"James Ardric McKay
Mr. McKay, 92, of Mint Hill died Saturday, September 10, 2005 at Presbyterian Hospital. The family will greet friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2005 at McEwen-Mint Hill Chapel. A service from the graveside will follow at 11:15 a.m. in Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd., with Dr. Charles Williamson officiating.
Mr. McKay was born July 27, 1913 in Huntersville [, Mecklenburg County], NC, a son of the late William Rouch McKay and Eulala Ewart McKay. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Henrietta McWhirter McKay, and his siblings, Lottie McKay Sims and Ralph McKay.
Mr. McKay lived in Mint Hill for over fifty years and was an active member of the community. He was one of the earliest elected members of the Mint Hill Town Council, on which he served as a Town Commissioner from 1977 until 1985. Mr. McKay was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church where he served in many offices of the church, including treasurer, deacon, elder, and Elder Emeritus. He served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. Following his honorable discharge, he attended King's College in Charlotte. Mr. McKay retired July 1, 1973 after thrity-three years of service with Exxon. He was known as 'Jim' to friends in Mint Hill, 'Ardric' to his Huntersville family and 'Red' to those with whom he worked, due to a full head of dark auburn hair.
Mr. McKay loved music; however, he could not play any instrument. He filled that void by collecting thousands of records over a fifty-year period.
Mr. McKay is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey L. McKay and Diana Woolley of Wilmingotn, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Linda James McKay and Frank J. Marine of Alexlandria, VA; sister, Rachel Hucks of Huntersville, NC and her family; and members of the McWhirter family."
