Bernard C. McQuaide, 83, of Salem Township, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, peacefully, in his home, with his family at his side. He resided and worked as a dairy farmer in Salem Township and was an Army veteran, serving as a forward observer in field artillery during World War II. He was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Salem Township, a son of the late J. Emmons and Rena Elwood McQuaide. Besides his parents, Bernard was predeceased by a grandson, Jared James Bates; a brother, Ray McQuaide; and sister, Betty McQuaide. He looked forward to spring to begin planting his gardens, enjoyed hunting, his arrowhead collection and most of all, reading and playing tractors and games with his grandchildren. He joined the Poke Run Presbyterian Church in 1939, where he served as a trustee and was ordained as an elder in 1971. He was a member of the NRA, the National Republican Party, Agway Cooperative, Slickville American Legion Post 18, director for Apollo Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and a member of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lois Jean Buckley McQuaide; children, Renee Bates and her husband, James G., of Stoneboro, Sheree Wagner and her husband, John E., of Saltsburg, Jodee LaCelle and her husband, James, of Mexico, N.Y., Curtis McQuaide Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Saltsburg, and Marnee Jean Gormley and her husband, James, of Cochranton; grandchildren, Jessi Lynn Willaman and her husband, Ben, Brittany Bates, Thomas LaCelle, Rachel, Miles, Thaddeus, Conrad, Veronica, Eli, Clare and Monica McQuaide, Seneca, Sylvan, Samara, Sawyer and Shilah Gormley; brothers, James E. McQuaide, of Saltsburg, John R. McQuaide and his wife, Janet, of Clarksburg; and a sister, Eleanor Zerbini and her husband, Jack, of Saltsburg; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. McQuaide's family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the BASH-NIED FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, 724-468-8381. Services will be held at noon Saturday at Poke Run Presbyterian Church, 1091 Poke Run Church Road, Apollo 15613, with the Rev. Peter Goetschius officiating. By the family's request, everyone is to meet at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. McQuaide's memory to the church.
