Hi John,

How nice to hear from you. Yes you definitely stayed with my grandparents. They had six children, Hugh, John, Joan, Bert, Maxie and Andrea. Nat was granddads brother, I remember his name being mentioned often. I think they did a lot of work together in Larne. My Dad John McRandal would be 83, if he was still alive, so he is quite a bit older than you, but you probably did meet him when you stayed with Gran & Grandad, we lived fairly close to them while we were in London. Your age is closer to my Dad's children's age's than his. The only Joe that I can think of is Andrea's husband, he is Joe Bailey at the time you were staying with Gran & Grandad he would have been Andrea's boyfriend. My dad did amature boxing as a youngster and won quite a few matches, I think at one time he was the Ulster champion in his weight category, maybe this will trigger some other memories of stories told. It is really nice to meet family members that until now I did not know existed.

Regards
Jackie

Hi Jackie, I have just found your post on here. My mother was Sarah McRandal from Larne and I was born in Larne in 1949 but moved to NW England with my parents in about 1950.Dad died in 1987 and Mum died in 2006.
When I was about 16, I had applied to join the RAF and was sent to Biggin Hill for interview (I failed the eyesight test!)and while I was down there I stayed with your grandparents, Bert and Rita at their house in Norwood (I think it was). Following that visit I must have stayed with them another few times. It was always a great adventure going to London as a teenager in the Swinging Sixties!
"Aunty" Rita and "Uncle" Bert were always very good to me and I remember them with fondness. I think my Mum visited them a couple of times too.
If I've got the relationship connections right, Bert was brother to Nat McRandal in Larne. My Mum was actually Nat's daughter but grew up believing he was her brother. She was born out of wedlock and her natural mother abandoned her to be brought up by Nat and his folks. I knew my "Uncle" Nat very well and used to visit him and his wife Winnie in Larne every couple years when I was growing up and it was only a few years before he died that I found out he was actually my grandfather.
I have a feeling that I would have met your dad, he's a bit older than me I think (I'm 60 this year)and I seem to remember meeting other sisters and brothers too but can't remember the details. Did he have a brother Joe?

I'm now living in Aberdeen (due to work etc) but keep in touch with many McRandal relatives in N. Ireland (my wife and I visited Larne and Ballymena in 2007) as well as a whole gang of McRandals in Harlow, Luton, Bedford and south London.
I have done a bit of research into the family tree but Lisa Painter is well ahead of me so I'm happy just to feed information to her as we go along.
Let me know if there is anything you want to find out.
Kind Regards
John

Hi Jackie,
Glad to hear from your branch of the McRandal tree! Looking at the McRandal info I have, I don't have anything newer than Bert and Rita (ie their children, grandchildren and so on). If you're willing to share that information, I'd be very glad of it. Feel free to use my email.
In return, is there any information I can share with you? I am the great-granddaughter of Jennie/Jeannie (born McRandal), daughter of Sarah and Hugh McRandal (parents of your Bert). I grew up hearing stories from nana of the "old country" (she moved to Canada with her husband in the 1920s) and so have always felt like I knew all the whole family. Between these message boards, the website and a trip back to Larne I've met many McRandal cousins and have collected a fair bit of history.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Liza Painter
BC, Canada

Hello, I have just discovered this site, and was amazed at how much family history is here. I was born a McRandal, my parents were John and Mary McRandal, both have passed away. My fathers parents were Bert and Rita McRandal. Let me know if you need any info to continue with the family tree. I am willing to fill in any gaps you may have if I can.

Jackie

I am haplogroup N, subgroup N1a. As this is passed on down from the female line, then my mom (Maureen), grandmother (Eileen), great-grandmother (Jennie), and great-great grandmother (Sarah McRandal, nee McKinstry) would all share this group. At least I think that's how it works ;-) In any case, N1a is currently a rare group seen in less than 1% of the population and traced back some 63000 years to the Near East, Scandanavia and Central Asia.
Just something a little interesting I though...I do wonder if it ties in, also, to being RH negative.

Sad to say, my first cousin Damian MacRandal died last week after a short illness at the age of 55. He was the son of Daniel (the well-known Belfast architect) and Una, and lived near Oxford in England. He was well known in the scientific community and published many scientific papers and reports. He will be buried tomorrow in England, and a memorial mass is being held at St Brigids church in Belfast at 3 p.m. on Saturday 11 December. I look froward to seeing many family members there.

I am a descendant of the Hugh McRandal Mentioned in your outline.

The earliest record known to me is the tombstone of Hugh McRandle (note spelling) in Glenarm, County Antrim. He died in 1805 at the age of 90 years. I visited the grave last week & can send you a photo if you wish - though the wordig will be too faint to read. He is my five time great grandfather.

HI Liza - It's good to hear you had a successful trip. I hope to hear more about your findings and experiences.

Regarding the different spellings, I'm still trying to find some connection between my family and the McRandles still living in the Larne area. They seem to derive from a Bernard and Hugh who lived in the Cairncastle area in Antrim - but I can't find a anything to link them to the Feystown folk.

All the best

Donal

I have very clear memories of Uncle Alec and his big cars!
About 40 years ago I stayed with Uncle bertyie and Aunt Rita at their hous in South London and I visited them a few times again after that, a lovely, very warm and welcoming couple.
Hope you are well.
John

Hi Shelly...and no worries about the questions. I myself get all excited about this stuff...only fellow family historians understand...lol.
Okay, I had to check this with Alastair. Bert and Rachel -- I know them as Bertie and Rita (which she apparently went by) are your great grandparents, so yes, Sarah and Hugh would be your great great grandparents.
So then, Sarah and Hugh had the following children:
Hugh (the elderest, died young)
Harry m. Margaret McAnally
John m. Sunda (settle in Pittsbugh, PA, USA)
Jane (my nana) m. Bill Hansom, m. John Baron
Bernard (Bertie) m. Rita (Rachael)
Joe m. Ella Carmichael
Nathaniel (Nat) m. Margaret Maxan
Eileen m. Alastair McQuillan
Margaret (Greta) m. Sam Powell
Hugh (the younger) m. Winnie
If I've got them all right, there should be 10 children, 9 of whom survived.
As for the coat of arms, we have a copy of it over here as well, but I"m not sure how "official" it is. I heard a story from my nana that it was found under 51 Main St. (Larne) when the house was demolished, but I don't know really. Think I've got a photo of it I can email to you.
I've got tons, well, a fair bit more info on the McRandles if you're interested....Hugh's family back a couple more generations, and Sarah's back to her parents (and some grandparents). Do you have a family tree computer program? If so, I could send you a GEDCOM.
Meanwhile, I'd love to get all the info you have on your family if you're willing to share. Currently I have no further info on Bertie and Rita other than they were married..so if you have their children, names, dates, marriages, children,etc...I'd love it all! Feel free to send it to my email, either shylalp@yahoo.com or lizap@3web.net.
Right-o.
I'm sorry to hear about your uncle Maxi -- I'd heard he was unwell when I was over visiting this past May. I am glad to hear you heard of our little site here though...and welcome to our ever-growing online McRandal clan! I'm Liza Painter, 37, living near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. My nana (great-grandmother) was Jennie/Jane (born McRandal), daughter of Hugh and Sarah. I grew up hearing stories of the McRandals but of course there were none around here so have been very excited to see all the clan online.
Liza**

McRandal website for all

John Price made an excellent suggestion so I've just set us up a McRandal site at msn groups. The address is:
http://groups.msn.com/McRandalfamily
Here anyone can post photos, audio, documents, discussions, announcments and whatever else you can think of that you'd like to share with other McRandal cousins. Currently it's an "open" site, so there's no need to "join" or be "approved". Just head on over to the page and let us all know what's going on in your lives.
I look forward to seeing lots of interesting stuff!
Liza Painter**
(great-granddaughter of Jennie McRandal, born Larne, 1901)

continuing back...Bernard to Hugh

Okay, so according to parish records, Bernard was born to Hugh and Anne/Ann , 28 Jul 1844.
Hugh and Anne/Ann (nee Galbraith/Gilbraith) were married in the Glenarm Roman Catholic chapel in April 1828.
From Hugh's death registration (d. 22 March 1866 aged 61) we can derive a birthdate for Hugh of about 1805. Unfortunately I did not come across any parish records to confirm this birth date. As we go further back, fewer and fewer records survive.

Hugh to Bernard (m. Margaret McKinty) 1870

Okay, so here's a summary of some of my findings (note that the name spellings I use are those found on the registrations):
Hugh was born to Bernard McRandle and Margaret McKenty on 27 March 1873 at Dunteige. [Dunteige is an area very near Feystown, and both are about 10 minutes out of Glenarm. Craigy Hill farm, the abode of the McRandal family for some generations, is in Dunteige.] Bernard is listed as a Farmer and was the informant for the birth registration. The birth was registed in June 1873.
Continuing back ...
Bernard McRandal married Margaret McKinty 17 Feb 1870 at Feystown. Bernard is a farmer at Duntegue and Margaret is from Mullough Connolly...a farm between Glenarm and Feystown. He is 25 and she is 20 at the time and both of their fathers are listed as farmers.

some findings...spelling of McRandal

Hello all...I just got back from a great trip and am very pleased with what I found. I will post it over several messages (as it comes to mind...lol).
One of the first things is the spelling of McRandal. I have come across it spelled various ways by the clergymen of the 19th century -- McRandal, McRandle, McRandall, McRandell -- all referring to the same people.
Hugh McRandal (m. Sarah McKinstry) was born 1873 to "Bernard McRandle". However, in other instances I have Bernard's surname spelled differently. It would seem, however, that around the the turn of the century the spellings settled down into the pattern that we now have them. Hugh and Sarah were McRandal. Many of the Belfast family, who would be Hugh's siblings, uncles and aunts, seem to have gone with McRandle. Some of the family that came to canada kept with MacRandall. Basically, we all tie in together in the mid 1800s, no matter how we spell the name today.
more to follow...

Hello all!
I'm very pleased to say that I am finally going to get to the "old country" next month. I plan to virtually live in the PRONI and other such houses of history, digging up all the paperwork I can find on the McRandals in the 19th century (and, dare I hope, earlier?). I hope to see Glenarm, the Feystown cemetery and of course Larne. I promise to share all I learn.
Hope this finds you all well.
Liza**

Hello and welcome to the McRandal clan.
I did a quick search through the branches of McRandals I have on record and I see I have an Alistair, son of Alex and Margaret. The little info I have on them shows that Alistair married Renee and died in 1946. Might this be your family? It is quite possible they were in Belfast as a number of the McRandals did end up there.
I'd be happy to share what I have if you like, and would love to hear what you have of course. Whereabouts are you? Feel free to email me.
Liza Painter**
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Hi Liza, I'm Sylvie's grandaughter, (daughter of Liz and niece to Edna and John),can't help much on the family history, just a quick line to say how fascinating it is to read the excerpt of information on this forum. Have grown up with gran telling me tales of Ireland and I must admit the family members all got a little confusing at times! Seeing it here on this site provides much clarification. I now have a 5 year old daughter which adds another generation to this particular branch of the family tree.
I wish you all the best with your search for further information, you can get my email address from Edna should you ever want to get in touch.
Good Luck!

Corinna

HI Liza, How wonderful to hear from you. Yes we are from the same generation i am 26 years old. I have recently started looking into the "McRandal" history, well the last 6 months or so and posted my message seeking help. I have researched as much as possible but now cannot go any further. I would love to share information that you have about the McRandal history. You are correct in the information about where i decend from. My home email is sieromc@iprimus.com.au I live in Western Australia and so does my Great Uncle Bernard with my Great Aunt Sheila. Bernard is my dad's uncle, children of Bernard and Rachel. I have recently been talking with Donal McRandal who has seen my notices on the internet and he is in Southern Ireland and was born in 1946. He is going to help me with some information too. He thinks that we are forth cousins twice removed or something. I would be so grateful to hear from you. Please take care.
Talk soon .. Kind Regards, Kellyx

Hi Kelly and Ed. I don't know how I missed your messages all this time but a belated welcome to the online McRandal family!
If I have followed correctly, you are descended from Bernard McRandal and Rachel (whom I currently have as "Rita" for some reason) Armstrong, and Bernard was the son of Hugh and Sarah (my great-great grandparents). I currently have Bernard and "Rita"/Rachel having only two children, an Andrea and a Gerard....must be transcription errors on my part! ;-). And it sounds like we're the same generation...I'm 35.
If you like I can send you what I have collected on the McRandals. Most of it has been contributed by people like yourselves so isn't an "official" genealogy per se, yet (I'm planning a trip back to "the old country" to hopefully prove what I have with a paper trail). I'd love to have your family full details as well if you're willing to share.
The McRandals are a globe-trotting bunch -- I'm in Canada, and I know of a couple of branches in the US as well. There is, or should be, another McRandal bunch in Australia as well -- Harry McRandal and his children (Lavena is the only name I have). Harry is the son of Joseph/Joe and Ella McRandal. Joe is the son of Hugh and Sarah. This information I got from Elain McRandal. I don't know which part of Australia they might be in though. It would be interesting to see if they could be found.
In any case, please feel to email me or post further queries here...I promise to pay better attention!
Liza**
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

HI Ed,
Wonderful to hear from you ... i have started working on a family tree and could not belive how many people knew about the Randal McDonald story. I used to think that my dad was telling me stories. Please let me know your family relations where you are and i should be able to track down how we are related. My Grandad is John McRandal and his brothers & sisters are Bernard, Maxie, Joan, Andrea etc. My Grandad was born in Larne, Ireland and moved to the UK. See if these names ring any bells with your relatives. I would love to hear from you again. I am only 25 and i can remember how boring School was.... enjoy it while you can.. the only good thing about work is that they pay you.. but i never realized how easy it was at school.Take care, talk soon, Kelly
