I have a 1983 memoir on my husband's McKenna family born in Ireland:
John b.Nov 1854; d.27 Jul 1913 San Francisco
James b.abt 1852 (brother);
Catherine b.1853,d.1934San Francisco(sister)

JOHN MCKENNA had cousin living in PA - a teacher named SISTER THEODORE. We do not know if the cousins were McKennas or not and I have not been able to find Sister Theodore. I would like to find info on these folks. The memoir also mentions a "WILL KEARNEY". Will was a nephew to a John Delahanty and lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey around 1934. John Delahanty's half sister "Catherine" married JOHN MCKENNA and Will was the son of one of Catherine's sisters but we don't know the sister's name. Do we have any connections here?
Hello
I have PA connections with my McKenna family.
Do you know your grandfather's wife's maiden name??
There are a couple of possibilities in PA in 1930.
I have full access to ancestry.com and would gladly look things up for you.
Do you know his middle name or his mother's name? There are about 25 possibilities in 1920 census near Pittsburgh.
My PA McKenna's come through the mother so their names are not McKenna, but I believe there were "McKenna" cousins there, as well.
Let me know if I can help. sarah.broadbent1@gmail.com

Mr. McKenna,

Do you happen to know if Bernard had a sister named Mary?

My gg Grandmother, Mary McKenna, married John Henderson in 1846 in a Catholic parish in Errigal Trough. I'm under the impression that John came from Aughnacloy. She and John came to Pittsburgh, PA, where my Great Grandfather, James Alexander Henderson was born in 1851. James kept a diary of a trip that he and his wife took to Ireland in 1897. They visited with his Aunt Catherine McKenna McMahan in Glaslough on Loch Amy, in County Monaghan.

Other than that I know nothing about either family. If you can help, I'd very much appreciate it.

Jim Foggin
Knoxville, TN
My ggg grandparents, Bernard and Mary McKenna, came from the Parish of Clogher, County Tyrone. They arrived in NYC on May 1, 1846, en route to Providence. With them were children Betsy (b abt 1826), Peter, my gg great (b abt 1830), Ann (1831), Sally (1831), John (1834), Margaret (1835), Pat (1837) and Lawrence (1843). Son, Bernard, was born on board. There was also a John (1826) with them, who might have been a son, or perhaps a nephew. There is much more to write, if you are interested.

Found these listings in the Price & Lee Co.'s city directory for Harrison, Kearny, East Newark, Arlington, North Arlington --

1938 directory:
Marie M. McKenna m. Harold M. Boxill (p. 679; Ancestry image 343)

1940 directory:
Gertrude C. Lyons m. George McKenna (p. 632; Ancestry image 317)
Mary M. McKenna m. James J. Macfie (p. 688; Ancestry image 345)
Cecilia M. Duffy m. Joseph McKenna (p. 377; Ancestry image 186)

The women are then listed under the man's surname in the same directory. The directories also list if someone moved and tells where they moved to, such as: McKenna, Vincent C removed to Belleville.

Hope this is helpful to someone.
Jo

Looking for any information on Thomas MCKENNA b. abt. 1801 in Ireland and his wife Mary b. abt. 1807 in England. They were living close to the river at 924 Suffolk, Philadelphia in 1868. He was a tailor. I believe the following people were his children. Thomas Jr, John, Joseph, Michael, Mary and Anna. Micahel was living with Thomas & Mary in 1860. In 1869 Thomas, Thomas Jr, John and Joseph were all living at 924 Suffolk . Anna was living with Thomas & Mary in 1870 along with her husband William Henry KEARNEY b 1838, Ireland. Anna appears to be the youngest, born in 1847 in England. Thus, Thomas & Mary were married and immigrated after 1847 but before 1860. I hope this rings a bell for someone!

The first thing that came to mind would be to try and find marriage certificates of the daughters and any death certificates of all to see where in Ireland they were from, since they all state "Ireland" as place of birth in the 1850 census.

Assuming that the Catherine McKenna (70 yrs old), is John's mother... maybe Bridget is Catherine's sister and McElroy is Bridget's married name...? I'm also assuming that Owen McElroy (21 yrs old), is Bridget's son...?

I noticed (on Ancestry) that on the "Search Results" page for John McKenna, that Ancestry has transcribed his birth year as 1795, but his age on the actual census page states 35 yrs old. You might want to tell Ancestry about this. Good luck in your researching.

Kathleen

James D McKENNA

James D McKenna was born in 1901. Not sure of Father or mothers name. Went by my Grandmother's (Catherine Horning) information who didn't like to share information about my mothers birth (August 16, 1926). My grandmother was never married to James, they had a relationship(don't know how long)Catherine was from Natrona Penn. and I believe she was working as a nurse for the family. My mother was raised by her grandmother(Kathryn(Bussick)Horning) in Natrona until she was 5 or 6 and then moved to Missouri to be with her mother. She never met her father. She passed in May 1986 and with my grandmothers passing I would like to know if the facts I have are true. Catherine met James D McKenna in the mid 1920's when she was working for the McKenna family. James was born in Penn. in 1901 (by my mothers birth records). The info. my gradmother gave was his parents were Mary (O'Brien) Mckenna of Dublin Ireland and James McKenna of Dublin Ireland. If anyone has any information about James D and family I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Kathy

I am looking for any information on McKenna's and/or Dunphy's in the Peake Station, Johnson River, Fort Augustus area of P.E.I. My grandfather (John McKenna) was born there around 1894 to Ann Jayne Dunphy and Francis McKenna. My grandfather moved to Boston in his youth. I know my GG Grandparents were John Dunphy and Elizabeth Webster who were born in Johnson River (1841) and Fort Augustus (about 1845) respectively. Both GG grandparents died in Peakes Station.

Delia McKenna Ballinrobe Ireland

Hi Listers,
I'm looking for a needle in a haystack!. I'm hoping to find info on a Mary (May) Kenny. Mary was the recipiant of a small payout in the will of John King, the 2 time Medal of Honor winner in the US Navy. John (B/1862 Ballinrobe Ireland....D/1938 Hot Springs Ark.) John married Delia (McKenna) Holland a widower late in life and she had 2 daughters. In the will one is mentioned (Maggie King Joyce) and he states that he didn't know her married name. The probate lists a payout to May that matches what the will says so I'm assuming that May is the unknown daughter.
Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Pat
Tbrd35@Hotmail.com

William,
I wish I was certain we were following leads for the same family, but it is not clear. There were many McKenna's who came to RI in the 19th century. Errigal Trough, mostly in County Monaghan, but also in County Tyrone, emptied out of McKenna's on their way to RI, PEI, and other places. And today, there are still so many McKenna's in Monaghan that to distinguish one from another, they are nicknamed by families they intermarried with. For example, my Peter McKenna (1828-1872), son of Bernard and Mary, married Catherine Duggan, of Monaghan. In Monaghan today, there are McKenna's who are nicknamed 'Duggan' because of intermarriage long ago.
Send me your email address and I will sign you on to my ancestry.com tree. I would also like to see your tree.
Thank you.
Ray McKenna
rjmck250@comcast.net

McKenna's in New South Wales & Queensland Australia

I am trying to trace my McKenna family history. Here are my details as I know them.

Charles Bernard McKenna (my ancestor) born Emyvale in Co. Monaghan approx. 1842. Son of Ross McKenna & Mary McKenna (also her maiden name). From letters that we have, we know that Charles had a sister Catherine who died in 1912 and is buried with her parents in Errigal Truagh, County Monaghan. Also from these letters we know that Catherine had at least three daughters and a son (maybe more than one son). Her daughter that wrote the letters is Mary A McKenna (same name again!). This Mary McKenna emigrated to Paterson, New Jersey, USA in 1915 to live with her widowed sister who had a son 8 years old at the time.

Charles Bernard McKenna emigrated to Australia (not sure when) and married Mary Fallon in 1870 in Brisbane. Not long after they moved to Stanthorpe Queensland. They had two sons Joseph Charles (1872) & Charles Patrick (my ancestor born 1880).

Charles Patrick married Elizabeth Darcey in Stanthorpe. Sometime in the 1920s they moved to Sydney, NSW with their two children.

It seems that they had relatives in Sydney, because of another letter in our possession shows Charles Patrick visiting a convent to see an old teacher of his (in 1904). He was with his female cousin at the time.

Also an electoral roll in 1936 in Sydney shows my McKennas living very closely to a Jeremiah McKenna and his wife. Jeremiah appears (from the NSW BDM index) to be the son of Patrick McKenna & Jane Kennedy.

Mary McKenna also wrote of an Aunt Rose that also emigrated to Australia.

If any of these names seem familiar, please answer back.
Regards,
Karen W

Hello -
I noticed your post and so I thought I'd try a connection although my time frame is much earlier than yours with the Mckenna/Russell connection. I have been stuck on this part of my tree for over 40 years! I apologize if this is a dead end -

My GGmother was Mary or Maria Theresa Mckenna born Dec 25, 1839 in Scotland supposedly in a castle near Edinburgh - daughter of an unknown Russell (Ireland) and unknown Mckenna (Scotland). Mary Theresa's siblings were John/Jhon, Elizabeth (1850), Alice (1825) who supposedly was engaged and her fiance was bitten by a dog and died before they could marry, and Helen nicknamed (Nell) who married Will Gallagher (had 3 children Edwin, Helen and George)

although this is information my Grandmother gave me when I was 13 years old - I've never been able to prove any of it dating back past my GGrandmother. My Aunt was told that our GGrandmother was born in a castle and that GGGrandmother Russell worked for Queen Victoria - again can't find a connection -

Mary Theresa Mckenna married Charles P. Unger and settled in Missouri for many years. They had children Pauline Bertha (1870), Clara E. (1874) and Ranold James (1876)
Later, she married Harry Eugene Havekluft on 7/21/1883 in Pueblo colorado and had one more child, my grandmother Pearl Elizabeth Havekluft (1886)
Thanks for your reply; that sounds like a good next step for me.

My SLAVIN family had two more MCKENNA's- Harmon & Frank- unrelated to the Providence MCKENNA's, who marry into the family in Omaha, NE forty-some years later; the Irish immigrant community must have been a close one.

1850 Census, Providence, RI - John & Ann, Mary A. McKENNA

In the 1850 Census for Providence Ward 1, John & Ann MCKENNA and daughters Catharine, Ellen, & Sarah are listed; with the family next door is another McKenna girl, Mary A., 10 years old.

The neighbors are my relations, SLAVINS and MCELROYS. Mary A. MCKENNA is living with 60 year-old Bridget MCELROY in 1850, and still living with her ten years later in the 1860 Providence Ward 1 Census.

I'm hoping to find what the connection is between the MCELROY and MCKENNA families.
