Origin of Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Ireland

Can you help me identify the origin of the Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland?

DNA testing has ruled out a genetic relationship with the Keys family at Lifford, which first appeared in Ireland under Elizabeth I and settled there under James 1.

The first documented Keys in County Fermanagh is Hugh Keys born ca.1660 and died in 1733. A mention of a Widow Ki (or Kee?) on a 1720 survey suggests that the name may have evolved in that period.

Documentary sources suggest that Keys (as well as other commono names such as MacKey, MacKay, MacKee, MacKoy, Hughes, Hewson, Eason, MacHugh and McGee) may have been an anglicized form of the Celtic Mac Aoidha (or son of Aodh, meaning "fire," anglicized as Hugh). In light of this, it may be relevant that the first documented Keys in Fermanagh bore the christian name Hugh.

One family of McKee originated in Myrton-McKee, Penninghame, Wigton, Scotland and settled in counties Down and Antrim. This line appears to account for a large proportion of McKees in Northern Ireland.

Another branch of Scottish McKees in Ireland derives from John McKie of Larg, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright, descended from Sir Patrick McKie. This family settled in Derry.

MacHugh originated in Galway and spread into County Roscommon. The name is now frequent in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh.

The MacGee name in Ulster is either of Scottish, akin to MacDonnell (and thus ultimately Irish in origin), or is a from a Gaelic Irish group that lived on the Donegal and Tyrone borders. The early history of this branch is not known.

Finally, one source indicates that MacKee can also be a anglicization of Macan Caoich (coach = blind), and was used by the Oreilly of Breffney. This later evolved into Key(e)s.

Lastly, heraldry provides one further clue. The motifs on the Keys coats of arms found on gravestones in Fermanagh are common to many armorial bearings. However, one coat of arms in Scotland, that of the Aberach MacKay family, shows a strong resemblance. It has the lion rampant and hand in common with Keys arms, and also adds 10 fleur de lis on the outside of the shield. A relationship between the two is possible, but perhaps not probable.

Barring further documentary evidence, we must appeal to DNA to unravel this mystery. I invite males bearing the surnames McKee, McGee, McHugh, Hughes and variants of these to help solve the riddle by participating in DNA projects. Please contact me if interested.

Thank you.
Roy Keys

Elizabeth MILROY McKEY applied for a widow's pension and, in part, here is what the extract reads, typos included (I do not have the actual file):
"On this twentieth day of January in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty seven ... in the County Court of the County of Chemung Elizabeth McKey a resident of the Town of Veteran in the County of Chemung and said State of New York aged Eighty two years, ... make the following declaration ... That she is the widow of Alexander McKey late of the Town of Erin ... that her husband resided during said War of the Revolution about ten miles south of the City of Albany ... that her said husband served between one and two, or nearly two years as a Fifer and also as a Sergeant in the first New York Regiment commanded by Colonel Van Schaack. That her said husband died in the Town of Erin in the County of Chemung, aforesaid on the third day of June Eighteen hundred & thirty. ... That she was married to the said Alexander McKey on the Eighteenth day of October Seventeen hundred and Eighty by the Rev'd John Young a Presbyterian Clergyman at Princetown Schenectady County NY that the following persons were present at her marriage, to wit: her sisters Jannet, and Ann, Thomas Gifford and wife, Archibald Van Schaack."

Note: I descend through Elizabeth's sister Mary MILROY McWILLIAM; they were the daughters of John and Elizabeth (poss. McCRACKEN) MILROY who immigrated from Scotland in 1774. I would especially like to know when and where their parents died.
Hi Shirley,
Good to hear from you, and if your McKey was buried in Willow Grove, she must be related to my McKeys. Where do you live? There are a lot of McKey descendants in Lavaca Co. and other parts of Tex. Have you been in touch with any of them? Right now I am so busy, our daughter is going to be married here at home in 2 weeks and I am really out of touch with all of the genealogy stuff. I am not familiar with your g grandmothers' name at all but some how I THINK I recall the name Self. Could be wrong. I won't be much help to you until this wedding is over, then I'm leaving on a trip for a week.
I know there was a McKey reunion this summer, I've never been to one.
Let me hear from you regarding these questions and we'll go from there. I can tell you that I don't have a lot of documented information, regarding the Mckeys, and the searching I did came up with very little. There is some information that was handed down to me, that is confusing and not documented. I did make contact with other MacKey/McKey descendants, there are lots out there but if you and I are looking for the same family we need to stick together and see what we can come up with. John Robert McKey b.1861 was in the 1900 Lavaca Co. Tx census with wife Eva Eliza and 4 children. John Robert's father was Thomas J. McKey--in the 1880 census Thomas J.'s widow Sarah 50yrs, son John 19, Thomas j.17, and L. Sarah was 13yrs. Sarah born S.C. and her children were all born in Ala.. If your Luvneia (is that spelling correct?) was born about 1859, could she have been a sister to John Robert? My email address- v_neugebauer@hotmail.com
Vickie

HI: I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON A MCKEY FAMILY. MY GREATGRAND MOTHER WAS LUVNEIA MCKEY. SHE MARRIED JAMES H BRISCOE 10/01/1879 IN LAVACA COUNTY TX. SHE IS BURIED IN WILLOW CREEK CEMETARY IN LAVACA COUNTY TX. SO FAR ALL I KNOW ABOUT HER IS THAT SHE WAS BORN IN 1859 IN ALABAMA. I DON'T KNOW WHERE. I HAVE BEEN TO THE GRAVE WHERE SHE IS BURIED. AND SHE IS SHOWN IN THE 1880 CENSUS IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF JAMES H BRISCOE. APPARENTLY SONETHING HAPPENED TO JAMES AND SHE REMARRIED TO AN EZEKIEL D SELF. SHE HAD FOUR CHILDREN WITH JAMES BRISCOE AND ONE CHILD WITH EZEKIEL SELPH. ANY CLUE AS TO WHO HER PARENTS WERE WILL HELP. MY NEXT STEP IS TO GET HER DEATH CERTIFICATE FROM TX NOW THAT I KNOW WHAT HER MARRIED NAME WAS WHEN SHE DIED IN 1947.

I haven't worked on the McKeys in a while and I need to review. I do recall that some in this line were supposed to have lived in Lowndes Co. but I could never locate them there.

We have letters from "Phinny" from the civil war to his sister - Sue. He mentions that he is in the "Army of the Cumberland" - 31st Indiana. We just heard today from an individual on the web who has been researching the 31st Indiana that there is only one Phineas in the 31st - a Phineas McKey. So perhaps we are related. We are descended from Sue and A.T. Kelly (whom we believe to be Allen Thomas Kelly based on another entry on ancestry.com regarding his second wife). Sue is from Indiana, etc. Please respond - hope you get this message. Marsha Bise marshabise@home.com

McKEE IRE to NYC 1840s

Hello,
I'm interested in the family of:

Andrew McKEE, born Red Hill, Co Cavan, IRE about 1833 to John & Ann ?. He came to NYC about 1840.
Married Mary HOGAN (She was born about 1837 in NY to Michael HOGAN & Johanna NOONAN.) Andrew was a sailmaker and lived on Spring St in Manhattan. Andrew died 30 Dec 1898 in Manhattan. Mary died 15 Oct 1904 in Manhattan.
Their children:
1. Michael McKEE born about 1856 in NYC. Don't know what became of him.
2. John McKEE born about 1858 in NYC, may have married a Florence ?
3. Thomas McKEE, born about 1860 in NYC. was a sailmaker in 1880.
4. Andrew McKEE born Aug 1866 in NYC. He was a letter carrier for Post Office. married Margareth ? Lived around 176th St. in 1900.
5. James McKEE born about 1868 in NYC. Was a stone polisher, lived with his mother in 1900 on 110 St.
6. Edward McKEE, born about 1871 in NYC. living at home with his mother in 1900 on 110 St.
7. Florence McKEE born about 1875 in NYC. She married a man with the surname WALSH.
8. Mary McKEE born Jun 1876 in NYC. She married William MacINTOSH after 1900. Dies 1931.
9. George A. McKEE born 30 Sep 1877 in NYC. He too was a letter carrier for Post Office. He married Margaret M. THORNTON. In 1920 living E 178 St.
10. Josephine McKEE born Jul 1880 - was living with her mother in 1900 at 110 St.
I'd like to share info with descendants of this family. They are hard to trace after 1900 - as there are so many McKEEs in NYC and they would have scattered after their mother died.
There's also evidence that Andrew had a brother named Thomas McKEE (a coachmaker - also lived on Spring St)
Then too - there was another Andrew McKEE living in Brooklyn who is related in some way (both are buried in the same grave in Calvary Cemetery)

Terry / Glen Rock, NJ

Hi
Just looking over the message boards for and saw this message. I am still trying to find info on thomas Mckey and Sarah Polk. They were the parents of my Great Grand mother Eliza Luvenia Mckey. I am going to Lavaca county this weekend and hope to find more information on this part of the family tree. I found that they were from Alabama and believe that she was a relative of President Polk but have not made the tie yet. If she was, it was not child as he had no children but did have nieces. If you are still interested, please e mail me.

Alex(ander) McKEY abt 1758 - 1830 Chemung/Tioga Co, NY

Widow was Elizabeth, probably b abt 1776, lived to at least 1836. I've identifed 4 children:
John A b abt 1795 - 1870 or aft, m Mary H unknown
Anna A b 9 Mar 1796, m Elijah SHOEMAKER
Margaret b abt 1801
Agnes b abt 1805 m James (Jacobus) SHOEMAKER

Yes, Elijah and James were brothers, sons of Isaac Shoemaker and Mary SWARTWOUT. They came from Delaware Twp, old Northampton Co, PA.

I don't know where in NY McKey came from. During the Revolution I think he served from Ulster County NY. On 1880 census daughter Agnes stated that both her parents were from Scotland but I dunno about that - she may have meant New Scotland, Albany Co. I don't know where those children were born or if there were more, which is likely enough.
