Charlene:
I know very little about Kenneth, other than he was my grandfather, Colin McGuire's brother. Colin died a year after I was born so I did not know him either. However, I can give you the info I have. Their parents were Daniel McGuire and Catherine Calder, married in Edinburgh in 1856. Daniel's father was also Daniel and he married Agnes Shillinglaw in Peebles. James Calder from Inverness married Agnes's sister, Janet, so Daniel and Catherine were second cousins.
The scottish sites have all of this info in their censes.
Daniel immigrated and they show up in Boston in the 1870 census. Calder was in all of the children's names. I traced the original Daniel to his birth in 1797 in Peebles, but there is no trace of him or his parents prior to that date.
II feel that the McGuire's probably came from Ireland and that could explain the lack of records. There was a lot of immigration from Ireland to Scotland for work. Both Daniels were stonemasons. Peebles was also full of Irish immigrants.
However, the Shillinglaw line is quite interesting. I have traced it back to the Stewart line in Renfrew, the royal Stewart clan home.
My grandfather moved to D.C. and then to Maryland around the turn of the century. There were 5 children-Alice, John, James{Pat}, Charles{Franny} and Joseph. The are all gone. My father was Pat and he would have been your father's first cousin. You can reply to me regular e-mail. It will be easier
Terry McGuire
ta_mcguire@comcast.net

Hi, I am so glad to hear from you. I didn't think I would ever learn anything about James Kenneth Calder McGuire. I know little about him except he was my dad's father and my grandmother left him when my dad was about 4 years old. My father tried to locate him when we were kids but had no luck. Can you tell me what you know. I always thought that he was born in Mass. cause that's what my dad's birth certificate said - I am interested in anything you can tell me. And thank you so much for contacting me. I haven't been on Ancestry for a while - but they sent me your email and I renewed my subscription so I could contact you. Hoping to hear from you soon - and thank you again.
Charlene

This will probably not get to you since the post is old. My grandfather's brother was names James Kenneth Calder McGuire. He was born in West Lothian, Scotland in 1859. My grandfather was born in 1871 in Mass after they emigrated. The parents were Daniel McGuire and Catherine Calder.

FWIW, I have a 1C5R Solomon McGuire who married Susanna Garrett, 1812 Floyd, KY. Solomon died in Edgar IL., but several of his sons went west to Walla Walla Washington Territory by wagon train around 1862 (Kennedy Company out of Iowa). Solomon was a son of Rev. Cornelius McGuire and Esther Stratton who settled in Floyd KY ca 1795 after eastern KY was made safer following the Battle of Fallen Timbers 1794.

At the present time I do not show a Solomon McGuire in my tree. If I had some more info on him, such as his complete name, DOB & where, marriage, descendants/ascendants, where resided, DOD & where, I may have something on him and not realize it. I have about 500 or so McGuire's in my tree.
Thanks, Lynn

EN McGuire m. WR Hill, d/o JL McGuire & Britta Ann Green

Here are the notes I have on William Hill and Ellen Nora McGuire.

To date I have found no primary documents that list WRH as a son of Alexander Hill and Cynthia Randall Bush. On the other hand, they are absolutely in the right places at the right times with the right people. I haven't found out their relationship to the Holsembacks yet, either, but there is definitely a relationship, probably familial.

I first found the info on the Hills on Genserv.com in 2004 as posted by the contact given. So far I've found nothing to disprove it.

I'll contact you via email shortly with answers to your other questions.

Enjoy!

1 Alexander HILL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth: about 1802, TN

1. It looks as though in the 1830 Census for AL, the younger Alexander Hill is living with John Hill, Sr in Bibb County. There is another Alexander Hill, but he is too old, and John Hill is living near Alexander Hill in the 1840 and 1850 Censi.

2. In the 1840 US Census for AL, Alexander Hill is in Talledega County, AL. In the household are two males 0 - 5, one male 20 - 30 (Alexander), and one female 20 - 30 (Cynthia). Neighbors include John Hill.

2a. Notes from County Court Minutes 1841

Compiled in July 1993 and submitted by Jacquelyn Cox Otts
I hope these notes will provide clues as to the location of these people during this period of time. I have attempted to keep the spelling of the names as I saw them in the records.

"William F. Hodges, use of Presley A. Berry, vs Alexander Hill - p. 99-100
Jury: Eza Taylor and 11 others. Plaintiff to recover $60.53 and costs incurred from Alexander Hill and Enoch Carson, his security."

http://bibbcountyal.org/court/1841minutes.htm

3. In the 1850 US Census for AL, Alexander Hill is 38, a farmer, born TN, can read and write. Also in the household are Cyntha, 31, born GA, Margaret, 13, born AL, Malvina, 9, Martha, 7, Mary, 2. If Willliam Randall's birthdate on the gravestone is correct, he should show here as 1, but he doesn't. So his mother is VERY pregnant. Neighbors are many Hill families.

4. In the 1860 US Census for AL, Randall Hill is 10, living with Alex and Cyntha, born AL, attended school in the past year. Alex is a farmer, $1000, $400. Also in the household are Margaret, 22, Mary, 12, Ira, 5, George 3, and Thomas, 1. Neighbors are Hiram Hays, Pearson & Smith.

5. In the 1870 US Census for AL, Alex Hill is living near the Brierfield P.O. in Randolph, Bibb County. He is 61, works as a "B furnace laborer. Has personal estate of $800, born TN. Also in the household are Cinthia, 58, born GA, Mary, 22, Ira, 14, and George, 12, and Lewis Dunkirk, 35, a boarder. They live between Britta Flynn, the McKinneys, and Newton & Fannie Smith.

6. In the 1880 US Census for AL, Alexander Hill is living with James Holesomeback in Beat # 6. P.O. Beats 5 & 6 & 7, Tyler, Helena, & Elliottsville. He is 68, a farmer, born TN, father born TN, mother born GA. Also in the household is wife Cintha, 64, born AL, parents born TN; Cintha Lufane, grandchild, (Dupree?), born AL, father born AL, mother born TN. They are in the household of James, 46, born AL, parents born SC, Julia, 39, born SC, parents born SC, Laura, 18, born AL, Annie C., born AL. They are in the same town as William & Ellen McGuire Hill and Mike and Briita Green McGuire Flynn.

Spouse: Cynthia Randall BUSH
Birth: about 1806, GA
Marriage: 9 March 1836, Talledega, AL

Children: George W(ashington?) HILL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth: bet 1835 & 1840

1. In the 1850 US Census for AL, George W. Hill, 12, born AL, is living with John Hill, 50, a farmer. They live near Alexander Hill. In 1840 Alex Hill had two boys under 5. Is this one of them?

1.2 Unk HILL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth: 1835 & 1840

1.3 Margaret HILL
--------------------------------------------------

1.4 Malvina HILL
--------------------------------------------------

Spouse: Hiram HAYS

1.5 Mary HILL
--------------------------------------------------

1.6 William Randall HILL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth: 15 June 1850, AL
Death: 8 April 1905, AL
Burial: Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Birmingham, AL

Machinist

1. In the 1850 US Census for AL, Alexander Hill is 38, a farmer, born TN, can read and write. Also in the household are Cyntha, 31, born GA, Margaret, 13, born AL, Malvina, 9, Martha, 7, Mary, 2. Also in the household are Margaret, 22, Mary, 12, Ira, 5, George 3, and Thomas, 1. Neighbors are Hiram Hays, Pearson & Smith.

3. Not in his parents' (?) household in 1870. It looks like he is living in Centreville, Bibb County, with an aunt, maybe--he is 21, a farmer, born AL. The woman is Catherine Hill, 45, born NC.

4. In the 1880 US Census for AL, Renelle Hall is 21, a farmer, in Shelby County. Born AL, parents born AL. Also in the household are Ellennorh, 25, George, 8, Ida, 5, Walter, 4, and Willie, 1. Buried in the same lot as B.A. Flynn, Ellen Hill, and Minnie Drucilla. His monument has a message that he worked hard to support them all and was taken too soon.

7. While in AL in April 2007 I looked for marriage for Hill & McGuire in Bibb County. Couldn't find it. Couldn't find it in Shelby or Jeff Co. either.

Spouse: Ellen Nora McGUIRE
Birth: 4 May 1857
Death: 24 April 1904, Jefferson County, AL
Father: John L.

Of course there was a Lt. James McGuire who was killed at Blue Licks after the British and Shawnee cut off their siege of Bryant's Station in 1782.

And there was a William McGuire who was captured with his family at Martin's Station in 1780, and held in Quebec until after the war.

Note also that James and Wm were related to one another.

I can't help but suspect that this Samuel born at Bryant's Station is related to these early KY McGuire men.

But there is "No such uncertainty as a sure thing."
Nancy or Ann Who?

In the 1914 obituary for Samuel Wallace McGuire, born Oct. 27, 1826, at West Liberty, Kentucky, it was written: that he was the “son of Samuel McGuire and Jeannette Ferguson, both of whom were born in Bryant’s Station, Kentucky. He was grand-nephew of Robert Burns the Scottish poet”.

Disregarding for the time being, the yet unproven (to my knowledge) place of birth mentioned above for SW, there is still much discussion, that will likely never have a well documented outcome, as to whether the maiden name of his grandmother, Ann or Nancy who married the RW pensioner John McGuire born 1756 in Ireland, was BURNS, HOLDER, HOLDEN or another name that has never made print or the internet.

Given that Burns, the poet, lived from 1759 to 1796 I would entertain theories for the Burns connection. Even a good solid theory for a Burns not related as stated would be a good thing. Another possible outcome, which would do nothing to advance the cause of naming Nancy, is that the relationship could have been on his mother’s side.

Strong arguments for any other maiden names for Ann or Nancy will also be entertained. Anyone mentioning “Eric Passmore White” or “Harlan Brown” need only supply the documentation that accompanies their works to be in the final running for the grand prize.
He does not appear to be their child. I haven't been able to connect him with any other McGuires related to Jermemiah. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi -- I'm afraid I don't know much about the Ferguson line, only that Theresa McGuire Ferguson was my grandfather Harold McGuire's older sister. You must be the child of Bob, Betty, or Bill Jr., who are my mother Rosemary McGuire O'Brien's first cousins, which means we'd be second cousins.

Again, I'm sorry I don't have any info on the Ferguson line.

Take care,

Jamie O'Brien

They had many children and among them my husband's gg-grandmother Harriet Emeline McGuire {Curbow}.

Harold,
Per yDNA results from multiple living descendants of each, John McGuire (1756-1837, Morgan Co. Ky), Lt. James McGuire (c1735-1782, Blue Licks Ky Battle), and Col. John McGuire (c1750-1807, Winchester, Fayette Co. Ky) were not related to one other. John McGuire (1766-c1845, Greenup Co. Ky) was the eldest son of Lt. James McGuire. The maiden name of Nancy McGuire, wife of John (1756-1837) is unknown, but possible Nancy Burns. The Nancy Holden speculation originated from Harlan Brown's Genealogy of John (1756-1837). Harlan Brown apparently confused Col. John McGuire's 2nd wife, whose last name was Holder, with the wife of John McGuire(1756-1837). Ruth Moran agrees with all of the above.

Pat Meguire
McGuire DNA Project

I am searching for information about the parents of my GG Grandfather, James Joseph (JJ) McGuire, born in Webster County, Georgia in 1850. He married Eugenia Bell in December 1869 in Randolph County, Georgia.

I believe JJ's family is the Thomas McGuire family listed in Marion County, Georgia in the 1850 census. JJ is not listed because he was not quite born yet. HOH listed is Thomas McGuire, born in Massachusetts in 1805. Thomas' wife is listed as Juritha McGuire, born South Carolina in 1816. The children of Thomas and Juritha (sp. Juretha in subsequent enumerations) are Mary, Charlotte, Francis (I believe is Louisa Francis), William - all born in the 1830s - and John T., born in 1849.

If anyone has any information on this family, it would be greatly appreciated - even if my assumption that James Joseph is part of this family turns out to be incorrect.

Thanks,

Steve

Great-grandfather Robert McGuire married to Jane Crockett. Robert's father was Guss, Sr. (Samuel Augustus). Guss's mother was Peggy McGuire. Can find no marriage info for her. Perhaps she had Guss and was unmarried?
Also seeking info for Jane's ancestors. Her father was Robert Crockett, mother Elizabeth Doughton. Who was Robert Crockett's father? Related to "Big" John Crockett in Cranebrake. Robert was married again to Anna Poe.

I knew of the divorce, but never heard of a reason why. It does sound possible. Evison stayed in Union, Nodaway County, MO until at least 1910. Do you happen to know when he died? I am assuming it was before 1920, since his second wife, Elizabeth, died in 1949 and buried at Johnson Cemetery, near Clearmont, Nodaway County, MO.

Hi! I'm granddaughter of Theresa McGuire Ferguson. Wondering if you've come across any Ferguson info? I think my great grandparents were Thomas Ferguson and Catherine Lynott of Scranton. Also, that William (Bill) was youngest of many children. Haven't found any connections yet. Thanks for all of the work on the McGuire side though. Very helpful.
