I know it's a bit late in the day as it's ten years ago when you posted this but I was intrigued when my eye caught the bit where you say you have "some strange ways"

I'm Peter McIver and I was born on 6th May 1951 in Liverpool, England and throughout my whole life I was labelled with the phrase: oh that's just Peter and his funny little ways
In 1997 at the age of 46 I found out that my strange, funny little ways were actually called Tourette Syndrome, OCD and ADHD

Hi

I have Mary McIver, widow, living with her children in Dog Leap Yard in 1861. She and some children were born in Scotland. Her husband John appeared in the 1841 census, when they were living in "Side, Newcastle." He is marked as born "Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts," and had died by 1851 - when the family were living in St Nicholas Square, Newcastle. One daughter (Susan/Susannah) married James Wood from Bilston, Staffordshire and they were living in Dog Leap Terrace in 1881.

If there is a connection I'd be very interested in any info you have.

Hubert McIver b. 1868 Wisconsin, 1900 resided Sioux City, Iowa

I am looking for information on Hubert McIver who was born in Wisconsin in 1868. His parents may have been Hugh and Elizabeth McIver who lived in Avoca, WI in 1870 but I have not verified this. One of their children listed in the census is the correct age but listed only as H.H. McIver. Hubert married Frances (Fannie) Mason (b. 1878 in Sioux Falls, SD, d. 1951 in Los angeles, CA) and had three children, Gorman (b. circa 1894 Sioux Falls, SD; d. WW1), Robert (b. 1896 Sioux Falls, SD; d. 1948 Monterey, CA) and Charles (b. 1900 Sioux City, Iowa; d. 1988 Orange County, CA ). The 1900 census shows Hubert and family living in Sioux City, Iowa but I cannot find Hubert afer this. I would welcome any help. Thank you.

After Extensive research I have found the McIvers were in Ireland before 1608.Example is one McIver who was a secratery to the Cheif of the O Neals in the 1500's although this account is hazzy it purports that this McIver was killed with O'Neal in a meeting with the MacDonnels. It is believed how ever that it was not McIver who Died but a McConnell, who was a nephew to the Lady Campbell of Argyll, and that the McIver spoken of was not presant at that meeting. It also known that many McIvers at that time known as sons of Neill went to Scotland and formed the Scottish Dalriada, hence one of our progenitors was a well known Paul O'Duin of Lochaw. This Paul's son's went on to produce many of the most ancient known Clans of the Scottish Highlands,of which were The M'Iver',M'Tavish's,and the Campbell's,to name only a few. This is to show that we actually were in Ulster Ireland before we were in Scotland, and that we actually were just coming home to Ireland. Our geneolgy supports this as with any of the true line of M'Iver's show a very strong connection with the Campbell's and why we are also Known as McIver Campbells.Sincerely Richard McKeever Campbell."NunQuam Obliviscar"(I Will Not Forget).

Our John McIver, native of VT, died in Gold Rush country in California. We thought we found his father, Felix McIver, in VT -- name spelled correctly on his tombstone. On census records it was McKever, McKeever, and McEver. He had a son John, but not ours. His John was b. abt 1833 and was buried in St Albans, VT, died 31 Dec 1865. So he's not your John Angus, McIver. I learned, again, the importance of checking spelling variations. Good luck.

Elaine

Elaine,

Was the John McIver you note as buried in Vermont by any chance John Angus McIver (4/15/1844-6/30/1916) buried in Lake Road Cemetery, Newport, VT? If so, that is my wife's 2 x great grandfather.

I mention this because I have kept whatever I have found on McIver's in Vermont and Canada and would be willing to check my records for your John, if you have some dates or other data.
Dear Isabel: I have read with interest about your MCIVER family from Nova Scotia. It suggested a possible association with my McIVER ancestry from County Tyrone,NI, one of the areas settled during the years of the Ulster Plantation (starting in first decade of the 1600s)when thousands of Scottish families were brought from Scotland to farm in eastern Ulster, including County Tyrone. Many of those Scots-Irish emigrated to Nova Scotia. Do you know when your grandparents' family reached Nova Scotia? and from where in Scotland? ot Ireland? Does your family associate their heritage and name with Clan Campbell? Thank you for anything you can tell me. Helena McIver Howell, Prescott, Arizona

I note in a 2007 communication from you on the McIver message board that you have a book entitled OUR FAMILY, referring to McIver family. Would you be kind enough to consult the book to find mention of any McIvers who went to any of the counties of Ulster during the years of the Ulster Plantation starting in the early 1600s on up through the early 1800s? Because I have found no mention of that surname in any earlier Irish records (pre-1600) I am convinced my ancestors originated in Scotland, quite possibly in association with Clan Campbell, but there are also other clans with McIver associations. Anything you might tell me would be gratefully appreciated. Feel free to contact me both on the Message Board and directly (helhow@afaz.net) Thank you. Helena McIver Howell

I don't have a family that fits your information exactly, but I'm wondering if Catherine could be the daughter of John Ban McIver and Nancy McDonald. My information shows that she was born in the right timeframe in N.C. She married "Big Duncan" McIver, but I don't have any information about his family and have no children for them. Can you give your source for the obit?

Hi, I've found a couple of possible matches from the 1851 Census, one is John Maciver and the other John Mciver. You cannot rely upon the spelling to confirm which is the correct person as the Hebrideans were predominantly Gaelic-speakers rather then English. If you have any more information let me know.

Hi,
I descend from the MacIvers of Lewis, Scotland and I have some experience in tracing them.
If we look at your Margaret, since she was born in 1887, she should be on the 1901 Canada census or the 1900 U.S. census. There are none that come close based on the birth year. On the 1900 census of the U.S. I found one living in Cambridge Mass. with her parents Daniel and Henrietta. There is also two other daughters, Etta and Isabel, both younger. It is important to note that the Scots use Donald and Daniel interchangeably.
The 1910 census shows her living with an aunt and uncle in Cambridge Mass.
The 1920 census shows an Arthur Birch (Berck) living in Chicopee, Mass. with wife Margaret and child George age 5.
I think this may be your Margaret McIver
I checked the births in Ontario (English Canada) but foundnothing that matches the date of birth for Margaret.
Since you don't have much to go on, I would investigate this line closely.
I noticed that from census to census the birth place for Margaret and her mother change from Canada to Scotland.
I guess it depends on who supplied the information to the census taker.

Dear Mr Price I saw your following message posted on Rootsweb: "Hello Alastair
Thanks very much for your message. I am descended from Mary Ross MacIver through her third son Roderick Macdonald (1811-1869) who emigrated to Canada and married Johanna Mackay in 1836. Their daughter Louisa Macdonald married Dr David Dibble in 1862. Their daughter Mary Dibble married Wilfred Campbell, the poet, in 1884. Their eldest daughter Margery married George Grey around 1905 and their youngest daughter Mary was my mother. I am researching the ancestry of Mary Ross MacIver. She was the daughter of Daniel MacIver and Mary Ross. Daniel MacIver's parents were John MacIver from Tolsta in Isle of Lewis and Annabella McKenzie. I know nothing about their ancestry. Also, I have no imformation about Mary Ross' ancestry except in Wilfred Campbell's papers it mentioned that she was a "cousin" of Gladstone's mother, Anne Robertson from the Robertsons of Kindeace, but I haven't found any connection. I haven't seen a copy of the book - I'll look out for it next time I'm in the Briti!
sh Library or Society of Genealogists in London - but as it was privately published, they may not have a copy. I would be grateful for any help in this whole area.
Regards
Rodney Price"
I am descendant of Daniel Mackenzie of Loggie and his wife Annabella Mackenzie a daughter of Alexander Mackenzie 5th of Gairloch. From my research I know that Annabella is a name which crops up amongst the descendants of Alexander 5th of Gairloch whose second wife, Isobel Mackenzie of Coul, was the daughter of Annabella Mackenzie of Fairburn, and also in the descendants (such as in the Mackenzies of Gruinard, through the female line) of Daniel of Loggie and Annabella. This is how Gladstone's mother descends from Alexander Mackenzie 7th of Gairloch, grandson of Alexander 5th of Gairloch:
II. KENNETH MACKENZIE, second of Torridon, who in 1703 married Ann, daughter of Alexander Mackenzie, VII. of Gairloch, with issue -

1. John, his heir and successor.

2. Mary, who married Colin Mackenzie, a Bailie of Dingwall, with issue - (1) Kenneth, who married Margaret Macdonald, Skye, with issue - Alexander, who died young in Jamaica; John, Lieutenant 78th Regiment, who died in India, without issue; and Donald, who died young. Kenneth had also several daughters - Janet, who married John Chisholm, Dingwall, where she died, without issue, in 1870, aged 95; Mary, and Margaret Anne, both of whom died unmarried; and Alexanderina, who married Captain Munro, 42nd Highlanders. (2) John, a merchant in Bishopsgate Street, London, who married a daughter of his partner, Alexander Mackenzie of the Coul family, with issue - Colin Alexander, known as "the Ambassador," who died unmarried in 1851; Kenneth, who died young; John, a Colonel H.E.I.C.S.; Alexander, of Christ Church, Oxford, who died unmarried; and Caroline, who married Dr William Wald, without issue. (3) Alexander, who died young. (4) Mary, who married Murdoch Mackenzie, Bailie of Dingwall, without issue. (5) Anne, who married Andrew Robertson, Provost of Dingwall and Sheriff-Substitute of Ross, grandson of Colin Robertson of Kindeace, with issue - Anne, who as his second wife married Sir John Gladstone, Baronet of Fasque, with issue, among others - the great statesman, the Right Hon. William Ewart Gladstone of Hawarden, M.P., who as we write is, in his eighty fifth year for the fourth time Prime Minister of Great Britain. (6) Fanny, who married John Mackenzie of Kinellan, with issue - Colin, who died young; Alexander, who married Mary Macdonald; Margaret, who married Farquhar Matheson and Mary, Christy, and Janet, all of whom died unmarried. (7) Betsy, who married a Mr Simpson; and (8) Elizabeth.

So it is very likely that your ancestress Annabella Mackenzie descends somehow from this family (Mackenzie of Torridon or Mackenzie of Gairloch) and was indeed a cousin of Gladstone's mother.

The genealogical history of the Mackenzies written by Alexander Mackenzie in the C19th was far from being comprehensive.

Also, you may be interested to know that Sir Alexander Mackenzie the explorer (who I have established descends from Roderick Mackenzie 5th of Fairburn in the direct male line) descends also, in the female line from Daniel of Loggie and Annabella. He had a mother who was the daughter of Donald MacIver the tacksman of Tolsta c1755-80. Your John must be from this family. The Mackenzies tended a great deal to marry their cousins and this further corroborates the fact that your Annabella must come from these lines somewhere.

I hope this is helpful.

With best wishes

Kevin McKenzie

Dear Mr McKenzie
Thank you very much for your message
I was told that Mary Ross McIvor's mother, Mary Ross, was a cousin of Gladstone's mother. This perhaps was incorrect and it maybe that Mary Ross McIver's father was the cousin - as, in fact he was ! His mother Annabella McKenzie was a ggd of Alexander McKenzie, VII of Gairloch through his younger son John of Lockend.
As you have shown, Anne Robertson (Gladstone's mother), through her mother, Anne McKenzie, was a gggd of Alexander McKenzie, VII of Gairloch, through Kenneth McKenzie, II of Torridon.
Whilst this probably clears up the relationship of Mary Ross McIver to Gladstone's mother, unfortunately, the ancestry of her (Mary Ross McIver's) mother is still unknown.
Kind regards
Rodney Price
I found some more info on my McIVER/McKEEVER line.

I found Hester/Essy listed in the 1870 PA Census living in Philadelphia with the following people:

McFadden, Robt / 32/ M/ W/ Mast. Moul. N. Y./ PA/
McFadden, Elizabeth /29/ F/ W/ at home/ Ireland/
McFadden, Rich / 8/ M/ W/ at home/ PA/
McFadden, Mary / 7/ F/ W/ at home/ PA/
McFadden, Robert / 5/M/ W/ at home/ PA/
McFadden, Jane / 5/ F/ W/ at home/ PA/
McFadden, Wm H. / 1/ M/ W/ at home/ PA/
McKeever, Hen /21/ M/ W/ House Carp./ Ireland/
McKeever, Essy / 23/ F/ W/ at home/ Ireland/

It looks like Elizabeth is her sister. I found a death cert for Elizabeth MCFADDEN (1841-1913) listing her birth parents as Margaret MCFADDEN and Robert McKEEVER. The 1900 PA Census states that Elizabeth immigrated in 1853.
The 1860 PA Census shows Elizabeth McKEEVER age 21, living with, Robert MCFADDEN age 60, Jane MCFADDEN age 52, Robert MCFADDEN age 25 and Martha McKEEVER age 19. She married Robert after the 1860 Census. I wonder if he was a relative of her mother Margaret MCFADDEN. I haven't found anymore on Martha McKEEVER. I guess she might be her sister but have no proof.

Elizabeth and Robert had the following children:

Richard b. 1861
Mary A. b. 1863
Jane b. c1864
Robert b. c1864
William b. c1868
Maggie b. 1871
Mattie b. 1877
Sarah b. 1879

Henry McKEEVER (c1850-1907) appears to be Hester's brother. His death cert does not list parents names. The address on his death cert is the same one that Hester is living at. He is listed in the 1880 PA Census living in Philadelphia with a wife named Catherine (b c1851 IRE - 1904 PA) and a son Robert b. c 1878. The 1900 PA Census has Henry living in Phila with his wife S. Catherine. Have not found any more info on his son Robert.

I hope this info helps me to find someone else researching this family.

I'm looking for connections to Hester (Acey, Essie) Ann MacIVER. She was born abt 1854 in Ireland. She died 11 Jun 1913 in Philadelphia, PA. Her death certificate list her name as Hester McKEEVER PEEL and her parents as Robert McKEEVER and Margaret McFADDEN. She married Robert PEEL abt 1872. The 1910 Census states that she immigrated in 1870. I have not been able to find any siblings or find her on a passenger list. I'm hoping to connect with others researching her.
We have a tombstone in CA which states our John McIver was a native of VT. We thought we found him until we found another John McIver buried in VT -- not the right McIver family. But the Felix McIver (thought to be John's father) we traced was living in Montreal after he immigrated from Ireland, so sorry --no obvious relationship.

Elaine McIver

I'm so sorry it's not the same one. We're looking for other relatives after finding John's father, Felix, in the 1850, 60, and 70 censuses. Name spelled wrong every census.
I'm sure our John and your John are somehow related. John's father, Felix, was born in Ireland. His wife's from Canada, so I presume he came into the States that way.

Good luck!
Elaine McIver

I'm sorry to say it's not the same one. We found our John, my husband's GG grandfather in a Vermont census, had overlooked it previously because the name was spelled McEver, and later McKever and McKeever. I think the census taker was spelling what he heard pronounced, because we found John's father on the town records of St. Albans and also his citizenship application. John's father was named Felix and came from Ireland.

Thanks for writing--I really appreciate your time.
