Recently I had the opportunity to review the probate file for Nellie McManis of Chicago (Cook County, IL).

It wasn't the file I was looking for, so I was disappointed, but I hope my disappointment will be your gem of info.

Cook County, Illinois Probate file 95598, docket 228, page 596

Nellie d. 2/11/1924, age 47. Her birthdate was not listed, nor was her last address.
Her sister, Lucille Flanagan was the executrix.
Lucille lives at 1011 N. LaSalle St., Chicago.

Nellie never married. Her father was Hugh McManis who died "about 15 years ago". Hugh was married only once to Elizabeth. Elizabeth is deceased also.
Children borne to these parents: 8 living, 10 born, 1 died in infancy and Nellie (yes, this was confusing to me, too, but that's what it said).

The siblings of Nellie, who were her only heirs, are:

Mary--not married
Margaret Huffman, divorced from husband Thomas Huffman
John
Frank
James W.
Bessie, not married
Lucille--married to John Flanagan, who is still living
Cathernie Stern, married to Anton, who is still living

I'm not related to this family in any way, and have no additional information...just a bluebird of info for you!

Bonnie

In 1850 Rush County Census, spelling is McMANNIS. Elizabeth is not listed. I am certain that she is buried next to her parents, there is also an an America next to her, I had always been unsure where America had fit in. Elizabeth may also have had a sister named America. Both stones are almost illegiable, and are located in the Kiplinger Family plot in East Hill Cemetery, outside of Rushville.

I just realized as I was entering this census info in my file that the James listed is James Columbus age 7,Donaphelipa age 9, America age 8, and Jasper Newton age
6, are living in the house of Isaac and Margaret Kittle (unsure of the first letter K, hard to read) they are ages 71 and 62. No James Jr. or Elizabeth. Now this is going to get really interesting for me!

I FINALLY fiqured out how to look at the flip side of the census records. Elizabeth and James are alive and well in 1850 in Union Township, Rush County, Indiana. James was a farmer with 1000 acres age 46 born in Ohio, Elizabeth was age 34 born in Kentucky, and Polly was age 16 and Euceba was age 12, the other 4 are listed on the other side in my previous post. NOW I can get some sleep! Elizabeth did also have a sister named America as she married Abner Parson on November 05, 1835 in Rush County, Indiana. there is a stone in the cemtery that I mentioned thats barely says America, which is all I can make out. Need to spend a day at the courthouse researching these records. Sorry to be a bother, if you want the Kiplinger info let me know, I have it back to about 1700.

I have no idea for sure who these two are in the first picture but when I opened it up, it was like looking at my father, grandfather or greatgrandfather, Martin Russell McManus, Thomas James McManus or Timothy Thaddeus McManus as they all look the same at that age. The girl looks like my grat aunt Mary Bridget McManus Fitzgerald but I can't be sure. I went to this web site because, although my family is McManus, I see that in the 1981 census, Great Grandpa Thady McManus' brother Denis is listed as McManis

I keep going back to that first picture of the two people. There has to be a family connection as the man is the absolute picture of my father, not just a close resemblence but the very picture of him, as well as his father and grandfather. I would love to have a print of that picture. I assume that there is anything written on the back of it. Theresa McManus Neville

Not that I am aware of at this point, but then, I don't really have too much info on the family after they settled outside Ottawa in Pakenham. We do know that Terrence had sons, Patrick, Michael, Timothey Thaddeus (Tady), and Denis along with a daughter Mary Ann but don't know what happened to any of the family other than Tady's as that is my line. We also don't know what family Terrence had. So there might very well be some connection, just can't document it.

Denis J. McManis, Ontario Canada

Recently I discovered that my great grandfather's brother is listed in the 1881 census in Ontario, South Renfrew, twonship of McNab as McManis whereas the rest of the family goes by McManus. Terrence McManus came from Ireland to Ontario and is listed in the 1871 census (age 71) for that area with wife, Margret (Margaret) age 69 as well as Michael James age 29, and Mary Ann as well as son, Patrick age 45 with wife Sarah Barber and family. Son Denis age 39 with wife Catherine with daughter Margaret Ann and son John McCafrey lived nearby as did son, Timothy Thaddeus (Thady) age 46. Terrence shares a gravesone with son Denis J and daughter Mary Ann in Pakenham cemetary in Ontario. I am in hopes that someone recognizes these names as I have been at a roadblock for many years, even after a visit to that area.

Elizabeth Kiplinger was born between 1805 and 1815, the daughter of John W. Kiplinger and Mary 'Polly' Hayes. John and Polly came to Rush County about 1824, with his mother and other siblings, his father may have died by then, but a divorce in on record in June 1818. (at any rate, mom came without dad) Johns parents, Elizabeths grandparents, were Philip Kiplinger and Barbara Mock. A number of persons came to Rush County from Bourbon County all about that time, including alot of Barbaras family as well. I have alot of info on the Kiplinger family, but only what you posted about James and Elizabeth. Would like to share info, let me know if this message reaches you.
Donna
(located 1 mile north of the Rush County line)

McManis in Washington

My name is Wil Keepers, and I am attempting to put together my family history for my kids when they grow up. My great grandma, who died in 1984, had the maiden name McManis. Her mother was Emma Luckey, who I have a lot of history for, but I know nothing about her father, not even a first name. I know that they had 2 daughters, Vivienne (my great grandma), born in 1894, and Thelma, born 8 or 10 years later, both born in or near Seattle. Her mother moved there from Oregon, I do not know whether she met her husband in Oregon or in Washington. I would appreciate any information that could tell me who my great great grandpa was and any information about his family. Thank you.

Wil Keepers
