Sarah's maiden name was Ross. I found it in a book (hand prepared notebook)at the Mifflin Co. Historical Society in Lewistown, PA.
The book was a large volume on the Ross family of McVeytown, Mifflin County, prepared by two Ross sisters.

In my aunt's pass-down information, I have Leota Kingsley who married Josie William McKinstry. They had two children: Julius Melvin McKinstry born March 19, 1924, and Gertrude Mae (Sept 8 - 1927 - March 16, 1936).

Josie William was born Oct 20, 1901. Josie William was the second child of Julius McKinstry and Lillian M. Ingraham (Ingram?). Lillian was Julius' 2nd wife, and she was a Mohawk Indian.

NFI on Leota.

John L. McKinstry was my gg grandfather and I have been researching the family. I show that his first wife was Adelia Northrup and they had 7 children: Hellen L., George K.( died at 1 1/2 yr of age), Delocia (died at 1m 9 days old),Charles N., Mary E., George, and Bessie. Adelia died March 17, 1879.I am trying to find out if she died due to childbirth complications as Bess was born March 2, 1879. I do not find reference to the Grandmother you named- Clara Emes. I also believe that John's father was Horace K. and his mother was Delocia E. Carpenter. Can you clarify any of this?

I must apologize that I had confused Carrie L. McKinstry d/o Cecil and Eva McKinstry with her niece Carrie Lavinia McKinstry who is recorded as Lovonia McKinstry in my database.

There is a good reference in the Mifflin County Historical Society - "McKinstry and Ross Family History" by Roy Leech who proved himself into the Sons of the American Revolution through Alexander McKinstry and James Ross. Mr. Leech was a McKinstry family historian and his work over a lifetime is well documented.

I believe you are off a generation. Clementine may have been O.L.'s brother. In fact, I am almost sure of it. I have a historical piece from a biographical collection that mentions O.L. and the names of his children. Clementine is not listed. Besides, her DOB is wrong as well. The piece does mention O.L.'s father, Thomas McKinstry. This is who I have in my files as Clementine's father. Feel free to e-mail me privately and I send it your way.

C

Burial dates are hard to come by in the time period you are talking about. I have information going back to Alexander McKinstry and Mary Samuels in Bucks County PA, but no one in the database has a birthday of 1738, the closest being Alexander McKinstry 1752-1813 who lived in Ryde Twp.in Mifflin County, PA and fought in the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Alexander and Mary Samuel McKinstry and married Sarah (?) and had a large family.
My records show Ruth McKinstry (b. 24 Dec 1810 in Bratton Twp., PA d. after 10 Jul 1866 in Bureau County, IL) married to Robert Corbett ( no dates so far), son of William Corbett. They were part of the McKinstry families who moved from central PA to Bureau County, IL sometime around 1850. I do not have any information on the children of Robert and Ruth.

Ruth's parents were Alexander McKinstry (b. c 1770 E. Pennsboro, Cumberland, PA - d. 27 Nov 1828 and buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in McVeytown, Miflin, PA) and Sarah McDonald (b. c 1787 - d. c 1866).

Alexander's parents were James McKinstry (b. c 1722 - d. c 1814) and Sarah Huston ( b. c 1732 - d. c 1822) and James's parents were Alexander McKinstry ( b. before 1722 - d. after 1769, probably in Bucks County, PA) and Mary Samuels (b. before 1722 - ?).

I do not have any information on the Corbett family and would appreciate anything you could furnish. Ruth McKinstry's sister, Mary, was married to a Samuel Corbett, any relation to Robert?

A photo of Alexander McKinstry's grave in the Presbyterian Cemetery in McVeytown is attached.

I have a Cecil Joseph McKinstry (1886-1954) who married Eva N. Marshman (1893-1978) on 28 Oct 1915, both are buried in the Ryde Cemetery. Cecil descends from Thomas and Arabella Bard back to James and Barbara Hashbarger back to Alexander and Elizabeth Orr back to Alexander and Sarah (?).

Alexander and Sarah McKinstry's son Alexander (1770-1822), who married Elizabeth Orr (? -1822) lived in the Wayne Twp. area. Is he one of the Alexanders you mention?

Which Alexander McKinstry is which can be confusing, but they come from two lines, Alexander (1752-1813), who married Sarah ? and settled in Wayne Twp. and is buried in Ryde Cemetery and his brother James (1722-1814), who married Sarah Jane Huston and settled in Cumberland County. Both had sons and grandsons named Alexander.

To add to the confusion the Cumberland County James McKinstry's son, Alexander (1770-1828) who married Sarah McDonald (1787-1866) moved to Oliver Twp. from Cumberland County and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in McVeytown.

If you can give some dates on the other Alexanders in question, I would be happy to attempt to sort it out.

Your message is the first information I had on Cary Lavinia McKinstry's (1889-1947) marriage to Edward Witmer, would appreciate some additional information. I show her buried with her parents in the Ryde Cemetery with no other information other than the tombstone inscription.

Kelley, Glad to help out. I do not have any additional information on the Corbett family, but am planning to research the McKinstrys in Bureau County IL this summer and something my come up there. My line descends from James McKinstry's brother Alexander, but both lines went to Bureau County, IL. Thanks for the information on the Corbetts which filled in gaps in my research.

Genealogy of the McKinstry Family by William Willis (1858)traces Roger McKinstry and Mary Wilson from Scotland to Northern Ireland around 1669 and later their son, John McKinstry emigrated to Boston from County Antrim in 1718. The earliest mention of Alexander McKinstry in Bucks County, PA is in the History of Bucks County by W.W.H. Davis Chapt. 17, mentions an A. McKinstry owning about 327 acres in Buckingham in a 1727 survey. There is no specific reference that states Alexander McKinstry came from County Antrim, but the other McKinstry lines that I have researched, John in New England, Robert in Athens Co., OH, William in Franklin Co., PA and Rodney in Huntingdon Co., PA (very close to Alexander's son Alexander) all come from County Antrim. So I have concluded that Alexander McKinstry must belong to the same general family and come from the same area in Northern Ireland. I have other information and would be glad to share, my email is george97@bellsouth.net.

Linda; From my family’s documents I think the Robert McKinstry (1802) you mentioned was my ggggrandfather’s youngest brother.
John McKinstry (Jr) born 1782, died 1837; he was the eldest son and therefore inherited the farm, still owned today by a McKinstry, near Ballyclare.
John Jr. and his wife Ann Wilson had 7 children, all born on the farm in County Antrim.
Hugh b. 2/2/1805
John b. 1807
Jane b. 1810
Archibald b. 1812
Mary b. 1814
Anne b. 1817
Robert b. 1819 - his ggrandson, Brian, lives in the farmhouse, still raising cows & sheep.

I am descended from Archy. Hugh, John & Archy came to the US in 1832, same year their mother died. I have lots of info on Hugh & Archy, would love to hear about the family in Lisburn & Dunmurry (I have never been that far south of Belfast). I am also interested in the family that came to Canada.

Jan janraemac@yahoo.com
They had 7 kids the fourth child was a John born 22 Mar 1871 in Lisburn Dunmurry Antrim Ireland. Apparently he died 1954 but I don't have a marriage for him.
I would love to know more of my family. Thanks for writing. Linda

I am looking for information on Ruth McKinstry who was born abt. 1811 (maybe in PA). She married Robert Corbett. Robert and Ruth (McKinstry) Corbett are listed in the 1860 IL Census with their children and a David McKinstry (b. 1851, Ireland). I believe David is the son of William McKinstry (b. 1820, Antrim Ireland) and Agnes Smith (b. 1824, Antrim Ireland). David married Mary Rogers. I belive Ruth McKinstry may have been a close relative of William McKinstry and that is why his son was given to her. Anyone have any information?

He is also found on the 1870 census with them (age 18).

I believe Ruth's maiden name was McKinstry and I am trying to find information on her.
Wow! Great information. Thanks!

Here's what I have on the family of Robert and Ruth Corbett:
Children:
William A. COrbett (b. abt 1838)
James Stewart Corbett (b. May 20, 1839 in Mcveytown, Mifflin, PA; d. abt 1918) married Cecelia Mails
Armus S. Nov 11, 1849 in Malden, IL; d. Jun 20 1936 in Macon, GA). married Anderson Quay Clark. (this is my line)

Ruth and Robert (and family) can be found in the following censuses:
1860 Berlin Twp., IL
1870 Bureau, Berlin, IL
1890 Manhattan, KS

I have no idea if Samuel Corbett is related to Robert Corbett. As far as I can tell Robert had a sister names Amelia Sophia Corbett (b. Jul 19, 1819) who married a George Outman and may have had a brother names Joseph Corbett. Robert's parents were William W Corbett (b. abt 1891) and Sarah Roberts (b. abt 1795).

Do you have any more information or pictures on this family?

Thanks!
Kelley

I believe Anexander McKinstry is my gggg grandfather. My line goes through his daughter Ruth who married Robert Corbett. Can you send me any information you have on his ancestors or other descendants. The only information I have is that he was likely born in PA. I believe his daughter Ruth (my ggg grandmother) was born in 1811.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for all the information! Do you have any info on the grandchildren of Alexander and Sarah (McDonald) McKinstry? Or on the parents of Rachel McKinstry and Alexander McKinstry who married their cousins? Also, do you know if Samuel Corbett who married Mary McKinstry is a relative of Robert Corbett who married Ruth? Any idea who the David McKinstry (B. 1851) that Ruth McKinstry and Robert Corbett may have adopted is the child of?

Thanks!
