They seemed like nice folks. I, of course, never met either of them. Their "kids" have all been kind. I heard about Jerry. Right about the time he died was when we "found" the folks in Mitchell. He sounds like he was a very interesting and talented man!
Thanks for answering....I live in Scottsburg, Indiana just south of Indianapolis....I keep in close touch with Richard and Ronnie but don't get back to Mitchell very often...have been back twice to check on Richard after his latest illness...and have talked to Ronnie on the phone....they are like brothers to me and we continue to be very close....Before Jerry's death...he would call me at least once a week...sent me articles on all his work. and after his death , his personal papers, pictures were sent to me...I shared them with Richard and Ronnie...Jerry went by the "stage name" of David Alexander Terry...he had a beautiful voice and enjoyed working with the opera...plus giving voice lessons...
I have wonderful memories Uncle Curt and Aunt Gwen....they were both good people.

Yes, I saw pictures of Joe yesterday. He was quite a good-looking man. I would have to check with my mother, but, the Tindall name, I think, was very instrumental to my dad knowing anything about his family in Mitchell. His name was Floyd Tindall. Floyd's wife, Margaret was the 'liason' of sorts, bringing information back from Dad's Mitchell family to us. I don't kow if she carried info. back to them. The information she brought to us was very limited and mostly with secretive overtones. Kind of like 'don't let them know about you..' My dad and Ronnie have the same 'white head of hair', too! Of course, there very well may be a nephew of Curt's belonging to a Tindall man in Mitchell, also.

Glad that you enjoyed the McLain Reunion.....Joe was one year older than me...I graduated in 1956 and he graduated in 1955...he was a really handsome man...on our basketball team in high school...Richard, Ronnie and Joe grew up just a block from where my sister and I grew up in Mitchell...We all were very close and I still am close to Richard and Ronnie...Ronnie has told us of his trip to Florida to see your father...I have met Joe's children but it has been several years since I have seen them...it is nice to stay in touch with family....Also I remember a Tindall man in Mitchell that I always heard was Uncle Curt's son, but guess that Ronnie has checked this out and maybe he was just a nephew..I can remember that he had the pretty white hair like Ronnie has now...Robert Tindall had a daughter, Barbara in my sister's class of 1960 at Mitchell..

Lavon, I'm Janis' sister. Today, I attended the McLain Family reunion in Mitchell, IN.
Not many showed up, but, it was nice to meet everyone. I had previously met Richard and Ronald McLain. Today, I met Joseph's children for the first time.
I live in Indianapolis, so it was no great trek for me to attend. We exchanged info. Joseph's children are very interested in more information on photos they have that they cannot identify people in them.

Thank you for responding, I just happened to run on to info on Horace and the rest while searching and since they were from the same area I thought there might be a connection.
Here is what I know from the census and I don't know what my Great Grandfathers name was nor my Great Grandmothers maiden name:Prior Research only what I have found on Ancestry as follows: 1870 census: Mary McClain (McLain) widowed, b abt 1926 SC, living in Hickman, Scott, Arkansas, children: Mary A, 15, Elizabeth 13, Jacob O. 12, Venie L. (Ewen T) 11, John L.
1880 census: Mary McLane Age 54, living in Mountain, Scott, Arkansas, children: Livonia E. McLane 22, Jacob O. McLane 21, Ewen T. McLane 20, John T. McLane 17.
1900 census, Mary McLain 76 living in Township 3, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, John F. McLain 36, Lavina E. McLain
In some cases the census shows the children all born in Alabama and some Arkansas.
Notice that all 3 census they spelled the last name different, however I have a document that I got from the abstract office in Waldron, Ark. where Mary sold some land and signed her name McLain. I am so confused about where to go, I have looked at the 1860 census and although I havent been through all 350K of them I haven't found anything as of yet, I do know that a lot of the Western Missouri and Arkansas Cherokee move to that area of the state and since Mary was from South Carolina I thought that may have been how she got there but not sure. Also in the 1870 census the head of the household was David Comalander and Joseph Comalander and that they were younger than Mary and had also come from SC also that they may have been related to Mary. Anything you can find will be appreciated and if I can help just let me know.
Wayne McLain
Sherman, Texas
903-892-8863
wmclain.mclain@gmail.com

Hi Wayne,

You're great grandmother was Mary McLain. That must have been her married name, right? Do you know what her maiden name was? How old were her children in the 1870 census? If she had 5 children in the 1870 census, but only 4 in the 1880 maybe one of them moved away. Did you check the surrounding families on the census? Were any of them McLain's? I have lots more questions, but need to get my research together so I can ask the right ones. Hopefully we can get this sorted out and figure out how we're related. It's very exciting stuff!
Horace Arden McLain b 1889 Ark, d 1937 California his father was Mills B. Mclain b 1828 Ill. d 1911 Ark. his father was Jacob McLain b 1809 NC d1860 Ill, his father was James McClane/McLain b 1777 NC d 1849 Ill. you may already have this info. I to am looking for McLain's in Scott County Arkansas and by my DNA I have found that I too am related to these McLain's some way. My Great Grandmother was Mary McLain/McLane on 1870 census and 1880 census in Scott County, she had 5 children in 1870 My Grandfather was one of them, his name was Ewen Toliver they spelled it Venie on the census. In 1880 census she only has 4 Children and I have no clue about my Great Grandfathers name but he must have died in 1862 or 63 since John the last was born in 1863. If you have any information please let me know all of the records show that Mary was born in South Carolina in 1826, the last account was the 1900 census living with John and Lavina in Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.
Thank you,
Wayne McLain

I am beating my head against a brick wall with my husband's McLain family. They were from Pennsylvania and were in Montgomery County, Texas by 1860. I have no clue as to when they left Pennsylvania and where they may have stopped on the way. When I found the family in Montgomery Co.,TX there was only the widow Rebecca (Morehead) McLain and sons, Moses and Joseph. William, the father, was not with them and I've never found hide nor hair of him. Any help would be greatly appreciated if this is your family and if you know anything about them a reply would also be appreciated. Thanks,
I have a William McLain that came out of Pennsylvania. He married Rebecca Moorhead/Morehead and lived in Armstrong County. We have lost our William McLain. Rebecca and their two sons, Moses and Joseph appeared on the 1860 U.S. Census in Montgomery County, Texas with no William. They moved to Grimes County, Texas and lived there the rest of their lives. Does anyone know anything about this William McLain or his family in Pennsylvania. What happened to William?
If you know of a male McLain descendant who would be willing to join the project, you might learn where your branch fits on the tree.

Did we correspond on the Waites, Feagins, Bradleys, etc.?

We are no further back than Thomas, but I do think we've made considerable progress on establishing that his wife Elizabeth was not Elizabeth Doty, but Elizabeth Duff, d/o Shadrack Duff and Deborah Dixon. Shadrack and Deborah died in Guilford Co, NC, living Elizabeth and her brother Daniel as orphans. I think that discovery also turns the focus of the search for Thomas to the various McLain families in that region of NC. We also found Thomas McLain, Daniel Duff, Greenberry Dixon, and Rev. Thomas Murrell living on adjoining properties on Horse Creek in Sullivan Co. in the 5 years or so before Thomas McLain "of Sullivan County" bought land on Caney Creek in Greene Co. I have copies of those deeds from Sullivan Co. Happy to share what we're found.

Pat Seaver

Hi Pat, I think I might know of you...I am great x 5 grandaughter of Thomas McLain. My father did years of research for our family tree and didn't get any further than Thomas. I am trying to see if the McLains link to Scotland. My father is recently deceased, and I am trying my best to pick up where he left off. I realize your post is old but I'm hoping you will still see it. Maybe you even know more about it now 5 years later. Thank you very much!

I also have a William McLain, b. Oct 1840 in Johnsonburg, Warren County, New Jersey. He married Mary Ellen Armstrong at Yellow Frame, Sussex County, New Jersey. He is a Civil War veteran and received a pension from injuries he sustained when kicked by a horse.
I have information on this New Jersey family starting from Henry McLain b. circa 1780-1800. They lived in the Frelinghuysen Twp/Independence Twp. area of Warren County, New Jersey.

I believe that William's parents were from PA. I suspect that Williams father was John and John's father may have been Jacob. I know that there were several different spellings for the last name. From what I am learning the family who came from Ireland to PA went to Iowa or Ohio. I have William being married to Mary Aloysia Layton in Washington, Kentucky. I believe that they had a son, Walter, who either was born or at least lived in Perry County, Missouri.

I think we communicated once some years ago. I started researching again and found some relatives from David Lewis McLain's first wife who died. I also have his military record and some information about the first wife's family from the Gresham, Oregon Museum. Also, I do believe that Ethel, Inez's sister IS buried in Gresham as the cemetary records show that. The old pioneer church burned down which was the church D.L. McLain built as the founding pastor.
You can contact me at djmiller at sterling.net

Hello YBERRA, I don't know if your query was directed to
me, or to one of the other more recent posts (i.e. William
McLain of California). At any rate, I will give you my
answer since Ancestry notified me of your query, and maybe
the other(s) will chime in. It has nothing to do with the
subject line of BERTRAND E. MCLAIN AND LEAH M. YORK OF
MAINE.

Dennis Gove McLain is my 3rd Cousin, 3 times removed, but he
IS NOT a descendant of Reverand Alexander (McLean) McLain
of Bristol/Bremen. I and another McLain researcher who still
lives in Maine, have deduced that any stated connection of
the Reverand to any of the pre-1800 Lincoln County McLain
families that are in Dennis's ancestry or lineage is 100%
in error. The Reverand had a family of 6 children; the first
three (1 female, 2 males) died BEFORE 1850, and of the last
three (all females), one is known to have died in 1881, and
the deaths of the other two remain open. Most of the family
is buried in Chamberlain Cemetery, Bristol, Maine.

I will gladly share with you what I have on Dennis's lineage
and ancestors if you email me at gfkrzyzak@earthlink.net.
Another direct relative of Dennis presently lives in CA,
and I can let you know that info through an email also.

Thanks for the query.

Greg

You might be sure to check the spelling of McLean also when
looking up your ancestors. Mine came from Ireland and into
Lancaster, Pa; Tn ;' Guilford Cty, N.C. ; Mo. ; Fulton Cty, Ar. ; Jacksonville, Cherokee Cty, Tx.

William was a common name with the McLeans and McLains and also John.
