Hi Kathleen,
I am also interested in the McHugh family, have not yet made a connection to John.
However, my McHugh's also were in Lowell, 1850, and came from Roscommon area. They were part of the Hunt, Brennan, and Malloy, and McDermott's to list a few families. Check out my McHugh family history, it is public at Ancestry.com.
Let me know if you see a connection, or have questions.
Pat
I am wondering if John had 2 brothers, Joseph and Thomas. Their parents were Dominic and Margaret Mchugh of Roscommon Ireland. The 2 boys were in Lynn and Lawrence around 1855 with relatives (Brennans and McDermotts) in Lowell.
They later settled in Providence RI and were both nightwatchmen.
Joseph born about 1827 married a Catherine ?
Thomas born about 1832 married Jane Hunt born in Boyle Parish, Roscommon
Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.

Hi Joan, You have probably seen this... 1911 Census Records for Edward McHugh's b Co.Donegal.
I went for the eldest Edward McHugh who lived in Faymore,Creeslough - there is another Edward in Killybegs.
Often the children's names are a clue to a particular line,
can you note them in order of birth?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?sur...

Probably 1810-1815, based on Edward's birth year. It appears that Edward, born April 1834. was the eldest or at least one of the older children. The birthdates for the other known children follow Edward by a number of years, so they must have been the youngest in the family. That's why I suspect that there were other McHugh chidren who came to the U.S., perhaps not to Luzerne County though.
Charles's obit from the Allentown newspaper in 1911 mentioned relatives in Scranton, Freeland, Wilkes Barre , Hazleton and Philadelphia. I know who the relatives were in Freeland and Wilkes Barre, but the others I have not connected into our family tree.
We also know from several newspaper articles that the Freeland McHughs (Edward's son, James F.) visited relatives in Virginia, and Edward himself took his family to the James River area of Virginia after the Civil War and did some farming on a plantation for several years.
I have been trying to connect with McHughs from that area with no luck.
Joan

Thanks for the contact! Sorry! I have come across parts of your family in research, but as of yet I can't connect with my family. The generation in Donegal was a John McHugh and Mary O'Donnell McHugh (informations coming from a death certificate from their son Charles in Allentown PA), but have not yet been able to make any connection in Donegal to find out other data regarding all of their children. That's my brick wall.
Known children of John/Mary McHugh: Edward, Luzerne County, died in Freeland; Mary McNally,(Mrs. John McNally) died in Allentown PA; and Mrs. James McNelis (or McNealis) in Donegal) and Charles, who lived for some time in Punxsutawny (Clayville) PA and died in Allentown.
Joan

Mary Griffin, children Patrick, John, Anthony, Annie, Michael, Francis,Joseph, and Edward. Some were coal miners. A few of Joseph's children were born in Freeland PA. Patrick is found in some years in Philadelphia with his Griffin cousins. If any of these names ring a bell, please respond :).

She and her four siblings lived with their grandmother Alice Conway McHugh following the divorce of her father, Frank J. from his first wife, Marion Manca. Sadly, my mother just died last week. She was 88 years old. If you would like more information about this branch of the family, feel free to contact me.

Searching, somewhat desparately, for my gg-grandparents. Bridget "Beezy" McHugh married, in Ireland abt 1860, Thomas Scanlon. Two known children, maybe more, Katherine T Scanlon and Winifred Scanlon. Katie born Oct 1874, Winnie born 1882. Both emigrated to the USA into Boston and settled in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Katie married, in 1892, my g-grandfather, Sidney Johnston MacDonell Vaughan. Lost track of Winnie after 1900. She came from Ballymote, through Queenstown to Boston on the ship Ivernia.

ANY information would be appreciated and reciprocated, if possible. All church records burned in Ballymote, Co Sligo, Ireland.

Thanks,
Mary
On the back is handwritten "J.B. Mchugh Ravia Okla."

I would like to unite this photo with the descendants. I did a little research and I believe this may be Joseph Braker McHugh who married Mattie Renfrow in Ravia in 1920.
Hi Pat, Happy to learn you have managed to find
Catherine McHugh's parents names.. a bonus..

I believe that Letterkenny Library hold numerous records
for Donegal citizens. Donegal Ancestry in Ramelton may also be able to assist, (A tad expensive though)
A trip to St.Mary's I think would be profitable
but you should contact the Parish Priest before your visit,
a small renumeration is expected for their time.
There is I believe a Records Office/Library in Lifford, have not been there, maybe worth contacting them to see what they hold.

www.familysearch.org have indexed B/M/D's for Ireland,
Go to top of page 'Records' drop down facility features Records Pilot Search.

I have utilised the Pilot Search for Marriages and Deaths in Philadelphia with some success.. I've not been as lucky
with the B/M/D's for Ireland.

The following link may pinpoint the Townland your Gallagher McHugh/McCue's hailed from..
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php

Proni (what NI Records are held) can be searched on this link www.proni.gov.uk

Wills/Probate and Calenders can be searched
here (http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/will_calen...)

Lindel's site offers more indepth info.

Have a great trip (ps I will be there in May) looking forward to finding some more relations..

Cheers
Anne - Edinburgh - Bonnie Scotland

Re: Eugene Owen McHugh

Arlene, I think there is a strong possibility that your
Eugene Owen McHugh is related to our family. My paternal grandmother Mary Ann McHugh Noud was born in Kildare County, Ireland. One of her brothers was Patrick McHugh. Both emigrated to America settling in Pennsylvania where they worked for Bethlehem Steel Mills. Patrick McHugh and Margaret Nolan McHugh had several children, but most died young. One daughter Mary Anne married Eugene Owen McCarty. Both Owen and Mary Ann died young and were originally interred in St. Michael's Cemetery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I think it is possible that the one son of Mary Anne and Ownen (he went by Owen rather than Eugene Owen) might have named his son after Eugene Owen. I have some history and have access to further contacts. I just recently came into some of the McHugh history. I have known for some time that Patrick McHugh was killed at work in the steel mill. Holy Infancy Church in South Bethlehem has been very helpful in putting names together. The McHughs are connected to the Lennox and McAvoy families also. I you think we could pursue this further, feel free to contact me. We live in New Brighton, Minnesota. The address is 1690 Silver Lake Road NW, New Brighton, MN 55112
Thomas Noud
651.633.8006
tjnoud@ties2.net

Hi,
I'm sure we're related - really sure! And I hope that you still are checking here. My grandmother was Amelia McHugh (Land), daughter of Arthur McHugh (2nd wife, Martha Jane). She was born in Missouri where apparently they lived for a few years before returning to the Nanty Glo area. We did visit the area sometime when I was a child; I grew up in Pittsburgh, and those towns seemed incredibly tiny to me! I haven't been doing this genealogy thing for very long, and think I'm coming to the end of the "easy" stuff, and I'd love to hear how you traced it all back to Ireland.
Thanks!
Ann
Hi There,

Sorry I didn't reply before, but unfortunatley the e-mail from Ancestry was sent to an old address, which I only check occasionally. Our Annie McHugh was born in Cahir,Aghamore, Co. Mayo and emigrated to New York, where she married someone called McMahon. My aunt was in contact with both her and her sister, Delia(Golden) from Drexel Hill, but had no information about Annie's spouse. Any information you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hello, Eammon.. I s that Ed in Irish? I have been studying German and also learning how to use a MAC. But, truth be told, goofing off a lot. I say all this to explain my tardy reply. I will list the Mc Hughs of my kin:
1. 1810? George Mc Hugh m, Mary Kiely, Urney? Tyrone? Ulster

2.their many kids: Patrick ( 1836?) Mary ( 1840?) Hannah ( 1845?) James (?), Catherine? (unsure but in there somehow), Roseanna ( 1850) emigrated from No. Ireland to Phila.,PA from 1868-1880... was there also an Edward?

3.my own branch descends from Hannah Mc Hugh ( d. 1895 in Phila.)

4. Hannah's only child, Bernard ( Barney , as he was called , 1864?-1932 ) is my grandfather. He and Alice Maloy ( 1871-1909 ) had 9 children. She herself was English born but Ulster Irish origins.

4. My Father, Charles ( 1897-1961) was one of them and had a godfather called Arthur Mc Hugh

5. They were close-knit ( lived in same houses, worked in same industry ) close-mouthed and , when crossed, cut the offender out of the family history. Thus there is much much unclarity and many secrets. I think maybe the females were harder than the menfolk. At least, that seems true with my G-grandmother, Hannah. Alcoholism can never be ruled out. Sadly there was not yet AA and very likely this disease was seen as a personal failing/shame/disgrace.

6. If you are in Phila., where are you looking? Say as it always interest me . If nothing else, we can compare findings and maybe not confuse the families.

7. Have you been to Ireland to look? can you share any resources with me?
