Christvdir-
Title of the book is:
Nichols-McHargue-Loveland and Allied Familes in America by
Arthur Clark Nichols II and Evelyn (Swanson) Nichols
Library of Congress Catolog Card # 77-70544
Issue 4 Jan 1977 Van Rooy Printing Co.,Appleton,Wisconsin

Are you the son of Katherine? I see that Anna and Roscoe had issue of 5 children. Anna was the 11th child born to James and Nancy(Taylor) McHargue. James was the 1st son of Andrew and Arthersia(Ward) McHargue. Andrew was the 1st son of Samuel and Mary(Ferguson) McHargue, Samuel was the 5th son of William and Sarah(McBroom) McHargue and William I was the 3rd son of Alexander I. A lot of this information is from William and Sarah's Family Bible on record in the National Archives in Washington D.C. So there you go cousin. I can't believe it has been 9 years since I last looked at this site! I only looked because one of our grandkids asked about family history the other day. My husband and I moved a year and a half ago and I can't find any of my geneology. The whole breifcase is lost! Or maybe it's me. I AM BECOMING MY MOTHER!!! Yikes.

William F. McHargue & Lydia are buried in the Salem Cem., Mercer Co., MO. They had at least four children. I have the names of those four, their spouses, and their offspring which might be helpful to you in finding their descendants. William's father, John (1814-1881)and his second wife, Elizabeth Owen, are also buried in the Salem Cem. John and Elizabeth had twelve children. Did John and his first wife, Eliza Smith, have more than children than William F.?

Thanks!
-Judy

It is held annually at Levi Jackson State Park, near London, KY. with a picnic on the 2nd Sat. of Aug at the park. Many people go to the McHargue church on Sun morning.
Re: Alexander MCHARGUE (MCHARG) b. 1715 Scotland d. abt 1789 PA

I'm really interested in what you have found and wonder if you could tell me your sources? I have seen on the internet that Alexander is buried in Beaver, Green County, Pa. Do you know where that information comes from? His son Alexander, jr. is buried in Paxton Presbyterian Church cemetery in Dauphin County where Alexander lived. Also, Alexander, Jr.'s daughter (not his sister), Margaret is buried there, I believe. What would have caused Alexander to be buried in Beaver? Is there a tombstone? I have a copy of Alexander's will which was proven in April, 1789 in Dauphin County, PA. so it seems unlikely that he would have buried somewhere other than in Dauphin County.

Another distant cousin communicated with a McHarg woman in Scotland who told her that the Alexander born to Alexander and Janet McKinna of Wigtownshire, died and was buried in Scotland. We were so disappointed to hear that because we were so sure he was the right one. There are many Alexander McHargs, we have found, in southwest Scotland.

The Graham story has proven to not be true. There is a McHargue DNA surname project you can read about at www.familytreedna.com/public/McHarg_McHargue. There have been several participants from John and William, Alexander's sons, and also a McHarg from Scotland. There is no genetic connection to the Grahams. In fact, these McHargues and the Scottish McHarg all descend genetically from the Ui Neills of 5th century northwest Ireland. The Ui Neills are descendents of Niall of the Nine Hostages, an early Irish chief or High King. That is a fascinating story!

Glynis McHargue Patterson

A book was published in 1938 by Barbara Sue McHargue in Kentucky. "History and Genealogy - The Family of McHargue in America" is sort of the base of information for all of us that are tracking down McHargue ancestors.

Although it is dangerous to assume, I think you are correct that this Nancy, daughter of James H, is the one who married James Hood. Nancy's brother, Stephen, is buried there as well as her sister Martha (incorrectly identified as wife of James, should be dau of James).

James McHargue (b.1805, d.1891) had Nancy by his 3rd wife Jane Martin. I think Nancy was actually born in KY, as James came to Indiana in about 1852. James was married first to Mary "Polly" Dugger (b.1808,d.1830) and had 2 children by her. James was then married to Phoebe Arnold and had 6 children by her. Then he married Jane Martin and had 7 more children by her. Quite a prolific man, I'd say.

James was the son of Alexander McHargue IV (b.18 Dec 1777, Iredell, NC - d.c.1808, Laurel, KY) and came to Kentucky in about 1805 from North Carolina with his father William McHargue I (b.5 Aug 1745, Lancaster, PA - d.7 Aug 1836, Laurel, KY). William was the 3rd son of Alexander McHarg/ue, who was the first in America. It was Alexander whom we think added the UE on the end of the Scots-Irish name McHarg.

Hope that helps.

Hi,
According to the christening records of Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland, I found that Alexander McHarg was christened in 1719. He was the son of Alexander and Janet McHarg of the same place. He migrated to PA sometime before 1745 where his son William's birth was recorded on 5 Aug 1745 and the spelling was changed to McHargue. He had two other sons, James br. abt. 1741 and John br. 1742 by his first wife who is unknown. He married Jane Holland 9 Jun 1760 who bore him another son Alexander br. abt. 1763 and a daughter Margaret br. abt. 1761. Alexander I in America died 1789 in Beaver, Green, PA. His sons James, John, and William migrated to Rowan Co., NC. James and John were buried there, but William migrated to Laurel County, Kentucky. Some of the descendents of John migrated to Green County, GA where a large branch of the McHargue family developed there. I descend from this branch and have a great deal of information on it. If you are interested in obtaining any of this information as well as some information on the Laurel County, Kentucky family, please contact me at dlo25928@aol.com. I am interested in obtaining information on the McHarg family prior to 1719. I have heard that the McHargue name came from the orginal name of Graham that was changed to avoid persecution.
Brenda

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I apologize for any mistake I may have made about the Mc Hargue family research. It sounds as though our resources have confused Alexander 1 and his son Alexander 2. Most of the information on my database came from a documentary of the McHargue Family by Mike Alford of Virginia. He contacted me about 18 years ago and listed the following resources:

Black, George. The Surnames of Scotland, Their Origin, Meaning and History. New York: the York Public Library, 1962, p. 508.

McHargue, Barbara Sue. History and Geneology of the Family of McHargue. Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1936.

McHargue, Daniel. article in the book entitled, Iredell County Heritage, pp.379-380.

He stated that some of his information may not have been proven. Since he stated that he had found information in PA records and in the Atlanta, GA archives, I assumed his resources were very reliable.

I am sad to hear that Alexander, son of Alexander McHarg and Janet McKinna, is not our ancestor. I found this information on familysearch.org, so I guessed it was our Alexander.

Thanks for informing me that the McHarg to Graham theory was not correct, so I don't do any further research on that family.

Please clarify if we are the ancestors of Ui Nells. If so, where can I find this information to read more about. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you,
Brenda
Please

I just wanted to update on the DNA project. We now have 11 participants; seven McHargues from Alexander's three oldest sons, a McHarg from Scotland, a McHarg from the US, a Meharg from Belfast and a Mac Harg from the US. All match according to the DNA. There seem to be, so far, two major branches of the clan, though more could emerge as more men take part in the project. There are no Graham connections showing up in any of these men. But they all descend from the ancient Ui Neills of northwest Ireland as proven by DNA. They are haplogroup R1b1c7 which is the Northwest Irish Modal.

We are interested in McIlhaggas and McIlhargeys participating as well as the variation of the McHarg name. Some Gaelic experts seem to think the McHarg name is a variation of these names. DNA can show us whether or not that is true.

www.familytreedna.com/public/McHarg_McHargue

McHargue family reunion

I am posting for my husband who has been researching his family tree. He is related to the McHargue family through his great-great-grandmother. We were wanting to know if there was to be a reunion as that we have heard there were reunions in the past. We would love to be able to come down to Corbin, KY to visit. His grandmother, Martha Kendall Wysocki was born in Corbin to Dowell Kendall and Roxie Hubbard. Hope anyone can help us out.
Thanks, Kathryn

Parthenia McHargue had a sister named Sarah who married Andrew Jackson Freeman. Looking for more information on where Pinkney's family stayed after he was killed in the Civil War.

My great grandmother was Parthenia McHargue who I have a picture of. Her father was William Pinkney McHargue and her husband was James Bryson Lindsey brother of William Riley. Their mothers were sisters so they married first cousins. Any additional information and contact would be appreciated. John Dickens
