I am also a descendant of James McMurray and his son William. This James, together with his siblings, moved in 1788 or 1789 to Bradford's Mill (now Bradfordsville, Marion County, KY). All of the children left their father, William McMurray's farm on the Cowpasture River in Augusta County (now Botetourt County, VA).

James was married twice in Kentucky, his first wife was Jane McEwee ( or McElroy, I prefer the former). Jane was an orphan, born circa 1772 (based on marriage info). Jane died 06 Oct 1797. Second wife is Margaret (Peggy) Priest Smith, they were married 20 Jan 1799. My ancestor, William McMurray, was the oldest son of Jane & James. Other children of the first marriage was Janet Jane, Thomas, Sally, and James.

If this is the James & William McMurray that you are researching I have ample in formation for you.

You can post on the message board or e-mail me at don@storybookbnb.com or mcmurray.don@gmail.com.

Best regards, Don McMurray

Dear Cecile,
I've been digging in the Ontario Death records on http://pilot.familysearch.org and have some info to share with you as well as questions to ask you. Please contact me. I'm still at the same e-mail address, but if you have lost it reply here, and I'll give it to you again. Priscilla Brown Maybury

Hi Jeff, I think Scott is busy. I don't get much of reply from him. I'm wondering how much you have on the McMurrays. I've been digging around in the Ontario Death Records which are on http://pilot.familysearch.org, trying to piece together the various families further back. I've been able to find who the spouses were for some of the siblings of William (your ancestor) and Margaret (my 2nd great-grandmother), as well as some of their children. This is very tedious so I thought I'd contact you and ask: Can you tell me how many details you have on that family of 11 who came over from Ireland. Do you have Mark's birth date and place and anything on Diana, his wife? Any more details on those 9 other kids?? Thanks for replying!!
Priscilla Brown Maybury in Baltimore,Maryland in the U.S.

I have not found any info about James McMurray, nor do I have hardly anything about William. How are you descended through James? do you have his wife's name or any of their children other than James? Tying to learn more about him is on my To-Do list, but with such a common name, it will not be easy. I have seen some Ancestry trees with James as being b. Scotland, but have not seen any evidence as to that.

Ancestry has 2 James McMurrays in the 1790 census, one in Mecklenburg, NC and one in Camden Dist., SC. Will need to check those further. Do you have any information on this family line?

Cannot get through to your mailbox so am posting here and also on the Bedford Co. website.

When was the 'close of the War of England'- are they referring to the Revolution?

Here is a transcription of a letter seen ~1966:

Part of a letter from Aunt Ibe Raugh [Hepzibah Jeanetta McMurray] to Aunt Mary McMurray [Mary E.McMurray]
Copied by hand c1966; current location of letter, pin, and spoons is unknown.

“…I am also enclosing in same package two old silver spoons and a breast pin that Huldah wanted us to have as there are four of us. Now I have seen them, I am sending them to you three girls.

“They were brought from England by Mary Proctor when she came to the States with her father, General Proctor, at the close of the war. This was father’s [father = Henderson McMurray] mother. The pin had been a clasp to a neck chain but was fitted with a pin and had been used as such for about one hundred years. When Mary died she gave the pin to her daughter Sarah, Huldah’s mother, who took care of her during her last sickness.

“The spoons were also handed down at the same time.

“Huldah also states that James McMurray, father of William McMurray, father of Henderson McMurray, came to America in 1779.

“Well girls, I have had these things for some time but I thought perhaps some of you would come out and I could give them to you all. Huldah did not know how old they really are but we know they were keepsakes one hundred years before the close of the War of England.”
Hi Priscilla,
Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. A few years ago I lost everything in a computer crash had to start from scratch. Then last fall a virus destroyed my computer and I couldn't even trust my back-up cd's, so I got another computer and turfed everything to start fresh. Had the best anti-virus software etc.,etc. but to no avail. Anyway, after 7 years of genealogy lost, I was too dis-heartened to jump back in, but am now making some in-roads. I got as far as Mark McMurray before and the trail went cold. However, I see a lot of new information is available since I quit so I'm starting again. I have a feeling you're beyond what I have(Mark from Ireland 1790-179???) I'll send you what I have in the next day or so. Best regards, Jeff

Re: Katherine Anne McMURRAY (1899-1981) Douro, Peterborough, ON

Hello
My g-grandfather William McMurray and his wife Martha Mulligan lived and were married(?) in Bobcageon and I have been desperately searching for more information about him during and before this time. He was born 1832 in Glasgow. I'm not sure if William emigrated to Canada by himself or came with family.

I'm not sure if your Katherine McMurray is in some way related or not - or of Irish descent.
However - I need to pursue every possible avenue and am hoping you may have some answers to help me knock down my brick wall.
