I am researching the McKiee's of Canada - I believe originating from "McKie" in Scotland.
Last person I have is a John McKiee, b. in Quebec b. 1831 m. Eleanor Jackson - all of their children born in Simcoe, Ontario.
There is also an Eleanor McKiee listed as a widow who died in 1879- possibly his mother? (she also died in Simcoe and George Jackson McKiee - John's son) was listed as the informant of her death.

Hoping there is a connection or you can point me in another direction....
Thanks

How wonderful to hear from you!!!! I am a direct ancestor to you thru Susan Ann McKie. Her daughter Emily Emerson was my great grandmother. So George and Emily are half brother and sister. I'd be happy to share my photos with you. You have a direct ancestor that lives in Quebec and her name is Bonnie Miller and we found each other about 2 years ago. I've written her about you and she will most likely be in touch with you also.
Neither Bonnie or myself have been able to be sure which John West was George Arcibald's father. Would very much appreciate anything you'd like to share about George Archibald West. Can't wait to hear back from you. Here is my personal email address bahila1@msn.com and if you send me your email I can send the pictures to you. Thank you so much for your response. Rhea Gilbert

Hi!
I'm new to all this but I think we are related...
My great grandfather was George Archibald West, son of Susan-Ann McKie and John West of Ste-Foy, Quebec, Canada. (I now live in Minneapolis, close to Iowa, funny to see an Iowa connection with these ancestors!)
I unfortunately don't have anything to add to your McKie research but would love to see the photos of the West family that you mentioned. I can also complete the West family history post-George Archibald if you're interested...

You're welcome. Good luck and keep me posted. I noticed that there was a McKie in the MacKay dna project and he matched a cluster of MacKay's in the first 12 markers---that's too small a sample of markers to learn much but it is sufficiently encouraging that I can't imagine why that person hasn't tested more markers...25 or preferably 37 are needed to establish whether there is a close relationship. Remember--the person tested has to be a male bearing the surname MacKay or variant....y chromosome dna is passed father to son only.

Good luck.
MH

Kathleen,

There is a MacKay DNA project at Familytreedna.com. They have a public website where you can view their results. Just type MacKay into the surname search window on the home page of the website and when the next page comes up, click on MacKay project. On the next page, click on the link to the project's public page...If you don't have experience with reading DNA results, it may not make much sense to you but you can get in touch with the project administrator and see if she/he can give you a summary of what is being learned. There are a lot of participants and that's good. Clearly there are groups of people who are close matches to one another and these people presumably share their genealogical research with one another. If you have a male relative willing to join, it might be worth it...members get a substantial discount in price. Hope this helps...

Hi Kathleen,

In Dalmellington and Straiton the name was spelled McKie quite consistently. Further south, you sometimes see Mackie...I believe the spelling MacKay was more common in the Highlands. However, spelling was not standardized until the sometime in the 1800s, so you can't go strictly by that...It was sometimes just a preference of the registrar or clerk...Anyway, Clan MacKay was in the far north and west of Scotland and as I understand it, a great many of them were shipped out forcibly during the Highland Clearances. I don't know if dna studies have determined whether the McKie's and Mackie's in Ayrshire and Kirkcudbrightshire are distant relatives of the northern clan or whether they are a distinct line. You might keep an eye out for such a project. If you have a male relative with the surname MacKay, they might learn something from joining or starting a dna project that will shed light on such questions and help you find where your MacKay's were from. The idea would be to compare your results with McKie's and MacKay's who know where their ancestors lived a couple of centuries back...Best wishes. M Hastie

Hello-I am researching the same lines that you are! My direct ancestor is SUSAN ANN McKIE born Dec. 24, 1844 in Quebec, Canada she died Mar. 27, 1877 in Ste Foy, Quebec, Canada buried Mar. 29, 1877 in Mount Hermon Cemetery-Sillery-Quebec, Canada. Her first husband was WILLIAM ARNOLD EMERSON-they were married Mar. 20, 1866 in Ste Foy, Quebec Canada. He died Oct. 29, 1871 in Dunlap, Harrison Co., Iowa. Susan & William had 2 children-Emily Marinda Emerson (my great grandmother) Born April 20, 1868 in Dunlap, Harrison County, Iowa and Amelia Emerson born July 1, 1870-Dunlap, Harrison County, Iowa-She died shortly after her birth. After William died Susan moved back to Ste Foy, Quebec and married John West on Oct. 4, 1875 in Ste Foy, Quebec. They had a son George Archibald born Dec. 20, 1876 in Ste Foy, Quebec and christened Mar. 22, 1877 Susan dies 5 days after her son was christened from child birth complications. I have been corresponding with Bonnie Miller in Quebec and we have exchanged our research for these families. Just this last week I had research done in Scotland for JOHN MURRAY. Didn't get anything concrete but have a pretty good lead on who his father may have been. I have hit the proverbal brick wall trying to get information on when Robert McKie and wife Elisabeth died. Their last child John was born May 9, 1846 in Maddington, Nicolet County, Quebec. I'm currently researching Robert McKie and hopefully something will break soon. I was very fortunate to get information from a family Bible & photos from my great grandmother Emily Emerson's album and have photos of John Murray & Margaret Brackenridge, West family and Susan Ann McKie, John McKie, Alex McKie and several of John Murray's daughters. I'd be happy to share them with you. I'd very much like to hear what you have on these families. Hope to hear from you-Rhea Gilbert

Happy New Year,

This is a shot in the dark, based on the common name, William McKIE, and the common occupation, Mason.
Richard,

If you are still out there, I would like to get in touch with you. While going through old messages, I discovered that we are both descendants of George Lafayette Campbell and Sarah Beason. I would like to discuss and/or share info with you on these and related lines if possible. Way back when I posted this original message, it was in trying to determine any possible connection between Robert McKie of Rowan Co., NC and our McKies connected to the Beasons.

Hope to hear from you.

Randall Baker

No. I don't have a picture of him. He is described as having a wiry frame. He was about 5'10" and weighed between 130 and 140 pounds. After the Mexican War, he moved to Mexico and stayed there for two years. His daughter, Eva, married Samuel W. Walker and was living in Mexico during the early 1890s.

I am trying to track my family roots. My great grandfather John Mckie along with three other Mckie brothers were brought from Scotland on a ship that their father was the captain of. The story goes, their father ( the ships captain) set sail from Scotland with his four sons for an adventure ride. They ended up in St. Vincent. Three brothers stayed off in St. Vincent, while one brother went on to Grenada where he settled. Three of his brother's sons Walter, Cyril & Thomas joined that brother in Grenada, & they all settled in Grenada. Any info. or connections will be greatly appreciated.
VelmaMckie

Interested in further info about the family of Jean McKie who married Duncan McMurtrie at Dalmellington in 1772. Jean was the daughter of David McKie b 1708 at Straiton and Jean Graham who married at Dalmellington in the 1730s; David McKie,a mason, was son of Robert McKie of Dalmellington and Marion Ferguson of Straiton who married at Dalmellington in 1705. The records at Dalmellington are poor in the 1600s but there is a will for a William McKie at that place dated 1671, indicating a presence. There are many more records for McKie's at Straiton.

Would welcome contact anyone with interest in or knwoledge about these McKie's.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire no longer exists as a parish but it once included part of Castle Douglas, which you can find on a map. That places Kelton parish toward the southern end of the former Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire (pronounced Kirk-cue-bree-sheer--originally named for St Cuthbert, I've read). The southeast border of Dalmellington parish in Ayrshire abuts Carsphairn parish---at what used to be the northern border of Kirkcudbrightshire. I imagine Kelton was some 30 miles distance to the south of Straiton and Dalmellington. I can only guess about the ties between McKie families at that proximity; doubtless they connect up at some point and perhaps the common trade of masonry is a clue. I believe there was a regular mail post between Castle Douglas and Ayr that ran through Dalmellington in the 1800s so it was a natural route for people to travel.

Thanks for the post.

Good luck.

I ran by Walgreens today and copied it and will pick it up later today. Let me know where to send it.
I wish I could definitely tell you it is him but I can't.
It says McKie on the back and the original photo was made in Waco. I have a couple of other physicians in the family but they were not in the Waco area. If it is Doctor B. D. McKie, it was probably before he moved to Salado. The home he built is there still. I am pretty sure he was an uncle of my great aunt, Doris Killebrew Pressley Henley. Her parents were Burmah Messer Pressley and Edward Ward Tupper Pressley. I will send you two other pictures of McKie cousins. They are lovely young ladies. Maybe you will be able to connect the dots. Let me know if you figure it out. I'd really like to know.
Do you have any idea how to date a picture by the clothes worn in the picture?

He was a physician and I have a picture that may him with his medical bag and several other young men- possibly brothers, friends or classmates. I wish I knew for sure. If I could find another picture of Ben, I could compare. Do you know of one?
Also, do you know if any of the McKie went to Mexico to live? It seems like I had information at one time that said that but can't find it now. All is not lost because I am still going through things. I remember the name Kenneth Diaz also. Can't remember if it was a son and if it was don't remember the connection. Does this ring a bell with you?

c.

Interesting. It could be him. I'm not positive though. If you would like, I could send it to and possibly later, it could be verified. It's a neat picture. You can reply to me at cwolfeblrtx@yahoo.com if you'd like.
No word from Gaylor yet. I sure hope she is OK. I only know her through emails. She is a very helpful, sweet lady.
Origin of Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Ireland

Can you help me identify the origin of the Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland?

DNA testing has ruled out a genetic relationship with the Keys family at Lifford, which first appeared in Ireland under Elizabeth I and settled there under James 1.

The first documented Keys in County Fermanagh is Hugh Keys born ca.1660 and died in 1733. A mention of a Widow Ki (or Kee?) on a 1720 survey suggests that the name may have evolved in that period.

Documentary sources suggest that Keys (as well as other commono names such as MacKey, MacKay, MacKee, MacKoy, Hughes, Hewson, Eason, MacHugh and McGee) may have been an anglicized form of the Celtic Mac Aoidha (or son of Aodh, meaning "fire," anglicized as Hugh). In light of this, it may be relevant that the first documented Keys in Fermanagh bore the christian name Hugh.

One family of McKee originated in Myrton-McKee, Penninghame, Wigton, Scotland and settled in counties Down and Antrim. This line appears to account for a large proportion of McKees in Northern Ireland.

Another branch of Scottish McKees in Ireland derives from John McKie of Larg, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright, descended from Sir Patrick McKie. This family settled in Derry.

MacHugh originated in Galway and spread into County Roscommon. The name is now frequent in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh.

The MacGee name in Ulster is either of Scottish, akin to MacDonnell (and thus ultimately Irish in origin), or is a from a Gaelic Irish group that lived on the Donegal and Tyrone borders. The early history of this branch is not known.

Finally, one source indicates that MacKee can also be a anglicization of Macan Caoich (coach = blind), and was used by the Oreilly of Breffney. This later evolved into Key(e)s.

Lastly, heraldry provides one further clue. The motifs on the Keys coats of arms found on gravestones in Fermanagh are common to many armorial bearings. However, one coat of arms in Scotland, that of the Aberach MacKay family, shows a strong resemblance. It has the lion rampant and hand in common with Keys arms, and also adds 10 fleur de lis on the outside of the shield. A relationship between the two is possible, but perhaps not probable.

Barring further documentary evidence, we must appeal to DNA to unravel this mystery. I invite males bearing the surnames McKee, McGee, McHugh, Hughes and variants of these to help solve the riddle by participating in DNA projects. Please contact me if interested.

Thank you.
Roy Keys
