I am researching my grandmother's life. She was born in 1887 in west Derby, Liverpool. Her mother was Agnes Potter, no father on the birth certificate but I wish to know why the MacPhearson name was on the birth certificate and not my great grandmother's name. I also believe that the MacPhearson's gave some land in Australia to her relatives the Isley family, where my great grandmother emigrated to and died there.

Thank you to all who replied thru the board and directly.
The only info I had to start with was that Archibald McPherson was born in Owen Sound, Ontario in 1863 and that his father may have been married previously and that his mother may have died when Archibald was quite young. If anyone has any ideas in Scotland or Canada about the family I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks again Murray

He had one sister don't know her name only that she was older. His name was Clifford j Smith, he got into trouble with the law because of someone else with the same name in Washington or Oregon area. He got married to Evelyn in Washington or Oregon. Clifford then changed his last name to Gaylin in the 1935-1940 time frame.
he said that they are black irish if that helps.
The IGI has the marriage of a James McPHERSON to an Agnes TAYLOR 16 DEC 1848 at Inverkeithny, Banffshire, Scotland.

If James and Agnes had a third daughter, I would expect that she would have been named after her mother (including her mother's maiden surname as a middle name).

Try searching for them in the 1861 Census index on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

A quick check of the IGI did not find the baptism of a Christina McPHERSON with those parents for +/- 5 years around 1853.

Do you know their religion?
Perhaps they were Roman Catholic?

They could have come from anywhere in Scotland.

Advice for someone researching a grand parent.

Jesse Mcphearson is a family name on my McP side. I can't help you but I can give you advice. Check out the census and try to contact as many relitives as you can and try to solisit help. Marriage applications usually have the parents names. Try to find the oldest members of your clan and try to pick their brains. Also see if the have old photos. Many people throw out unidentified photos. DON'T DO THAT! You will be completely amazed at what a lot of hard work can do. Traits can be traced through family generations if you have a couple of generations.

I have been able to trace traits back to before photos. I can trace my eyes back to Sir Ewan/Ewen Cameron born a little after 1600! His daughter married the first "Cluny McPherson". Cluny is the title of the chief of the McPhersons. The name refers to Cluny Castle that Lauchlan inherited from Duncan Macintosh along with the chieftanship for the Clan Chattan. Chattan is a federation of Clans. The only person more powerful than its chief was the King. This last point could be argued except on a McPherson board!
I mention all this because my line lived near Dunbar Scotland until the mid 1800's. By 1900 not one was left. They went to the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zeland, France, India and I am sure many other places. We could very easliy be related. Oh, our Jessie was for a Jessie Anderson born about 1800.
