I have a real good book on the McKeans McKeens and in the names in the book there is not a McAllister. The author traced some of the families up to the 1890s but not all. If McAllister is a more recent name it probably wouldn't be in the book.
Hope this helps a little,
Dave

From the other comments this looks like his second marriage and it's through their son Claude that my father was born in Fife.

C.

Update,
I have now found out that Andrew McKean and his wife Catherine McKean (Donaldson) had another child besides John in 1852, they had atleast one daughter, Elizabeth Laidlaw McKean born Jan 6/1856 in Bridgeton/Glasgow.

Aswell, there is also another birth on the LDS/FS site for the same date in Glasgow/Lanark of a Catherine Mckean to the same parents, furthermore she is baptized on Feb 10/1856, but I can not find this either on Scotlandspeople.

Furthermore I found in the 1861 – Census (Avondale/Lanark) Andrew McKean (age 32) occupation cotton weaver is living with his wife Marea? (age 33) and son James? (age 1) at #82 Loauhead? (I have seen doc.)

Now if this is the same Andrew who was the parent of Elizabeth Laidlaw McKean then he has remarried, possibly Catherine died sometime after 1856.
This is the only Andrew between the age of 28 to 32 recorded as living in all the Lanark area.

Any help with this would be much appreicated, thank you.

Andrew McKean marriage 1851 Barony Glasgow

Hello.I am looking for info on the family of Andrew Mckean who married Catherine Donaldson on July 18 1851 in Barony Glasgow.
According to an LDS search I did they had a son named John McKean on June 11/1852 but I can not find him in Scotlands People. Furthermore I don't know what happened to them after the birth of their son, I just know that John McKean was later found living in the home of John Donaldson and Elizabeth (Laidlaw) according to the 1861 and 1871 census as a nephew in 61 and a grandson in 1871.

The Catherine I identified as the daughter of John Donaldson and Elizabeth Laidlaw, and a search on the LDS site found two possible parents for Andrew as,
1 - WILLIAM MACKEAN and JEAN NEIL,Dunbarton, Scotland.
2 - JOHN MCKEAN and ROZANNA MCCOLM, from wigtown,Scotland.

Any info on this family would be appreicated, thank you.

Hi Ivan

I would be very interested in finding out about the Irish name changing thing! I am a Mckeane, my father dropped the e from the end, after my birth, he said the family name was Mckean in the past. And that they came from Ireland. I have had no luck in finding my James Mckean/Mckeane/Kane born c1823 somewhere in Ireland.(the latter was what the family called their grandparents!?)

Family oral history says the family moved from Scotland to Ireland, then back to Scotland. I doubt that very much, I am guessing pure Irish!

cathybold@hotmail.com

Re: McKean Family - Ireland Canada

Hi Cathy,
I can only speak of my own family name's origin, which I share with my second cousin, Bill McKean above.

Like you I have an ancestor called James McKean born in the 1820's. He was my GG grandfather. He married Margaret Brush in 1848, but we can only estimate his date of birth.

His surname appears in the IGI marriage records as James McKane. In parts of Northern Ireland, both McKean and McKane can sound virtually the same in the local accent. In those times illiteracy was rife, so only the educated could make a guess at the spelling of names, whether Gaelic or English. As there was no formal standardised spelling of surnames this also lead to anolmalies.

His son John, spelt his name as McKean, but my grandfather Charles spelt it MacKean! Either way, it's best to explore all possible spellings of the name. Leave no stone unturned!

My family appears to have come from Northern Ireland (or Ulster), but as they were recorded as Presbyterian, it's unlikely their forebears were Irish. More likely they were originally Scottish Presbyterians, brought in to occupy the fertile farmlands, and displace the Catholic Irish during the period called the 'Plantations'. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantations_of_Ireland

Subsequently during the Irish Famine in the 1840's, many Irish fled the country. About a third of them came to the British mainland, as did my own ancestors. John McKean joind the British Army, married an English girl, and later settled in Scotland. Cities like Glasgow had a large proportion of Irish immigrants. Until 1922, Ireland was under British rule, so the population wasn't moving abroad so much as just moving within their own country.

So it's not impossible for your ancestors to have followed the same route. In fact it would be interesting to know if we share the same ancestors! We seem to share some very similar stories. James & Margaret had two sons, John born 1849, and James born 1851 near Aughnacloy, Co.Tyrone. Do these names appear in your tree at all I wonder?

Best wishes, Mike MacKean

I found this in a book of old newspaper clipping I purchased. Its for the year 1886.

Deputy Coroner Ashbridge held inquest today in the case of Richard Dunckley, aged 41 years of No. 28 Church Street Frankford, who committed suicide on Friday by hanging himself to the bars of a cell in the Frankford station-house using his shirt sleeves to accomplish his object. He had been arrested for drunkenness. The jury gave a verdict of suicide by hanging
