Our history was supposedly traced back to Judge John McNairy that McNairy, Tn. was named after. The best friend of Andrew Jackson.

John Hamilton McNairy of Upshur Co, TX

Does anyone have a copy of the will of John Hamilton McNairy (1804-1853) of Upshur Co, TX? I am trying to confirm his 11 children by his two wives. He was important enough to have a Texas Historical Marker, but I can't identify all of the children correctly.

Additionally, in the 1850 Upshur County census a son D. H. (21) is shown. Following his name is female C. H. (15). Next is another son L. (16). Is C. H. a daughter OR the wife of D. H.? In 1860 a Caroline McNairy is shown with two young children living in the house hold with William Collier.

My grandgather John Calhoun McNairy was born in Phillidelphia in 1871, parents John C and Eliz McNairy. That was the way it was signed. I know a great deal about Elizabeth Oakford but cannot find out where my grandfathers father went. After John Calhoun was born his father dropped out of the picture and found Elizabeth Oakford married to John C. Adams in Minn in 1874. I am searching for John C. McNairy around 1871 to 1873, where did he go. If dead what did he die of and where is he buried? Thanks Pat patsy96@juno.com

We are writing to eachother on 2 sites. I sent some info. to your email address. Anyhow, Most of what I know about John C, Sr is conjecture. I do know that he settled in Minn. with Elizabeth. this is in my Uncle Harry's writings. I think that he died in Pennsylvania. Perhaps they took a trip to visit Elizabeth's family?? Maybe she wanted to have the baby at her parents home?? I am going to copy everything I have that will apply and mail it TOMORROW. Please let me know if you can add anything to it, after you read it. You have already given me John's middle name! That may help a lot.-Carol

This may be a little confusing. My grandfather John Calhoun McNairy was born in Phillidelphia, Penn. on March 9th 1871. His father was John C. McNairy and his mother was Elizabeth Oakford. It was signed as male born John Calhoun parents John C. and Eliz McNairy. Occupation Gentlemen I have a document saying all of this. I have quite a bit of information on the son John C.McNairy and also his mother Elizabeth Oakford. I was at a stand still about the father John C. because after 1871, Elizabeth Oakford turn up in Minn married to John C. Adams.

John C. and Elizabeth O. McNairy had three children, Reba, 16 1864,in Miss.. Emily O., 11 1869,in Minn.. and John C., 9 1871, in Penn. So John was about 9 when they went to Minn. Look up the 1880 June 4th cencus 1st ward Lake City, County of Wabasha, Minn. You will find John C. Adams and listing of all the children.

I was just told that John C. McNairy died in 1873, didn't say where or of what, and that his parents were Frances McNairy and Mary Boyde of NC. I am hoping to get more information, but any you might have would greatly appreciate it. Be happy to pay for postage and prints.

My files are not organized but when I have put things in order I would be happy to sent them to you. My grandfather John C (I have pictures of him and other ones that I think may be pictures of Elizabeth and ? McNairy or Adams? I have nothing but fun and wonderful things to tell about my grandfather. My sister is eight years older than I am and she remembers him well. As a young couple, he married Blanch, Scott Hill Hunter, they started out in St Louis, MO, two children were born, John C. JR and Evelyn. Evelyn was my mother and John died in France during the war at the age of 17. Well I have gone on quite enough. Let me hear from you. Actually it is most confusing.I have been corresponding with Carol and I am getting a little confused. I am trying to trace my .gg grandfather, the father of my grandfather John c. McNairy. Pat patsy96@juno.com

John c. was married to Martha Elizabeth Brandon in 1848. She died after having 3 children. He married Elizabeth Oakford sometime later. I think I recall that she also had been married before, but I am not sure. I will try to find it. John decided to take Elizabeth north because he said he did not want to lose another wife (The civil War had broke out) Yes, he was a colorful character. Before he left Miss. he bought all his father-in-law's slaves and set them free. He also set his own slaves free. He put his family on a boat going up the Miss. R. and settled in Lake City, Minn. John died in 1873. My Uncle Harry was raised by Elizabeth and her husband , Mr. Adams.

I am a descendant of Francis and Mary through their son, James. His son, John C. migrated with his brothers to Miss. When the Civil War broke out he boarded a ship with his family and moved to Lake City Minn. His son was Bartlett Yancey McNairy, my ggg grandfather. This branch of the McNairys moved to Calif. in the late 1930's. I would love to hear from any McNairys. I am particularly interested in John C and his brothers as there has not been much research done on them. I attended the McNairy family reunion in Greensboro a few years ago, and they had never heard of John C. Once they left N.C. they were sort of lost to the rest of the family.-Carol

Hm... I'm not sure where you fit in. Do you trace yourself back to Frances McNairy of Greensboro N. Carolina? He and his family came from Scotland in pre-Revolution times. I have an ancestor (John C. McNairy) that settled in Minn. at the outbreak of the civil war. I was hoping you were descended from him because he married Elizabeth Oakford when his first wife died and he had a son named John. That would have been 4 generations back from my Dad.

Ric, I wish I could figure out where our lines tie in. Most all of the McNairys go back to Frances McNairy of N.C. Do you have any relatives you could ask about it? Where, exactly did your California relatives settle? I will look at my records some more and see if iI can come up with anything.-Carol

She married my great grandfather Harry G. Lewis (born in 1875 in Greensboro NC) sometime before 1912 (my grandfather was born in 1913 in Greensboro). Any information you might have would be great!

I know my grandfather was born in Phillidelphia and his parents names are on his birth certificate as John C. McNairy and Elizabeth Oakford. I can trace Elizabeth to 1874 where she married Dr. John C. Adams in Minn, in 1874, but I can't find out what happened to her first husband, my grandfather also John C. McNairy. Elizabeth and John also had two daughters, Rebecca born 1864, and Emily O born 1869 and of course my grandfather born in 1871. If you have any information please let me know.
