Genetic genealogy continues to play an ever more important role in determining familial relationships. The tiny portion of the entire DNA molecule – called yDNA – is passed from father to son nearly unchanged for many generations. This means that all male McKinneys who are descended from (for instance!) Mordecai McKinney of early New Jersey would have the same yDNA pattern. And all male McKinneys who are descended from Charles McKinney (who m. Marianne Chastain) would also match each other but NOT match the descendants of Mordecai. And so forth . . . .

Genetic genealogy in conjunction with traditional paper genealogy is a very powerful tool.

Although the testing seems quite expensive it can give results not gotten any other way. I know that I broke through a 30-year brick wall with the test.

There is no 'reason' for the name change of McKenney to McKinney. I found a Bible with entries about 1820 - 1840 and the name all within the same family was spelled various ways.

People simply weren't very particular about spelling. One branch of my family spells it McKinney; we spell it McKenney; my grandfather's nephew started spelling it MacKenney.

This is my family line! We thought Travis was the first McKenney in America, but I've done some research to show that his parents were William and Winifred McKenney.

Travis married a Betsy Pollard, and her father fought with Washington during the revolutionary war. I've got some documentation, but I've moved recently, and will look for it soon. I am decended from their son Pollard. Please feel free to email me.

I'm looking for info in locating my aunt. Her name is/was Madeline Jean McKenney & was born abt 1953 in VA. She went into the military in abt 1977. Upon completing boot camp she was sent to CA. She was last heard from in 1978 when a letter, unopened, was returned to my mother, whom my aunt had kept in touch with. No one has heard from nor seen her since. Would appreciate any help in finding info or suggestions as to where to look---can't find in any databases available through Ancestry--do not have a SSN to try & help locate.

Looking for the parents of my Great Great Great Grandmother, Nancy McKenney, who married Francis Wideman. They lived in the McCormick SC area, had several children, Mary WIdeman (who is my Gr Gr G-ma...she married John Douglas Bowick), Lucinda Wideman (who also married a Bowick), they had several other children also. I have heard that Nancy was full blooded cherokee or possibly blackfoot, but have not been able to confirm this as of yet. I know Nancy was born in Georgia (according to one census I found) and I believe she has a sibling named Orry, listed as a female on the census. On the 1850 census lists Nancy as Mulatto, which I have learned that is what they used for indians, and this attaches her to Francis Wideman. I am attaching the documents I have found so far. Any help is appreciated. I am stuck. Thank you,

Abraham & Betsey McKenney / McKinney of NH ca 1800 - 1874

Seeking any info of so named subjects. Known towns where they lived are Londonderry, Derry and possibly Hudson, NH.

According to Betsey's headstone she was b. Sep. 1, 1807 & d. Nov. 6, 1874. I cannot find Abraham's stone.

In front of Betsey's stone are those of her ?son's??, Sgt William Hambleton McKinney who died in 1864 and Pvt Andrew Jackson McKinney who died in 1865 both in the Civil War. Note different spelling of their surname.

Next to Betsey's stone is that of Walter Edwin McKenney, son of Abraham & Betsey died 1862 age 29 yrs.

Another possible son who is buried next to Betsey is Charles Ellsworth McKenney 1831 - 1899.

All are in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry, NH.

Questions:
1. Are William & Andrew in fact their sons?

2. Did Abraham & Betsey have any other children other than above named ones?

3. Are there any descendants?

4. Do any of the above connect to George W. McKenney
1829 - 1912, served in Civil War & who married Melinda A. and was the father of Herbert G. McKenney 1874 - 1937 and Julia F. McKenney Chase 1868 - 1963?

There is a record in the Richmond County, VA Marriages of George Thrift to Elizabeth McKenny 7 January 1788. It is very likely but not definite that it refers to this George Thrift (son of Job Thrift):

Does anyone have vital details on this Elizabeth McKenney, particularly date of death? I see some other info from Richmond court proceedings of ~1828-30 which suggests that when he died in 1800 this George Thrift may have left a widow named Jane, rather than Elizabeth, (possibly a Northen, or remarried a Northen), and that his last 3 kids
(if not all 4) may have been Jane's rather than Elizabeth's. I'm looking for evidence confirming or contradicting this.

I'm more familiar with the Thrift side of the family; can you give me some info on a couple generations of Gerrard(3) McKenney's ancestors & descendants? I'm particularly interested in locations; others of Sarah's siblings moved out of the area so I wonder if she did too?

Also there are a couple other McKenney / Thrift marriages. I'm interested in how these are connected on the McKenney side. Is there a good McKenney family tree posted?

I am not sure how much help I can give there is a Charlie Mckinney on my family tree they were from Buenavista Georgia I have not been able to locate any information on him most of the migrated to New york,New jersey and the Carolina's do you obitutary with some family members name where was his 1st wife from. There is 3 William Mckinney 's on my tree one of which was my father he died in 1970.

I am a decendant of McKenney's who came from Ireland to the east coast abt 1850-51. 6 brothers, 1 sister. Not sure of 3 of the 7 names, nor who nowadays/living is related to the other siblings... outside of me being decended from Thomas McKenney, 1 of the 6 brothers.

Maybe we're related...maybe not. So hard to know these days.

Harold E. McKenney was born in Missouri on 15 Feb 1908; his mother's maiden name was 'Couloy'. This information is from the California Death Index found online at Ancestry.

According to St. Louis, Missouri birth records (also online at Ancestry) he was born on 15 Feb 1908, his father was Edw. B. [Benjamin] McKenney b. in Illinois; his mother was Daisy born in Missouri. The births of his two sisters are also recorded in the St. Louis records.

I also think that Helen M. McKenney m. [unknown] Taylor. You might look in Londonderry, New Hampshire Vital Records: 1722 – 1910. It might be that Helen’s line would have more information about her McKenney family.

Andrew J. McKenney m. Angeline Boyce ca 1862 but he died in the Civil War. She m2 Lemuel Braley in late 1869 but then Angeline d. in the fall of 1870. It is possible that Ida who was 9 yo and living with Betsey in the 1870 census could have been a daughter of Andrew and Angeline. But I have no proof of that.

According to the 1880 census for this family, Lydia was the daughter of Melinda but not the daughter of George. So it would have been Melinda’s second marriage and by the looks of it also George’s since the first listed McKenney children were born in NH at the same time as Melinda’s children were b. in VT (see the 1860 census above).

There is no way to know from the above census records whether or not George W. McKenney was another son of Abraham and Melinda or not. The 1840 census shows that they had three boys in the household and the ages are right for being George b. ca 1831, Walter b. 1832 and Charles b. 1834. Perhaps the obit for either Abraham or Melinda would name all their children.

We are on to something here. Cowan is a family name passed down for generations. I have a cousin George Cowan MacKenney which was also my Great Great Grandfathers name. We must be related. My branch of the family changed the spelling of our name to MacKenney. The name Cowan is too much of a coincidence not to have a connection. I think it was the maiden name of one John Samuel McKenney's wife.

Hi, I just sent a note to Tina Cunningham. We are decendents of the Nova Scotia McKenney's. We settled on Negro Island in the late 1700's coming from Albany New York after the Reveloution. Clarence is a family and the middle name of my uncle Don. Our branch of the family changed the spelling of the name to MacKenney but I am not sure when. I am going to get more information and send it to you. My Grandad had two brothers move to the Boston area late 1800's or early 1900's. I am sure one of them was Clarence.

My grandad was the son of Leonard MacKenney who I think was the son of George Cowan MacKenney (or McKenney). My cousin George Cowan MacKenney has a lot of information on the family history.
