It's getting weirder. I started putting together a family tree on ancestry.com in order to pull all my notes together (including pictures--some of them are rather scarifying) and found some things that just don't make a lot of sense without more digging.

Ray McKown said that the Willard, Huron County, John McKown was also a Civil War veteran--possibly the 141st--the Union was pulling in a lot of "three month enlistees" by the end of the war in order to give the professionals some rest. I did find a John McKown who enlisted at the age of 45, but I think that's an uncle.

In the 1900 census, he gives his age as 61, which is possible if he's a veteran, but birth is listed as "abt 1859" which doesn't work with some other dates I have for him.

And then, of course, there's no grave for him with the rest of the family. Somehow, somewhere, I think I saw an online record placing his burial in Paulding County. Given the stories I've heard about Martha Jane Lewis's temper, her husband might have wanted some peace and quiet halfway across the state.

On the other hand, when the grave next to my grandmother was opened in 1962 for my grandfather's (Sam D Franks) burial, there was already somebody in it. I wonder if it might be John McKown?

Ah well, time for a martini and musings on just where the heck James McKown, Revolutionary War veteran, is. There's published accounts that he died in 1850 in Knox County where he is buried (My current candidate location is Bird Cemetery)

The Samuel Israel Mckown Jr. you found is my Great-grandfather. William is his brother. You are correct they are living with there Uncle John McKown. The three brothers that you refer to being in the civil war are John's Brothers

Hiram Marion McKown enlisted April 22, 1861, OVI 68th Co. C-Private
Nathanial H McKown enlisted , OVI 38th Co. F-Private
Samuel Israel McKown Sr. enlisted Oct 13, 1864, OVI 29th Co. D-Private (This is my GG-grandfather)

This has been a hard lot to find.

Curiousier and Curiouser:

My cousin Bull McKown always maintained that my g-grandfather John McKown of Huron County was one of three brothers who were Civil War veterans. The 1900 census lists John McKown as 61 years of age, which makes this possible, but the census return also gives his brith date as "about 1858" which doesn't seem likely, unless the Union was very desperate.

On top of that, the only John McKown I for who I can get details right now enlisted on My 2, 1864, at 45 years old. This would give him a birth date of 1818/1819. I suppose, like any number of others, a 65 year old Civil War veteran could have married a 17 year old in 1885 and fathered children, but there's no grave for a John McKown in Old Greenwood.

Perhaps a mystery solved: I do recall my father saying, when a grave was opened to bury my grandfather (Samuel D Franks) next to his wife, Fern Inez McKown, there was already someone in it. Perhaps John is buried with his wife and daughters, but unmarked?

A second issue is that the 1900 census lists Samuel McKown and William McKown as John's nephews, with a name like McRosen changed to McKown.

I just spent some time going through old notes and Ohio cemetery insctiptions in the genealogy room of the Library of Cngress.

It looks like John B McKown, b. Sept 1858, ended up in Willard (olim Chicago Junction) Ohio with a young wife (Martha Jane Lewis) and several children, one of them my grandmother (Fern Inez McKown)

He's in the 1900 census age 61, but not the 1910 census. His wife, just to make things interesting, uses "Jane C" rather than Martha.

I suspect that the William McKown buried with them in Old Greenwood Cemetery is his younger brother.

Hi--I don't have the name Poe in my information, but that is not to say there could not be a connection. Hiram was born in WV as many of his siblings were. Your William could be from one of them.

The William in my post would have been my gg grandfather's brother. He was born 19 May 1874, Paulding Co., OH and died in 1953 and is buried in Old Green Wood Cemetery, New Haven Twp., Huron Co., OH.

William had no children and was not married that I know of. I have his obituary it only refers to aunts and uncles. I have also found a WW11 draft card it states that he has brown hair, gray eyes, medium height and build. In the early 1900's he and his brother Samuel lived in New Haven Twp., Huron Co., OH (now known as Williard, OH) working for the B&O Railroad. I have a wedding photo of Samuel it has another couple with them, probably best man and maid of honor. I think it may be his brother. The other gentleman in the photo resembles my father and brother.

MY ANCESTORS
Hiram/my ggg grandfather was born in WV (He moved to Knox Co., OH then to Defiance Co.OH)
Samuel/my gg grandfather was born in OH, Defiance area
Samuel/ my g grandfather was born in OH, Paulding area
Albert/ my grandfather was born in OH, Antwerp area
David/ my father was born in MI

What year was your William born?

Victoria

Seeking marriage and death information on Andrew Jackson McKown, son of Osmer and Priscilla (Workman) McKown. He was born, I believe in Knox Co., Ohio. He lived in Mansfield, Ohio, most all of his life. He is the father of my grandfather born in 1909. I am trying to determine if he and my great-grandmother were actually married. If so, they would have been married around 1909, perhaps in Marion Co., Ohio (where my great-grandmother lived). She was born in 1891, so she was a good deal younger than him. They split up before my grandfather's birth, and A.J. was never in my grandfather's life; no more than a name on a birth certificate.

As Alice in Wonderland said," It gets curiouser and curiouser!" It is great to receive your information! I'll have to think about it a lot. It would be strange if there were not a connection, but if there is there must be a second Orr connection that I am not aware of. Thank you , Victoria.

Thanks so much! I don't recognize any of the names in the information you sent , but I will hold them on file and maybe later there will be a connection. Should you be able to get the information from the library on the Allegheny McKown, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks, Victoria, for your response to my query. Let me add to and correct the information I first posted. I am interested in John Orr McKown whose father is not Thomas but Dr. JAMES McKown. Since Dr. James McKown married Mary Orr in Brooke VA (WVA) and lived in Frankfort Springs, Beaver, PA I assumed John Orr McKown was born in one of those two places. But, Allegheny is not out of the question.
I have not been researching the McKown family but I can give you the information from Dr. James' will. His will of May 1835 leaves his surgical tools and some books to his brother who may be named Richison ( I will to my brother Richison Deweers Works 2 vols). Dr. James had died by June 10, 1835 in Frankfort Springs.
Mary Orr McKown remarried in 1841 in Frankfort Springs to James Duncan my great grandfather. Does any of this fit with your McKowns?

Andrew and Gilbert McKown are buried on the left side of the driveway of the Marshy-Dell House (AKA Gilbert McKown House) in Gerrardstown, WV. Their headstones were moved to the Presbyterian Cemetary down the road where many McKowns are buried. Andrew and Gilbert built the Marshy-Dell house in 1774 and it still stands today, (it is on the National Historic Register). It remains in the family and has been handed down to a very nice man who resides there. My brother went to see it and has taken photos of both the house and the burial place.

I too am a direct decsendant of Andrew and Gilbert.

You may e-mail me at monicagator76@yahoo.com., as I would love to know more.

I did a little more research and this gets more strange by the minute. This is what I found.

1850 Census Robeson Twp., Allegheny Co., PA

Samuel McKown 49 - Farmer -PA
Mary McKown 41 - PA
John McKown 24 - Farmer -PA
Jane McKown 18 PA
James Orr McKown 16 - Farmer -PA
Richeson McKown 14 -PA
Samuel McKown 12 - PA
William McKown 7 -PA
Anna Mary McKown 3 -PA

I also found a listing in civil war soldiers

http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm
James Orr McKown
OVI 3rd Co. The regiment organize at Camp Jackson, Columbus, OH. This regiment also had a 3 year enlistment.

I know you said that you were looking for John Orr McKown but the other name Richeson that you mentioned in the will is also listed in this family????

I am wonder if this may also be part of the family.
I found a James Orr McKown born 1834 in Allegheny Co., PA. Is this part of your family.?

This info is from the 1850 Census....I have partical access thru my Family Tree Subscription. I would have to go to the library to get full acces to see who else is listed on the census with him. This person would be about 16. So I would assume he is living in a household with some else and not by himself.

I found this interesting because my McKown ancestors start out in PA / WV / then to Knox Co., OH for sometime before going to Paulding Co., OH. I don't have have your McKown names in any of my collection of records. Do you have anymore info on Dr.Thomas McKown birth or parents etc.?

my line is
Andrew
Gilbert/Lady Jane
James/Pheobe Casto
Gilbert/Lydia Flesher
Hiram F./ Sarah Lewis
Samuel Israel 1st/Marie Eva Hilpert
Samuel Israel 2nd/Annabelle B.
Your welcome. I still don't notice any of the names. I did how ever find what I think maybe part of his family or at least some relation.

James McCowin/McCowan/McKown....the name is found with various spellings..... b. 1769 Baltimore, MD d. 1798 Beaver PA.

He married a Margaret Allen b. 1777 Chester, PA d. Oct 1846 Beaver PA.

They were married 23 JAN 1798 Wastinton Co., PA and had 11 children all born in Beaver PA.

Samuel 1798
Josiah 1800
Martha 1804
James 1807
William 1810
John 1810
Allen 1813
Elizabeth 1815
Thompson 1818
Margaret 1820
Harvey 1820

My ancestry doesn't show up in Baltimore Maryland. But Gilbert, that is my line of ancestory had 3 brothers that also came over from Ireland and I do not have any info on them so it is possible that these McKowns could be from one of the other brothers.

I will hold on to the info you sent me and if I find anything I will send it your way. I am going to the library in a couple of days and will check on the McKown I found in Allegheny and see who else is listed with him in the 1850 census.
