Many McNetts in the U.S. are descendants of Barnard McNitt (1700-1773) of Palmer, Massachusetts. Several different lines of his descendants adopted the McNett form of the surname. For instance, the Andrew Jackson McNett who lived in New York, Illinois, and Texas was a grandson of Nenjamin McNitt, a brother to my great great great grandfather. Therefore I search both spellings.

Benjamin E McNitt married Mrs Martha Cloores 1871 in Bell Co TX

While researching other surnames in the County Clerk's office located in Belton, Bell County [Central Texas], found McNitt name in Marriage Records Index with reference Volume E, Page 5.

Mr. Benjamin E. McNitt and Mrs. Martha Cloores married 16 April 1871 by M. Whiteley, O.M.G. [Possible Martin Whiteley, Minister] in Bell County, Texas.

So who is this Benjamin E. McNett? What was Martha's maiden name?

Collateral resarch notes indicate:
1. Sylvanus McNett (1808-1866 NY>IL>TX) reported "buried near Nolanville," which is located in Bell County, Texas between Belton and Killeen on US 190.

2. Andrew Jackson McNitt/McNett, Sr. (1836-1909 NY>MI>IL>TX) and family living nearby Lampasas and Burnet Counties between 1870-1871.

3. In 1872 Andrew Jackson McNitt/McNett, Sr. bought land in Lampasas County, Texas, where he built and operated three large lime kilns. The largest kiln, which is still in existence, would yield 500 barrels of quick lime. The market price at the time was $1 per barrel. Many wagons of quicklime were hauled to Lampasas to be used as mortar in the stone buildings.

Wonder if Sylvanus and Benjamin E, McNitt/McNett were looking for limestone sites in Bell County, Texas.

Jacquelyn Marshall

Hello Marilyn,
My name is Matt Arnold and a descendant of Martin Arnold through his son, Nicholas Arnold (b. 1839 to Martin and Elizabeth in Darmstadt, Germany). My father, David Arnold, has been doing a large geneology on our family, but has stopped the line at Martin Arnold (1812-1878). We don't have a lot of information past his family. We have pictures of his grave in Flint and several other pieces of information. Unfortunately, we don't know much about the Eliza Arnold line from Martin. I am related to Martin Arnold through his son, Nicholas Arnold. We know that Nicholas Arnold fought in the U.S. Civil War. We have some of his items from the war. (A real family treasure.) However, I was really interested when I came across your post about having a copy of the Arnold family Bible and some photographs. I would LOVE to see these artifacts from my family's distant past. Please let me know if you would like to share more information about the Arnold family from Darmstadt, Germany (1812). Again, it would be great to see your artifacts. My family currently lives in Indianapolis, IN. I hope to hear from you soon.

I have run into a roadblock with Augustus MCNITT's father Horatio MCNITT b. abt. 1820 and his brother Ira MCNITT b. abt. 1853. I found him in the 1850, 1870 and 1900 census but can't get any earlier than that to find his parents. He was born in Wisconsin. He had a wife Charlotte b. abt. 1824 that showed up in the 1870 Trenton, Dodge CO, Wisconsin census.

The Maquinets are collateral to my line, but I suspect that all the early Maquinets were related. Eleanor Dorthea Maquinet was probably the aunt of Henry Maquinet who married Agnes Dubois and founded the Magnett/McNett line.

I have a scanned copy of research on the Maquinets done by Dr. Cary Anderson. He includes some information about your Eleanor Dorthea Maquinet. If you e-mail me, I will be happy to send you the scans.
Yes, this is definitely the same family! I have just found that both Newton and Elisha are buried in the National Cemetery at Leavenworth, Kansas. Newton died November 7, 1925 and Elisha died November 24, 1922. I think Eliza's husband, David died before the 1860 census. Do you have any information on the adopted daughter of Newton and Susanne Cuvelier McNett? Her name was Roe and she was born in 1878. Thanks so much for your reply.

I have David and Elizabeth(Eliza) which had Elisha, Jasper, Francis, Newton, Tayphe. Not sure if it's the same Newton but the time is about right. I'm still trying to get more info on this family group. My great grandfather is Francis Marion McNett. I think he is the same as Francis from this family group. E-mail me and we'll see what each other has. Teresa

Newton McNett

I am seeking information on the Newton McNett family. He was born November 1844 and was a Civil War Veteran. He married Susanne Elizabeth Cuvelier in 1874. She died in 1893. (Susanne was my GG grandmother's sister.) They had one daughter, Roe, born 1878. He married Corinda Belle Stout about 1897. They had three children, Byron, Raymond and Randall. I am not sure when Newton died, but after 1910 and before 1920. He supposedly died in Soldiers Home in Kansas, but a search there did not locate him. I would love to be in touch with anyone who has knowledge of this family. Thanks so much!
Beverly

MacNett/ MacGNOT James born 1740 NY

Possible Breakthrough regarding JAMES MCNETT/MCNETT/ MCNITT born Jan 1 1739. I had found that no one has yet identified the James McN*tt Family. I think I have... info found in a book "Early Families of Herkimer Co NY by Wm. V.H.Barker" reference number #10011 JAMES MACGNOT (McNutt, MacDal)

James MacGnot was a British soldier stationed in the Mohawk Valley in 1763 when son James Jr was born (out of wedlock) by ELIZABETH BARBARA WEAVER daughter of ANDREAS WEAVER. Lived in the Susquahanna River area in July 1775 (MoHawk Valley in the Revolution, pg 169). [book quote] Assumes he, rather than son was father of Children from 1786 to 1794 - Surname MACGNOT

10012 James b.SAR 30 Apr 1763 (sp Geo Dackstader & w)
10013 Christopel b.GF 15 Sep 1786 (sp Hen Meyer, Elias Bekker)
10014 Elisabeth b. GF 23 Mar 1788 (sp Jac Meyer, Elis Hockstater)
10015 Debald b GF 19 Nov 1789 (sp Theobald Bekker & Cath)
10016 Margaret b GF 02 Apr 1792 (sp Theo Dieterich & Margaret)
10017 Michael b. GF 23 Jul 1794 (sp Mic Meyer , Maria Bekker)

But I personally believe the information should be that James Sr MacGnot/MacNutt m Elizabeth B Weaver and had James Jr MacGnot/McNutt. (the other children/or siblings are questionable to me).

James Jr MacGnot/MacNutt m ?? Mary/Margaret ?? and had a third James MacNutt/McN*tt (b. 1793/1795 - died 1827 NY) who married one Sara/ Sally Lindsey whose daughter Lucetta/Luzetta McNitt married John (Dana) Denny of Jefferson County New York (My line).
This is a long shot, but there was a German speaking George McNett family that came from Rockingham Co., Virginia, into Ohio and then into Indiana. The first George McNett in the family was born 1790 and married Susan Armintrout/Ermentraudt. George's parents were Daniel Maquinet and Anna Maria Depoy, who were part of the Pennsylvania German migration into Virginia. The name Maquinet was mangled so many ways that George started using the name McNett. I don't know much about George's children except that they used the name McNett and some went on to Ohio and Indiana. I suspect, however, that if they were anything like the other Pennsylvania Germans who followed that migration path into Ohio and Indiana, they were still speaking German and marrying German well into the 19th century.

Good luck in your search.

Janice McAlpine

Hi,

Arnie McNett is my cousin. He lived in Hannibal, Mo, at the same time my Lee family did. He could be in his 60s now. If anyone knows Arnie or his family, could they please contact me at jrabena@mcburney.ca Thanks!

Joni
Calgary, Alberta

I know that this is a bit off of the beaten path. I have a relative name of Wilhelmina A C Heckle from PA born about 1854. I noticed that you had a call from a Wilhelmina Heckle from MO. Was curious as to any relation or contact with the Heckles via PA. Mine married to a Henry P. Staving also from PA.
Thanks Bob Marshall

My grand father was George Franklin McNett and Grand Mother was Myrtle Emma HASKINS. She passed away on 09 Sep 1956 from Cancer. I think he passed away in 1930. He was a Fireman in Tahlequah, OK. My father, George Leroy McNett, was born at the firehouse on 31 Jan 1917.

Does anyone have any info about the parents of either one of them. I believe his father was born in Wisconsin and his mother was worn in Minnesota.
