Ancestry they have his wife listed as Mrs. Laughlin McGrady born in Bedford County, Virginia abt 1710 children listed as: Christina, Nancy, Jacob and Mary Polly McGrady. Sometimes back then women were listed as Mrs. and the husbands first and last name which I have found on many of my other family ancestors census. Also on a member of Ancestry someone has Laughlin's father listed as Unknown first name McGrady born in Ulster, Northern Ireland and most likely died there as well born abt 1690 and Unknown Wife. My Grandmother has written some information down years ago and I still have to go through boxes so that I can find what she did have as far as the lineage on the McGrady's. Hope this helps.

Re: McGrady, Irish? Scottish? Scots-Irish? All the Above?

Ancestry.com lists McGrady as Scottish. However, when you search the McGrady surname on the census images, there is rarely an indication that anyone was born in Scotland. 99% are from Ireland if not born in the U.S. I found the following on the surname:

A Surname: Mcgrady
Recorded in the spellings of MacBrady, MacGrady, and O'Grady, the short forms commencing "Mc", and both Brady and Grady without any prefix, this is an Irish clan surname, originally from the County Cavan region. The dervation is from the pre 10th century Gaelic Mac Bradaigh, and the translation is "the son of the very spirited one" or similar, this description being that applied to the first chief of the clan. How many centuries ago this was is very uncertain, but most Irish surnames have at least medieval ancestry, and some stretch back to the very dawn of written history. At various times the nameholders have been called MacBrady and O'Grady, whilst since the 16th century both Brady and Grady have been most popular despite the famous song about Rosie O'Grady. It seems that about the time of King Henry V111 of England (1510 - 1547), certain clan members became protestant, and supported the monarchy. Whether this is true or not, the various prefixes of Mac, Mc or O, were largely dropped from the name, although there has been a 20th century revival in their use. Early nameholders of repute included Hugh Brady, the protestant Bishop of Meath who died in 1584, Fiachra MacBrady, a Gaelic poet living in the year 1710, and Michael Brady, who was prominent in the service of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and who died in the 1745 rebellion in Scotland. The first known nameholder may well be John O'Grady, Archbishop of Tuam, Ireland, from 1364 to 1372

Hello,
There is no place in England with the name Whiteleams/Whiteleaves etc. The name has probably been written by someone who was unfamiliar with the place. It may be a similar sounding name such as Whiteleas.

If you could post BOTH names of the people getting married we could look for them in the GRO marriage registration indexes and that would give a better idea of where this place was. You would also then be able to order a copy of the certificate which should tell you details such as the ages of the bride & groom at the time of their marriage and their father's names and occupations.

Regards,
Helen.

I have a feeling this topic is all clear as mud to all of you as it is to me, but I was wondering what anyone else has concluded on the McGrady name. Is it Irish, Scottish, Scots-Irish? And really, this is kind of a trick question as "Scottaie" essentially means THE IRISH. As you may/may not know the Scots came from Ireland. And many of them (the Scots-Irish) moved back to Ireland after being in Scotland.

It is my conclusion that the McGradys in my ancestral lineage must have been Scots-Irish. I can trace my lineage into the very early 1700's. Those McGradys also settled in the Appalacian Moutain region. As some of you may know many Scots-Irish settled in the Appalacians during this time period. They said, "screw this colony stuff lets go to the hills and work on our moonshine!" I have also known my ancestors to be of protestant beliefs. All these facts just don't seem to coincide with the typical Catholic-Irishmen.

Anyways, back to the question. Irish? Scottish? Scots-Irish? All the Above? No Idea?

I have to agree with your conclusions. I believe that the McGradys were Scotch-Irish. Barney McGrady (1793-????)appearently severed in the War of 1812. he settled in Upstate NY with his wife Irena(1799-????)and was farming there according to the 1840 census. His great-grandaughter (my grandmother) said that "great-gramma" stayed in Dublin when Barney came to the states. This confused my searches since his son, was also named Barney McGrady (1845-????), ande I had assumed that Barney came over in the 1960s thinking of the wrong Barney). It has intreged me that it seems tha Barney's or son James McGrady migrated to northern Illinois about 140 miles west of Chicago. What is strange is is that Sterling was about half Germans (a mixture of Lutheran and Catholics), and half Catholic Irishmen (from the names mostly from Counties Cork and Limeric). My grandmother was "protestant" until she married my French grandfather. Just seems strange that they moved to a largely Catholic Irish community.

Most of our oral history has been lost, so I don't really have a clue.

Unfortunately, the English marriage records usually only list the name of the father, and the place of residence at the time. If they were under the age of consent, it will be stated, but it does not give their actual age. But at least with the name of the father (and their occupations), you should be able to move forward. Remember that as well as the civil registrations, you should also try and obtain the church record which may contain more information; the Catholics were/are very good recordkeepers. The civil registration should tell you where they were married, so you can go about finding the church record.
You can obtain copies of the actual registrations (with all of the recorded details) for a fee, through the General Record Office in England. An easy search and order service is available through findmypast.com

In the Free BMD index, if you click "see others on this page", you will get a list of the other people appearing on the same registration page -- one of them will be the spouse, and the other two will be another couple.

Clear as mud?
This must have come from a baptismal record, as I cannot find the civil registration. It looks more like Whiteburn to me, but I have found some more clues.

Leo John's death record:

Leo John McGrady, of 395 Hillsdale Ave., Toronto, died 26 May 1920, aged 40 years, b. Toronto, occupation given as a clothes presser; married, son of John McGrady, b. Ireland, and Catherine Keeler, b. England; informant was Frances McGrady, of same address, wife.

And their marriage:
Leo McGrady, aged 34, b. Toronto, of same, bachelor, presser, Catholic, son of John McGrady & Catherine Keeler, married Frances Graham, aged 27, b. Belleville, of same, widow, clerk, Catholic, daughter of Joseph Marden & Caroline Sardney; witnesses: James J. Keelor of Toronto, and Mary McCourt, of Belleville; married by me at Belleville, in the County of Hastings, 7 September 1914, by Chas. J. Killeen, Catholic clergyman, Belleville.

OK, and then I find the marriage of Catherine Keelor & John McGrady in the FreeBMD site in the quarter ending June 1871 in Whitehaven:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

The district Whitehaven spans the boundaries of the counties of Cumbria and Cumberland;

In the 1871 English Census, I find a Kate Keelor, a servant, single, aged 25, b. Whitehaven Cumberland, working in the home of Henry Taylor in St. Bees, Cumberland.

And also in Whitehaven in the 1871 Census:

McGrady, John, Head, single, aged 33, boot & shoe maker, b. Ireland
McGrady, Charles, Brother, single, aged 36, sailor, b. Ireland

Getting a copy of the marriage record should give you the names of John's & Catherine's fathers which should allow you to go further in your research.

1861 English Census
St. Bees, Whitehaven, Cumberland

Keeler, Michael, Head, married, aged 54, mariner (M.S.), b. Ireland
Keeler, Margaret, Wife, married, aged 54, b. Whitehaven
Keeler, John, son, single, aged 23, ???? (journeyman), b. Whitehaven
Keeler, Catherine, daughter, single, aged 19, servant, b. Whitehaven
Keeler, James, son, single, aged 14, servant, b. Whitehaven
Keeler, Margaret, daughter, aged 10, servant, b. Whitehaven

Glad I could be of help. When did Catherine (Victoria) die, as I find John McGrady as a widower in the 1911 census, and his death certificate in 1924, also says he was a widower. Your grandfather was seemingly born after those dates, so wonder how he knew his grandmother.

Her parents were John McGrady and Katherine/Catherine (I don't know her maiden name).

I know no one on this message board is researching them, but please just take a second and look it up in ancestry.com if possible.

What was Katherine/Catherine's maiden name?
I'm interested in finding out as much information about Robert McGrady as possible.

From what I've been able to gather,

1. He arrived in SC from Ireland 11/8/1820
2. He married Nancy Smith in 1826 Fairfield, SC
3. He relocated to Butts, GA by 1830
4. He was on the 1830 census for fairfield SC
5. He relocated to Butts, GA by 1840
6. He was on the 1840 census for Butts GA
7. He has court documentation in Pikes county Ala dating as early as 2/1850 yet
8. He was on the 1850 census for Butts, GA dated 9/1850
9. His daughter Nancy McGrady marries John smith 7/18/1852

My questions are as follows

1. How did he end up in Fairfield SC by 1830
2. Why did he migrate to Butts, GA by 1840
3. Why did he migrate to Pike, Alabama by 1850

I'm VERY interested in discoveries answers to these questions.

Also, I will be taking a treck to the Butts County are the week after thanksgiving. If anyone researching Robert McGrady would like for me to look for specific information, please let me know as my time will be very limited there. (only 2 days and they're office closes by 5pm)

Also, if you have ANY specific places I should be visiting there, please let me know

Delbra

on the Canada Birth Records, there is a record for my great, great uncle: Leo John McGrady.

I am very excited with this find, I now know his mother's (my great great grandmother's) maiden name.

The record lists the place of marriage for Leo's parents as somewhere in England. This is the first time I have traced ancestry in the British isles recent enough to find information in census records. It looks something like Whiteleams. It states the place of marriage is also located in the county of York, possibly meaning Yorkshire?

Please visit http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1429/albertjp3.jpg to see the picture of the place name in this document.

When you are there, simply jump onto one of the close up page views and go to page 553. Can you identify where Leo's parents had their wedding?

I have found the census records out of Canada much more useful than the American ones I am accustomed to. The censuses have exact birth dates, religion, and more.

Thank you

M.
Hello,

How do you suggest I find a marriage record for them? In the BMD index, it doesn't even seem to list two people in a marriage record. The BMD index just seems to say the quarter and year they registered the marriage in, and their names.

How would finding the right one of these help me find john and Catherine McGrady's parents?

Do you have any tips? I am very inexperienced in genealogy. Though I have been doing it for a long time, practically all my family lines have been traces, documented, and studied extensively. He had many pictures of her, heard many stories about her, and still to this day refers to her as "that wonderful woman."

Being that my grandfather's mother was allegedly almost identical in manor to her mother, my grandfather loves her from the grave accordingly.

I made an error when I stated they were very close, this is because it seemed as if he knew her. He loves talking about his grandmother. He says she was called Victoria because she was a product of the Victorian era.

Thank you so much, your help has been wonderful.

As I have been searching, I have found Catherines Keeler's siblings have Civil Birth Registrations. Strange how genealogy works, I study it for around a year and then I look back at something I already saw before but didn't look carefully enough at and exclaim "Oh, that's the answer!"

That is how it worked for me, finding Catherine's surname. Luckily, Catherine's son Leo McGrady's middle name was John. Because of this, when I searched for information regarding his father in Canadian records, I accidentally found Leo's death certificate which gave his mother's maiden name.

Again, thank you so much

You have been most helpful

M.
Need help identifying place name in document

on the Canada Birth Records, there is a record for my great, great uncle: Leo John McGrady.

I am very excited with this find, I now know his mother's (my great great grandmother's) maiden name.

The record lists the place of marriage for Leo's parents as somewhere in England. It looks something like Whiteleams.

The record are located at

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8838&p...=

when you are there, simply jump onto one of the close up page views and go to page 553. Can you identify where Leo's parents had their wedding?

Thank you

M. Yoder
(PS - please do not email me regarding this, only post on this forum if you wish to help)

Oh my goodness thank you!

I expected good answers but this is ridiculous.

Thank you for going to so much trouble, this is so exciting for me. These are my most recent British roots.

Your post comes as an extreme help, you seem very expert in the field of genealogy.

I am so excited I can barely type.

Katherine is the direct maternal ancestor of my 82 year old grandfather who is still alive. He will be very pleased, he loved his grandmother (who was commonly called Victoria).
