Hi there
I'm looking for James McPhie. He was likely born in Ireland (as was his wife). He lived in Gallowgate in Glasgow Scotland. His wife was often ill in later life. He has at least one child, John. John married Isabella Anderson and they had four children, John, Elizabeth, Isabel and Letitia.

James McPhie was my great-grandfather, so he would have lived around the turn of the 20th century.

I have the following information on an Alexander McPhie and Charlotte Gilfillan. This couple had a son, John, born May 14, 1809, in Parkhead, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was one of 14 children. John married Maria Martin May 2, 1847, in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died in Utah March 15, 1882. John and Maria had 8 children. Their son Martin McPhie was born in 1859. He married Sarah Cain. Their daughter Elizabeth Craig McPhie married James Heber Hay.They had two daughters - one, Elizabeth Jane Hay married Dean Harding ZoBell. Jane and Dean's daughter Anne is my daughter-in-law. I am looking for additional information on Alexander McPhie and Charlote Gilfillan's descendants. There is a lady in Canada, named Jan, that I have corresponded with quite a few times, maybe she would have a lead (she is researching the same spelling of McPhie that we are), her e-mail is: jnsten@telus.net
Then there is a Russ McGillivray doing research (various spellings of McPhie, McPhee etc) his e-mail is: russmcgillivray@hotmail.com and there is a DR MacPhee (various spellings too) and his e-mail is: drmac@argonet.co.uk (I hope one of them has a lead that will give you MORE hope about your "missing person")

Have you been on the MacFie Clan website? It's very interesting, and gives quite the history of the clan.

Keep in mind that there can be 'tons' of different spellings for the last name. This is something I just found out last year. I thought it had to be exact or that it wasn't the same person.

Oh yes ONE last tip, there is a forum on the net the e-mail there is SCT-ISLAY-D-request@rootsweb.com (that is wonderful) I have got a lot of information from them. You can send out a request and they all reply back to you. You might want to give that a try too, if you haven't already.

This is my line! I have just begun to research my grandmother Maria McPhie's ancestory. It is so fun. I live in Argyle, Texas,,,and have really had fun learning that Argyle, Scottland is where many of my ancestors came from. I have basically downloaded all the info from the LDS site, but need to branch out now, and would love help.

THE MCPHIE FAMILY ORIGINATED IN CLONSAY IN SCOTLAND.It is basically deserted now.

Hi there. I've been looking for the same Charles McPhie from Islay that you've been searching for. Have you had any luck? I think we might be fairly close relations since I am a decendant from Daniel Murchie McPhie (my great-grandfather). His son (my grandfather) Joseph Marshall McPhie is still living.

Anyway I'm planning a trip to Scotland in the fall, and I'd be interested to know if there's anywhere I might go to check something out. Do let me know.

MacPhee / McPhie family from Lanarkshire

My greatgrandmother was Margaret Sarah Foryst Prentice Gilfillan MacPhee, born 1852? in Rutherglen in Lanarkshire, Scotland. She died in 1951 in Centerville, Iowa.

Apparently Margaret was raised in Scotland by James MacPhee or McPhie and Christina Robertson. My Mitchell family said that Margaret's father's first name was Alexander and that Margaret lost her mother early in her childhood, but my family's oral history has not been very reliable.

I have used Intenet records to stitch together Margaret's family tree which--no surprise--includes these families: Forrest, Prentice, Gilfillan and Robertson.

I would appreciate information about Margaret's families and some solid information about the names of her parents. I knew Margaret fairly well and have bits and pieces about MacPhees in Iowa. I have photos of Margaret, one from Coatbridge in the U.K..

Yes I do have a Gilfillan (Charlotte) in my McPhie line. It dates back to around 1797 for her birth. If you want more information, please contact me again, if you think there may be a conneciton.

Sorry do not have any info for you ,that I am aware of.
At this stage there does not appear to be a link.My Alexander McPhee, in following Scottish naming tradition, being the second born son, was was named after his maternal grandfather, Alexander, and unusually was also given his surname, thus he was Alexander McQueen McPhee. Alexanders father Neil McFie was born in Killchoman, @1810 Isle of Islay, son of Angus and Agnes McPhee(Ferguson).

Your posting interested me because my great-grandmother was Margaret Sarah Foryst Prentice Gilfillan MacPhee (1852-1951) from Lanarkshire in Scotland. I have found her Prentice, Foryst and perhaps her MacPhee/Macfee ancestors, but not the Gilfillans. Do any of these last names connect with your family?

I notice you spell your name McPhie. My ggrandmother was Margaret MacPhie from Tide Head, NB. Her father was John MacPhie from PEI and later, Minnesota and Montana. Her mother was Isabella Christopher Ferguson MacPhie from Tide Head, NB. Margaret had two younger brothers, Robert and Alexander. Were your ancestors from Tide Head or PEI? I don't remember which one of the brothers wound up in Idaho and I think the other remained in Canada until his death. Any connection, do you think?

Thanks for the reply. The Alexander McPhie I have was born in 1769..Bowmore Parish ,I.Scotland. He was married to Charlotte Gilifillan, born 1776. His father was Charles McPhie ..born 1747 Islay Island, Scotland. Charles was married to Catherine Campbell. My Grandfather Robert McPhie's father was also named Charles McPhie.
Born 1855 Crosslee.,H. Scotland. Married to Jane Rodgers Dickie. I have hunted for Robert for many years, and just about decided to forget it...you have renewed my faith ... hope you can help.

My Grandfather was Robert McPhie. His parents were Charles McPhie and Jane Rodgers Dickie..both from Crosslee, Scotland. I cannot find any information on Robert. He divorced my Grandmother, Elsie Mary Kershaw and no one seems to know what happened to him. If you can help I would be ever so grateful.

Looking for details on the following family:

Malcolm MCPHIE born in 1780 in Kilchoman on the Isle of Islay, Argyll married Marrion MCPHIE nee SHAW * around 1800, presumably on Islay. The couple had one known son, Archibald MCPHIE.

Archibald MCPHIE, was born on 15th August 1804 in the Highlands of Scotland according to his gravestone in Round Plains, Adaminaby, NSW. However, the New South Wales (NSW) immigration records show his age as 39 years in 1849 suggesting a birth date of of 1809 - this was probably done in order to fit the immigration requirements for assisted migrants. The shipping records indicate his native place as Kilchoman, Isle of Islay, Argyle (Arglyeshire), Scotland.

On 25th November 1831 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, Archibald MCPHIE, aged about 27 years, married Janet MCPHIE nee GENTLES, aged about 22 years, daugher of John GENTLES, Labourer, and Mary GENTLES nee GIBB.

As neither of Archibald MCPHIE's parents appear on the ships list "The Walter Morrice"with their son, his wife and their children, it can be assumed that they were either deceased prior to the immigration to Australia, or remained in Scotland in either Islay or Alloa.

* As recorded on son Archibald MCPHIE's death certificate, however no record of the marriage has been found to date by family researchers.
