Re: Emaline McPHAIL 1828-1876 Cumberland Co. NC m. William S. SKIPPER 1853, d/o Daniel McPHAIL & Margaret BAKER

I see three possibilities in the 1850 Census, which is a few years before William and Emaline marry. Ancestry's index shows:

Name: William S Skipper
Birth: abt 1823 - North Carolina
Residence: 1850 - Eastern Division, Cumberland, North Carolina
He's living with a family named McMillan, who farm. He's listed as a laborer.

Name: Wm S Skipper
Birth: abt 1822 - North Carolina
Residence: 1850 - Wilmington, New Hanover, North Carolina
Listed as a confectioner, in a household with Martha, 52, his mother? Susan, 28 - wife?, and E. J? Boyd, 14 - ?

Name: William Skipper
Birth: abt 1823 - North Carolina
Residence: 1860 - Neuse River, Johnston, North Carolina
Finally, this could be the family:
Name Age
William Skipper 37
Emiline Skipper 30
Daniel Skipper 4
Margaret McFail 23

He's listed as a cooperer (sic) -- cooper I think. The family next door are distillers, so that would fit. Margaret McFail is "serving." Emaline's sister?

You posted on the McPHAIL board about a McGILLIS, so I can offer you only general help. Once you have done all your American research, then you can use the Canadian Census to locate your man of interest there. Local records might lead you to Scotland -- be sure to check land records, old newspapers, church records, and even nieghbors. People very often moved in groups, although not necessarily all at the same time.

Isabella McPHAIL b. 1829 Barony SCT > Massachusetts > East Nissouri Township ONT CAN d/o Hugh McPHAIL & Mary DOUGLAS

I am researching Isabella McPhail B: Jan 17 1829 Barony, Glasglow Scotland D: Jul 28, 1916 Lakeside, ON Canada.

Her parents were Hugh McPhail and Mary Douglas. She had the following Brothers and Sisters that survived:
Mary McPhail Sep 26 1819 Barony
Flora McPhail 1827 Barony D: 1871 Glasglow
Malcolm McPhail Mar 18 1831 Barony
John McPhail Mar 30 1833 Barony
Agnes McPhail May 14 1838 D: 1864 Lakeside, ON Canada

Isabella married James Burns B: 1819 Sct-1892 Lakeside, ON Ca between 1857 and 1860. It was orginally thought that Isabella immigrated to Canada straight from Sct but new info shows that she immigrated to Massachusetts first and then immigrated to Canada with her sister Agnes after marrying James Burns who was already settled in Lakeside, ON (East Nissouri Township County of Oxford).

Looking for any McPhail info in Massachusetts trying to determine if any of her brothers or sisters immigrated and Isabella and Agnes followed. I believe they still lived there in 1885 as I have a newspaper article that reports that Isabella was away in Massachusetts visiting. James and Isabella possibly married in the State before coming to Canada.

Any info would be helpful and appreciated

My grandfather, Hector MacPhail (1892-1984), was born at Cornaigmore, Tiree to John MacPhail(1867-1940) and Flora MacLean(1863-1934). John and Flora and their family of six children emigrated to Perth County, Ontario, Canada in 1903. They settled near a cousin Malcom Lamond (Lamont). It is reported that the family could only speak Gaelic when they arrived. John's parents were Hector McPhail and Catherine Lamont, and my gr gr gr grandfather's name was John McPhail who was married to Flora McLean. I would also like to find McPhail relatives, possibly the McPhail's of Mull were connected to the McPhail's of Tiree.
Heather (McPhail) Burrow

McPHAILs and "Rescue" "Home Child" - Ernest J. McPHAIL > Canada

Bill, here is an article that may be of interest to your readers. Anyone who cannot find there parents/grandparents, may want to look here for the answer. The home is now under the control of the Bernardo's agency for adoption. http://www.facebook.com/l/77b84;www.barnardos.org....uk/

Ernest J. McPhail: It is believed, was one of the 'Home Children' , a product of child migration to Canada. Child migration to Canada was a regular, but small-scale feature of Catholic 'rescue' for deprived British children from 1872 until 1930. The migration to Canada continued until the Depression in 1930 when the Canadian government finally refused entry to unaccompanied children. Catholic caregivers then turned their attention to Australia as a possible destination for the youngsters.
Father J. Nugent of Liverpool headed the first Catholic organization to send children to Canada. He made arrangements through parish priests to place the children with local families in Quebec and Ontario. In 1874, Cardinal Manning started the 'Cursade of Rescue' within the Archdiocese of Westminster and under Father Richard Seddon, children were sent to the eastern townships of Quebec and the Ottawa area. In another part of London, Father A. Douglas, Manager of St. Vincent's Orphanage, placed some of his older boys in the prairie provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In 1899, Catholic child migration was coordinated from the Westminster 'Crusade of Rescue' and a central receiving institution, St. George's Home, was established in Montreal and managed by the Sisters of Charity. The home provided the focus for juvenile emigration until it was closed in 1935. Overall, some 5.000 children were sent to Canada by Catholic organizations in London during the heyday of child emigration, about 5 - 8% of the total. (unconfirmed, but a very close match)
Credits: National Archives of Canada

Re: McPHAIL - book Agnes MacPhail and the Politics of Equality by Terry Crowley

dear Bill;

I can shed a bit of light on your more immediate relatives by suggesting that you check out a book, called "Agnes MacPhail and the Politics of Equality" by Terry Crowley, if you haven't already.

I also learned some details from my dad, before he passed away in his sleep this past Dec. 2nd, 2002, on his 91st birthday.

For the record, your great, great grandfather John MacPhail was born in Tiree, Scotland; and moved with his wife Christina McFadyen and the three older sons, John (Ian Mohr) - born March 2, 1856, Dan - born Jan. 18, 1854 & Alexander - born Feb. 18, 1859, to Southern Ontario near Guelph.

They later moved north to Cloudslee, a rural community near Bruce Mines, about 40 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie in Northern Ontario; where they had a girl & three more boys: Jessie - born Apr. 1, 1867, Hector - born 1865, Lachlann - born & John (Ian Vich) - both born Apr. 1 1867.

Alexander settled in Dundalk, where he met his wife, Jean Jack, who had moved there with her parents, also from Scotland.

Jean & Alexander eventually produced twelve children; one of them, I assume, was Archibald MacPhail - born 1858.

Their son Dougald MacPhail - born 1864, married Henrietta Campbell; who also lived in Dundalk with her parents, John Campbell & Jean Black.

That's very intersting how Dougald, & Achie for that matter, had two grandmothers, Jean Jack & Jean Black.

Henrietta & Dougald eventually had three daughters; Agnes - born March 24, 1890 (never married), Gertha (Reany) & Lilly (Bailey).

The family later moved to a nicer farm near Flesherton.

Apparently, Alexander MacPhail died in Sault Ste. Marie on Feb. 27, 1926.

His brother, my great-grandfather, Donald Paul (Dan) MacPhail passed away in the Soo, the year before, on Apr.1, 1925.

Dan had married Margaret Ellen Annis, who had a United Empire Loyalist father, who had left the States & settled in Whitby & an Ojibwa mother.

They had a son & two daughters: my grandfather, John Alexander - born Jan. 7, 1878, Christina - born Apr. 15, 1881 & Maud - born June 25, 1882.

John Alexander McPhail married Lorraine Alexandria Bole (Scots - Ojibwa - Huguenot French) and settled in Sault Ste. Marie; where they raised three daughters & one son: Mary Ellen, Doris Lorraine, John Donald & Sally Christina.

John Donald married Shirley Grace Cook and raised two sons & a daughter: Ian Douglas Carlyle, Derek Stephen Alastair & Hilary Leah Elaine McPhail.

I am the only one to have married; Dawn Louise Zowtuck, now deceased, having produced a daughter & a son: Zingarro Mariko McPhail & Shawn Royston McPhail.

Welcome to the family, cousin!
Steve McP

yours truly,

dear sandra eversole;

sorry for taking so long to get back to you; but, it took me a long while to replace the battery that crapped out in my laptop.

one of the brothers of my great grandfather macphail's had a son named "dougald".

he became the father of agnes macphail, the first female canadian member of parliament.

i'm sure that there was a previous "dougal/dougald" in the family; as those guys weren't particularly original in the given names they would chose.

i look forward to hear from you as i'm happy to connect with other clan members.

wind in your sails,
stephen mcp

That's a great story! When you mentioned the McCleans, it rang a bell because my ancestor, Dougal McPhail and his family moved from Scotland to Ireland, then to North Carolina with the McCleans. Do you have a Dougal in your hat?

McPHAIL / MacPHAIL from Hebrides Islands, Scotland

My full name is Derek Stephen Alastair McPhail & I currently live in Toronto, ON.

I have been able to trace my father's family (originally MacPhail) back through the Hebrides Islands (Tiree & Mull) in southwestern Scotland; and, finally to the Isle of Lewis, in the northwest.

apparently, a Norwegian prince, Pall Balkason (son of Balki), who was the sherrif of the isle of Skye in the mid-1300's; had three sons: Leod, Pal & Alghair.

The sons of Leod became the MacLeods.

The sons of Pal (or Pall) became the MacPhails

Apparently, Alghair had no descendents.

I learned this from the "Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness".

My father, John Donald McPhail, was the son of John Alexander McPhail; who was the son of Donald (Dan) Paul McPhail; who was the son of John McPhail & the brother of Alexander (your great, great grandfather), Ian Mohr, Lachlan, Jessie, Hector & Ian Vich McPhail.

They "dropped the a (in Mac) in the ocean", as the say.

Our great, great, great grandfather John MacPhail was born in Tiree; and Christina McFadyen, who he married, was born in Ardgour, Mull.

His father was named Hector MacPhail, born 1795 in Mull; and married Janet (Jessie) McLean (Duart), also born in Mull.

Hector's father was Donald MacPhail; and, had brothers named Norman & Donald.

Hector's grandfather was also named Norman MacPhail;
born in Lewis Island; son of John Roy MacPhail; who married the niece of his enemy Donald Cam MacAulay.

Norman was named after Norman MacLeod; who had married Donald Cam MacAulay's sister, who's name I don't know.

But, they were the parents of John Roy's wife, who's name I don't know either.

There is a long winded story about John Roy MacPhail, his uncle Houcheon & his buddy, William Moray (Murray); who fled to Lewis after a bar room brawl, that became know as "The Pape Riot in Dornoch, July 1st, 1608".

William murdered Charles Pape, who was the corrupt, but influential, Sherrif-Clerk of Sutherland; and, John Roy & uncle Houcheon punched the crap out of Charles' two equally corrupt brother's, William, minister of Dornoch & Thomas, minister of Rogart.

William Moray (Murray) was a blacksmith & many of his descendents on Lewis became MacPhails; and, many of John Roy's descendents became Murrays.

I think I will have to write a feature film screenplay about those lads.

yours truly,
D.S.A.McPhail
ruth mcphail jerrells

Ruth died jan 10 on a Sunday in 1960 in Marion Illinois. She was married to Ray Jerrells Jr. Her obit is under the name of Jerrells.
I do believe according to the 1930 census that Ruth is the dau of Emra and Eva McPhail although in her obit her parents are referred to as Mr.and Mrs. Peter McPhail.
the census has this: Emra C McPhail age 28 born in Illinois but father born in Kentucky, Eva age 24 born in Alabama, Ruth age 4 and Jean S.age 2 both born in Ill.
Emra died Oct 1976 and Eva a month earlier. Both in Royalton, Illinois. There is also a Loren L McPhail of same town who died May of 1990.
--------
Might be worth noting for those researching McPhail name that his neighbor is Daniel McPhail born in Kentucky age 60 and mother Mary (very blurry) born in Illinois. sons Lester, Ray,Lewis. I hasten to add all the boys names are blurry and could possibly be spelled differently.

In researching the Jerrell name I think Ruth McPhail went on to marry Ray Jerrell mentioned above.

Anyone out there know of a Jessie McPhail or her daughter Ellenor McPhail from Glasgow, SCT? (McPhail is also spelled McPhale on some of the photos I have, and a couple spellings of Ellenor as well)

Apparently my great grandmother Jessie O'Brien (nee McInnes) had been over to Glasgow to visit them in 1964, and went again for Ellenor's wedding June 18,1971. The bridesmaid's names were Sandra, Carole & Gail. No idea who Ellenor McPhail married, or what Jessie's husband's name was. My grandmother swore these ladies were related somehow, just not sure how.

Please check out the following photos. I would really like to get to the bottom of this.
