James McLOUD Killed When Hoisting Machine Gives Way at Pittsburg, Penn.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 22 October 1903, Wapanucak, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

DEATH TO MANY

Hoisting Machine Gives Way and Hurls Men to Death

A Dozen Workmen Instantly Killed

Eight of the Dead Have Been Recovered - Five Men Seriously Hurt - Many Are Yet Supposed to be Pinned Under the Wreckage

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania: By the breaking of the ropes carrying five beams to their position, letting many tons of iron fall upon the moving crane at the Pittsburg end of the new Wabash bridge being built by the American Bridge Company over the Monongaheia River, almost a dozen workmen were hurled to death by a fall of more than 100 feet, striking the water and two barges underneath. Eight of the dead have been recovered. Five men were seriously hurt. Several bodies are yet pinned under the wrecked barge. The part of the bridge extending out over the river from the Water Street side is a total wreck. The casualties follow:

William C. Fleming, George Wells, James McLoud, Frederick Stallinger, J. Campbell, William Kitlinger, Frank Dalby; the missing are Edward Morris and Phillip Morris.

Deputy Corner L. C.Huckle made an investigation at the scene of the disaster. He believes the blame rests on whoever was in charge of the hoisting and fastening of the I beam. He says that a failure to properly secure one derrick load caused the breaking strain to fall on the crane.

The accident was caused by the giving way of a two-inch steel cable which was used as one of the guys to support the big crane. This cable was tested to bear a strain of 100 tons, and it is said that it did no break but pulled loose from its fastenings.

There were thirty-four men at work on the superstructure of the bridge and in the barge below, from which the beams were being hoisted by the crane, 1,775 feet above the river lever, when the booms collapsed. Of the men who were in the barge, some escaped with their lives by jumping into the river the moment they heard the crash above. Some of the men on the superstructure who were engaged in riveting and handling the bars that were lifted from the barge also got off uninjured.

This is reply from the Aaron McLoud line. Aaron married Lucy Ann Burbank and they were the parents of Edith McLoud who married Fred Enos Eddy. Fred and Edith Eddy are my great-grandparents.

I would be interested in exchanging information.
Dear Gladys, YES we have a good chance to be related, I found Robinson's in my tree. It seems that my Great, Great Grandfather was John Laney McLoud {Born-December 25, 1868 in Miano, TX., died-July 21, 1935 in Bertram, TX.}, he married Susan Catherine Ming {Born-August 20, 1870 in Grayson County, TX., died-July 26, 1936 in Bertram, TX.} on September 20, 1888 in Burnet County, TX. They had 6 children, Margaret Louise, Florence Elizabeth, Willie Pearl, Alex Elmo{my link}, Ernest Pair, and Grover Dalton. Margaret married Robert W. Robinson, she was born January 26, 1889 in TX. and died November 17, 1961 and was buried in Forest Park Cemetary in Leaque, TX. I have some more information if you feel there is a link. Please write me if you want too. I am sorry it took me so long to write, I forgot about the inquery being listed. I just lost this site. Now I am glad I found it. Hope you are a match.
Proper spelling?

There has been many posting to this forum on the "correct" spelling for our ancestors. The best advice I can give anyone researching this surname is to look into ANY spelling. I have 3 brothers who each took different spellings. My ancestor took his father's versiom of McLeoud. I have court documents with the same name spelled 3 or 4 different ways on the same page!. Remember the person transcribing a document (census, court, marriage, etc) will spell a name as they believe it is. Takes alot of work to tie thse family members together!

Ran down a McLoud who left Hartland CT.

Anson b 1786 married Clarissa Beaman. One of their sons was William McLoud born about 1818 in CT. He shows up in the 1820 and 1850 Census for Hartland.

William marries Catherine K. (name unknown) and goes to Keok, Keokuk Co., IA. where he was town clerk in 1853.

William and Catherine had: Mary, Edward, Winthrop, Cathrine, all born in CT. After they moved to IA they had Ellen, Sarah and William.

I found Willima and Catherine and some of their family in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census in Keokuk where he was a farmer.

Chris

Tim,
Notice they spelled it McLoud. Could be a streach, buy hey, I've been thrilled with the 1% of mine that actually worked out <grin>. No DOB or other info was recorded. Here is my source for the children of Anson and Clairsia Beaman McLoud:

Connecticut, 1600s - 1800s Local Families and Histories
New England Families, Vol. IV Genealogies and Memorials, 1913.Reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Col., Inc 1996

This couple was married in East Hartland, CT (west of Hartford) and the Beaman's had some history there. I have not really started to look for primary documentation, some volunteers said they could not find things about the McLouds in their records. But I don't think they were dealing with birth and census info. So there is more to do in the Hartland area.

I would like to learn more as well.
Chris

Have you seen the 1910 census listing Bias & Melissa McCloud? They are living next door to Frank & Sarah Etheridge in Pike Co., Mississippi. I came across this in my research although this McLoud line is not my branch.

Am looking for my cousin's McLOUD family.

His great-grandmother was Elva S. McLoud. She was one of about 7 kids. She was born about late 1870's in Vermont.

She was the daughter of Henry H. McLoud who was born in the 1840's.

I have info on Elva's children & great-grandchildren and a little about Henry as well. Would love to share info to right family.

He may be related to Enoch & Morillo. They mostly all lived in Washington County, Vermont.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Linda E. Asaro of New Jersey

I am a descendant of Julia McLoud Nichols, who I am sure is a sister of your Smith McLoud born 1801 in NJ. Julia was born about 1797 in NJ and married John Nichols in Yates Co., NY about 1816. They moved to Avon, Livingston Co., NY about 1839. They had 12 or 13 children, including my great-great-great grandmother Sarah Ann Nichols Johnson Pierce. They also had a son named Smith Nichols (1923-1878) who resided in the Avon area and is buried in the Avon Cemetery. John died in 1870 and Julia in 1878, and they are buried in the East Avon Cemetery. Several of John and Julia's children, John Nichols, Charlotte Nichols Proctor, my g-g-g grandmother Sarah Ann Nichols Johnson Pierce, Julia Nichols Ross, and Harrison Nichols moved to Ionia and Montcalm County Michigan in the 1850's and 1860's. I don't have any more information about Julia's parents, but will let you know if I find anything.

Since that posting I have found out quite a bit. I went to Topsfield MA.

In short, Angus McCloud in 1784 married Sarah Giddings, daughter of one of the founding fathers of Hartland, CT. They had a son Anson who married Clarissa Beeman in 1809 in Hartland. Quite a bit is known about her and her family as well. Their children were Anson, Abigail, Sarah, Jane, William and Antoinette. This Anson was Rev. Anson McLoud of Topsfield MA. He married Jane Cornish, who was from Simsbury CT in 1842. They had four children, Malcom (b 1854), Norman (b1856), William(b 1851), Helen(b 1843). They were all born in Topsfield MA. Helen married Ruben Nye in 1857. Malcom married twice. First to Agnes Andrews in 1881. There were two children by this marriage Miriam (b 1890) and Anson (b1888). Agnes died in 1902. Malcom married second Ellen Keenan. They had a child Malcom. There are lines decending from the children of Miriam and Malcom.

I have more information if anyone is interested. Chris

I am looking for information about the ancestors of Rev. Anson McCloud (b 1813 Hartland CT, d 1883 Topsfield MA ). He married Jane Cornish who was from Simsbury CT. His parents were Anson (b & d unknown) & Clarissa (Beamon) McCloud who were married in Hartland 1809.

I believe that the Rev. Anson's grandfather was Angus who married Sarah Giddings in Hartland 1784.

A 1907 biography of Rev. Anson says he was decended from Aurora McLoud, who came from Scotland during the French and Indian Wars.

This ring any bells? I am have other information on their wives but none on other siblings from Rev Anson backward.
