I saw your post on Ancestry. I am stumped with John William McKee, my GGGrandfather, born 1834 New York. His civil war enlistment record lists Tomkins, New York, as his birthplace. It doesn't appear there is or was a Tomkins, but there is a Tompkins County and a Tompkins in Delaware County, both having quite a few McKees.
All his other records including census list his birth place only as New York, however his two children list his birth place as Ireland most frequently, Scotland at least once, and born at sea by his daughter once. One possible option is that for some reason he lied about being born in the New York/USA, and really was an Irish or Scottish immigrant.
I can't find any records of him or his parents or siblings until the federal census of 1860 when he is listed as a farmer, only one in household, in Nicollet County, Minnesota. Married in 1862, to Mary Ann Walter, died 1864 as a union POW in Georgia. Two children, John William McKee II, and Margaretha McKee.
Any help would be much appreciated!
