Ben,
I am going to Toledo this week. Need Julia's death date. I am going to check the cematery records for her plot no. It may be near the Lint sites. There is a grave in with Camerons that just says mother on it. It has the same marker as the others. I am also going to get a death certificate for her. I still have not been able to find much on Thomas. I believe you sent me some info on him some time ago about him having the first sawmill in Berlin. Could you send that to me again. I can't find anything since I moved. My daughter just threw evrything in boxes, still haven't sorted it all out. Do you have the obit on her? Did it mention any siblings? I will look at the library for any other news articles.
As for Thomas I was checking the census for 1840 and believe that the Jane McQuiston in Holmes co, can't be Thomas's wife. She had another small child, after Thomas died and the age is much younger then the other census gave. I wonder if this could be maybe James's wife. It is possilble that with him traveling that she would be listed as the head of household. Also , John Lint(Matilda McQuiston) is in Toledo in 1880 census with his second daughter. I am going to see if there is any info from this. Anyway, I am going to see what Lucas Co has, sometimes they have stuff from other co. If there anything else send me the info.

Thanks:
Sherry

Ben, I have been doing some research and there are some things that don't add up.
1. First there is no way that the Jane McQuiston in the 1840 census of Holmes co is Thomas's wife. Johnathon was born about 1816, where as Jane would have been born a year earlier.
2. If Jane was Thomas's wife, she was having children after his death in 1833. There is several children listed in 1840 as under 5.
3. Is it possible that there was another Jane maybe married to James or another unnamed brother that was never around during the census taking. This would explain why her son George stays living next Johnathon.
4. I am increasingly curios why there is no graves in Holmes, Wayne, Tuskawaras, and Coshockton co. for the McQuistons.
5. I am almost certain that the Thomas of Holmes co Is the same Thomas McQuiston born 1778 in Westmoreland co, Pa. The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas. And the brother of John McQuiston who settled in Tuskawaras co. Curiously both men died just days apart from each other. All the info for either Thomas stop and dry up. Thomas of 1778 dries up after a will is signed by Jonathon and his wife. then Thomas of Holmes co shows up in the 1820 census.
The more I search the more confused I get. Is there any thing new you have.

Sherry:
Linda, Have you found out any more on this Joseph. I believe some how they are all related to Thomas McQuiston, born 1750 in Ireland. My Thomas McQuiston died in 1833 in Berlin, Holmes Co, Oh. I believe He (My Thomas ) is either a brother of Or cousin of John McQuiston died 1833 in Tuskarawas, Oh. I was at the Holmes Co library last year and there is no graves of McQuistons in These counties nor any surrounding co. I have yet to check cemeteries in Pa, where they could have went back for buriel. We know that Thomas had several children, Matilda (ancester), John, James Ezra, Julia( Bens ancester), and there are a few others. It is possilble that all of Thomas McQuistons(1750) have not been listed. I think the answers are in PA. If you can help with anything please let me know. For this is my next trip.
Sherry Hofbauer

I have listed most of the Mcquiston's buried in Sherman Cemetery elsewhere on this board. Do a search for Doyle and I'm sure you'll find it.

I ran across something that may be of interest to you. Hubert Doyle and Susan Bauer(Bower) had a son named Clarence Sylvester Doyle. He married first Nellie Fawn. They had a daughter in 1909 named Beatrice A. who married one Michael Hofbauer! Beatrice is listed as the informant on her mother's death certificate in 1963. Evidently both Beatrice and Michael passed away in Orange City, Volusia County, FL in the early 1980's (SSDI).

Also, Alvin Doyle is buried in Ft Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg, OH, along with his wife Rose B.(Bauer)Doyle.

It will be interesting to know which Doyle Boys your father and uncle remember.

Ben

Sherry,

I just happened to check this site today, as I haven't in awhile, an lo and behold, you wrote! Amazing.

Julia's obituary mentions that she was to be buried in the North Oregon Cemetery. I assume that she is there, w/o a headstone.

About half of Julia Ann McQuiston and Joshua Doyle's children are buried in Paulding County, OH. A few of them are still unknown to me where they are buried.

My G-G Granfather James Monroe Doyle is buried in Sherman Cemetery in Paulding County. He passed away in 1942. I wish my grandmother and her 13 siblings would have asked a few more questions, if you know what I mean. He died at age 89. My grandmother was 32 by that time. There are some McQuistons from Holmes County buried in this cemetery, as well.

As for the other sons, George,(the eldest son)supposedly worked on Lake Michigan (per my great-uncle James Harvey Doyle), death/burial unknown. Uncle Jim had a gold ring that his grandfather (James Monroe)had given to him. He said that it belonged to his brother, George Doyle. Uncle Jim has since passed on.

Hubert (Hugh) Doyle is buried in North Oregon Cemetery, I believe. He died about 1929.

Alvin is buried in a cemetery in Perrysburg, OH, along with his wife. He died about 1930.

As for the daughters, several are buried in Paulding County, OH, the rest unbeknownst to me. Sarah Jane married William Fryman and is buried in Sherman Cemetery. Martha Jane married Calvin Flemming and died in Paulding in the 1920's. Mary Jane married Benjamin Vial and died before 1900, last seen in Spencerville, Allen Co., OH. Louisa married a Phillips, I believe, and was last seen in Defiance, OH.

Only Hubert and Alvin lived in Ironton, along with their mother, on Garnet St, I believe. They moved there in/around 1890.

I'd be very interested in seeing a copy of your map of Ironton, whenever you can send it.

Happy hunting!

Ben

Sherry,

I just located James on the 1860 census. He is located in Washington Twp., Noble Co, IN. He says he is 40 (yet another birth year), Emaline(31), William H (9), Matilda C (5), and Mary P (2). They were listed under the last name McLion. No wonder he was so hard to locate!

Ben

The 1900 census lists his birth as Aug 1823, age given 76. In 1850, he said he was 24. In 1870, he said he was 46. In 1880, he said he was 55. When he married Catherine (Hess) Westbrook in FEB 1868, he said he was 45.

As for death, the last time that he shows up is on the 1900 census in Greenbush Twp., Clinton Co, MI. I would look there for either a death record or tombstone record for him. You may also find his first wife, Emaline, and his daughter Ida L. buried there as well as he remained in Greenbush Twp from at least 1868-1900.

Ben

Here we go...

In 1870 James Mcquiston(46)shows up in Greenbush Twp, Clinton County, MI with wife Catharine(49), William H.(19), Matilda C.(16) Mary A.(12), Flora E.(9), Ida L.(7) and Alma Westbrook(9). Not sure which (or any)of these children belong to Catharine. In 1870 in St. Johns Twp, Clinton Co, MI there is a John McQuiston(25), Emma(21) and Matilda(16). Matilda was listed as a domestic servant in this household and I believe her to be the daughter of James. There is also the family of Robert McQuiston(64), Nancy(62), James(35), Hugh(20), Julius(18, John Walton(11) and Flory Walton(8)[these may have been grandchildren?] These are the parents of the John in St. Johns Twp. This family moved to Gratiot and Saginaw Counties in 1880.

Marriages for James' children that I have found are such; William Henry McQuiston married Sarah J. Strausser 17 NOV 1872 in Clinton County, MI, Matilda McQuiston married Scott Nelson abt 1878, Mary A. McQuiston married Thompson J. Kirby 28 DEC 1885 in Clinton County, MI, Flora E. McQuiston married Douglas Mead 07 DEC 1886 in St. John's Twp, Clinton County, OH. James married Malinda Blank Britton 07 APR 1888 in Greenbush, Clinton County, MI.(This record may indicate that James was the son of Thomas!)

Other marriages in CLinton County, MI: John McQuiston/Emma Hutchings 07 MAR 1870

In 1920, Robert Wallace McQuiston, s/o Robert and Nancy mentioned above, returns to Clinton County, MI with his daughter Minnie (Gust) Olson, aged 87. I believe he may have died in Clinton County.

James McQuiston is listed as living in Elsie, Clinton County, MI in 1890. He was listed as a veteran of Co. F, 134th Pennsylvania Infantry. I believe this is James, s/o Robert and Nancy. Wallace (mentioned above) was a veteran of Co D, 180th Pennsylvania Infantry living in Chapin Twp, Saginaw County, MI. This James McQuiston is found in Chapin, Saginaw in 1900.

In 1880, James(55) and Catharine(58) are still in Greenbush Twp, Clinton County, MI, living by themselves. Their son Henry W.(29) is living with his wife, Sarah(34), and their son James O.(6) and sister-in-law Elizabeth Strauser(23). Matilda(26) and her husband Nelson Scott(28) are in Greenbush as well. Flora McQuiston(20) is listed as a servant in the house of H.D. McCabe while her sister Mary(23) was a servant in the household of O.G. Wicks, both in St. Johns Twp. I could not find Ida on this census.

1900 finds William(49) and his wife Sarah(54) in Lansing, Ingham Co, MI living alone. James(76) is living with his daughter, Matilda(46) Scott and her husband Nelson(48), son Henry(19) and nephew Clifford Kirby(9). [Mary must have passed away] Flora E. Mead(41) is living with her husband Douglas(47) and son Jesse D.(10) in Bingham Twp, CLinton County, MI.

By 1910 James is not found, Nelson Scott has remarried a Sarah (m. abt 1908). Flora(49)Mead is living with her husband Douglas(55) and son Jesse G.(20) in St John's Twp. while William H.(59) and Sarah(64) are still in Lansing, MI.

Finally, By 1920, Douglas Mead(65) is a widower living with son Jesse D.(30)in Greenbush Twp. Sarah(73) is listed as a widowed sister-in-law in Lansing, MI in the home of Peter and Elizabeth Griswold. There is another Sarah(61) McQuiston listed as a widow in the William(44) and Mabel A.(35) Sandford residence in St Johns Twp, Clinton Co, MI.[I'm not sure where she fits in though]

This is all that I have on the James McQuiston family. Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Ben
As far as I can tell, she is no close relation. In 1910 she is listed with her mother, Sarah Brown, and two of her sons from a first marriage to someone with the last name Trovinger.

Not sure as to what Doyle she married, but there was a daughter Leona Doyle born about 1895.

Ben

Some new information regarding Clinton Co, MI McQuistons...

The Sarah listed as a widow in 1920 in the William and Mabel Sandford home is Sarah Emeline (aka Emma)Burch. She was married 16 APR 1876 in Fairfield, Shiawassee Co, MI to Hugh McQuiston, s/o Robert and Nancy(McVicker) McQuiston. An interesting note here: four of the Hiram and Sarah Burch daughters; Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Emeline, Ellen (aka Ella), and Alice married four of Robert and Nancy's boys, (in order with wives above)John(m. 25 MAR 1872 in Saginaw Co, MI), Hugh, Julius (m. 15 JUN 1880 in Genessee Co, MI) and James B. (m. 17 DEC 1883 in Fairfield, Shiawassee Co, MI.

It also looks as though all of James (Ezra) McQuiston's children belonged to his first wife, Emaline. He married 2nd, Mrs. Catherine (Hess) Westbrook on 04 MAR 1868 in Greenbush, Clinton Co, MI before marrying 3rd Malinda Blank Britton, 07 APR 1888 in Greenbush, Clinton Co, MI. There is an alternate wedding date for James and Catherine out there dated 21 MAR 1868. Not sure if one of them is a marriage application, though.

Ben

Have you checked the Probate records in Holmes County, OH? Either that or maybe orphans records would indicate who became guardians of Thomas's children after he passed away. If he did die before 1833, several of his children would have young under 15 years of age.

Good Luck!

Ben

I'm looking for records for John and (Betsy McQuiston) Ann Kerr. In particular I am looking for the below info of a Sheriff's sale of land in Sugar Creek Twp. (now Washington Twp.) in 1809 and the Administration papers for her fathers (James McQuiston) Estate in Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co. as I believe the land mentioned below belonged to them.

I would be interested in ANY info on this family and if anyone knows where they went, children, etc...

Thanks,

Ray
Michigan

Adjoining the northern part of that Denniston-McClatchey tract on the east is a partially bounded one, a rectangular parallelogram, if completely bounded, lengthwise, east and west, with the name of "Arch'd Denniston." John Kerr was its original settler, to whom it was surveyed by Ross, deputy surveyor, May 4, 1805, as containing 403 acres and 123 perches, with 350 acres of which, and 1 cow, he was assessed in 1805, at $93.50, and the next year with the same and 2 additional cattle, at 108.50. James Fulton obtained a judgment against Kerr, for $109.32 of debt, on which the latter's interest in this tract was sold by Jonathan King, sheriff, who conveyed it to Robert Orr, December 19, 1809, for $46, who conveyed it to Paul Morrow, December 21, 1810, for $50, which Morrow conveyed to Nathaniel Steward, April 9, 1813, for $200, who conveyed it to Joseph Taylor, August 12, 1816, for $1,000, the last-mentioned names being on it on the other map. The records do not show what became of Taylor's interest in it.
http://www.pa-roots.com/~armstrong/smithproject/history/chap...
Ben,
We can assume that Julia Ann and Matilda were sisters.
1) They were both from Holmes co.
2) They were both connected to Ironville Toledo Oh.
3) Matilda's son Cameron came to Ironville shotly after he married. By 1880
4) John Lint was in Ironville after Matildas death in 1869. He may have come with Cameron. John died in Toledo in 1889.
5) Julia Ann came in 1890 to Ironville.

Was Julia buried elsewhere, and what happened to her sons.
I have one uncle that is 86 with a fair memory. I may be able to get some info on them if they stuck around. The family all lived in close proxsimity of each other. There was about a two block area where they either lived across the street or behind some other family member. Sometimes when one family home came open another family member would move in. When I get my records on cd I will send a map of Ironville.

Sherry

Ben,
Sorry I haven't gotten back with you in awhile. After my trip to Holmes county, Oh in the fall my computer took a dump. My son said it wasn't worth fixing, so I now have a new one along with a new e-mail address ( sherrell@tc3net.com). Anyway I found Matilda and John lint in a cematery in the northwest corner of Holmes co, but unfortunatly it is on private property. I am trying to find out who owns it. It is an Amish cematery. So I do believe John is from an Amish family there.

While checking all the records there I could not find one McQuiston other then Matilda buried in the county. None in
Coshocton, Tuskawaras, or Wayne. By the way John and Matilda did live in Saltcreek, Wayne co in 1860 also.
I was wondering if there was a family cematery somewhere either in ohio or Pa. that they might go back to for buriel.
There is a McQuiston family cematery in Pa but I don't know yet if any of the Ohio McQuistons went back there for buriel. I tried to find James Ezra up here but I am not finding alot of success there. I believe that the record of Matildas marriage was listed in the State book here because James lived here. It actually recorded it because of his name not hers.
I will be going to Lansing this spring. Hopefully I will be able to get alot of info there.

Sherry.

Ben, Went to Holmes county last week,on vacation. I can see why our ancesters went there. It is beautiful. Anyway there is no graves listed in Holmes, Wayne, Coshocton or Tuskarawus Counties. I did find that Matilda McQuiston Lint is buried in Berlin Twp in the Abraham Mast cematery with her husband John. This is an
Amish cematery. She died April 15 1869. That puts her birth at Aug 31, 1810. Many McQuistons lived in all of these counties. I don't know why there is no graves listed. I am going to search the other surrounding counties, maybe they were buried in family cemateries, or went back to PA to be buried.
Haven't beeen able to search yet in Clinton twp, Mi for James. Will work on that soon.

Ben,
I remember my Uncle, Lawrance Smith and my dad, Kenneth Smith talking about the Doyle boys. They would have been third cousins to my grandfather Claude Smith. I will get the scoop when I visit Him in the spring.
Also I have a timeline map of the family in Ironville. Only thing is I have so much research I can't find it.
As for the North Oregon cematery, there is a grave marked Julia Doyle, this is either a wife or daughter as the dates are later then Julia Ann. There is a headstone in with Cameron and Mary Lint that simply says Mother. I can't remember if there was a date. I have a picture of it, but this to I need to find. All the family headstones are the same. Do you have a grave number for her?
As for the McQuistons buried in Paulding co. Do you have a list of them?
Sherry

Well, called my mother in law and this is the Mike in my Hofbauer tree. Mike is Dan's Uncle Mike and Aunt Bee. There is a twist to the story. Roberts sisters nay (AUNTS) they have all passed now, had a well kept secret. Robert was acctually the child of Agnes Hofbauer, Mikes sister. Her parents Michael and Delia Hofbauer raised him as there own, telling everyone he was theres. As years passed and some of the sisters passed Robert picked up little hints and suspected she was his mother. Of course she denied it. When she passed others told him the truth. He even got tid bits of who his father was. Now even though he knew the truth his bio siblings never would acknowledge him. Up until his death he said his parents were for all purposes Michael and Delia. That is how it reads in his Obit.
Great closet story. Huh. He told me everything because he wanted it known how he was denied by his real mother and his real brothers and sisters. Now, it is in his tree. He has had his say.

Sherry.

Oh my GOD!!! What a coincidence. Michael Hofbauer is related to my Ex husband Dan. Do you have any other info on him. I will search the records but I will give my Mother in law a call, I think I know witch Michael he is. Was he from the Toledo area. Specifically Oregon, Ohio. The Hofbauers go back to the very early years of the settlement. Will get to you soon.
Sherry

What county was that in?
I am also searching here in Clinton twp, Mi for him in the later half of the 1800's.
Hope tp here from you.
I have done some research into the McQuiston Family Tree and I have the same connections.

My Grandfather was James Mitchell McQuiston born 03Aug1903 and married Jessie McKay Doak. His father is Thomas born 04Jun1869

My Father is Thomas McQuiston born 05Mar1930 and would be a cousin of Annie McQuiston.

I would be happy to exchange any information.
