McKinney yDNA project information
Genetic genealogy continues to play an ever more important role in determining familial relationships. The tiny portion of the entire DNA molecule – called yDNA – is passed from father to son nearly unchanged for many generations. This means that all male McKinneys who are descended from (for instance!) Mordecai McKinney of early New Jersey would have the same yDNA pattern. And all male McKinneys who are descended from Charles McKinney (who m. Marianne Chastain) would also match each other but NOT match the descendants of Mordecai. And so forth . . . .

Genetic genealogy in conjunction with traditional paper genealogy is a very powerful tool.

Although the testing seems quite expensive it can give results not gotten any other way. I know that I broke through a 30-year brick wall with the test.

From now until the last day of 2009 the leading company that does surname-yDNA studies is having special pricing. We would welcome you or your male McKinney relative into the study.

You can go to the website www.ftdna.com or you can write me for details. I am happy to help in any way that I can. (I am a volunteer for the McK*nney surname project and do not get paid a single penny for enrolling you!)

Jody McKenney Thomson
Jmthomson at gmail . com
I am glad to hear you would be interested in participating with the McKinney DNA Study. Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is now having a special pricing on some of the tests including the 37-marker test which is $119 instead of $149. This is good til the last day of this calendar year. If you need assistance with the cost it may be possible to provide assistance in offsetting some of the expense. For more information about what the test is about and how it is conducted you can go to their web site http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McKinney/
let me know what you decide...
I am researching a McKinney line that started in Mo with the birth of Ernest around 1880. He moved to Wyoming and was married to a Cordelia from Arkansas and had one daughter and 2 sets of twins first set Edgar and Edna the other was Ethel and Erma. The census that showed he was born in Mo says fathers bp was Kansas and mother's bp was Ohio. Does any of this fit with yours? BTW, I live in Springfield, Greene Co., Mo so if you need any look ups here, I'd be willing to do some.

Thomas Anderson Mckinney

Hi,

I've been trying to track down when my great grandfather, Thomas Anderson Mckinney died. He was born in 1864 in Wyoming County, West Virginia (then Virginia). His parents were William A. McKinney and Sophia Howerton. He and his wife, Polly, and their kids moved from Barker's Ridge, WV to Lee County, Virginia between 1900-1910. He was still on the census in 1930 in Lee County VA. Polly died in 1927, but I have not been able to find when Thomas died. He was listed on the 1930 census as Mack Mckinney. I have also seen him referred to as Arnitte and Armistron. Any help anyone could give would be most appreciated.
Hi Catie,
Thank you! I'm very excited about my discovery, too! While in Ireland, I met with an historian/genealogist named Theo McMahon (pronounced muck-man). He gave me info on a Roger McKinney, Jr. who emigrated from Ireland and entered through the Charleston, S.C. port. This may be YOUR line!!!
Check it out if you have an Ancestry account. There is a book called "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772" by Jean Stephenson. Rev. Wm Martin (Presbyt.) brot 5 shiploads of settlers to America. In this book on pg 88: "11 Dec 1772 Granville Co., waters of Calhouns Creek...Roger McKinney, Jr...cert. 3 June 1773." There's a start for you, hopefully! (This is on land certificates.)

I had an awesome experience in Ireland. If you've never been, I highly recommend it. I found our line of McKinney's! Nothing on Terence so far, BUT, one of my experiences led me right to a man who looks just like my father John Eddie McKinney in Oklahoma. An older cousin of this man Tom, with tears in her eyes, said I looked just like her Granddad Samuel McKinney (who would have been the same age as our G/gf JT McKinney). I hope to make a CD soon (like Dana did when she went to Ireland). I found the area where the McKinney Clan settled when they arrived from Scotland back in the 1600's. They are in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Everything is McKinney there! I also learned about the name Terence (not Torrance). I can send you pictures, and more written info, through my regular email if you want. It's pmckinney56@yahoo.com.

Have you looked in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census for him? He should have been a six year old living with his parents in 1900.

Do you have information that tells you where he was born? In NY also? Did he have a middle name that he might have appeared in census records with - rather than being reported as Daniel?

Alexander McKinney in Kentucky

Alexander McKinney m. Charlotte Lockwood on 25 Nov 1834. She was the daughter of John Lockwood of Lexington, Kentucky.

Posted genealogies report that Alexander died in either Cass County or in Fayette County, Texas in 1853. I have not been able to find them in the 1850 census.

Alexander & Charlotte reputedly had children:
1. Charlotte Ann McKinney b. 1833
2. Elizabeth McKinney b. 1835
3. Sophie McKinney b. 1837
4. Jim (James??) Lockwood McKinney b. 1839

Does anyone know what happened to this family?
McKINNEY to 20th Century New York - Chemung or Orange County?

If your McKinney parents or grandparent ancestors came from NY state and can be traced to either of those counties (or nearbys) I'd really like to communicate with you. I've lost 'em!

It began with Arthur born about 1706 Tyrone, Ireland. He settled in Ulster Co NY by 1740s, in the part that became extended Orange County on 1800 census. My direct ancestors migrated to Tioga (became Chemung 1836) Co NY 1818.

My direct ancestor was Alice, a daughter of John, son of Matthew, a son of Arthur. What it comes down to, by around 1900 I do not know what became of most of "my" McKinneys. I would like to. I have tracked some families beyond NY so may be able to know if yours and mine match or not, right off.

I need to revise - I entered the wrong date :o\
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I'm having trouble finding any information about my gggg-grandfather Daniel McKinney. I know he was born appr. 1874, he married Emilia Ragona (sometimes spelled Amelia, or Emilie). I think Daniel was born in NY, but may not have been. Either way he lived most of his life in New York and Long island. I just can't seem to find any further info. Anyone have anything, please contact me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I have found several Daniel McKinney's in NY around this time, but nothing with hard evidence to lead me to his parents. Neither of whom's names I know. Any info appreciated!

I believe his mother's name MAY have been Mary O'Donnell, born in Ireland. I think Daniel was born in NY, but may not have been. Either way he lived most of his life in New York and Long island.
