WILLIAM MCMILLEN

I am looking for birth location and parent names for my great grandfather, William McMillen (MacMillan?). I do not know anything about his Scottish roots other than he was born in Scotland. I do know that he was born May 30, 1859. He immigrated to the USA about 1871 (age 12), although I have never found any immigration records. He lived for sometime in Oakland, Pennsylvania, USA probably working in the mines. He married Mary Jane Pierson in 1889 at a Protestant Episcopal Church in Oakland, Pennsylvania.
William and Mary Jane also lived in Elmira, New York, USA. They had 4 children who were all born in the USA:
dau: Lillian Sylvannia McMillen b:1890
dau: Ferne Travilia McMillen b:1895
son: Leslie Pierson MacMillen b:1897
son: Ernest Wilfred MacMillen b:1901
I have spent some time looking on Scotlandspeople but have had no luck so far. If this William McMillen sounds familiar to anyone or if you have any ideas to help me in my search, please contact me. I am also wondering about the middle names for the two daughters. Are they Scottish names? I would appreciate any help I could get.
Sincerely,
Debbie

DNA Western PA

My Father was adopted. Through DNA testing I learned the family line was McMillen. I found and contacted a descendent of my ancestor who tested his DNA and we match 30/30. My ancestor is George W McMillen b 1825 d 1905 in Fayette, PA. I also match McMillens with ancestors from Turkeyfoot, Somerset, PA. They are second cousins to each other and match me 42/43 and 64/67 Their ancestor is James McMillen b 1735 Ireland, d. 1820 in Turkeyfoot.
There are many people on this forum looking for connections in Western PA area. If you are a male McMillen (any variation of spelling) or know someone who is, I encourage you to test your DNA and submit your results to the Clan MacMillan DNA project.
We could probably make some connections that are not apparent at this time. Just want to let people know what you can learn from a cheek swab.

Sarah McMILLEN b. 1794 - Huntingdon Co., PA

Hoping someone will know a bit about this McMillen (McMillan)family. I only just learned that my ancestor, Sarah McMillen b. 10 Jun 1794 supposedly in Huntingdon Co., PA was married to David McCARDELL (McArdle, McCardel, etc.) around 1816 - likely also in Huntingdon Co., PA. I know they eventually moved to Clearfield County and that is where they put down roots, raised a family, etc. Would love to know more about the McMillen's if this rings any bells. I'd be happy to share what I know of this couple and their descendents. Thanks!

My McMillen family started with Thomas McMillen coming
from Ireland and settling in Harrisburg, PA. His brother
James came over as his indentured servant, and luckily
for him his wife Eleanor had a wealthy father who died and
left them a lot of money. James and Eleanor moved to
Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, PA. They are
buried in the Younkin Cemetery there. Listed on the
Census of 1800 there with them is one John McMillen, Esq.
and a Samuel McMillen, whom I think is the sheriff of that
region. My ancestor, Eleanor Bayes' mother was named
Anna Wright McMillen. She named her daughter Eleanor.
I will look up Samuel's date of birth to see if he is the person
that you are looking for. I have lived in PA twice, once out
on the PA mainline in Devon and once in Harrisburg. I hope
to get to Turkeyfoot Township one of these days.

Marilyn

Hi Lisa

tried your email which is no longer working so posting here in hopes you see this.

I just read your 2001 post on rootsweb message board. I have McMillens that I am unable to get any info on prior
to their arrival in PA.
I do know that they came from Antrim Ireland in the late 1800's.
Family Lore tells that they were devout orangemen and this
verifies with the great grandfathers bitterness that caused a life long rift between he and his first born (my mother) as she was born on St. Patrick's day. So his long term resentments may have to do with losses his dad incurred
in Ireland. To my knowledge grandfather was never in Ireland. Anyway was hoping you might have come across
them in your research.
The info I have starts with:
William John McMillen born about 1868. Came from Antrim Ireland. He married Margaret(Maggie) Smith shortly after she arrived in PA also from Antrim. They married April 24, 1893.
They are said to have had 14 children to date I have only found 9 they are as follows.
Thomas Campbell born Oct. 12, 1904 (my grandfather)
Benjamin born abt 1913
Archibald born 11/21/1898 died april 1968
William John Jr. born February 3, 1896
Mary M. born abt 1901
Samuel Dempster born abt 1906
Eliza M. born abt 1909
Rosetta born about 1912
Eliza J. born Sept. 4, 1895 - Apparently Eliza J. was named after her Maternal Grandmother Eliza (mooney) Smith and the Eliza M. was named after her sister who died. They were all born in Pennsylvania in the Allegheney City area which is now Pittsburgh.

I know that Margaret (Smith) McMillen had one sibling who is reported to have died, I believe in Ireland.
I have no parents or siblings for William John Sr. There has
been additional difficulty in tracing this line since I have found them in various records with about all the variations of McMillen - McMillan - McMillin - and even more confusing
McMullen. I have found those variations in the census and most recently in sending for birth records I could only find
Archibald McMullen born to William J. McMullen and Maggie McMullen. born in Allegheny city.
Further forward I have one census showing Thomas Campbell McMillen married to Helen May Arzberger as
employed with the railroad. I know he maintained railroad
employment till his retirement.
Anyway I was wondering if in all the info you have gathered that you might have come across the siblings of William J. or his parents.
Thank You
Cheri

Marilyn--

I have found that many of the early immigrants married brothers and sisters in laws, and other such "relatives". In fact, most of the early family lines I have traces are less like family trees and look more like family BUSHES because of the awkward marriages. Often cousins married as well. Don't rule that out, by any means. Even first cousins--especially early on.

If the family was especially strict on keeping marriages within their own religious faith or ethnic backgrounds, then the marriages were even more entangled. The pool from which to fish for spouses was very shallow. PA was wilderness for a lot longer than we think, and not a lot of immigrants were brave enough to move "out west". I've read in a few sources that is why William Penn succeeded in getting ANY land from England's king, let alone such a large quantity. The king figured it was just a wasteland, really.

As far as the names you left me, I don't recall any off the top of my head, but the McMillan lines (the ones I've traced and the ones you have) still could be linked even though my McMillans (McMillen;McMullen;MacMillan, etc...) came here as Quakers. By the time a few generations passed, many of the younger McMillens left the "fold" and married out of the religion. Often I have found their records further recorded in Methodist, Lutheran and other churches. (Probably the religion of their spouse.)

The name "Anna Wright McMillen" could be her full married name, by the way. Often records used the maiden name as a middle name. Even up to my great-grandmother's generation this was common. So, I'd bet she DID marry a McMillen and was born a Wright (making the idea that she was sister to Nancy Jane Wright likely too).

Where is Turkeyfoot Township, in PA? My family mostly settled in the Eastern (near Harrisburg) part of PA, but some of their McMillen siblings moved as far "west" as Ohio.

You mentioned that your great grandfather moved to Michigan which is of interest to me, as I live in Michigan myself. In fact, I grew up accross the water from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. And, my sister in law is Canadian! Now I am in the western part of Michigan (north of Grand Rapids).

I printed your message so that I can go through my files when I "dig out" and compare your info to what I've found.

Lisa

Jack & Malcolm Eldon McMillen, sister Jewel Sorrel - IL & CO

Seeking info on brothers Jack McMillen, born 15 Apr 1915 in MO, died Jul 1987 in Fort Collins, CO. Brother Malcolm Eldon "Buddy" McMillen, born 12 Dec 1919 in IL, died 5 Aug 1999 in Fort Collins, CO. Buddy was married to a Marie Weaver on 1 Jan 1941 in Clinton, Dewitt County, IL. They had a son called Chuck. Their mother was Minnie Alice Hayes, born in 20 Nov 1898 in TN. Their father was a Carl McMillen. The 1920 census shows Minnie McMillen and both boys living with her parents, Thomas and Florence Hayes, in Rochelle, IL. The 1930 census shows Malcolm living with Thomas and Florence but I have been unable to find either Minnie Alice or Jack on that census. I believe the Carl McMillen that served in WWI and signed up in Duenweg, MO, DOB 7 Apr 1892 and born in Dayton, TN, is the Carl McMillen that was married to Alice. I have no absolute proof this is Jack and Malcolm's father but Minnie Alice's brothers, Herman Hayes (my grandfather) and George Hayes both signed up for WWI and they both signed up in Duenweg. I do not know if Minnie Alice and Carl were divorced or if Carl died. I know that Alice remarried to a Nels Ericson. I have not been able to find where/when Alice died but do know she probably died after 1968.

My info re: Buddy is from his obit which states he was born in Rochelle, IL to "Carl McMillen" and "Alice Minnie Hayes McMillen". His obit states his parents, wife, and brother Jack were both dead. It also states his sister, Jewel Sorrel, preceded him in death. This is the first I ever heard of a sister named Jewel. There is family lore that there was a "Jewel that married a Mexican and was ostracized by the family because of an uncle (probably a great-uncle) that was friends with Pancho Vila". Alice's sister, Gladys Hayes, had a daughter called "Jewell Sorey" and a son, Clyde Raymond Hayes, that survived her and I assumed it was this Jewell that the story referred to. But I have photos of this Jewell so it always puzzled me as it seemed she was present for family get-togethers. Now I have found this second Jewel?

Buddy's obit also says he traveled New England during his teen years with a C&W vaudeville show singing, playing guitar, and doing rope tricks. He once had a radio show on WLS Chicago, was a bookkeeper, finally a mail carrier in Fort Collins.

I am seeking any relatives of/info on/photos of Jack and Buddy McMillen, Alice Hayes McMillen, and on Jewel McMillen (or maiden name could be Ericson) Sorrel. I have quite a bit of family genealogy as well as photos of the Hayes side, including 2 photos of Alice with Buddy. I also have 2 or 3 photos of an unknown male, possibly Jack McMillen with wife and kids, including one with Alice and her mother, Florence Tow/Sharp Hayes, this male, an unknown female, and 2 kids.

If there are any relatives out there then PLEASE contact me - I'd love to share info!
Debra Hayes Brodbeck

Re: John McMillen b.1875 in Missouri - m. Sarah E Miller

Is there a connection? In my family tree, is a James McMillen born in Scotland, m.Sara Jane. One of their children John, m. Sara Jane. I don't have dates. I have been unable to trace this family. Apparently James moved his family out-of-state. If there's a possibility that your John came from NY, I would pursue this with vigor.

I live in NY near New Scotland and Duanesburg. Many members of our tree are from eastern NY.

Glenn gomac@hughes.net

Re: McMillens in MO

My McMillens were from Kentucky and they moved to Clay or Platte Co Missouri. I believe A John and Nancy McMillan found in 1860 in Platte Co. Missouri could be my great grand parents but can't really prove it. My grandmother was born in 1865 in Clay co. Mo. Her name was Katy Ann.
I can't find these McMillan after 1860 but have found some of their children except my grandmother. Grandmother had a brother John and a sister Margaret, and I believe a sister Nancy. Any help would be appeciated.
Thank You,
D. Presley
