I'm looking for info on the McKinlay family. Peter McKinlay and his wife Agnes Frew Miller immigrated to the US in Sept. 1871. By Oct. 1871, they settled in Kansas. They brought 4 children with them - Peter Jr, Margaret, Jeannie, and Agnes. I believe that Peter Jr moved to Arkansas and had a family there. My grandmother is Margaret's daughter - Agnes Elizabeth McKay. Margaret married Benjamin Franklin McKay. I would appreciate any info/photos on this branchof the McKinlays. I have Scottish info about Peter and Agnes marriage, Peter's birth and HIS father, also a Peter McKinlay's birth. Thank you! I am writing a book about the ancestry. I am related to Matilda Helen GIBSON, who married James MCKINLAY in Chicago 21 October 1902. They had two children:

1 - daughter Margaret MCKINLAY (c 1904) who was working as a public librarian in 1930

2 - son James Duncan MCKINLAY (Oct 1905) who was working as a junior clerk in a finance office in 1930.

Robert Mckinlay m Isabella Middleman
They had a son Robert McKinlay 1832 who marr.Martha Thomson
March 1857
Witness to the marriage were George McKinley & Ellen Hardman(?) Some earlier records switch between e and a in McKinlay
although my line kept "McKinlay"
My Grandmother was Isobel McKinlay and my Father was named
Robert McKinlay Williams.
I hit a brick wall in Midlothian too, My family (proven) were there just pre 1800 some possible but not proven links earlier (using naming patterns)

Actually, I'm from the middle of Ohio and the only Gordon McKinlays I've come across live in Rexburg, ID & Rutherglen, VICTORIA, AU. Lots of LDS McKinlays in the Far West and Northwest US

On Mary Anne Robertson's Baptism record her parents are given as Robert Robertson and Aggness Wright. There is an error in the online NSW birth Registration number for Mary Anne (V1848214 48/1848 ROBERTSON MARY A ROBERT AGGNESS) as she is recorded as having been born 6 March 1845 and baptised 25 March 1945 in her baptism record. I am trying to find the profession and other information on my great grandfather, Hugh McKinlay, who married Hannah Wooler (or Wooller) in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1867. He was probably born in 1847.
He seems to have been absent when the censuses were taken in 1871 and possibly 1881.
Hannah lived with her mother Mary after she was married and her children - Harry and Pelimia (Amelia or Pamelia) - were born in about 1869 and 1870 respectively. Her daughter, my grandmother, had the three names above in successive census records. She married Arnold Arthur Robinson.

Edward is my great grandfather. My father is Keith Edward William, the middle bother of Morris and Stuart. My grandfather was Ivan? married to Mavis Hopgood.

I would be interested to know any of Edward's roots, too. I think Stuart has been trying to trace them.

I am looking for my grandfather. He was born around 1909 (I do not know where). He was on HMS Caradoc in 1934 when he was married to Constance Irene - his fathers name was George. My father was born in 1935 and he and his mother (without my grandfather) came out to New Zealand. I do not know what happened to my grandfather so if anybody can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi -Don't know if this helps but my father was William McKinlay (born Birmingham 1935) and came out to New Zealand in the 1940s. His father was also William McKinlay (Or McKinley). I do not know much about my grandfather so if you know anything it would be appreciated.

Hi Gordon, my maternal line is McKinlay. Established in Perth Scotland c1851 with James. Previously known in Girvan Ayreshire as James McAnnaly (try saying "McAnnaly" quickly, several times!) in the 1841 census. The family went through several spelling variations before McKinlay became the norm.

Update on my previous message.
George McKinlay and Sarah Devlin married 5th February 1875 at Shettleston, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
George McKInlay's parents were James McKinlay and Catherine McKinnon both born in Ireland.
George died 11th November 1934 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire and Sarah Devlin died 18th November 1923 also in Blantyre, Lanarkshire.
If this family is known to anyone out there, any information greatly appreciated.

It's been a while since I got a chance to do any more of this but I have got myself thoroughly stuck. My grandfather, John McKinlay was born in Bonhil. His father was Duncan from Campsie. His father was Francis. We have found his marriage certificate to Agnes Craig in 1867. From that we know his parents were Duncan McKinlay and Elizabeth ? who were dead by then. They were in the 1851 census but we can find out nothing else about them. They were in Neilston, Renfrewshire in the 1851 census.

We can't find out anything else about them at all? Any ideas?

Was your James Mckinlay married 3 times?
First wife unknown, second wife Mary McNeil, third wife Mary McConnell.

3rd wife Mary emigrated to New Zealand 1874 with 6 of her 9 children. Don't know what happened to husband James or the other children.

Hi Hamish, I'm interested in learning more about my families roots, My father John McKinlay and grandfather John McKinlay and his brother James McKinlay are all from the Clydebank area (Dalmuir & Duntocher). I think they have been about there since before the war until about 10 years ago (deceased). I never had much info about the past and would love to trace my roots back further than that. Any help would be appreciated.

Johnstone McKinlay and Annie Cameron McKinlay

Johnstone and Annie were brother and sister. He was born in the West Parish of Greenock on April 24th.1884 and Annie,also in the West Parish, on 6th Nov. 1882. They emigrated to British Columbia, Canada and died there in the 1970's. I have their family Bible with a wealth of family history going back in the 1780's including original documentation. I am told there was a sister who remained in Greenock. This Bible and the documents should be with the surviving relatives and I want to make contact so that this can be arranged.

Hi Hamish, I'm also the last in my family line. Most of my family are from Greenock but we traced the family tree back to Rathlin of the coast of Northern Ireland. Our family trait seems to be to alternate between James and John by generation. My dads name is Iain (gealic for John) and my Grampa was James (but everyone back home in Scotland new him as Hamish.

He is sadly missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Grace; his mother Janet; brother Sam (Muriel); his children, Tracey, Jane (Wade) and Jeanne (Colin); his grandchildren Matthew, Christine, Bryan, Sarah, Emily and Aaron; and many more of his extended family. Born in Scotland March 14th, 1934, he emigrated to Canada when he was 17 years old and settled in Hamilton, Ontario. He later re-settled in Vancouver, B.C. where he worked as an electrician for the IBEW and Houle Electric until his retirement in 1995. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 11th, 2000 at 7 p.m. in the Murrayville Hall, located at 21661 48th Ave., Langley, B.C. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.

Reseaching my CARNAHAN family and allied family connections. Hugh CARNAHAN married Mary McKINLAY (McKINLEY) bebore 1760 possibly in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or even Scotland or Ireland. Their children were born in USA, Baltimore Co, MD 1762-1774.

Hugh and Mary were my 5th G-Grandparents. Searching for their parents and siblings, and where they were born. One theory is that Hugh CARNAHAN was born in Aberdeen Scotland about 1730 and Mary McKINLAY(McKINLEY) was born in Baltimore, MD about 1732.

I descend through their son, Andrew CARNAHAN.

Donald McKinlay, born abt. 1835 on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, eldest son of Murdoch McKinlay, b. 1812 on the Isle of Skye and d. Feb 17, 1886 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and Christy Mary Graham b. 1815 on the Isle of Skye and d. Mar 27, 1902 in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Murdoch and Christy Emmigrated to Canada in 1841, with their 2nd son Duncan b. 1837 in Scotland. Donald was on a second ship with relatives the Grahams and Munros. A severe Atlantic storm separated the ships and Donald and his relatives ended up in Austrailia in 1841. Family stories say Donald was never reuited with his family and was brought up by the Grahams and Munros in Australia. Murdoch and Christy had 10 more children, born in PEI, and some of them moved out to Western Canada, settling in the Edmonton area of the Province of Alberta. My Mother, Rachael Anne McKinlay is the daughter of John McKinlay, the youngest child of Murdoch and Christy. We have put together a Family Tree of those who settled in Canada. If anyone knows anything about Donald and the Grahams and/or Munros we would greatly appreciate any leads that could be provided.

James married Henrietta Pilkington in 1880 in Manchester. I have struggled to get this information so far as different info comes up at different times.

I have no idea of their married names. Their sister Christina 1901 married a Mr Blackwood and emigrated to New Zealand.
