I think you and I have had some interaction before because I recognize your username. :)

Yes, this was one of those 'whispered family stories' and because of the time frame, it would have been very hush hush.
Laura was born 1887 in July, before Travis married Mary Caroline Gilbert in Dec of 1887.

Those of us on our side had all heard the 'whispered tale' but those who knew for sure all the details are long since gone. One of the horrors of trying to find answers for those of us researching. Different ones of us have connected recently and all had the same story, just diffent pieces of it, but when placed together fit perfectly.

So, you are a g'grandaughter. Do you come out of one of Travis's boys lines?
I am so enjoying finally finding this line as it would be my direct lineage. We were flying blind so long since Laura had been adopted.
Thought you might like to see what Laura looked like as a baby, so it is attached.
Tks!

Travis McMurry and Maggie Roen Renfro

A mystery has been solved, now I am looking for information from anyone who might have it.
Travis McMurry (Decatur/Henderson/Perry counties TN) was married to Mary Caroline Gilbert. Before he married her though, he and his mother were living with the Carringtons as his mother had remarried to a Carrington man.
In the Carrington home there worked a housemaid named Roen Renfro.
Roen and Travis had a daughter (illegitimate) and the daughter born was named Laura Ardella b.1887.

As a descendant of Laura, I am eager to hear from anyone that knows more of this story. We do know that Roen died between 1888-1889, as she does not show up on any census by 1900.
I appreciate any help anyone can give.

greetings - i am in process of mailing copies of the journal to don & pam mcmurry in cedar city, utah and to barbara preston in pagosa springs, colorado. i am confident they will be sharing with all who are related to these families - or better yet, inputting it on a website where all can access it. since i am busy w my work plus research/travel, i have a difficult time getting back to everyone interested - so, good luck - happy searching.
ps - if you cannot get a copy from these people, do email me and ill do best to take care of it. but they both, assured me they would share.

Robin, Does the journal mention that any of the McMurry's come from Rutherford or Burke county NC. I am trying to research the families of Samuel McMurry in that area. My ancestor is Thomas from Blount Co. Alabama and I am always looking for possible parents for him. I also remember my mother saying that there was some connection between McMurry's and West in Blount/Cullman Co AL but she did not know anything about the connection. Thanks

McMurry Generational Journal

i have a generational journal typed by john fletcher mcmurry, shelbina, mo. - titled reminisences, historical & otherwise. i came upon this information in an old trunk of catherine west's that some decadent family member tossed out in a field by a lake in carlsbad, ca. its been stored for near 30 yrs at my moms, and we just came upon it again yesterday. i am lookin for a home to send this info to - i hope it is new info to all you searchers out there.
this typed packet of papers is perhaps 30 - 40 pgs w the ancestor line starting at john mcmurry b. 1752 ireland m. elizabeth bomin - these were the writers great grparents. interspersed between family lines are stories of family settlements, events, and personalities. john/elizabeth came to kentucky 1788 or so - with the writer giving several pgs of details of their experiences.
he then, backs up to the 1500s w the family descending from the earl of murray, stuart family, and robert bruce. (bruce is ify - as my lines lead back to him also - however, there is much controversy on his line:) ............ see, we could be related yet :)

john/elizabeth had william (& others) who m. elizabeth wilson, they had john fletcher - author of this story - who also gives much detail on many your descendants. his last pg is a record of rev. w.w. mcmurrys memorial by j.m. o'bryen in shelbyville, mo.
email me if interested in my find - hope it solves some of the mysteries in the mcmurry family.
robin in s. cal. - corriat@aol.com

That helps a great deal. Still don't know who his parents are, but I found the family on the 1850 Federal Census living in Shenango, Lawrence Co., Pa.
There is a Family Tree which has Maria Filson married to John McMurry. His father is unknown but his mother is a Mohawk Indian -- interesting. Children are: Ivestor, d. in 1857, buried in the Savannah Cem., Lawrence Co., Pa., Emma, 1848-1923, and Eva, b. in 1856.
There is also a newspaper Obit. from the New Castle News, Feb. 7, 1923, on Mrs. Emma A. Trimble. Her parents John McMurry and Maria Filson are said to be pioneers of the area.
We'll keep our eyes and ears open for info. about the parents.
Mike McMurray

Any idea of a geographic location where he was born, lived, died? State, County, or town?
In the lines of McMurry's I'm researching there is a John in every other generation -- it's a very common given name. Having his dates and the name of his wife helps, but location could make the difference.
Is your husband a McMurry? If so, he needs to participate in Y-DNA testing. Contact me privately if you want to know more about this.
Mike McMurray

I have been doing research on the McMurr(a)y family in Pennsylvania. Any chance that your John McMurry is related to Alexander McMurry who arrives in Westmoreland County, PA by the late 1700's. He died in 1838 at Donegal, Westmoreland, PA. Census information indicates that he was probably born in Ireland. He was married to Sarah Clark. Any information would be appreciated.

I'm trying to determine the parentage of Jane McMurry b. abt 1806 NC (probably Rutherford).
I just copied the will of Samuel McMurry dated July 1803. It mentions wife Margret, sons Andrew, James, Samuel, Thomas, and John. It mentions daughters Jean, Margret, Sarah (m. Alexander Baldridge), Elizabeth (m. Henry Callahan), Eleanor, Jane, Mary, and Agnes.
Jane (I believe McMurry) m. Callaway Waldrop. They are found in the 1830 census in Rutherford Co., NC. A few doors away is Margaret McMurry 60-70 years old, so she was b. bet 1760-70... I don't know if this is a wife of one of the sons or the daughter Margret. I don't think it could be Samuel's wife unless he married more than once, and a much younger woman. Other researchers have put the birth date of Elizabeth McMurry Callahan at abt. 1772. Another has Sarah McMurry Baldridge b. bet 1755-1765 and her sister Jane b. bet 1777-1778. [Alexander Baldridge m. #1 Sarah and #2 Jane.] Margret McMurry is the only McMurry in the 1830 census in Rutherford Co., NC. My Jane is probably her daughter... but who is the father?
Has anyone researched this Samuel McMurry line? Especially the sons.. Andrew, James, Samuel, Thomas, and John.
Thanks for any help.

He married Catherine "unknown" and they had at least four children: Katherine, Mary, Blanche and James Thomas. His parents may be Thomas and Catherine McMurray, but I do not have conclusive evidence. I believe that he may have spent the bulk of his later years in Freeport, Stephenson County. Any information would be wonderful!

John McMurray according to the U.S> International Marriage record was born in 1720 in Pennsylvania.
