New York City McMullens

I'm looking for any information about or descendents of a family of McMullens that lived in New York City in the Chelsea area (West 20th - 30th Streets from 8th to 10th Avenues) in the late 1800s.

What I know:
James McMullen married Ann Jane McLaughlin somewhere, sometime (I have very little info on these two, and would love to have more).
They had 2 children, William J (born in NY, possibly Brooklyn, in about 1858) and Robert (also born in NY but about 1860).
The census says they were in the Chelsea area of Manhattan in both the 1870 census and the 1880 census.

William was my paternal great-grandfather. He was a postal carrier for years, was a president of some sort of postal workers organization, and was supposedly a member of the Emerald Society.
He married Annie Forrest (for more info about the Forrests see that forum - I put a long post out there about them) in 1886 and had 6 children - William J, Thomas F, Sam, Herbert, Edwin, and Forrest. Forrest was my paternal grandfather.

According to my father Bert may have emigrated to Canada to avoid the WW1 draft and Sam was a gambler (horses). Edwin did something with horses in WW1 and ended up as a driver for a rich man in either Westchester or Connecticut.

Annie, my maternal great grandmother, lived with Thomas and his wife Anna in Valley Stream NY until her death.

Any information about these McMullens or the Forrests would be greatly appreciated, particularly the eldest ones (James and Ann Jane).

I would really like to know what happened to Robert, too. I can't find him more recently than 1880 but can't find any death records for him either.
1900 US Census - Everett, WA lists Jacob McMullen, born July 1865, age 34, married 6 years, born Canada, both parents born Ireland, immigrated 1890, foreman on RR (Railroad)
His wife Minnie, born Jan 1871, age 29, born Canada Eng.
Adopted son John Elmer, born June 1894, age 5, born WA.

1910 US Census - Everett, WA
Jacob, age 45, married 16 years, born Canada (Eng), father born Ireland, mother born Ireland, immigrated 1891, asst. millwright, saw mill
Minnie A. age 39, married 16 years, 1 child born, 1 child living, born Canada, parents born Canada, immigrated 1890
J. Elmer, son, age 15, born WA

1920 US Census - Everett, WA
Jacob, age 55, immigrated 1891, born Canada, father born Ireland, mother born Ireland, watchman in a saw mill
Minna A., age 48, born Canada, parents born Canada
Edith M. Miller, charge, age 11, born WA

1930 US Census - Everett, WA
Jacob, age 65, age at first marriage 27, born Canada, father born Scotland, mother born Northern Ireland, watchman lumber mill
Minnie E., age 59, age at first marriage 23, born Canada, parents born Canada

Minnie A. McMullen died in Everett, WA in 1959. Her parents were listed as Thomas Daly and Luisa Beckwith.
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/ViewRecord.aspx?RID=119DE7...

Thomas Daley (25) and Louisa Beckwith (18) were married in Lennox & Addington County, Ontario in 1866. Thomas Daily (30) and Louisa (22), Fred (2) and Elizabeth (3 m, born Jany) were living in Sidney Township, West Hastings County in 1871, but for some reason, Ancestry has this indexed as Marysburgh North, Prince Edward County, which is not what the original census form says. Given that Mrs Minnie McMullen was born in Jan 1871, it is likely that Minnie=Elizabeth. Thomas Dal(e)y and Louisa Beckwith had children in Hastings County in 1875 and 1878. In 1881, Thomas Daily (41), Louisa (32) and several children were living in Trenton, Hastings West. In 1888, they had a son born in Serpent River, Nipissing, Algoma.

In 1900 Thomas Daly (59) and Louisa (50) and several children born after 1880, were living in Everett, WA. They said they immigrated in 1890, which agrees with Minnie McMullen in the 1910 Census. Given, Jacob McMullen immigrated a year later, it looks like Elizabeth=Minnie Daly and Jacob McMullen were married in WA, but their marriage is not listed in the WA digital archives.

Perhaps Jacob’s and Minnie’s obits might tell you a bit more about them.
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/Obituaries.aspx

Minnie’s father Thomas Daly died in 1903. Her mother Loisa Daly died in 1915.
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Search.aspx

Do you know where in Ireland your McMullens came from?

Re: proof mcmullens are from scotland

have been reading these message boards and saw all the requests asking for proof that the mcmullens are from scotland. i have an excellent article from the st petersburg times stating the scotish lineage as fact. also, heritage village in largo, florida has extensive records of the mcmullen family, as well as an original family log cabin that was thankfully saved. this belonged to captain jim mcmullen. additionally, a records search for burke county, georgia, or quitman, georgia might turn up proof. i have also seen the family crest, and an entry from a book tracing family names, that both indicate that the mcmullens can be traced as far back as the 1200-1300's in scotland, and that the name has gone through many transformations over those years. hope this helps.

Re: Revolutionary War Drummer Boy

you are talking about james parramore mcmullen. he came to the colonies as a boy, and joined the revolutionaries. he was in the battle of bunker hill at 16, and also at lexington. that is the only war record i have found so far.

james moved to north carlolina during the war and married sarah minton. they settled in burke county, georgia, had a large plantation, and raised their children, including james jr. james jr married rebecca fain and they had 12 children, including 7 sons (james, william, thomas, daniel, john, david, and malcolm). one of those, james (captain jim) came to rocky point, florida (now tampa) from quitman, georgia to get cured of tuberculosis. he eventually convinced his 6 brothers to move to florida also, and through land grants they were all quite successful. one of their descendants was even a united states congressman. hope this is helpful.

Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
9-14 NOVEMBER 1868
*************************************
DIED -- at his residence, in Castoria Township, San Joaquin county, Nov. 13th, of typhoid fever, Captain John McMULLIN, a native of Maryland, aged 45 years. [The funeral services will take place at the Presbyterian Church, on Sunday (tomorrow), at 2 o'clock p.m.]

DEATH of a PROMINENT CITIZEN -- Captain John McMULLIN, long a resident of San Joaquin county, and a highly respected gentleman, died at his residence in Castoria township, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, of typhoid fever. He was a native of Maryland, aged about 45 years. He came to California in June, 1849, and settled first on Wood's Creek, Tuolumne county, and in 1854 removed to San Joaquin, where he has since resided. Captain McMULLEN [spelled 2 ways] was a gentleman of high character and sterling worth. He leaves a wife and 9 children to mourn his death. The sadness occasioned by the loss of a loving husband and an indulgent father is shared by the community at large, who deeply sympathize with the family in their bereavement. The funeral takes place from the First Presbyterian Church in this city, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

Transcribed by Dee Sardoch
To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/

hi I am Christel McMullen Patel! Nadine, Robert and Brenda who also replied to this thread are my cousins. I'm pretty sure that we are related. Some of our dates and spellings are not the same. However, I think we may be able to sort through some things and help you out. I posted a family tree on familytreemaker.com in 2000ish. Orvil Allen McMullen Sr. is my father we are direct descendants of John A McMullen, Napolean Bonaparte McMullen, and Athena McMullen. His wife's father was born in the US.

But at his point, with the two families arriving 20 years apart, I agree there's no evidence of a connecion between our Claytons.

Cheers,
Laura

I take back what I said about Clayton being an uncommon name. The McMullens are crawling with Claytons. It doesn't meant that your Clayton M and mine aren't related--the name goes back several generations, which might mean they're second cousins. Or worse.

Anyway, William Clayton "Mack" McMullen was born 1869 in Port Hope, Ontario and died 1958 in Los Angeles, California. His parents were Hiram F McMullen (b 1830 Ontario d 1898 Ontrio) and Phebe Bininger (b 1831 Ontario).

There are also a lot of Hirams in this branch of the McMullens.

Cheers,
Laura

Hi Jim I descend from this line through Catherine(Caty) McMullen who md Andrew Gowdy. Would love to see the Bible of McMullen b.& d. My Mother is 96 yrs old in a nursing home in Ashtabula Co, OH. On the OH census either Trumbull co or Ashtabula Co Caty's bro John, who md Eleanor Campbell, was born in Va, but at that time WV was not a state and just called Va or Western Va, so I'm not sure. These families helped to open the West and moved as groups. As they treked from New England to the wilderness, some relatives stayed at certain stops and some moved on. My g-g grandfather, Joseph Gowdy (wf Louisa Andrus/Andrews) went to CA for the gold rush. Louisa stayed in Ashtabula with their children in a log cabin for many years until he returned. This info is in the Ashtabula Pulic Library. Their son, my g-grandf Ceylon Gowdy went to McPherson Kansas after the civil war with his first wf and other family branches. First wf died and he returned to Ashtabula Co md Maria Brown. And their dau Daisy was my grandma. Love to hear from anyone with info on this line.
Elizabeth, I also descend from Neil Mcmullen and Susannah Mann. Their daughter Caty married into Gowdy family. John is Caty's brother and he did marry a Campbell in Trumbull co Ohio. On census it says John was born in Va (but that could maybe be WV) They travelled from Huntingdon Pa to Trumbull co Ohio. if you go on the web and find Goist genealogy they have Neil Mcmullen family listed. I read msg of Jim Kinder and would love to see the book also. These were the pioneers who opened up the west which was Ohio/Indiana etc. pls contact me. Barbara

I am reading these posts and trying to find some common threads such as first names, just as you are doing.
The McMullens in my background are probably from Northern Ireland (but are Roman Cath.) and I believe some of the names are Joseph McMullen (married to a Bridget ??, born circa 1799).
One of those children (not the eldest) was named, "James." James was born in 1830 and married Catharine). They were both born in the U.S. and lived in Allentown, Pa.; they had eight living children named: Joseph, Jane, Catharine, Charles, George, Margaret, James and Peter born bet'n 1860 and 1880.
Two of the girls became Catholic nuns in Philadelphia.

Catherine McMullen (Katie)

Catherine was the daughter of Charles McMullen and Margaret (nee Gallagher). She was born in 1873. She had numerous brothers and sisters including John McMullen (famous via the Catherine Cookson stories). There were brothers Joseph, James and Charles. There were sisters Margaret, Mary and Celia. Possibly there were other siblings too.

Catherine McMullen married John Lowry (or Lowrey) in 1894. They had one boy and two girls. Only one of the girls survived and that was my grandmother. So, Catherine was my great-grandmother.

I was born and educated in South Shields but have lived the past 40 years in Australia. I returned to SS last year to research family history and the above is what I discovered.

I would now very much like to find out more about the family. I can be contacted on my personal email address also - hrstrategies@bigpond.com - and would love to hear from anybody with any additional information regarding this family history.

Kind regards,
Lynda

My great-grandmother was Katherine (Katy) McMullen and I believe she was the sister of John McMullen - her parents were Charles McMullen and Margaret Gallagher. I was in South Shields last year doing family history research to gather the above information. I did not, however, get to establish where Charles and Margaret came from so your information is most interesting. It seems that your husband and I are related.

Katherine McMullen married a John Lowrey in 1894 and they subsequently had 3 children, the only survivor of which was Mary who is my grandmother.

Do you have any further information - eg: what part of Ireland they came from or any other information?

Lynda

Thank you for telling me about your Clayton’s origins. His father Hiram, born in Ontario in 1830 pre-dates the arrival of our Irish born McMullens by 20 years. I have not found your Hiram in the 1891 Census, but other McMullens of a similar vintage, living in Belleville, said their father was born in the US, so it is unlikely there is any relationship.

Thanks.

I know this message is 10 years late(wow!), but I am a direct descendant...I am a great-great grandson of Maggie and John McMullen.

Thanks for responding. The North fits, the names fit. Form of faith is one of the possible predictors, but even that can get mixed over time. My own line was Catholic ( I still am), but branches rolled over to COI in Armoy and Kilkenny, so it would depend how far back we link (if we do?) Have you considered DNA testing?
Greetings. I realize this post is somewhat dated, but my own line McMullen connects to Antrim (Ballycastle/Armoy). Using DNA testing (simple procedure, mailed kit and you swab the inside of your cheeks and mail it back), I was able to locate and connect with ancestors from there in a range of 150 to 360 years. The names you quote: James, Charles and John are predominant in my own line which I have now identified back to 1650 with James McMullen. Contact me for details. Slainte Lyn
