Re: Hiram A McLeod of Florida

Hiram did marry, but they didn't live together later in life. Her name was Temperance ??? They were married by a cousin in GA that was a preacher. She applied for a widows pension after Hiram died. Hiram did take Judah Benjamin to Cuba. There is a book about Lighthouses & keepers in Florida and it has a detailed story about it. I think he might have stayed a while as there were several Hiram McLeods on born in Cuba--though non state he was the father. When I opened the book to Hiram's picture, I almost fainted. He was the spitting image of my Grandfather, William Shefton McLeod. I don't recall the title of the book as it is packed away. Judah Benjamin wrote about it himself. And later in life Hiram gave a few interviews to reporters about how they made the escape. I'll have to see if I can find the book.

Kim, I am descended from loyalist William McLeod from Charlottenburgh Glengarry ONT. Supposedly his daughter married loyalist Henry Stuart of Cornwall Glengarry Ontario.

Have you found anything new? I have seen mention of him being related to Norman McLeod of the Talisker McLeod branch and Malcolm McLeod.

Jonah McKenna Moss

Hi Maureen,
Don't know if you are still checking this board.
Of course, we now know that Donald and Catherine's first daughter, Margaret, died in infancy and never came to Australia. Also that the Mcleods came out on the "Midlothian" in 1837, not the "William McNicol"
I haven't had any luck with the parents of either D or C but I think I have recently found the burial of Catherine. I have yet to confirm this but it is the first breakthrough in 30 years!!
Hope to hear from you sometime - I still have your private email, unless you have changed it.
Cheers,
AEnone.

I am looking for John B. McLeod who was born in Lairg, Scotland, and died in Marion, SC. And for his father, who was either Daniel or Norman.
Some of my McLeods lived in Ross & Cromarty too. They came from the Isle of Skye, then to Glenelg. This was Norman McLeod and Janette Morrison and their sons. I don't know how we would ever connect them unles you know more about the female McLeod (Dolina?)

Norman emigrated from Glenelg in 1770-75 and landed at the port of Wilmington, NC. From there they spread out to SC and eventually a few to Mississippi.

We were never in Australia, but we are probably distantly related.
Gail Livingston

Australian McLeod brothers die in two world wars

I am looking for information on three McLeod brothers:
John Alexander McLeod KIA Gallipoli 16/8/1915
Leslie John McLeod died on HMAT Kyarra 29/8/1915
Othel Keith McLeod died of injuries New Guinea 9/9/1943

Their parents were Alexander and Elizabeth Margaret McLeod. Alexander was a police officer and the family lived in several Victorian country towns including Yarra Glen and Daylesford.

My interest stems from a bequest by Elizabeth to create a stained glass window (image attached) in their memory. No one seems to remember the boys and I'd like to correct that. I have the war records on each son but would like to know more about their family. I'd also like to obtain images of the sons. I am happy to share the information I currently have.

Steve
Melbourne, Australia

McLEOD Family in St. Louis & Maplewood MO.

Looking for any info on my McLEOD/McASKILL/COLLINS family living in the St. Louis and Maplewood area. They came thru Texas some time in the late 1850's or early 1860's then into North Carolina, was told there were McLEOD's & McASKILL's family living there when Donald McLEOD w/wife Georgina McASKILL and a number of their children with them from Sutherland Scotland, don't know how long they were there or if any one stayed there. After NC they went to Crawford Co., MO., they were there for a number of years and then they went to St. Louis and Maplewood, MO. My g-grandfather was a lawyer, Alexander McLEOD in St. Louis & Maplewood(?). I'm not sure of the time line from St. Louis and Crawford Co., but they went back and forth and I know that they owned land in both places.. Donald McLEOD b. abt. 1806 Sutherland, Scotland..wife, Georgina b. Sutherland, Scotland, abt. 1815, d. St. Louis,.. the following daughter's & son's all born in Sutherland Scotland & came to America, to Crawford Co., MO. then to St. Louis & Maplewood and back to Crawford CO., MO (a number of them stayed in the St. Louis area)...(mine) Alexander b.abt.1858, d. 1932, George b.abt.1855, Murdo b. abt.1848, daughters, Johana b. abt.1846, Ann b. abt 1851, and John was born in Canada abt.1853. Alexander McLEOD married Sarah J. COLLINS, probably in St. Louis and then they had their family. What I need is some kind of info on Alexander & Sarah J. COLLINS McLEOD, I think her dad's name is Patrick COLLINS & mom is Sarah J. don't know her maiden name, but any info on them would be great. Some of the other names in this family is CLIBURN, MOORE, WALSH & ROBERTS. Thank you for any help you can give me and I hope this info will help someone else too.
Thank You,
Sandee

Just yesterday I ordered fiche from the LDS library of old Parrish records of Scottish Births, Marriages, and Deaths.

I just hope they will not be in Gaelic when I get them. If you will post the part of Scotland where he was born or married, etc. and full name, I will try to look for him when I get the records.

I am looking in Sutherland and Ross and Cromarty for a John B. MacLeod who may have been born in 1772 in Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland, and then emigrated to US, eventually to Marion, SC. Also for his possible father Daniel and his father Norman.

Or go to your local LDS center and get them to check Parrish (c hurch records.

Gail Livingston

That's the first thing.

My McLeods came from Scotland to North Carolina about 1770 and moved on through Sourth Carolina, finally settling largely in Wayne Territory, later Wayne County, MS
Also check the MacLeod web sites by googling.
I have Henry and Hiram back to their birth in Georgia but have hit a brick wall with their parents. Famiy legend says that they are the children of Norman McLeod and Katherine McIntosh of Georgia but I have spoken with members of that line and can find no connection (and they have extensive documemtation). There are many documented connections in the Florida Mcleods. They first appear as siblings in an early Florida census as Norman, Hiram, Henry and Flora and that's as old as I have right now. I do have documentation of that other Georgia line if you'd like me to check it for you.

My Alexr resided in Breakish and married Christy McKinnon in Strath, having a couple of children there before emigrating to Australia in 1839.

I wondered if they might be the couple whom you referred to as having had children in Strath, I know they do pop up on the IGI records. Donald was the son of Duncan McLeod and Jessie ( Janet ) Leslie; after their death, it appears that two McLeod aunts finished raising Donald and his brother, John L. McLeod. Any information would be helpful. I would very much like to locate living descendants also if at all possible.

I'm sure there's an Alexander in my line somewhere, but a confirming connection could be made if I could discover which Norman is mine. He was the father (though a little doubt) of George Washington McLeod (born 1820) and a number of other children: Jacob, Agnes, James, Hariett, Robert, Norman, and Roderick. This Norman probably married Elizabeth Cade in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. Does this match with any of yours?
