I replied via the Park line but my G Grandfather (born 12 Jul 1839)was the son of William McGrath b c 1800 Ireland and Bridget Culley (married 25 Apr 1838 in NY).
My G Grandfather wrote a Memo in 1886 that gave his family details. William died 22 Nov 1844 and was buried at 1st Ave 11th St NY. Bridget married again to Bernard Quirk and they had a daughter Mary Quirk in 1849. She married Michael Coleman. As at the 1910 Census she had 5 children alive. The 1840 census has William McGrath and John McGrath next to each other 11th Ward New York. I am very keen to link up with descendents of this family

William, thanks for your query. I have no knowledge of your gr.gr. grandparents, but it is likely that they were related to our McGraths, coming from the same two towns (Tuamgraney and Scarriff). I'm going to Europe for 3 months next April, and plan to do some research when I get to Ireland. If I find out anything beforehand or while there, I'll keep you informed.
Noel Caine

He was born June 30, 1913 and passed April 23, 1988. Anyone with any information about my grandfather will be so greatly appreciated. His father, my ggrandfather's name was Thomas L. McGrath whom married Catherine Herbert. Hope that helps someone out there that could be related to me. Thank you for your time.

John McGrath born c1840 Waterford Ireland

Hello, I am new to this board.
My James Mcgrath married a Margaret Fleming in Ferrybank Parish Waterford in 1860.From this union came 7 children. John then met a Mary Fleming from the same address as Margaret ( could just be a coincedence)and from this union came another 7 children for definite ( but there was probably at least 2 more). The latter couple were not married in the parish, but 7 of the children were baptised there. Does anyone on this board recognize these McGrath/ Flemings? If so I would be delighted to exchange information.

In anticipation

Catherine

Hi Noel,

My great grandfather was William McGrath from Scarriff in Clare. He was born in 1850. His father was William McGrath and his mother was Ellen Hertnedy(or similar spelling). Something seems to have happened to William (death/transportation?)because Ellen married a Mr Coffey in 1855. Ellen's tombstone is in Tuamgraney cemetery - it was erected by William and he is mentioned on it.
He came out to Queensland around 1880 and lived at Muttaburra. He owned/managed a hotel in Muttaburra with Michael McGrath on the Aramac Road.
He later owned hotels in Mount Morgan (The Leichhardt) and Rockhampton (The Scarriff and others). He died around 1920.
He married Elizabeth Noonan of Mitchelstown,Cork in Muttaburra.
They had a large family in Australia.
Are our McGrath's related? I was wondering if Michael was William's brother or cousin or something. I have not explanation why a young Irish man would leave Ireland to live in Muttaburra.
Yours

David Tonkin

We know that he was born in 1900, died in 1941, and his mothers name was Nellie McGrath Morse, who was born in 1879. We don't know his fathers name or when he and our grandmother, Blanche Doherty, were married.

Hi,
It is so nice of you to reply when you really aren't sure if people use the boards. Although I have fooled around with some seriousness on family history since the late 1970's after I was hired by a forensic genealogist to "find the missing heir" it is only in the last two years that I have joined Ancestry.com. The information they have is amazing but also and possibly because they support the message boards at RootsWeb.com and genealogy.com. I have found amazing information on message boards which also include the usgenweb boards which I imagine Ancestry.com also supports. The genweb boards also have an international division.

I will get back to you with the little I have on Annie Parks McGrath, the sister of Mary Parks Copps. [Mary and Robt. Copps had a large family. One son was Victor Kennedy Copps b 1919 ("Vic had several bros Lee, Ed and others" quote from a Canadian cousin.) One of Victor's children is
Sheila Copps who is a Canadian journalist and former deputy Prime Minister of Canada.]

I made contact with Annie McGrath's great nephew, the grandson of Melissa Parks Power on the Power message board. He and his two sisters plus spouses then rode their NEW Harleys from Timmins and Iroquois Falls ON to Milwaukee (the home of Harley) to visit me and my family... a highlight of my life. The only reason I had those names Power, Copps and McGrath was that the people on the ON message board gave me amazing information.

But right this minute I just could not miss the chance to let you know that your time is well spent checking out and sharing with message boards. You meet the nicest, most generous people. You will fit in beautifully.

Thanks so much for your reply.
Mary Quirk-Thompson
This is my Great Great Grandmother. She was born in Ireland around 1841 and came to the US somewhere around 1851 to 1853 through Philadelphia. Her brothers who worked in or owned a store called McGrath's in Phil. brought her in to work as a house servent. She met and married William Cahill in 1860. They moved to Wrightsvill, York county Pa. sometime after 1864. They had 5 Living children and triplets who died. Thier living children were: Mary Agnes Cahill, Nora Cahill, William Cahill, Edward H. Cahill, and James Cahill. August was the longest serviving triplet but he died as an infant. Anna died in 1929 in Harrisburg. I don't know anything about her time in Phil. and her migration here. Can anyone help me trace her tracks from Phil. back to Ireland?

Correction to the above post. Patrick's wife name is Victoria Young, not Virginia Young. My error.

Some additional information has come to light since our original post. Both Patrick and Virginia were from County Waterford, Ireland. Virginia’s maiden name was Young. It appears that they were married shortly before they left Ireland for the US. They settled in San Francisco, living on 19th Street. Virginia was born Jan 1859 and died July 25, 1901. Patrick was born May 1836 and died December 14, 1901. Both are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA. After their death, daughter Ellen (Nellie) became head of the family.
