Stacey,

I think some of the Smith's came from Logan Co., Ky. Tht would be Barnabas and Millington Smith and all McIntosh's in Union Co., Il were connected with the Smith's and Boren's. But I didn't know about the James Murphy family. But I did know Nimrod married Nancy Murphy and witnessed a Murphy wedding. The McIntosh's started in Orange and Culpeper Co., Va and moved to Caswell Co., NC before removing to Robertson Co., TN and on to Logan Co., Ky and then to southern Illinois. My line is kin to these others such as Nimrod, Charles, Benjamin, Thomas and John and Alexander whose will is in Robertson co., Tn in 1799.

A lot of connections. I printed your Murphy line off. Thanks a lot.

Marianne Dillow

Hi Marianne,
Gosh...not sure based upon the date, but would think it must be a one of this Murphy bunch, especially if James and Nicholas lived next to the McIntoshes. Heres the info that I have on Gabriel Jr. He does have a brother James that married Patsy Terrell, and a son James, but he wasn't born until later. Daughter Rachel married a John Smith. Again, another connection...

There has been speculation that this James was handicapped, because he always is living with someone else. He lived with my ancestor Edmond too.

Perhaps some of these names will ring a bell?

1st Generation

Gabriel Murphey Sr. married to Mary? Born (unknown prior to 1740) possibly in Overwharton Parish VA area. Migrated to Caswell Co. NC 1777 through early 1800's. Died in 1808 in Claiborne Co. TN.
Probable Children:
John
Elizabeth, married Samuel Hopper
*Gabriel Jr. married Clarey Herndon
James, married Patsey Terrell
Sarah, married unknown Whitmore
Marion, married unknown Browning
Nancy, married James Warren
William, married Lucy Terrell
Mary Ann, married Richard (Crabtree?) Ward

2nd Generation

Gabriel Murphey Jr.
Born between 1754-1766 in Caroline Co. area; died in 1818 in Russell Co. VA area.
Married Clarey Herndon in 1788, daughter of David Herndon and Frances Pierce.
Children:
Elizabeth Frances 1790, 93; married Thomas Cartwright
John 1794; married Jane Ferrell
Nancy Jane 1799; married Henry Cline
Rachel 1800; married John Smith
*Edmond 1803; married Susannah Clevenger and Polly Shortridge
James 1807
Clarey 1814; married Moses Cartwright (stepson of Frances, son of Thomas Cartwright)
Stacey,

I just posted this. Do you have any idea who this James Murphy is ??
_-----------------------------------------

I have posted quite a lot on William McIntosh who was in 1809 in Randolph Territory and later was part of Illinois when it became a state in 1818. He ended up in Wetaug and Alexander County, IL.

In the 1820 and 1830 Alexander County, Illinois census William McIntosh has William Smith living on one side of him. On the other side was ALWAYS a.... JAMES MURPHY and a Nicholas Murphy in one census.

I know Nimrod McIntosh is not my grandfather. I know Nimrod married Nancy Murphy and there was a Gabriel Murphy mentioned.

My question is: Would anyone know who this James Murphy with Nicholas is ?

In the 1820 Alexander County, Illinois census James Murphy is in the age range of 40-50 years old and wife in that time frame also. That would give James Murphy a birthdate between 1780-1790. Who is this fellow ??

Any help on James Murphy would greatly be appreciated. I know when Benjamin McIntosh died in 1815 in Johnson County, Illinois a deposition from Nimrod Mcintosh in Robertson Co., Tn was wanted and mentioned Stephen Boren as absent.

Any help on this James Murphy and who he is and his lineage would greatly be appreciated.

Marianne Dillow
Illinois

Hello,
I am descended from Gabriel Murphey Jr. & Clarissa Herndon. Nimrod McIntosh witnessed their marriage at the Caswell County courthouse in NC. If my memory is correct, they were neighbors in Caswell, both families migrated to NC from the Culpeper VA area. Along with Brownings, Herndons, Harps, Smiths, Terrells, etc. Lucinda is a very popular name with this family...

Gabriel & Nimrod worked on a road crew at one point. Clarissa's father was the foreman.

Interesting stuff!

Best,
Stacey

Hi,

Yes I know about Nimrod and Charles McIntosh in Robertson Co., TN. I am indirectly kin to them but my relationship is in the 1810 census of Illinois before it became a state in 1818. My 3rd great grandparents are George Washington McIntosh born in 1813 in land that became Illinois. He married Elizabeth Hoffner in 1838 in Union Co., IL. He died in 1875 in Pulaski Co., Il

In the 1810 census of Illinois John, Thomas, William, Benjamin and Charles Mcintosh were here with William settling in the same area of my grandfather who went by Washington McIntosh or G.W. McIntosh. William according to census records was born 1770-1780 and disappeared after the 1830 census of Alexander Co., Il. Living next to him is a William Smith and a James Murphy.

My Washington McIntosh is not Washington Lafayette McIntosh who is the son of John Mcintosh and Mary Miller. This John died in 1831 in Union Co., Il. Some of the Robertson Co., TN and the Logan Co., Ky McIntosh's were the ones who came to Union Co., IL with Johnson, Alexander and Pulaski formed from it.

Marianne Dillow
Illinois

I am looking for info about William Andrew McIntosh - ancestors, descendants... anything at all really. What I have is this: He was born in Vancouver B.C. Canada, in 1911. He died in California in 1982. His wife's name was Margaret Rebecca Wilson born in 1912 in Cereal, Alberta Canada. His father may have been Finley McIntosh, born in Scotland and ended up in Waubaushene, Ontario, Canada. Finley's wife's maiden name may have been Swartman. We think Finley was a captain on a Great Lakes ship.

Hello again, I just happened to look at your messages and this caught my eye. This line is on my mother's side. This what I have: Hector's father is William McIntosh b. ca.1730 in Scotland and he is the son of William of Elrig , b.1615. and he is the son of the 2nd. son of the 18th Chief. Now there must be William or a Hector between those to for the age differece is to much. Hector and Mary are the parents of John McIntosh who married Barbara Mckenzie and are the parents of Christian (Kate) who married George W.Fitzgerald who is my Great-Great Grandfather. I look forward to corresponding with you on this line also. my e-mail is:
lahomastum47@yahoo.com Thank you, Lahoma

I am looking for information on a Charles McIntosh b. abt 1860 who evidently lived in IL ( early 20th century ) having imigrated from Scotland. He or a brother had a son Donald Scott McIntosh, b. abt 1897, living in IL, who in turn had two known sons, Donald Gordon McIntosh b 1918, Robert Alan McIntosh and one perhaps step son Bernard. Donald G was my father or a son by a previous marriage. I have a bible dated 1881 with Charles McIntosh on the front and Donald Scott's death recorded in it but am unsure if Charles was in fact Donald S. McIntosh's father or uncle.Family oral tradition has Charles imigrating from Glasgow but originating the the Clan Chattan territories in Scotland. Being a Catholic family they may have come from around Braemar.

Donald Scott ( Donald S. ) McIntosh is shown in the 1920 census for Cook County Il, being born in IL, father born Scotland, Mother ( unknown name ) born Iowa, and having a wife named Ruth ( didnt show her last name, may have been Gordon, who may have been born in MO ) and having a son Donald aged 1.Donald ( Donald Gordon McIntosh ) , my father, who was born May 30, 1918.

Donald Gordon moved to MI, ( sometime in the 1940's )and married a Ruth Bailey-Goff ( my mother ) the daughter of Everett Goff and Hazle Baily. Everett had a brother named Eber. Donald G and Ruth I McIntosh had 5 surving children. Gordon Donald, Ronald Scott, Sandra Marie, Kathryn Ellen and Kenneth A.

If any one jhas information on this Charles or Donald Scott McIntosh please send it to me at kycowboy41@aol.com

For genealogy on the Mackintosh/Macintosh/McIntosh families you might also want to see my website at a2fister2000.tripod.com as it details many lines of the Macintosh families from Scotland and here in the US.
Checking though the books I have concerning Union County, Illinois, I have only discovered one notation. It is from the book "The Michael Harman Dillow and Anna Margareth Holshouser Family, Volume I - Michael, Sr (1755-1805)" by Paul Dean Dillow, Page 275, and relates to Daniel Jerome Dillow (ID number .11632) he married 1) Martha Ellen Miller 12 Mar 1876, Union Co., Illinois. Martha was born 3 Jun3 1856, Gold Hill, Rowan Co., NC; the daughter of William Miller and Clarinda McIntosh, she died 8 Nov 1878, Dongola, Union Co., IL, and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Union Co., Illinois. Martha and Daniel had two children: Lewis Leroy Dillow, b: 1 Feb 1877, Union Co., IL and Clara Martha Dillow, b: 21 Oct 1878, d: 17 Nov 1937, location not noted.

There are many more books concerning this area that I do not currently have. But, your best chance for obtaining information is either to contact the Clerk's office, Jonesboro, Union Co, IL to see if there is a death certificate for either Martha or Clarinda, or if you are in close proximity, you might visit the Clerk's office in person.

There were a few McIntosh families in Union County, Illinois. I am descended from one and they appear to relate back to a family in Tennessee, and that was originally from Rowan, NC. I am in the early stages of researching this family and have not obtained a lot of information. However, if you have access to census records online, you will find that many of these families came to Union Co. very early.

Good luck in your search, I will keep you in mind while doing my own research.

Susan Hale Parkhurst
I'm a direct decendant of Finlay McIntosh & Jerusha Robb. She is buried in Brant County Ontario, not far from where I live. Am intested in locating as many family members as possible. Have lots of info on this branch of the family. If you're interested you can e-mail me at marilyn2209@hotmail.com, thanks, Marilyn

Re: Finlay McIntosh about 1780- 1818

Carolyn: I have no proof this is the same Finlay, but it certainly fits in with the family history. Finlay was married to Jerusha Robb & she remarried, so she was widowed. One of their sons Andrew Bates McIntosh was my gggrandfather. His daughter Adaliza Albina McIntosh married John Foy, an Irish immigrant. Their son Arnold Saunders Foy was my grandfather & his son, Charles Wesley Foy was my father. Jerusha is buried in a cemetery not far from where I live in southwestern Ontario. Hope this helps, Marilyn

George McTush or McIntosh

I have found marriage certificate; civil war record of George McTush, he was married in Kentucky to Amanda Manthus McKinney around 1876; Part of TN Civil War Infantry; then he leaves Amanda no one knows why; she remarries a McCoy and he give there son John a last name of McCoy instead of McTush. Other than finding a family of them in KY and some in TN/and in the South; Nothing; name could have been changed or been McIntosh; but apparently John P. McCoy knew he wasn't really a McCoy; but never told about his real father what happened; Anyone have a George McTush or spelling /soundex similar to this could you contact me. Help! I have nothing on him; can't find a divorce either but my understanding a lot of people didn't divorce if they didn't want to be married they just left. And Amanda McKinney married a McCoy; she could have been married before she married a McCoy after George McTush(he was first husband). Any help would be appreciated as to whom this family might have been. Thanks Denise
