I'm afraid the Canada search story is not true. James Alan McLean (13 Dec 1863 - 26 Sep 1916) was the son of William David McLean and Mary McKie from Newton Stewart, Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland. William David , Mary and children emigrated to the US. We believe the family arrived in New Jersey 9 May 1871 on the ship 'Great Western' out of Liverpool, England. In 1880 census they lived in Ontario Township, Knox Co., IL; in 1900, Center Township, Butler Co., NE; in 1910, Springfield Village, Springfield Precinct, Sarpy Co., NE. They stayed there and were a prominent farming family. James Alan married Clara Boob 18 Dec 1889 in Springfield. They had eight children: Nettie, Mable Fern,William George, Raymond, John, Carrie, Howard, and Helen. My husband is the grandson of James Alan's brother John David. I have quite a bit of info on the family. Email me at jimmclean2@suddenlink.net and we can exchange info.

I'm helping my Son in Law Chris McLean with his research. Our story is of a 9 year old boy James Alan McLean) who left Scotland to find his older brother (perhaps John McLean) in Canada and when he couldn't find him he came to America where he settled in Sarpy, Nebraska. His fathers name could have been William but the family dosn't think his father ever came to America.

I was wondering if anyone on this thread ever heard the name Alexander McLean in any of your family stories. He was a coal miner area of Summit Hill and Hazleton, Pa. Died in a Mine accident. Most of the census stuff says he was born here in Pa but no record before 1900. But if he was from Scotland I have lots of leads.

Any help would be great!!
Harry A. McLean

I just found out that my relative Mary Kearns married a McLean in Pennsylvania. I do not know his name but Mary was born aound 1817 in Ireland. She died at a young age and left no heirs with her marriage with Mr. McLean. I'm not sure if you can help but I'm struggling to figure out who the McLean was that she married. Apparently, Mary's sister, Margaret lived with them while Mary was married.

Kearns descendent.

Greetings, I am searching for my great grandfather. He jumped ship in Nova Scotia in the 1880's. There, he changed his name to Richard Lane. I believe his original name was perhaps John Richard McLean. He was born on Feb 28, 1867, I believe in West Ham, Essex, England. Any chance anyone has him as an uncle?

Thanks, Kevin Lane, Buffalo, NY

Guess I'm showing my further ignorance here, does RC mean Roman Catholic? The obituary for their daughter, Isabella, my great grandmother stated that Isabella was a life-long Presbyterian and she was married by a minister from the Hazleton, PA Presbyterian church. Not sure about Jane and Allan, though.

The others must have been born and died between census years. I have been unable to find out any information pertaining to the deaths and burials of the the other children, but believe they probably occurred in Schuylkill county. Jane was only 14 when oldest, son John was born in 1843.
Directly linked on the Mulligan line. Would like very much to communicate with family members who might be able to share knowledge of this family of ours.

You have the couples birthdates so as I presume you can't find them on IGI www.familysearch.org then try Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It's pay perview but you may find something there - IGI is only and Index whereas you can see the actual registers here and they may give more information such as place of birth within the parish and father's occupations.

If they are not on IGI or Scotland's People then they may be some of the baptisms which may only be entered in the Session Minute books of the church (visit to Edinburgh required to the srchives) or they may have belonged to a church whose records have been lost or never kept. There was a lot of turmoil in the Church of Scotland.

Were they RC? I am not sure if all or any RC records are on IGI for Scotland

Marriages can also be a bit strange - again see minute books for those marriages where the couple agree to live together as man and wife before witnesses. The church didn't like them (but they were legal) and sometimes they only came to light when the first child was brought for baptism. I believe they were then fined and married ! (though I may be wrong on that too)

Sorry about the ramblings....

Yes RC is Roman Catholic, though as there was a Presbyterian Marriage involved tht may be unlikely, though not improbable.

There were many fractures in the Church of Scotland - secessionist churches being one. There is also the Free Church of Scotland which is very strict

The trick with Scotland's People is to plan what you are going to do before you start so that you are focussed and don't waste credits

Happy Hunting

Re: Angus Bain McLean b: 18 August 1900 Massachusetts

Hello Tom,
I'm the woman you just contacted via Ancestry.com regarding something I've posted about the amazing good fortune I had in tracking my German lines that were in the Eifel.

Well, lol, while trying to find what I had posted, I decided to view your postings and lo and behold see that you are asking about a McLEAN that was in Massachusetts.

There is only a small chance that your McLEANs might link somehow to my McLEAN / McLAIN / McCLAIN line (on my mother's lines) ...but I never pass up a possibility.

I have a DNA candidate (my cousin Leroy McLAIN b in Little Rock AR) that DNA tested on the Clan MacLEAN project on FTDNA site. I participated in the project on 67 markers along with then 'suspected' cousins on a line that settled 1820s in West Tennessee. We matched, thus closing up gaps in our paper trails.

On our line, we have good matches with other individuals that have lineages in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland and generally the Del-Mar-Va area. And I have an excellent 67 marker match (66 of 67) with a Barry MacLEAN born in MA who had a great grandfather John McLEAN b abt 1841 Prince Edward Island Canada ...stating in 1880 in MA that his parents were both born in Scotland. His wife was Agnes E. (Elizabeth) MORROW b in PEI and her mother was a TOWNSHEND. (For PEI research, see the online site The Island Register, which also now has a project on the same testing site ... FTDNA ..that I have used)

So I am interested in what you know about Angus BAIN McLEAN's ancestors. A group of we DNA related cousins are researching together and working to separate lines that were where ours were known to be ...VA /PA and KY / TN, as well as the Carolinas ... my direct line headed south, rather than going to the N/E or West into PA.

My mother was born 1920 in AR, to my grandmother Audrey McLAIN b Jan 1 1900 Newport, Jackson Co AR (she mar WASHBURN), to William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence Co AR (he mar #1 MOSIER, #2 Clara COOPER b 1878 AR).

Wm David McLAIN was born to John Henry McLAIN b abt 1835-37 Weakley Co TN, d 1880 Lawrence Co AR, mar 1857 AR to Sarah Catherine AGEE b 1842 TN.

John Henry McLAIN was one of the children born in West TN / Weakley Co to Charles McLAIN b about 1804/06 in ?IL or TN, d 1869 LawrenceCo AR, mar in TN? abt 1830 to Perlina Ann UNKNOWN.

Charles b abt 1804-06 is my ggg grandfather, and he had a brother John b in same timeframe ..they are 2 known sons of a senior Charles McCLAIN b circa 1780-85, d 1846 Weakley Co TN, mar Elizabeth UNK. They are my gggg grandparents ...and we think they were born possibly in NC but have no proof of that and do not know the parents of Charles Sr. That is our quest...and for that reason we are looking very carefully at the lineages of our DNA matches.

It appears my line was in the Del-Mar-VA area, then perhaps into PA / KY rather than the Carolinas ...however, it is possible they went into what is now TN, but once was part of NC ...where the Wautauga's settled before the Revolution...first seat of government outside the original Colonies ...N/E corner of present-day TN bordering NC, VA and KY.

Sure would be interesting and coincidental to discover you have German lines from the Eifel (and before that in The Netherlands / Belgium) that came to Wisconsin as does my father's WILLEMS / WILMS, PAULIs and KLINKHAMMERs, and also a McLEAN line that somehow links to my mother's McLAINs.

Death of Frank J. McLean [m. Susan Amanda Pillow]

Post this information for anyone interested.

August 9, 1867: Memphis Daily Avalanche: "At Columbia, last Saturday morning, Frank McClean, Esq., a prominent lawyer, was found on the floor of his room with his neck broken. He was son-in-law of Granville Pillow, Esq. It is supposed he fell out of bed in such a manner as to break his neck."

[note: newspaper announcement of his death spelled his name as shown above, although it was "McLean." Quite a tragic death. I don't believe I have ever heard of anyone dying in this manner, before this.]

Thank you, Virginia Mylius

I am searching for anyone who may be related to a Ruby McLean from Pennsylvania. Born:1895, died 1935 (or 1932). She was married to my grandfater, Edward Dodge, before her death. I suspect she was from the Erie, PA area.
