John McMillan and Minnie Schroeder (WI 1877-1966)

I am trying to find information on John McMillan and Minnie Schroeder. I don't know much, but I would be grateful for any help.

John McMillan born approx 1877. Supposedly he was born on the ship from Scotland to Canada. So he wasn't technically Canadian. According to one of the census, John emigrated from Canada approx 1892.

He married Minnie Schroeder in 1902 in Wisconsin. I have found him listed in the US census for 1910, 1920 (last name listed as McWilliam), and 1930. They are living in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin which is near Milwauke.

Minnie Schroeder was born approx 1878. I was told she was raised near Neenah, Wisconsin. She had 5 children: 3 girls and 2 boys. Both boys died in infancy. Gladys was born in 1906. Lillian and Evelyn were twins and were born in 1913. I think Evelyn died young, but I'm not sure.

Lillian married someone with the last name of Hull. Gladys married Joseph Arsen Freeman in 1924. I'm descended from them.

John McMillan died in 1966. Minnie died around 1950 I think.

Most of the information I received was from a great-uncle Freeman.

Any help would be very appreciated since I seem to be running into brick walls.

Need Death Info, Prince Edward Island, children of Daniel McMillan and Mary McKinnon

I am looking for any death/obit or other info that might be available for these siblings (parents Daniel McMillan and Mary McKinnon):
1. Florence M. (Butler) McMillan b. abt 1879 on Prince Edward Island and was buried at Mount Benedict catholic cemetery 21 Dec 1940. The Butler name was given in the cemetery record but I don't know the connection to the McMillan's. She was pn PEI in the 1901 census.
2. Daniel J. McMillan/McMillen b. abt Apr 1878 on PEI and was buried at the New Calvary catholic cemetery 21 Dec 1940. I don't think he was ever married (per 1910 & 1920 census - couldn't find in 1930 census) but he did have a child out of wedlock (of the same name) that died 1 Oct 1902 and is buried in the Mt. Benedict cemetery.

Thank you,
Dan Harvey
Seattle, WA

Not sure how everyone does this...it can be very frustrating trying to figure out your ancestors :-).

Thank you, if you think you have any information that I might be able to use and would not mind sending it to me, please do...sorkat@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks ~ Kathy

Re: Thomas B. McMillan of Alabama and Ohio

Thanks for responding to my board message of over four years ago. I have since learned that Thomas Bell McMillan was born in 1884 at Camden, AL, the son of Thomas and Virginia (Spiva) McMillan. He died in 1956 at Massillon, OH. Their only child was Thomas Alexander McMillan, born in 1922 at Warren, OH, and died in 1991 at San Diego, CA. So there doesn't seem to be a connection to your family, but I surely appreciate your reply.

Do you know anything about Flora Ann McMillian that you mentioned in your message? I am trying to find info on my grandmother, Annabel McMillian Stone who born in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada. My mothers name was Flora Ione and maybe she was name after her grandmother. Annabel had a brother named Dan and a sister named Margaret. Dan was born in Scotland before they moved to Canada. There are so few family members left, I have come to a dead end.
Any help would be appreciated.
Yvonne Cole
elocjayco@hotmail.com

Amy, I have not yet found any records on Elizabeth Jolly (Jolley). I have seen trees which list her as coming from "SC" which some have interpreted as "Scotland" and some as "South Carolina". Since Peter's wife came from South Carolina, I am going to start looking there. If anyone can help us out, please post!

Wilson Lumpkin McMillan, Celia's brother, was born in Jackson Co. GA. Census info shows him as a son of Peter Edward McMillan and Sarah Kerbow. You may not have info because he moved away and married Mary Mansfield Brown from Blackhall District, Dekalb County, GA, in Dekalb in 1853, and then moved to Calhoun Co.,AL (1860 Census), before settling in Pickens Co. GA by 1870. He was a CSA soldier. He and his wife are buried at Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery, Jerusalem Township, Pickens Co., GA, near Jasper, GA.

I am curious as to the location and names in the cemetery you mention. I visited a location known as the McMillan Cemetery in Jackson County GA in December 2008 but it had some graves with a chain link fence around them and graveled in to help keep down weeds. It is not far off Hwy 29/316 between Lawrenceville and Bethlehem GA. I have some readable names and photos. We might have info to share. I would also like to know which location, if either, might have been known as the Thad Pirkle farm.

I descend from Daniel McMillan, Samuel McMillan (m. Elizabeth Jolly/Jolley), Peter Edward McMillan (m. Sarah Kerbow), and Wilson Lumpkin McMillan (m. Mary Mansfield Brown).

For about two months he has been closely confined to his home with cancer of the stomach, under treatment by Dr. Piercy. He was a native of Illinois and came from there to California and to this county in 1884. He was a Union soldier and served during the war in the 128th Ohio regiment. From the time of his arrival in this State he had followed mining as his chief occupation. In the late presidential campaign he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Bryan ticket, and did some good campaigning by speeches and electioneering in its behalf. He was a good husband, kind father, and useful citizen, whose death is deeply and widely deplored. His wife and two grown-up sons, Clark C. and Frank E., survive to keep and honor his memory. His funeral and burial next Sunday will be conducted by Rev. C.C. Pierce, under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. of which order he was an honored member. His family have our sincere sympathy.

The Mountain Democrat
December 18, 1897

Funeral Rites of J.K. McMillan

The funeral of James K. McMillan last Sunday was from the family residence at the Franklin mine to Union Cemetery, where he was interred. It was an imposing demonstration of respect for the dead and sympathy for the living. A lovely day blended its sunshine with the prevailing sorrow. The imposing obsequies were under the auspices of Coloma Lodge No. 27, of which he was a member, Morning Star Lodge No. 20, Franklin No. 74, and Leona Rebekah No. 30, I.O.O.F. The religious and ritual services, the hymns by Mr. and Mrs. Bland, Miss Mollie Carpenter and A.S. Fox, the dirges by the two brass bands, mingled sad and loving refrains in honor of a kind husband and father, a respected brother and a good man.

William John McMillan immigrant from Ontario to Minnesota 1880's

I'm looking for more information about my Great Grandfather William John McMillan. His death notice shows he was born on Dec. 27, 1841 in Canada and died in St Paul, Minnesota o Jan. 1, 1930. He was married to Annie (or Anna) Todd who was from Scotland. I did find a birth record for my Grandfather who was their son and was born in the town of Fergus, county of Wellington, Ontario on September 14, 1869. My Grandfather died in Washington State. I believe he died in Seattle, WA May 13, 1924. On my Grandfather's birth record it shows my Great Grandfather William John McMillan as a sailor. I know he later wored for the Great Western Railway out of Kingston, Ontario, Canada where he became acquainted with Thomas Edison who I believe sold newspapers on the railway then. My Great Grandfather later immigrated with his family to Minnesota and may have done some farming there. He was a conductor also for the Great Northern Railroad and worked directly for and was a friend of James J. Hill. Would appreciate any information.
William John McMillan "The Bear" 1869-1924 Ontario, MN, OR, WA, Alaska

My Grandfather's name was Willim John McMillan. He was born in Fergus, Ontario, Canada I believe on September 14, 1869 and died in Seattle I believe on May 13, 1924. He married my Grandmother on December 24, 1892 in St. Paul, MN. My Grandmother's maiden name was Lena (Michaelena) Schmidt but was shown as "Smith" on the marriage record. I've been told that most of the work my Grandfather did was with various railroads. He operated steam shovels. He was almost 6 feet tall and weighed over 290 with an 18 inch neck. He worked in Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, and Alaska as far as I know. In Alaska I've heard he was known as "The Bear". In the railroad building off season in Alaska he worked in cigar shops. His main home had been in Gladstone, OR where his family had settled, but in his last years he had left my Grandmother and married someone in Seattle before he passed away. Anyway, would appreciate more info. My email is: tomwdcraftr@juno.com

Lena (Michaelena) McMillan immigrant from Germany to Minnesota & OR

My Grandmother's maiden name was Lena (Michaelena) Schmidt. However, on her marriage license to my Grandfather William John McMillan her name was shown as "Smith". They were married December 24, 1892 in St. Paul, MN. My Grandma was born on January 6, 1874 in Germany or somewhere in Prussia and died in Oregon on August 23, 1957. Her parents were Martin Schmidt who was born in 1844 in West Prussia Germany and died in St. Cloud, MN on 4/10/1929, and her Mother was Katherine (or Catherine?) Schmidt (maiden name Banke) born Jan 13, 1852 in Prussia Germany and died in St. Cloud, MN 8/26/1933. As best I can tell from census records they immigrated in 1881 and 1883. Martin and Katherine were said to have had 17 children (a MN census showed they had at least 16, some likely born in Germany and some in Minnesota). Anyway, would appreciate any info on any.
I am searching for information on Seaborn Sexton who was married to Catherine McMillan. His youngest daughter, Mellisa, was my brother-in-law's mother. Melissa's mother was Elizabeth ? . Do you know what happened to Catherine and do you know Elizabeth's last name. Melissa was told her parents were blown away in a hurricane (tornado). George W. Hightower and wife took the younger Sexton children in and raised them. I have attempted to locate the name of Seaborn Sexton's parents to no avail. I can find plenty on Seaborn "Sebe" Sexton but he is not who I am searching for.
Any information you might have would be of help to me.

I have been unable to locate Samuel McMillan the father of Peter Edward McMillan priror to post Rev. War. In 1789 Samuel's oldest brother Reverend Peter McMillan migrated from Ireland to the Long Cane region of Abbeville Co. South Carolina. By the time of the 1790 & 1800 census a brother James McMillan and a brother Archibald were grouped together and at least 2 of the 3 brothers were living in the Rev Peter's 1790 census household. From the ages of Samuel's children it appears he had two wives. In the same area that Samuel is later found there are two families of "Jollys" that were likely there pre and during Rev. War. The age and timeing of Samuel's 2 oldest know boys, Peter Edward & John would be with 1st wife. Before Samuel migrated to Jackson Co. GA. he married Margaret Buchannan a sister to his brother James' wife Mary Buchannan. I have found no direct documentation to any of these marriages but much circumstantial evidence to support above.

If you want to discuss further details please contact me direct thru e-mail harcielw@rrohio.com

We might be interested in an exchange of information since I am related to the brother (James Jackson McMillan) of your William Lampkin McMillan son of Peter Edward McMillan, son of Samuel McMillan, son of (Possibly)Daniel McMillan. I have good documentation that 4 brothers, Reverend Peter McMillan, Archibald McMillan, James McMillan, and Samuel McMillan are indeed brothers but cannot arrive at the conclusion that their father was named Daniel. I have some background information on their presence in Ireland but cannot document a father's name.

If interested please contact me at harcielw@rrohio.com direct.

Peter Edward McMillan had TWO Curbo/Kerbo wives and children by both - Sarah M. and Rodetta Obedience. In 1860 their mother Celia Curbo/Kerbo was living in Peter's household.

Wayne

Margaret McMillan Ward

I'm looking for information on my great-grandmother, Margaret Ward. Her information on her immigration papers states her mother's name was Salina Millan, but speaking with my family, they believe the name was actually McMillan. Margaret's address was listed as 131 Queen Street, Govan, Glasgow Scotland. Margaret married John Ward and the family moved to NYC in 1925 (John came before them). Margaret was born in 1881 and died in NYC around the late 60s or early 70s. Her children are: John Ward, Catherine "Kitty" Ward Van Dyck, Anna "Nan" Ward, Bridget "Bea" Ward Mescal, Patrick Ward and Mary "May" Ward. Children were born from 1905 - 1919 all in Glasgow.
