Apparently, according to my handy-dandy Family Tree software program, we are fourth cousins, 1x removed. John McQueen was 4th great grandfather and his son, William (your gx(?)uncle) was my 3rd great grandfather. Both brothers, William and George, emigrated to Washington Territory in the 1800's (as you likely already know) and settled in the Whitman County area. I viewed the picture you posted of George on your tree and was interested in the fact that I have similar facial structure and eyes. I was born in Spokane in 1961 and then made a ward of the state by my grandfather, Dan C. McQueen - because I was adopted and my adoptive parents had no information on my biological family, it took me a very long time to learn anything about my geneaology. I am very greatful to Maurice Woehrle for having an extensive history through his Brooner (Brunner/Bruner) line - which is also my line through my great grandmother, Esther Ruth Wood McQueen (Dan's mother). He already had a plethora of info on the Brooner's and that gave me more than one gateway ancestor and finally a link to a very in-depth family history.

Anyway - I am wondering where you are currently...in Washington or elsewhere? Have you known any of the other Eastern Washington McQueens? The history I have is very spotty as Dan was never forthcoming about what he did know. Unfortunately, he died last year and so that link is now forever broken as far as any oral history I could garner.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have a Robert MacQueen of Berwick upon Tweed and Coldstream in the English / Scottish border areas listed as living in "the Americas" in 1796.

The man he was apprenticed to was a carpenter called John Steele and he is listed as being in Jamaica. It's possible that Robert went with them and wonder if anyone has any ideas or thoughts?

Andrew

I am seeking info on my husband's family. His ancestor is also Thomas "the hunter" McQueen who married Barbara (Marie) Wills. I would like to know when and where they married. Where they are buried. If they can be found in the census (which state) and a list of all their children. My husband's grandmother was Bertha McQueen, who married Jesse Heath.
I have no pictures of any McQueens and would love to see some. Do you have any stories about the McQueens? Was Thomas McQueen the 1st ancestor to come to the US on this line? I have no information on any Wills either.
Thank you. Cynthia Hubbartt

Clarinda is the county seat of Page County.

My parents grew up in Clarinda and I was even born there. I'm guessing Rosehill Cemetary is about 10 miles north of Clarinda on the west side. There is a rural church there with a very old graveyard. My McQueens and Muckey's are buried there.

Question.
Are you sure Sandy MCQUEEN was the male, after all if he married Flora McGirt, wouldn't the children's names be MCQUEEN not MCGIRT?? Unless Flora was married before to a McGirt and the children belong to this first husband.

John "Peter" McQueen

In the History of Washington County, NY we find information on a "Peter McQueen" who arrived in Washington County at the same time as William Reid (1764) from the same town in Scotland (Comrie, Perthshire). Peter drown himself in the mill pond at Fitch's Point in the town of Salem, Washington County, NY when his sons John Jr., Alexander and Daniel were accused of stealing from a mill.

I believe Peter McQueen's full name was John Peter McQueen and he went by "Peter." His wife's name was Catherine according to Peter's letter of administration (LOA) and deeds from Washington County. In Peter's LOA it names the following adminitrators: Catherin his wife the relict, John his son and Alexander GAULT.

I believe Alexander Gault was Catherine's brother and they are both children of Alexander Gault Sr. and his wife Rachel.

After Peter drown, charges were dropped against his sons who moved west. John Jr. and Alexander moved to Milton, Saratoga County, NY and Peter and Daniel moved to Camillus, Onondaga County, NY.

DNA evidence shows Peter (Jr.) and Daniel were brothers.

Evidence connects Daniel from Washington County, NY to Onondaga County, NY to St. Clair County, NY.

Other families made the same migration including the WARD, ROBERTSON, LOWE, STEWART and MCQUEEN families.

Jeff McQueen
MCQUEEN327@aol.com
Re: Abram Racey McQUEEN & Elizabeth 'Betsy' HOPKINS - connection to Capt. Daniel & Jane STEWART McQUEEN?

Abram Racey McQueen (husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" Hopkins is the first cousin of Captain Daniel McQueen (husband of Jane Stewart).

Abram Racey McQueen's parents were Peter McQueen and Emma Racey (Peter's first wife. Peter's second wife was Elizabeth "Betsey" Bowman). Captain Daniel McQueen's parents were Daniel McQueen Sr. and Catherine Lambertson. Peter and Daniel Sr. were brothers and sons of John "Peter" McQueen, a miller, who arrived in 1764 in the town of Salem, Washington County, New York, from Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. John "Peter" McQueen served under Col. John Williams during the American Revolution.

Descendents of Abram Racey McQueen and Peter McQueen joined the McQueen DNA Study at Ancestry.com and their DNA match 43 of 43 markers (100%). No question they are related.

After the death of John "Peter" McQueen (who drown himself at Fitch's Point, Washington County, NY) his sons: John Jr., Alexander, Peter and Daniel moved west. John Jr. and Alexander moved to Milton, Saratoga County, NY and Peter and Daniel moved to Camillus, Onondaga County, NY.

Peter stayed and died in Onondaga County. After his death his children moved further west to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.

Daniel moved to St. Clair County with his mother in law and sisters in law. Daniel Sr.'s wife Catherine may have died in Onondaga County. Catherine's sisters married men in St. Clair County, Michigan. Daniel Sr. is believed to be buried in Clarkes Private Cemetery in St. Clair County, MI. Also buried in this cemetery are the following children of Daniel Sr.: John M.McQueen, Jacob McQueen and Nancy (McQueen) Robertson and her husband John M. Robertson.

Captain Daniel McQueen is buried with his wife and family in Oaklawn Cemetery, Algonac, St. Clair County, Michigan.

Abram Racey is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Grant County, Iowa.

It appears the following Scottish families migrated with each other from Scotland to Washignton County, New York and St. Clair County, Michigan: MCQUEEN, LOWE, ROBERTSON, COTTRELL, STEWART and MUNRO. The WARD family also seems to have migrated from Washngton County, NY to St. Clair County, MI. The HOPKINS family migrated from Washington County to Onondaga County, NY.

I would have to say that they never got married. In the time frame you are talking about, a woman keeping her own name is unheard of. However, men made promises that weren't kept and women had children out of wedlock, just as they do now. No offense. I found through a court case where my 2 great grandmother had had 2 daughters to an unknown father. If I had not seen the court case I would not have known, it was not something the family "knew". Check court records, there may be a case concerning the father or his estate providing for the children.

That is a good question and one I had asked myself. I had talked to a few family members and asked why Flora's last name was not McQueen. From what I was told, she actually kept her last name. Also, on the death certificate of their son, Nick McGirt, Sandy McQueen is listed as the father.

Thinking about it, I do wonder if something happened to Sandy McQueen and Flora went back to using her maiden name and just gave the children her name.
