Paul

I have just found your message about the McHaffie family in N Ireland. My husband's mother was Kathleen McHaffie b 1908 daughter of Hugh Alexander McHaffie, who was born in Paisley in 1870 and married Margaret Barry/ie in 1896. His parents were Peter and Isabella McHaffie. Peter was born near Stranraer in 1844. Hugh remarried in 1920 Kathleen Johnston after Margaret died in 1914

Kathleen McHaffie had a brother Hugh b about 1905 who married Annie Hamilton. I believe Hugh died abt 1955. I have that Hugh had sons Bobby and Gerard and daughter Joan. We have just traced Peter and Isabella's grave in the City Cemetery in Belfast their daughter in law Margaret McHaffie is buried with them.

Peter b 1844 had a son Peter who like his father was a gardener. Peter, senior who died 1902 was a gardener in Netherleigh in Knock

Are these people connected to you. As you say it is an unusual name and there are not many in N Ireland.

I look forward to a reply

Mary Robinson

Peter McHaffie, born about 1821, in Scotland,is enumerated in Hamilton, Ontario, on the 1861 census with his second wife, Agnes. Two of Peter's children from his first marriage to Catherine Thompson are listed, along with two children from Peter's second marriage to Agnes. The marriage date for Peter and Agnes is stated to be 1856, but I have not found a record of the marriage in Wentworth County. Also listed on this census is Jane Kelly and Mary Ellis. Peter has commented that Jane is a "near relative", but Mary is a nursing baby, not connected to the family. If you examine the 1851 census of Scotland, it has Jane/Jean Kelly as Peter's Mother-in-law. The two older McHaffie brothers, John and Robert, remained in Hamilton for some time, while the younger ones appear to have moved to Simcoe County shortly after that 1861 census. Agnes McHaffie's death registration records her name as Agnes Roy McHaffie.

Hi
I'm Sheila's Daddy's cousin. For years I've been compiling on all McHaffies and descendants. All I found for you was that Jane McHaffie born circa 1767 Wigtownshire, Scotland, married John McDowall, and my note that I found most of the marriages in my list at www.familysearch.org (and it would have been at least 5 or more years since I found it). I do know that McHaffies and McDowalls (the s.w. Scotland form of McDougall, an ancient family of around beautiful Oban, Scotland, further north, which I have seen) are found in some mid-13th century English records as owning galleys (together). The person who did the research died of tuberculosis in the hospital in Scotland, 1949, and didn't have his notes available. He (Archibald Buchanan Low) did marvelous research which led to my extensive research on McHaffies and kin, and also an attempt to try to determine if we link to McDhubhshith (most all the letters are silent!) and MacPhie, etc. www.mcduffiedna.com might be of interest to you I've written a book on Covenanter Presbyterians that grew out of the research on my banished McHaffie (of Wigtownshire, Oct 1684, in Register of the Privy Council of Scotland records). A top researcher in Scotland wanted the material and in exchange did some research on McHaffies for me: 1500s, McIlhaffy, McYlhaffy; McIlhaffie, McHaffie, Mahaffie found 1684 Wigtownshire; 22 May 1416, Whithorn Church (Casa Candida, isle by tip of Wigtownshire peninsula, the oldest stone church in Scotland, dates to cir 432 A.D. and St Ninian, ruins excavated) the prior there was Thomas Makillehochufy, appointed papal chaplain to the anti-pope, Benedict XIII, of Avignon, France. The Scottish records are terrific, and there are lots of them here at Rootsweb, more lists etc. than I've had time to look at. one at freepages has the 1684 parish list, Wigtownshire. hope this helps. The McDougalls as I recall were able to hold their family castle, Dunollie, at Oban, for many many centuries I have read.

Hi
We still aren't sure how Guyan McHaffie (he has descendants pronouncing it Mehaffie) of 1750s Pennsylvania (in many records, sometimes as Mehaffie, and as Guian, Guion etc) relates to my banished McHaffie ancestor of Wigtownshire (banished Oct 1684). John McHaffie living in Arizona has done tremendous amount of work on Guyan and descendants and has wondered about the given name Guyan. The fact that your father's surname was Guyan, changed to Johnstone, makes me think there must be the surname Guyan in the British Isles. There was a Madame Guyonne (or similar) who was a couple of centuries ago, in France, a religious lady mentioned in more than one source as I recall. I've wondered if perhaps Guyan could be name of fugitive Huguenots of 16th century who went to Northern Ireland. Wish I could help more on Guyan family.

Hi
I've been compiling info on McHaffies for over 20 years and lots of the charts are here at WorldConnect Rootsweb. In addition to the charts, I've compiled all I could find on Covenanter Presbyterians (my ancestor is John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire Scotland, banished, of family tradition and in David Dobson's books) who refused in 17th c. to comply with the royal decrees regarding religion. Many were executed, many were banished to life servitude in America on plantations. It has become a huge book. If you will give me a chart starting with your earliest McHaffie grandparent, (with spouse, and names of children with birth date, place) I will add them to the charts here at WorldConnect Rootsweb (though the living will show without first names, dates etc) and will see if I can locate (in the charts) your parent, grandparent.

New Macfie e-mail list

We have just created a new e-mail list which we hope will include Macfies of all spellings and from all societies. I know that many of us are really stuck with our particular branch of the family tree, and since some of the name spellings are so similar, we might have relatives that we are not even aware of with their name spelled just a little bit differently than ours. I am not sure how much mail this new list will generate (if any) but thought we would give it a try, and am inviting you to join. You can join from the web site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macfieclan or just send a message to macfieclan-subscribe@yahoogroups.com once you are on, you can post a message and it will go to all the other list members at macfieclan@yahoogroups.com Come join us and share your genealogy and history knowledge with others. As soon as you join, send a message to let others know you are on line.

Jim and Ginger McAfee
Macfie Clan Society of America
www.macfiesocietyofamerica.com

Hi Stephen
I would like to add your grandmother Sarah Sadie and her siblings Mary, Hugh, Frank Frankie to my database which can be seen at //wc.rootsweb.com and also at www.gencircles.com I have been compiling all McHaffies for about 18 years, and have a list of marriages for Scotland and one for America could you give me the name of your grandmother's spouse, and their offspring (and whether the individuals could be living) also do you know who Mary married? I have a large file on McHaffie Name which you might find interesting, and which I could send to you as a text file. Several of the Glasgow McHaffies have roots in Stranraer in Wigtownshire My ancestor was banished from Scotland according to tradition, and emigration expert David Dobson of Scotland in his many published books has helped me to find him John McHaffie in Gargerie was banished at Wigtown 17 Oct 1684 during the time when presbyterianism was outlawed and many were killed, banished His house was pulled down by the sheriff, and a nice Scot went to the trouble to go to the site, take photos of the foundation, and some of the stones of the house, which have been used in the wall along the road The rootsweb site has about 400,000,000 linked people, though many are duplicates, and hopefully posting your grandmother and her siblings would eventually get us some help

Ester/Esther and McLaughlin can be found in // wc. rootsweb.com click on Advanced Search or on down to database box and type in mchaffie
I have several thousand family groups with McHaffies in them Jesse M. __________ (name slips my mind) lived in or near Beaver Co PA and allowed me to incorporate some of his work into my gedcom on McHaffies and my book Covenanter Martyrs and Transportees: An Annotated Index of People, Places and Events in Scotland and America c. 1992, 1998, 2001, 2004
Probably Esther descends from Guyan McHaffie of PA, found as early as 1740, possibly from Northern Ireland
My own group descends from another person, John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland (very s.w. corner of Scotland) John was banished on 17 Oct 1684 at Wigtown Jail by John Graham of Claverhouse and others, and forced to walk to Edinburgh where he was put in Canongate Prison.

Alexander died in 1899 and Ellen married Samp Richardson. They are in the 1900 census for Christian County, MO. Pete died in 1965. Does anyone know who his father was?
Dear Alan--I am your Father's first cousin--Josephine McDonald (Jo). I have quite a bit of info. about your heritage and perhaps the next time I am in Saskatoon visiting your Grandmother, we can get together over a coffee. I can tell you that the first McHaffie that arrived in Canada (Your Dad's and mine great grandfather) was Peter McHaffie. He was born in Kirkbrightshire , Scotland in 1821. Settled in Simcoe County, Ontario in 1862. Was married twice. Our Great-Grandmother (your G.G Grandmother) was Agnes Paterson--connected to William Paterson, founder of the Bank of England! Can supply other McHaffie cousins names (your Dad's cousins) and their offspring.
