James and Margaret (Pierce) McKee had 12 kids, and they left Pa.,went to Freeport about 1835, left, returned, always on the move, (he was a tanner) but they bought a farm near Perl City about 1862, where they are buried.
James & Marg. were raised near McKeesport, in Westmorland Co.area. The McKee and Pierce families intermarried, as they were probably neighbors. Her father, Peter, and his bro. both marrd. Veasy girls, Martha and ?. Samuel McKee (Jr) was father of James but there is no proof that Nancy McConnel was Saml's wife. Her name never appears on court papers, butis penciled in. His sister,Nancy, (perhaps half sis.) marrd. brother of Margaret, Joseph Pierce and they went to Ohio. The grandmother of both James and Margaret was Margaret (widow of Sam McKee), widowed young with six kids, one a Sam, (james father). She then mard. John Veasy. ca, 1785. (Their 3 kids marrd. Pierces.)
Can anyone add to this info?

McKee/Leeth/Cornwell connection Jefferson Co. KY

In researching my Cornwell family, I have recently have been examining a connection to the McKee/McKay and Leeth/Leath families in Jefferson County, Kentucky, early 1800s.

Specifically, I am trying to determine whether someone can shed light on the following information found in the Cornwell file at the Stevens Library in Salem Indiana:

Marriage Register Jefferson County Kentucky Court House, Louisville, Kentucky. Book 1 - Feb. 16, 1784 to May 10, 1842.

Arterburn, William Jr. of lawful age of 21 yrs. Enos McKie who heard his parents say so. Presley Art. Witt.,
Leeth, Nancy m. 7-10-1815., Witt: Peter Cornwell, guardian,
Peter Cornwell’s step daughter.

Peter Cornwell was my 3rd great-grandfather and William Arterburn (father of the William who married Nancy Leeth) was my 4th great grandfather. So, of course, I am very interested in determining why Peter Cornwell would have been guardian of Nancy Leeth - and how he possibly could have been her stepfather.

This is my understanding of the marriages of the children of William Arterburn and Nancy Johnson:

William Arterburn m. Nancy Leeth in 1815
Elizabeth Arterburn m. Peter Cornwell in 1802
Sarah Sally Arterburn m. Enos McKee
Presley Arterburn m. Sally Netherton
Elijah Arterburn m. Mary Polly Booker

Accordingly, I am unsure why Peter Cornwell would have been the guardian of Nancy Leeth in 1815. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate your sharing it with me.

Carl McKee died when I was 12, and I never got to know him. He had 2 children of his own, Elizabeth and David. ANY INFO helping me find Kelly would be greatly appreciated!!!!

John Andrew Mckee born 1874 in Canada

I'm looking for the date and place of death for John Andrew McKee born 29 January 1875 in Ontario or Manitoba, Canada. Parents: William McKee and Isabella McKenzie. John married Rachael Patten on 12 March, 1903 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They had one son Clayton born on 6 October 1904. The family lived in Carman, Manitoba in 1906. I have not found any of the family members in Canadian Census 1911.
Rachael was widowed sometimes during 1907-10. She was remarried to Norman D Morrison about 1913. I have not found John Andrew McKee in the Manitoba Death Records so he probably did not live in Manitoba when he died.
I'm grateful for any help with finding his death record.

Barbro Funseth in Sweden
George W. MCKEE (1829-1910) obit

"SETTLED HERE IN 1847"
"George McKee, Who Died Near Westboro Recently."

"The subject of this sketch is one of the oldest pioneers of Atchison county. He was born April 2, 1829, in Holmes county, Ohio; died Dec. 29, 1910, near Westboro, Mo., aged 81 years, 3 months and 17 days.

His parents were natives of Delaware, moving to Marion county, Indiana, in 1840, where he grew to manhood. Spending his boyhood days on the farm, he has ever since given his attention to agriculture. A few years ago he gave up farming on account of his age and has since made his home with his children.

He accompanied his parents to Missouri in the fall of '47, and settled near Center Grove. He has always been an industrious, hard-working citizen, and is widely known throughout the county.

Mr. McKee married, Feb. 20, 1852, Miss Nancy Ann Ross. Ten children were born to this union, nine girls and one boy; eight of whom, together with his heartbroken wife, remain to mourn his death.

He was a member of the Methodist church, having confessed his faith when a boy, and died as he had lived -- a christian man.

The funeral services were conducted at the Center Grove church, Saturday afternoon, Dec 31, by Rev. E. L. Robison, pastor of the M. E. church at Westboro. -- Tarkio Avalanche."

---------- Notes by poster ----------
This probably appeared in an Atchison County MO newpaper in January 1911.

He is thought to be a son of Abner "Eben" MCKEE (abt 1877- abt 1855) and Sarah/Ferran HAZEL (1790-1873).

A biographical sketch of him from 1882 is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~moatchis/1882/p918.htm

Fleming Co, KY 1800's Mckee families

Hello -

I am looking for some information about McKee's in Fleming County, KY during the 1800's. I believe this is where my line is from. I have a GGGF Thomas McKee, born c. 1876 or 1877 in Kentucky, per 1910 Census in Mill township, Grant County, Indiana. Married Pearl (unknown maiden) of Grant county in 1898.

1880 Census shows only one Thomas McKee, born during target timeframe and in KY, listed as Nephew of Elizabeth Ingram (or Ingran)in town of Tilton (Maybe Litton)in Fleming Co KY. Father James McKee also listed in household, born c. 1810.

Searching the Ancestry community I found information regarding these people, Elizabeth McKee born c.1836 to James and Eliza Mott McKee, married Hiram Ingram. I can not find any siblings of Elizabeth to identify parents of Nephew Thomas. Of course this may be a moot point if I can prove this is not the Thomas McKee born 1876-77 that I am related to, but I believe it is a strong probability of being correct.

I would love to share information with anyone from this line of McKee's.

Thank you.

Jason McKee
jason.mckee@hotmail.com

Patrick McKee b. 1810, Ireland to Nashville, TN

I am looking for descendants of Patrick McKee, b. about 1810 in Ireland. He and his wife, Margaret, emigrated to the U.S.A. in the mid 1850s, living first in Scary Creek, Virginia (later West Virginia), but moving on to Nashville, Tennessee where they are found in the 1860 and 1870 US Census, but no sign in the 1880 census. Patrick was a stone mason.

They had 6 children: Patrick J.(b. 1842), Michael J. (b. 1847), Bridget (b. 1850), Thomas Michael (b. 1854), Mary (b. 1854), and John (b. 1862). The 3 oldest were born in Ireland, Thomas was born in Virginia, and the 2 youngest were born in Tennessee. Patrick and Michael both stayed in Nashville--Patrick served in the Civil War and then became a grocer, and Michael was a bookkeeper. Thomas migrated out west and settled in Colorado, where he became well known as a photographer. I don't know what became of Bridget, Mary, and John.

Would love to correspond with anyone connected with this family. Am particularly interested in learning more about this family's Irish roots, what happened to the parents (Patrick and Margaret), and more about their children and grandchildren.

George Washington McKee 1858 - 1909

Friends,

I am searching for information on my great grandfather, George Washington McKee.  I know he was born  around 1858 in Penn.  He married Chloe Devault and is listed on the 1900 Census.  His children are as follows;

Ruth McKee Born 1893 Ill.
Helen (Hester) McKee Born 1895 Mo.
Francis McKee Born 1897 Mo.
Hiram McKee Born 1900 Mo.
(my grandfather).
Blanch McKee Born 1903 Mo.
Leo McKee Born 1906 Mo.

Chloe (Devault) McKee’s father was Hiram Devault from Ohio and her mother was Lavina Beck also from Ohio. I can’t find a marriage record for them or a death certificate for George Washington McKee that fits the correct time frame. They lived in Tarkio Missouri which is in Atchison County. Chloe was born on 13 December, 1868 and died on 28 February, 1919. In the 1910 Census she is listed as a widow. Leo was born in 1906 so George had to have passed sometime between 1905 and 1910.
If anyone has any information on this branch of my family I would appreciate the help. This is my wife's account. My email address is mckee1303@yahoo.com.

Respectfully,

David Robert McKee
Annie Donnelly date of death

Seeking death date for Annie (Agnes) Donnelly, nee McKee (McKay).Born bet. 1847 - 1850 Scotland.
Widow of Andrew Donnelly (died October 19, 1922). Resided in Fitchburg, MA & is most likely buried in
St. Bernards Cemetery. Besides Donnelly plots, she could have been buried in McMurray, McCabe, Baldwin or
Enwright plots.

She was known to be alive as of October 19, 1922 and was probably dead no later than August 13, 1936. There

is a small possiblity that she died later, & even a slimmer chance that she might have died in Pawtucket or

Providence, RI

I have made extensive searchs on line thru Ancestry & others. Have also gone through thousands of entries

for the Fitchburg Sentinel.

Again, all I am hoping for is a date of death, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all,

Bob Cormier
Yoncalla, OR

I am posting this on multiple boards & list, so I apologize for the duplication.

Need help in Greensburg, Pa.-Sam'l & Robert McKee

Trying to get more info on 5th Gr. father, died Hempfield Twp, Westmor. Co. in 1780, believed to be killed in indian fight. He was about 40, neighbor of the Brownlees, and left 8 minor children, named in Orphans Court at Hannastown. Widow, Margaret, md. John Veasy about 1784, and they remained on the McKee homestead another 15 years.
A John McKee & Samuel Jr. bought the farm; wife Nancy McConnel, whose bro, John, mard.Sams sister. Other siblings mard. Wm. Lyons, Robison, Edward Pierce.
Samuel is sometimes listed as son of David McK.,founder of McK.port, and was the Sgt. Saml. McKee who rode in the Revol. with Capt. Robert McKee, and with friend, Gen. St. Clair. They are buried (not Gen.) at a cemetery a few miles north of Greensburg. Can someone in the area tell me if they have seen these graves or perhaps knows about the families. In 1929, at a special Memorial Day service, a wreath was placed on these graves, and the info I have is from the service.
I am trying to prove that Capt. Robt., wife Elizabeth, is not son of David, as some lists show, but instead Robert, b. 1740, died 1782, wife Suzanna, is. I do not know if he was in the Revol. He died just 2 yrs after Samuel, in 1782. His wife, Suzanna, died in Allegheny I think, and his dtrs mard.a Sinclair (St. Clair?) and a Torrance.
My entire family was in Westmorland, Hempfield, and it's pretty hard to study from Kansas.
There is a fly in the ointment and that is the fact that the childrens names in the Petition for Care of Minors I received from Greensburg( another person pointed out), are the same names listed as Capt. Roberts heirs in 1813 with one exception-Ann. The married names of Saml's kids, however, are shown at time of the partition (Saml. died intestate), and several of the kids in Capt's. Will had already died at that time. No mard. names are shown in the Capt's will, but he has a Robt., Samuel, John and he left his land to John and Saml. Pretty confusing.
The land, also does not appear to be the same land, Capt.s on the Kiskimentas, and Sam'ls was in two parcels. Any help appreciated. Donna McKee S.

Greetings! I am seeking the family of Carl Sturgen McKee. He was born in Burnside Towship, PA, but left the state and moved to Washington State in the early 1920's. My info has it that he married a lady named Pearl and they had at least one daughter, Betty. She was born about 1927. I am trying to find out who she married and if she had any children! I would be a distant relative. I am very interested in discovering what happened to this little branch of the family. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Who has an accurate list of sons of David McKee, the emigrant at McKeesport, Pa.?

I feel fairly content I have made my connection to David McKee,d 1795, the Ferry Builder and father of John, founder of McKeesport. However, most lists I have of his sons say my Samuel is a possibility, but Saml died at ae.40. 15 yrs before Davids Will,so I wonder if there are any lists that show Saml., at Westmorland, Hempfield Twp with wife Margaret and all the other bros, except John and Thomas at McKeesport. Others would be David, Robert James, Margaret and Mary Peeples
Saml had a son, Saml Jr, and daughter,Nancy, both who mard. McConnels,, so I am looking for them also. Their son was James MCKee,b 1803, a tanner who moved a lot with his 12 kids, and he with wife Margaret Pierce, died in Freeport, Ill. He surely still has a lot of family there She was also from Westm.-Armstrong Co. Pa.was dtr. of Peter Pierce, and all the families intermarried often. James parents, Sam Jr. and Margaret, got Samls farm in 1814, but I feel certain the children shown for them is not correct. Nancy never shows up on any record I have, but they didn't show spouses on deeds back then.
Donna

I am looking for information on Washington McKee who was my Great-great grandfather. I understand that he lived in North side of Pittsburgh and was probably a politician, perhaps major, in the mid-nineteenth century. He may have been involved in glass production, specifically the McKee Glass Company. At some point he moved to Moon Twp. and on to Beaver County. If anyone has any information to share, I will be grateful.

James McKee and Amanda Heacock Columbiana, OH 1840-1900

I am trying to trace the descendants of James McKee who died in Shenango Twp., Beaver Co., PA in 1839. In his will he names his sons Charles, James, John, David and Hugh. David is my great-grandfather who moves to Pulaski, PA. Charles, John and Hugh seem to stay near Shenango and New Castle. James, sometimes James G., is my dilemma. In a deed selling some of the property in Shenango in 1845, James seems to have a wife Amanda M. The only James and Amanda I can find born about 1815-1825 are the couple who first appear in Columbiana Co., OH in 1840. I have not verified to my satisfaction, but there is a marriage for a James McKee and Amanda Heacock in Ohio about 1840. Following the censuses this couple have children Mary about 1841, Rosanna about 1844, Sarah E. about 1846, William F. in May 1848, Ella about 1852, and Carrie about 1867. William F., his wife Jane Doyle and family stay in Salem and/or Perry, Columbiana Co. until his death in 1918. His death certificate verifies that his mother's maiden name is Heacock. I cannot find any of this McKee family in the 1870 Census. In the 1880 Census James and Amanda are back in PA but in Lack District, Juniata County. I have not found any death records for James or Amanda. James' brother David's obituary in Feb. 1891 says his brother James McKee "of Huntingdon" survives. Is anyone else trying to trace any of this family, or can anyone tell me where a Huntingdon might be, especially somewhere near this western Pennsylvania-Eastern Ohio region. Thanks for any help.
McKee family from Shenango Twp. PA early 1800's

My great-grandfather David A. McKee was born in Shenango Twp. 08 Jan 1823, moved to Pulaski Twp., Lawrence Co. about 1837-1840 where he lived the rest of his life. He died in Pulaski 17 Feb 1891. In his obituary from the New Castle News of Feb. 18, 1891 it mentions that he was a brother of Charles McKee of this city (New Castle), Hugh A. McKee, of Shenango Township, and James McKee, of Huntingdon.

By looking at 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Shenango Twp. which was by then in Lawrence Co. I believe John McKee, b. about 1821 was probably also a brother. Hugh Anderson McKee born about 1826 was married to Sarah Lukens Iddings Dec. 12, 1844. Hugh A. and Sarah had children Hannah, Joseph, Rachel, Charles, Anna, Arabella/Elizabeth, Robert A. and David E. born between 1847 and 1863. Brother Charles was born about 1813, married Margaret [last name unknown]and had children James, Eliza, Alexander, John C., Caroline, David and Mary J. between 1839 and 1856. I have not been able to connect the correct brother James as there are so many James McKees in Pennsylvania, and the date of 1891 for his location in Huntingdon. I have no idea when he might have moved from Shenango. If John is also a brother as he appears to be he was born about 1821, married a woman named Elizabeth, had children James, Eliza, Mary and Nancy between 1848 and 1856. There was in the 1850 Census an unmarried Catharine McKee, 18 therefore born about 1832, living with Charles and his family. She is possibly a sister.

I have not yet traced the parents of these men, but suspect they might be children of the James McKee who was born in Ireland about 1771, came to America at age 22, about 1793, and bought 200 acres of land in Shenango Twp. This is the James McKee who is said to have married Rachel Whann about 1805-1806 and whose oldest son Samuel is said to have died when he was about 12. There were supposedly 11 children of this marriage, five of whom were still living in 1877 when the Pennsylvania history was written. I have misplaced the quote as to which history this is from. I would certainly like to correspond with anyone who might be researching any of these McKee families. Nancy Smith

Origin of Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Ireland

Can you help me identify the origin of the Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland?

DNA testing has ruled out a genetic relationship with the Keys family at Lifford, which first appeared in Ireland under Elizabeth I and settled there under James 1.

The first documented Keys in County Fermanagh is Hugh Keys born ca.1660 and died in 1733. A mention of a Widow Ki (or Kee?) on a 1720 survey suggests that the name may have evolved in that period.

Documentary sources suggest that Keys (as well as other commono names such as MacKey, MacKay, MacKee, MacKoy, Hughes, Hewson, Eason, MacHugh and McGee) may have been an anglicized form of the Celtic Mac Aoidha (or son of Aodh, meaning "fire," anglicized as Hugh). In light of this, it may be relevant that the first documented Keys in Fermanagh bore the christian name Hugh.

One family of McKee originated in Myrton-McKee, Penninghame, Wigton, Scotland and settled in counties Down and Antrim. This line appears to account for a large proportion of McKees in Northern Ireland.

Another branch of Scottish McKees in Ireland derives from John McKie of Larg, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright, descended from Sir Patrick McKie. This family settled in Derry.

MacHugh originated in Galway and spread into County Roscommon. The name is now frequent in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh.

The MacGee name in Ulster is either of Scottish, akin to MacDonnell (and thus ultimately Irish in origin), or is a from a Gaelic Irish group that lived on the Donegal and Tyrone borders. The early history of this branch is not known.

Finally, one source indicates that MacKee can also be a anglicization of Macan Caoich (coach = blind), and was used by the Oreilly of Breffney. This later evolved into Key(e)s.

Lastly, heraldry provides one further clue. The motifs on the Keys coats of arms found on gravestones in Fermanagh are common to many armorial bearings. However, one coat of arms in Scotland, that of the Aberach MacKay family, shows a strong resemblance. It has the lion rampant and hand in common with Keys arms, and also adds 10 fleur de lis on the outside of the shield. A relationship between the two is possible, but perhaps not probable.

Barring further documentary evidence, we must appeal to DNA to unravel this mystery. I invite males bearing the surnames McKee, McGee, McHugh, Hughes and variants of these to help solve the riddle by participating in DNA projects. Please contact me if interested.

Thank you.
Roy Keys

McKee - Keys connection (Down and Fermanagh, Ireland)

Through reading the material that Kevin McKee has accumulated on his website (http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/go/getpizza/mckee/) I have came to the conclusion that there may be a connection between the surnames McKee and Keys in Ulster. (Such a connection is mentioned in many sources, but without documentary proof.)

Many Keys trace their origins back to Fermanagh, in the region around Irvinestown. There the scent goes cold, and we have few clues about where the family originated. One tradition says that the Keys came to Ireland during James II, that the original name was MacKay (or similar) and that there may be connections with the Hamilton family and Killycrankie (the battle between James's and William's armies in 1688). The oldest known Keys in Fermanagh are a father and son named Hugh, both buried at Lisnarick, with approximate birthdates in 1660 and 1695. There is another John Key in the same plot, died in 1713, but we do not know the birthdate. The latter is the earliest date we have for an actual Keys association with Fermanagh, so we assume that they did not arrive in the area much before 1700.

On Familysearch.org I recently found a father/son named Hugh McKee, the latter born at Lisbane, in County Down, the former in Scotland, their dates coinciding with the Fermanagh dates. There is much in the history of this family to suggest that the two Hugh McKees moved west to Fermanagh at some point, changing their names in the process. Only the coat of arms seems to pose a problem, although the very fact that both families had coats of arms is tantalizing. The arms of the Keys family at Lisnarick have a rampant lion and two fleur de lis on the sheild, three crosses on the chief, a helmet, and a bare hand, open-palmed, on the crest, with the motto "Ne perii nec disperii".

For lack of documentary evidence, I then wondered if it is possible to confirm or disprove this hypothesis through documentary evidence. In checking the data in the Key(s), McKee, McGee, and MacKay surname projects at familytreedna.org, I noted a definite relationship, although the matches do not seem near enough to conclude a close relationship (the evidence suggest a common ancester perhaps 1000 to 2000 years ago, whereas we are thinking in terms of the last 400 years, give or take). However, it is possible that none of the testees among these non-Keys surnames descends from the Lisbane McKee family in County Down.

My question, therefore: If there are any males McKees who are descended from that family and who might be willing to participate in a DNA study at familytreedna.org, would they please come forward. I can explain how to proceed. Of course, even if there are McKees who do not have a known connection to Lisbane (near Saintfield, in County Down), it may nevertheless be of value to do the test, as this can help connect you to other McKee families.

I look forward to your response, and to your help in unravelling this historical riddle.

Sincerely,
Roy Keys
Montreal

I am searching for my gggrandparents, James Hamilton McKee and Rachel Green McKee, both of/near Glasgow, Scotland. They immigrated to New York City in the late 1880's with 10 of their children, some of whom were named Barbara, Mary, John and James. My greatgrandfather, Joseph Dunn McKee, their 11th child, was born in Hell's Kitchen, NY in 1891. He later married Clara Louise Sloan and had Joseph Donald McKee and my grandfather, William Sloan McKee. I am at a dead end on information about James and Rachel. I have included a photo of James with several men that I don't know. It was taken in Scotland around 1880, before he immigrated to the US. If anyone can help me with this, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

VEESY MCKEE PIERCE

Lately, someone asked for infor. on these above families. About 1740, Saml McKee md. Margaret ? and lived in Hempfield Twp,. Westmo. Co. They had 7 child. In 1780, Saml was killed; their 7 children were in Orphans Court, Hannastown, (one son was Saml. Jr.) petitioners, Robt. and David McKee, asking to sell a tract of line for support of kids.
Ab. 1785, Margaret md. John Veesy and I guess they remained on the McKee place until it was sold in Partition in 1814. Saml. McKee, my line, and a "John" McKee bought it. (I would like to know if anyone has Nancy McConnel listed as Saml's wife, and her bro, John McConnel, as James bro-in-law) Margaret and John Veesy had a son, John, 2 dtrs martha & (cant recall) AND they marrd. Peter and Joseph Pierce. Peter and Martha's one dtr, Margaret, many sons, md. my James McKee, son of Marg & Saml,Saml Jr.,-so both James and Margaret Pierce are grandchildren of Margaret McKee Veesy.
Our family has tried for years to learn the maiden name of Margaret.
We lean toward Robison, maybe Wilson.
Let me hear from you.
Samuel McKee & Martha......? James Mckee/Lydia Todd

I think that I have worked every Mckee.Mackey etc on the board in the past several years. I keep coming back to these McKees. I think these Mckees are connected in someway to the McCoys...different variations of names

It is possible that James McKee born c1726 in Irelland (lived in Pa.) married c1753 to Lydia Todd and died 4-26-1778 in Rockbridge,Va.. Lydia Todd McKee died 1812 in Mercer Cty. Ky. Lydia moved to Kentucky after 1782. She was the d/o William Todd. James was the s/o William McKee and Elizabeth Todd.
James and Lydia had Samuel, Robert, Alice; William; John; Martha; Mary. I don't remember how many times and where I have posted but perhaps by this time I will receive some additional information.

I have a William McCoy of Rockbridge who married a Mary....UNK in Rockbridge. He was born c1754. He had a sister Mary born c1758 who married a Robert Cleghorn in Rockbridge,Va. on 12-02-1783. I have a cousin who is also checking this family. William had a brother John in Rockbridge and William had a son Edmond born 1783-4 in Rockbridge,Va. and there was an Archibald there in 1783 who did not live there but he paid tithes. Possibly the son of Samuel & Martha or James & Lydia. I have another cousin looking for information on a Samuel and James B..
